inacabables de los resorts turísticos de Saidia o Essauria;
o en los campos de golf como el de Mogador o Tánger
se corrigen errores en los que incurrieron desarrollos
similares en otras partes del mundo, se gestionan con
inteligencia los recursos –uso de energía solar y eólica y
de agua reciclada, por ejemplo–, y se incentiva la integración de las comunidades locales.

“Sustainable tourism in Morocco is a long-term
project, a clear wager for the future”, states Essaid Kasmi, the Director of the Moroccan National Tourism Office in Spain. He says so with
satisfaction and conviction, with figures to
back up his words. Since 2006, one of the drivers behind the development of our neighbour
on the other side of the Straits – that neighbour so close, seductive and attractive – has
been this new vision of the travel industry, an
intelligent option tinged with pragmatism and
with a gaze focused on the years to come.
A forward-looking gaze supported, what is
more, by the development of top-level infrastructures such as the new cargo and passenger port terminal at Tangiers Med, a strategic
location on the Strait, and the extensive network of motorways linking this hub and that
of Nador with the country’s main cities. Or the
high-speed railway line that will connect Tangiers to Casablanca, for which His Majesty King Mohammed VI laid the
“first stone” in September, 2011.
The results of this combination of modernity and sustainability are already visible. In the string of never-ending
beaches at the tourist resorts of Saidia or Essauria, or in the
golf courses in such places as Mogador or Tangiers, which
have corrected the errors made in similar developments
elsewhere in the world: natural resources are managed intelligently through the use of solar energy and wind power
or the recycling of water, for example, and the local communities are integrated into the projects.

These new ways to help the tourism industry
develop and operate achieve their maximum
expression in the complexes set up in the
country’s natural parks, as at Terres D’Amanar,
close to the Toubkal Natural Park, nestling in
the first foothills of the Upper Atlas. The venture has come good on all the features that
can be demanded of a sustainable location:
respect for natural resources, abatement of
greenhouse gas emissions, savings in water
and electricity, the use of solar panels to generate power and, above all, the conservation of
the Berber lifestyle, which visitors are invited
to share.

Advised by both local and foreign professionals, the Moroccan authorities have incorporated the concept that the most conventional
ways of enjoying a country, namely sun and
beach tourism, active tourism, urban tourism,
and particularly nature tourism, can and must
be sustainable. And the idea extends through
the 3,500 kilometres of coastline hiding some
of the true secrets of the Mediterranean and
the Atlantic; in the Rif and the Atlas mountains;
and the unending sweep of the desert.
Figures from recent years support these actions. Tourism currently represents 8% of

Las cifras de los últimos años avalan estas actuaciones.
El turismo representa en la actualidad el 8% del PIB del
país, en comparación con el 6% a principios de la década. Y el número de visitantes pasó de los 4,4 millones en
2001 a casi 9,3 millones en 2010, lo que representa un
crecimiento anual medio del 8,7%, muy por encima de la
media mundial.
Otro de los grandes polos del turismo sostenible aguarda al
norte, a las puertas de Chefchauén: es el Parque Nacional de
Talassemtane, último refugio marroquí de los pinsapares, los
macacos o el águila real. Donde además es posible vivir de
cerca la realidad de los jbalas, “la gente de la montaña”, unas
25.000 personas que se distinguen por su forma de vestir,
sus peculiaridades lingüísticas, sus técnicas constructivas o
sus prácticas agrarias, y que habitan un parque que atesora
un importante patrimonio histórico y religioso.

Pero la sostenibilidad es sinónimo también de uso de los
recursos naturales, conservación de la energía y recuperación de entornos. Como el del lago de Merchica, en Nador, con hoteles y servicios construidos bajo estándares
ecológicos. Y sobre todo, como el de la rehabilitación y
desarrollo del valle del río Bou Regreg, que atraviesa las
ciudades de Rabat y Salé, un área de casi 6.000 hectáreas
que albergará tanto infraestructuras de servicios –transporte público de tren por superficie, sistemas hidráulicos
y zonas portuarias como el puente Moulay Hassan o el
túnel Oudayas– como espacios verdes y de paseo. Y por
supuesto, la nueva joya de la capital: el Gran Teatro de
Rabat, obra de la arquitecta iraní Zaha Hadid, cuya inauguración está prevista para finales de 2014.
Emprendimientos, proyectos y desarrollos que impulsan
un Marruecos diferente, firme en sus raíces pero integrado al siglo XXI y, sobre todo, cuidadoso con el entorno y
los recursos que garantizan el futuro.
