To achieve such reconciliation,we must examine our lives
“We need a conversation which includes everyone since the environmental challenge
affects us all.” (Laudato Si 14)
“To achieve such reconciliation,we must examine our lives and acknowledge the way
in which we have harmed God’s creation through our actions and our failure to act.
We need to experience a conversation, or change of heart.” (Laudato Si 218)
Individual efforts alone are not sufficient; we need effective community networks!

Third Sunday of Lent
February 28, 2016
The Pastor’s Desk
Dear Friends,
May the Lord give you peace!
There is nothing like getting a second chance! I don’t mind telling
you that I have made more than my share of mistakes in my life and
have had to ask for plenty of second chances. I am very grateful for
second chances.
The gospel today is about a second chance. The Parable of the Fig
Tree is one with which Jesus’ listeners were quite familiar. It has
been around since before the 5th century BC. But in the parable they
were used to hearing the farmer cuts down the barren tree. In the
Jesus version, the barren tree is given a second chance. It doesn’t
take a genius to figure out what’s going on here. Jesus is telling us
that God constantly gives second chances. God constantly calls us
from our sinful ways to ways of repentance and life.
God is a very big and merciful God. God is beyond what we can
imagine. God exists before all time exists. God is without beginning
and without end. God is not male; God is not female. God goes
beyond sexual orientation; God goes beyond race, color, ethnicity
and wealth. God possesses all those traits, yet God belongs to none
of them. God does not stand still in any area of our making. God
is constantly moving toward us, toward life, love, forgiveness and
mercy.
The Parable of the Fig Tree is the story of a second chance. It
reminds us that we can always turn to God and that God will
always take us back. At the same time, sisters and brothers, the
Parable of the Fig Tree reminds us that we, too, must give second
chances. The fig tree reminds us that no one is dried up, that no one
must be cast off, and that everyone can bloom again, if only given
one more chance.

God goes beyond all our imaginings and at the same time loves each one
of us individually and intimately. The God who saves the fig tree also
saves us. The God who gives second chances calls us to give second
chances. God is the God of mercy, compassion and forgiveness.

12:00 Noon and 5:00 PM
Spanish Liturgy - 9:00 AM, Downey Hall
Family Liturgy - 10:30 AM Downey Hall
Lent is really the season of second chances. Like the fig tree,
we are given another opportunity to bloom. We are given the
opportunity to fix all that has gone awry in our lives. We have
another chance to love one another and forgive one another.
We have another chance to welcome all who come our way and
open up our doors to everyone who knocks no matter who they
are. Lent is the season of second chances because God is the first
person who realizes that we need second chances. Take this season
of repentance to give yourself all the second chances you need
because God is always willing to give them out!
EASTER FLOWER ENVELOPES and EASTER NOVENA CARDS are

THE FRANCISCAN CHALLENGE - Q & A’s
Why do the Franciscan Friars need money?
T
he Franciscan Friars ask not for themselves, but
for the sake of others, and often do so with some
embarrassment and hesitation. However, there are times
that need a stronger call and that is now. The Friars, in our
“tradition of begging,” are asking for money for three very
important causes:
1. For our young men who desire to become
Franciscan Friars – We need help for education
and all its costs, their room and board and their
intern expenses.
2. For our work with the poor and desperate – Saint
Francis traced the beginning of his conversion to
when God led him to live among lepers to serve
them. Ever since that time, direct service to the
materially poor and marginalized people of society
has been a hallmark of Franciscan ministry. We are
continuing that tradition over 800 years later.
3. For our sick and elderly Franciscan Friars –
These Friars have served so many for so long
– and are now in need of care themselves. The
cost of their care has risen drastically, while
the quality of their care depends on those of us
whom they have served so well.
All Are Welcome is the usual core
of Franciscan hospitality.
“Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam!” –Saint Ignatius Loyola
(All for the glory of God!)

Lenten Prayers for Hungry People
Readings, prayers and actions to help you and your family
observe Lent in 2016 - prepared by Bread for the World
So he said to the gardener, “...For three years I have come
looking for fruit on this fig tree and still I find none. Cut it
down! Why should it be wasting the soil?” [The gardener]
replied, “Sir, let it alone for one more year....If it bears fruit
next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.”
Prayer—O God, you call us to repentance and offer us mercy and forgiveness in Christ Jesus. May this gracious gift so fill us with joy that
we bear the fruit you desire, working to share the abundance of your
creation with all those in need. Amen
Action—Pope Francis has proclaimed 2016 as a Holy Year of
Mercy, “a year to be touched by the Lord Jesus and to be transformed
by his mercy, so that we may become witnesses to mercy.” For Pope
Francis, the joy of this gospel of mercy is the joy of the Gospel
that inspires and equips us to preserve and restore the dignity of all
human beings and to care for all of God’s creation.

Dijo
No
MENSAJE DEL PADRE FRANCISCO -Morelia Martes
