STRAIGHT LINES
“God writes straight with crooked lines,” the saying goes. The
power of Paul’s testimony that everything is junk but knowledge of
Jesus and the power of his resurrection is a straight enough message.
And, God knows, Paul had a crooked journey before his blinding insight straight from God.
Through Isaiah, God reminds us all that the past great works were
as nothing compared to the new creation. “Can’t you see it?” we are
asked, as if we are still wandering along our crooked lines.
And there is no straighter line than that between the woman
whose misery is intense and the God whose mercy in Jesus is deeper
and more acute. You just can’t beat this kind of good news. Copyright

testimonio contundente de san Pablo, cuando nos dice que todo es
basura fuera del conocer a Cristo y experimentar la fuerza de su Resurrección, es un mensaje bien directo y claro –aunque Dios sabe que
Pablo anduvo por una senda bien torcida antes de recibir la luz cegadora del Señor.
Isaías nos recuerda que los grandes milagros del pasado no son
nada en comparación con la nueva creación que Dios va a realizar.
“¿No lo notan?” nos pregunta el profeta, como si todavía anduviéramos perdidos por nuestras sendas torcidas.
Y no hay renglón más derecho que la línea que conecta la intensa
miseria de una mujer pecadora con la misericordia de Dios que se
muestra en la persona de Jesús. ¡Eso sí que son Buenas Nuevas!”

ONE OF THE
OLDEST MYSTERIES OF ALL TIME

¿Quién no disfruta de una gran historia de misterio? Por
alguna razón, los misterios siempre nos han fascinado. Cuanto más difícil es de resolver, más interesante se convierten.
Leemos novelas de misterio, vemos programas de televisión y películas que contienen elementos de misterio, incluso
participamos en conversaciones que involucran misterios
históricos y de la vida real. Después de tantos años, todavía
hablamos sobre quién fue realmente responsable del asesinato del presidente John F. Kennedy, o del llamado Triángulo
de las Bermudas, también conocido como el "Triángulo del
Diablo", una región definida vagamente en la parte occidental del Océano Atlántico Norte, donde se dice que un número de aeronaves y buques han desaparecido en extrañas circunstancias, realmente existe (a pesar de las persistentes negativas de la Marina de los Estados Unidos).
El Evangelio de hoy, en el octavo capítulo de San Juan,
contiene uno de los más antiguos misterios de todos los
tiempos: ¿Cuál fue la Escritura de Jesús en la tierra con el
dedo-una acción que causó que todos los acusadores de la
mujer adúltera se mantuvieran alejados de sus graves acusaciones?
En un intento por resolver este antiguo misterio, los estudiosos de las Escrituras han planteado muchas teorías acerca
de lo que Jesús realmente escribió. Tal vez nunca sabremos
cual teoría-si hay, es la correcta.
Pero lo que sí sabemos es que Jesús perdonó-y-no condenó a la mujer. Y ese es el punto del Evangelio de hoy:
Jesús perdona siempre, y nunca condena. Como el Papa
Francisco ha dicho una y otra vez, "Jesús es el rostro mismo
de la misericordia de Dios."
Al celebrar este año jubilar extraordinario de la Misericordia, recordemos, mientras la Cuaresma 2016 está a punto de
llegar a su fin, las palabras exactas del Santo Padre:
Jesucristo es el rostro de la misericordia del Padre. El misterio de la
fe cristiana parece encontrar su síntesis en esta palabra. Ella se ha
vuelto viva, visible y ha alcanzado su culmen en Jesús de Nazaret. El
Padre, “rico de misericordia” (Ef 2,4), después de haber revelado su
nombre a Moisés como “Dios compasivo y misericordioso, lento a la
ira, y pródigo en amor y fidelidad” (Ex 34,6) no ha cesado de dar a
conocer en varios modos y en tantos momentos de la historia su naturaleza divina. En la “plenitud del tiempo” (Gal 4,4), cuando todo estaba dispuesto según su plan de salvación, Él envió a su Hijo nacido de
la Virgen María para revelarnos de manera definitiva su amor.
Quien lo ve a Él ve al Padre (cfr. Jn 14,9). Jesús de Nazaret con su
palabra, con sus gestos y con toda su persona1 revela la misericordia
de Dios
Who doesn’t enjoy a great mystery story? For some reason,
mysteries have always fascinated us. The more difficult they
are to solve, the more interesting they become.
We read mystery novels, we watch television shows and
movies that contain elements of mystery, we even engage in
conversations involving historical, real-life mysteries. After so
many years, we still talk about who was really responsible for
the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, or whether the
so-called Bermuda Triangle, also known as the “Devil’s Triangle,” a loosely-defined region in the western part of the North
Atlantic Ocean, where a number of aircraft and ships are said
to have disappeared under mysterious circumstances, really
exists (in spite of the US Navy’s persistent denials).
Today’s Gospel, from the Eighth Chapter of Saint John,
contains one of the most ancient mysteries of all time: What
was Jesus writing on the ground with his finger—an action
that caused all of the adulterous woman’s accusers to back off
from their serious allegations?
In an attempt to solve this ancient mystery, scripture scholars have posed many theories about what Jesus was really writing. Perhaps we will never really know which theory—if any—
is the correct one.
But what we do know is that Jesus forgave—and did not
condemn—the woman. And that is the point of today’s Gospel: Jesus always forgives, and never condemns. As Pope
Francis has said time and time again, “Jesus is the very face of
God’s mercy.”
As we celebrate this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, let
us recall, as Lent 2016 is about to come to an end, the Holy
Father’s exact words:
Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy. These words might well
sum up the mystery of the Christian faith. Mercy has become living and
visible in Jesus of Nazareth, reaching its culmination in him. The Father,
“rich in mercy” (Eph 2:4), after having revealed his name to Moses as “a
God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love
and faithfulness” (Ex 34:6), has never ceased to show, in various ways
throughout history, his divine nature. In the “fullness of time” (Gal 4:4),
when everything had been arranged according to his plan of salvation, he
sent his only Son into the world, born of the Virgin Mary, to reveal his
love for us in a definitive way. Whoever sees Jesus sees the Father (cf. Jn
14:9). Jesus of Nazareth, by his words, his actions, and his entire person,
reveals the mercy of God.

