4 SESAC Latina affiliate songwriters topped the Billboard Decade-End charts in the Latin Pop and Regional Mexican categories, two key genres in Latin music. Each with 31 weeks at #1 on their respective charts, this extraordinary achievement corresponds to the period beginning in 2000 through 2009. The chart serves as a reflection of spins and radio audience in the United States and Puerto Rico. Alan Trigo The songs that ranked #1 this past decade were “No Me Doy Por Vencido” by Claudia Brant, on the Latin Pop chart, and “No Me Conoces Aun” by Alan Trigo, on the Regional Mexican chart. Both songs are considered classics due to the originality of their lyrics, the depth of their message, their complex melodic structures, and for their frequent radio airplay. “No Me Doy Por Vencido,” performed by Puerto Rican superstar Luis Fonsi, is also the song’s co-writer. The Mexican group Palomo gives voice to “No Me Conoces Aun.” Other compositions by SESAC Latina affiliates that formed part of the Decade-End charts include: “Cinco Minutos” (Erika Ender), “Dame Tu Amor” (Alacranes Musical), “Aqui Estoy Yo” (Claudia Brant), “Dime Quien Es” (Claudia Brant – also Billboard’s Regional Mexican Song of the Year in 2007), “Celos” (Alejandro Jaen), “Nuestro Amor Se Ha Vuelto Ayer” (Claudia Brant), and “Virtual Diva” (Diesel). Additionally, Duranguense group Alacranes Musical was named one of the Artists of the Decade and Alejandro Jaen was named one of the Producers of the Decade, according to the Billboard charts. “No Me Doy Por Vencido” Luis Fonsi “No Me Conoces Aún” Palomo Q1 -Dear Alex: I’m the lead singer/songwriter of my local duranguense band. We tour constantly! Our songs get performed at small bars, late night bailes, fairs, festivals and even at local concerts throughout the Midwest. I admit we will never sell out any of Chicago’s big venues. But, would SESAC still pay us for our small live performances around the region? Also, what’s your all time favorite SESAC Latina song? - Cubs Fan, Chicago, IL used as the theme song of a major upcoming film. Will SESAC pay me performance royalties for every time the song is performed at every single movie theater? Talking about movies, have you seen Q2 -Dear Alex: I’m a 61-year-old proud “Avatar” yet? - Popcorn Addict, Burbank, CA grandfather of three by day and a bachata composer by night. I’m thrilled to let you know that Querido Alex: He compuesto una balada que va a one of my newest songs is finally going to get ser usada como el tema central de una película recorded by a well-known bachata band. It’s never too late to write de SESAC favorita de todos los tiempos? - Fanático a hit and you are a prime example of that! According to current U.S. copyright laws, if you are de los Cubs, Chicago, IL the only author, then the song will be protected for Dear Fan: Absolutely! Unlike others, SESAC is the 70 years after your death. Now, if you co-wrote this only PRO in the USA that pays you for every live song with someone else (this is called a joint-work), performance: big or small! Not to mention, doing so will increase the etc.). That’s it! SESAC will then distribute the earned chances of your copyright to last for a very long royalties to you accordingly. To answer your other time. I’m just sayin’! question, Aleks Syntek’s “Duele El Amor” is by far one of my favorite songs of all time. Q3 -Dear Alex: I composed a ballad that will be tarde para escribir un gran éxito y tú eres el mejor ejemplo de ello. - Adicta al popcorn, Burbank , CA Dear Addict: Good question! The answer is probably not what most composers want to hear. Since the 1940’s, U.S. laws “grandfathered” movie theaters and exempted them from getting a music license from copyright owners. Therefore, movie theaters do not require a performance music license, even though music is such an important part of a film. Crazy, huh? You should also know that this rule only applies to the U.S. , since most foreign countries do pay performance royalties from movie theater performances. Now, SESAC does pay you when the film airs on TV and on digital media outlets. We will also forward to you any earned royalties from movie theaters in foreign territories (as collected and forwarded to SESAC by our sister foreign societies). To be honest, “Avatar” doesn’t really call my attention. Apparently, my heart sank down along with the “Titanic.” As a songwriter, he manages himself in two complementary spheres: on occasion he works by himself, “rooted” to his guitar, “recording a ton of ideas.” Sometimes, on the other hand, he works in the company of other songwriters, forming a creative team. More than a simple title,“Uno No Es Uno” (“One is Not Only One”), the name given to the album that has relaunched his career as a solo artist, is a concept that he embraces 100%. “I am not one,” states Noel Schajris (SACM/SESAC). “We are not simply one person, individuals separated from the rest of humanity, separated from creation, from the universe. We are a sum of personalities that inhabit a human body. Depending on external circumstances, those personalities rise up and present themselves. They reside in one.” As an artist, he defined an era in Latin music during his eight years in Sin Bandera. Although many