When secrets become dangerous
There is no better time of year to review the important family rules that
help to keep all children safe. It takes just a few moments to review with
your children what to do in an emergency, who the special and safe
adults in their life are, and the importance of
not keeping secrets. Some secrets, like a gift for
a special occasion, can be fun and safe to keep.
Secrets that hurt others, involve any kind of
unsafe or inappropriate touching or anything
that bothers a child – are secrets that are NOT
safe to keep. Help your child understand the

Fifth Sunday of Lent
How fitting that the first Sunday Angelus of Pope Francis, who
has made mercy his papacy’s theme, took place the last time today’s
Gospel about Jesus’ encounter with the adulterous woman was proclaimed. “Jesus’ attitude is striking,” Francis declared. “We do not
hear words of scorn or condemnation, only words of love, of mercy,
an invitation to conversion: ‘Neither do I condemn you’ ” (John
8:11). Francis continued: “God’s face is the face of a merciful father
who is always patient. Have you thought about God’s patience, the
patience [God] has with each one of us? That is [God’s] mercy.
[God] always has patience, patience with us . . . understands us . . .
waits for us . . . does not tire of forgiving us” if we return ‘with a
contrite heart” (Pope Francis, Angelus address, March 17, 2013).
Parishes preparing catechumens may proclaim Jesus’ raising of Lazarus. Referring to Lazarus, and all those “raised” from the “death” of
sin, Jesus defines the community’s “mission of mercy”— “Untie him
and let him go” (John 11:44).

Otra de tantas coincidencias sucede otra vez, el primer Ángelus
que rezó el Papa Francisco fue en la fecha en la última vez que se
proclamó la historia del Evangelio de hoy, el encuentro de Jesús con la
mujer adultera . . . En ese entonces el Papa Francisco dijo que “la
actitud de Jesús es sorprendente”. “No escuchamos palabras de condenación o desprecio, solo palabras de amor, de misericordia, una invitación a la conversión: ‘Tampoco yo te condeno’ ” (Juan 8:11). El Papa
Francisco continua diciendo: “el rostro de Dios es el de un padre misericordioso, que siempre tiene paciencia. ¿Han pensado en la paciencia de Dios, la paciencia que tiene con cada uno de nosotros? Ésa es su
misericordia. Siempre tiene paciencia, paciencia con nosotros, nos
comprende, nos espera, no se cansa de perdonarnos si sabemos volver
a él con el corazón contrito” (Papa Francisco, Rezo del Ángelus del 17
de marzo de 2013). Las parroquias que están preparando a catecúmenos pueden proclamar la historia de Lázaro cuando vuelve a la vida.
Refiriéndose a Lázaro y a todos aquellos que “se despertaron” de la
“muerte” del pecado, Jesús define la “misión de misericordia” de la
comunidad: “Desátenlo y déjenlo ir” (Juan 11:44).