people identify him as one of Camila’s vocalists, Samuel ‘Samo’ Parra also transcends as a songwriter and emphasizes that one of his greatest achievements is the song “De Que Me Sirve La Vida” (“What is Life Worth to Me?”) recorded by Camila and one of the eleven new tracks on the group’s latest CD. “Surrounded by Latin music by being born in Veracruz,” the songs that Samo enjoys the most can “come out of a tear” or speak about “sweet love,” because that contrast between weeping and laughter “is like life itself, an up-and-down roller coaster of lonely moments and joyous moments that are captured in songs.” After having performed in over 40 cities in Latin America, the Caribbean, the United States, and Europe, Fonseca (SAYCO/SESAC) made a momentous decision to sponsor the launch of the United Nations’ campaign “No More Violence Against Women,” “an international consensus to eliminate violence against women and children,” according to Fonseca’s press office. The campaign will run through 2015. As a leader among the new generation of Colombian artists, Fonseca, who also exhibits social consciousness, has garnered such international awards as the Latin Grammy, Billboard Award, and MTV Award, among others. Originally from Bogota, he has sold more than half a million copies of his latest CD, a clear reflection of his talent as an artist and songwriter. The pop group’s new album “Año Pefecto” was recorded in Spain and features such variety that even a traditional ‘bandoneon’ was used on one of the songs. Here they present a total of twelve new tracks, including a single (“Te Deje”) written by its four members along with the famous Claudia Brant, co-writer of an additional 2 songs on the album. The members of Playa Limbo’s disciplined team are: Jorge Corrales (keyboards and programming), Angel Baillo (bass), Maria Leon (vocals), and Servando Yañez (drums). 8 Convinced that success has to be sought out through hard work, perseverance, and oftentimes through sacrifice, Chris Syler has reaped “the first fruits of his labor” with a #1 hit on Billboard’s Latin Rhythm Airplay Chart for his song “El Doctorado,” performed by Tony Dize. Based in Miami, this achievement by Chris Syler coincides with the final preparations of his new album. In regards to his affiliation with SESAC Latina, Chris comments that it “was one of the fundamental decisions of my life because it has served as an important pillar in my career and has taken me to places I would never have been able to reach alone.” Claudia Brant possesses that certain “je ne sais quoi,” that charisma that guarantees a jump on the golden trampoline of success in more than one musical genre. A citizen of the world, she composes songs in Spanish, English, and Portuguese. Blessed with an inexhaustible creative wellspring, the winner of multiple SESAC Latina Songwriter of the Year awards was born and raised in the cosmopolitan city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Claudia Brant Aside from awards such as the Latin Grammy, the Mexican Recording Academy’s Oye!, and incredible hits like “No Me Doy Por Vencido” (Billboard’s Latin Pop Song of the Decade 20002009) and “Aqui Estoy Yo,” the history of Claudia Brant includes other episodes that interlace themselves in her story as an artist and songwriter, most notably the OTI (Festival of the Organization of Ibero-American Television), which she won in 1991, and Chile’s Viña del Mar Festival of Song, where she also took first place in 1995. Some of her most memorable hits include: “No Me Doy Por Vencido”and “Aquí Estoy Yo” (Luis Fonsi), “Caso Perdido” (Alicia Villarreal), “Dime Quién Es” (Los Rieleros del Norte), “Yo No Sé Perdonarte”, “No Soy Quién” and “Nuestro Amor Se Ha Vuelto Ayer” (Víctor Manuelle), “Ni Rosas Ni Juguetes” (Paulina Rubio), “No Te Mentía” and “Después de Ti” (Ednita Nazario), “Invierno” (Reik), and “Quédate” (Pee Wee). A: SESAC licenses a broad range of digital services including websites, streaming media services, mobile device carriers, satellite radio services, digital broadcasters, and more. Our New Media Licensing Department uses a variety of sources to seek out and license digital services that use SESAC music. As a result, our digital licensing efforts are securing new licenses every day thus ensuring SESAC affiliates receive the maximum coverage and compensation for their performances. Q: How does SESAC track digital performances to make its royalty payments? A: Tracking performances in the digital world can be challenging due to the fact that there are so many outlets with so many performances. Fortunately, advancements in technology are offering solutions to accurately and affordably track a broad range of digital outlets. Through Concentus Music Group’s Radiowave technology, we comprehensively monitor several hundred music channels on major streaming sites like Pandora, Rhapsody, Napster and Live365. In addition, Broadcast Data Systems (BDS) provides SESAC with detailed tracking reports for services like Yahoo and AOL, as well as airplay data on the numerous radio stations that stream their terrestrial broadcasts on their websites. Other services such as Sirius/XM Satellite Radio and TouchTunes provide SESAC with electronic program logs. Q: When does SESAC distribute digital media royalties to affiliates? A: Like royalties for all other performances, royalties for performances on digital media are distributed four times a year at the end of each calendar quarter. Each distribution reflects performance activity occurring during the immediately preceding calendar quarter. Royalties for performances tracked using the aforementioned methods are credited to each respective digital source and detailed on affiliate royalty statements. Q: What is the difference between digital interactive and non-interactive music streams? A: Digital music can be streamed interactively or noninteractively. Interactive streaming involves a certain level of decision-making by the user in order for the stream to be heard (e.g., song selection). With non-interactive streaming, the user passively listens to whatever music is being offered by the streaming service. You Tube is an example of an interactive streaming service, while Sirius Satellite Radio is an example of a non-interactive streaming service. Both types of streams constitute public performances and therefore require a performance license from SESAC. Q: Overall, what’s your take on the digital world? ¿Qué opina sobre el mundo digital? A: The digital domain indeed poses challenges to songwriters and artists, but it’s also an exciting world with almost limitless opportunities for music to be experienced and consumed. SESAC is resolved to protecting your copyrights and ensuring that digital services have the means to efficiently obtain proper authorization to use them. With a turnout that included affiliate songwriters, artists, musicians, publishers, press, and music industry executives, the SESAC Latina Awards and Showcase took place at LIV Nightclub at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida. 12 PERFORMANCE AWARDS SHOWCASE & Quality, joy, and “all the rest.” Those are three of the principal components of his artistic personality. Quality over quantity: fewer songs but excellent ones. A happy disposition and a dynamic transparency in his activities and projects. And a clear eagerness to share with people the fruits of his talent. As a songwriter and singer, Aleks Syntek compresses all this in a very explicit manner in his new album “Metodos de Placer Instantaneo,” the eighth album of his career and the first release off his own label, Mundo Lite Records – an adventure with an obvious forecast, since he possesses many of the secrets to reaching and maintaining success. But, why such a distinctive title? Aleks explains sincerely and spontaneously: “My album is called ‘Metodos de Placer Instantaneo’ (“Methods of Instant Gratification”) because I am promising ‘instant gratification’ every time someone listens to one of these songs. It is a much happier-sounding album than my last. It has fun and danceable songs, although it has a little bit of everything, with a very joyous spirit.” Convincing and convinced about how and who to direct his music towards, what Aleks looks for is that ‘all the rest’ enjoy his ingenuity and creative ability. He writes and sings for them. That is why, in his current stage, the artist affiliated with SESAC Latina allows space for collaborations, and in “Metodos de Placer Instantaneo,” he shares songwriting and performance credits with Ruben Blades on “Mujer Animal,” whose lyrics refer to a “dominating woman with a strong character, who has men eating out of the palm of her hand, in a satirical and joking spirit, combining salsa with country and disco music, something ‘retro’ that sounds like something from the ‘70s or ‘80s.” Exploring, in a sarcastic send-up tone, the relatively unknown personality angle of certain women, the first single off “Metodos de Placer Instantaneo” is the song “Loca,” the theme song to the soap opera “Los Exitosos Perez,” which has attained international popularity. Another track that has the smell of success is the romantic ballad “Mas de Mil Años,” which he wrote for his wife. “The song states that even if we would have existed in past lives, it’s very likely that we would have been in love then as well,” explains Aleks. “It’s a fantasy about love that can last more than a thousand years.” Dedicated to the cause of solidarity with Haiti, he has lent his name and organized a series of benefit concerts. Optimistic and sure of himself, by way of presenting music, initiatives, and truly original ideas, Aleks Syntek also enjoys what he considers to be the best part of his craft: “to surprise everyone with something different” and to transcend as a human being and as an artist. With frequent tours throughout the United States and Mexico, including dances, festivals, and concerts, the group has garnered some of the most important awards in the industry, including the Premio Lo Nuestro 2010. They also recently participated in the Spanish-language recording of the hit “We Are the World” for the benefit of earthquake victims in Haiti. The majority of Alacranes Musical’s songwriters are SESAC Latina affiliates. Trying to find balance and, moreover, facilitate the meeting of life experiences and “what can work,” Jeronimo Sada is a full-time songwriter. His normal rhythm of production results in 30 songs every 40 days. He has 5 “very clear” projects from now until the end of the year, including his own recording as a singer-songwriter. An attentive observer of people’s reactions during ‘bailes’ and inclined to romantic verses, ‘Jero’ (as he’s called by friends) has recently delved into the Regional Mexican genre with great success. His songs have been recorded by, among others: El Chapo, Autoridad de la Sierra, LMT, Palomo, and Palomo’s ex-vocalist Angel Fresnillo, who is embarking on a solo career. G ermán Montero Nueva etapa, nueva forma de componer A new phase, a new form of songwriting “This is what I chose and I have to enjoy it,” he states with a particular working man’s philosophy. The truth is that he is greatly enjoying his current situation, especially on the creative side, that side that has allowed him, in his own works, to “work alongside such important musical personalities as Claudia Brant, Erika Ender, Noel Schajris of Sin Bandera, Samo of Camila, and Jesus Navarro of Reik. These are people I owe a debt of gratitude to for having observed and appreciated my work.” Restless and intense, somewhat unrefined and inevitably charismatic, he is already a superstar in the Regional Mexican genre. German Montero subscribes to a certain dynamic, daily rhythm that includes events full of young ladies who kiss and dance with him, recording studios that echo his life experiences, frequent trips, hotels, meetings, interviews, and a very long ‘etcetera’ that includes a good amount of time dedicated to finding himself, writing, meditating, and giving thanks. He acknowledges this with a sincere energy: “I feel very committed to the people who have trusted in me. I thank SESAC because they believed in me and what I was doing since the very beginning. That is why I’m greatly enjoying this phase of my career, but with a lot of responsibility, because things have to be done well so that the public will like it.” 17 Talento multidotado y de una tremenda disciplina, Jazmín López, también conocida como ‘La Princesa del Pasito Duranguense’, canta y compone, conduce programas de televisión, hace entrevistas y las edita; y, además, desde que tenía cuatro años de edad se familiarizó con varios instrumentos musicales, entre ellos los teclados, la guitarra y el saxofón. A multi-faceted and disciplined talent, Jazmin Lopez, also known as the “Princess of Pasito Duranguense,” sings and writes, hosts television programs, conducts interviews and edits them. Also, at the age of four, she became familiar with various musical instruments including keyboards, guitar, and saxophone. Now living in Los Angeles, California, Jazmin (Patty) Lopez was born on May 7th in Del Rio, Texas, and she grew up in Brackettville, Texas. Her latest album titled “Jazmin” (released by Fonovisa/Universal), is her third record and the first that features solely ‘Duranguense’ music. jazmín lópez Miguel Angel Romero ‘El Tacuache’ finally decided to take up his career as a singer again by presenting his new album this year, in which 8 of the 14 tracks were written 100% by him. The first promotional single is “Te Necesito.” However, he has not neglected his facet as a restless composer whose works have been recorded by such important artists as German Montero, Los Rieleros del Norte, Los Cuates de Sinaloa, Sergio Vega, and German Lizarraga, among others. On a curious note, the SESAC Latina affiliate “hasn’t even paid attention to” the number of songs he’s written in his 10 year professional career: “Around three years ago, I began to take it more seriously. That’s why I really want people to consider me a great songwriter. Luckily, that’s the way it’s been and will continue to be.” miguel ángel romero Los padres de El Güero (Jorge Hernández) son de Jalisco, México. The parents of El Güero (Jorge Hernandez) are from Jalisco, Mexico. That is why, even though he was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he has always spoken Spanish (and English), focusing on his familial musical roots. He began with Grupero music and finally landed in the Duranguense genre, which allowed him to obtain a Grammy nomination in 2010. Musician, singer, songwriter, and sound engineer, the SESAC Latina affiliate has surprised many with his song “Muero De Amor,” which he cowrote. The track combines ‘Pasito Duranguense’ with ‘Reggaeton,’ youthful genres that seem diametrically opposed to one another. Ojeda now lives in Miami, where he is preparing to conquer the market by selling albums as a Revolver Records artist. He can be seen making personal appearances and putting into practice the dream that fed his life plan while he was “secluded” on “Viva el Sueño,” the Univision television program that launched him to international fame. His versatility allows him to sing ballads and pop. And, in Regional Mexican music – which is his favorite genre – ‘ranchero,’ ‘banda,’ and ‘duranguense.’ One of his most gratifying experiences was to have affiliated with SESAC Latina in order to accentuate his songwriting craft and to transform in a professional sense: “I am very happy due to the fact that SESAC liked my project and all that I’m preparing. They believed in me and that it why I signed with them. It’s one of the greatest gifts I’ve received in my career.” 19 PEDRO ÁVILA Presidente de Águila Raid Publishing PUBLISHER’S CORNER He simultaneously diversified his interests by forming musical groups such as Alacranes Musical and Mazizo Musical, a roster to which he later added Escandalo Musical, Agentes, Durango Express, Banda La Mentira, Banda Lamento Show, Banda Dorado Show, and Jazmin Lopez. In 1997, he established Aguila Raid Records, his own record company, in Chicago. Then, in 2003, he established his own publishing company, Aguila Raid Publishing, with the purpose of “recruiting people who write…and to present their songs to multinational record labels or famous groups.” Born in Santa Maria del Oro, Durango, Pedro Avila has been proudly involved in the music from his home state since he was 12 years old. As a music publisher, some of his greatest achievements have been the three chart-topping singles recorded by Alacranes Musical: “Por Tu Amor” (2006), “Sin Tu Amor” (2007), and “Dame Tu Amor” (2008-2009). Those three songs belong to his publishing catalog and are by new songwriters. In regards to the current financial state of music publishers, Pedro Avila states that “it’s one of the businesses that, up until now, has maintained itself. The economy has not affected it or brought it down. It’s what I’ve been saying to composers and other publishers. It hasn’t been hit! The best way to maintain this business is to continue making good music, music Number ONE with three original Durangüense songs that people like and that’s not a struggle to place on the radio.” — What are the most recent signings by Aguila Raid Publishing? — We’ve affiliated various songwriters, obviously with SESAC Latina. There are about seven in the Regional Mexican genre. We’ve also signed composers in the romantic pop genre. — It seems that you’re talking about young people, songwriters with a lot of potential. — That’s right! All of them are young and bring a lot of great material to the table. Material that will help us achieve our objective of placing songs with recording artists and placing songs on the radio. — What’s it like to be a producer, publisher, label executive, artist manager, and concert promoter? — We try to do everything the best we can. I’m also a songwriter. There are a lot of things we try to do. — How do you resolve, therefore, the problem of having enough time to listen to music and determine what gets recorded, when, and who will record it? — We give ourselves the opportunity. It can be on a plane, or while we’re waiting for a flight. We listen. We read. We mentally imagine what a song can sound like and what can be done with it once we enter the recording studio. When you work in something you enjoy, you’ll always find time and space to dedicate to it. — What does 2010 have in store for you? — I hope it’s good. We are working hard so that it will be that way. 2009 was a tough year because the economic crisis affected us all. In 2010, we have to adapt to what we have and work…work a lot in order to survive. We have to try to solve our problems and find the best way out of them in order to avoid affecting people. We produce events around the country with different artists and in different genres. We do this for both the United States and Mexico. The only thing he demands is “that they have something original to say and that they have the desire to grow in an organic way.” In regards to Volumen Cero, the rock band with which he burst onto the Latin alternative music scene, he points out that he’s “taking a break in order to launch a compilation of singles and video clips next year.” words: composing, producing, and sharing. It’s on that foundation that he continues to work, with the conviction that he still has many songs to write and many albums to produce. Among the most recent and vital of his creative offerings, what stands out is Chenoa’s new album “Desafiando la Gravedad,” where he is the producer and co-writer of 9 songs. It includes a duet with Gloria Trevi that he wrote: “Nada de Nada.” Another professional assignment has been Ana Isabelle’s album “Mi Sueño,” where he has served as the producer of half the repertoire. Another standout is “Vivire,” a moving ballad that served as the letter of introduction to Mexican singer Yahir’s last album, which reached #1 in his country. The list of those who are connected to his talent includes Paulina Rubio, for whom he wrote – along with Rafa Vergara and the artist herself – the third single from her album “Gran City Pop” titled “Algo De Ti.” Taking a risk by presenting a pre-production first single, Los Convertibles entered the Latin rock music scene in Puerto Rico with “Y Yo Tambien.” The continuous line extended rapidly with “Sesion,” an emotional discharge full of concepts left open to interpretation. The substantial and authentic is exalted as the basis of their project. Los Convertibles don’t want to “convert” anyone. “It’s the people who have to decide for themselves.Yes or no; if they accept it or reject it,” they state in relation to their music in this crucial stage of their launch. No one wants to impose themselves, except in relation to honesty. In a set-up where no one gives orders to anyone else, the band’s members are Danovan, Xavier, and Pedro.
