DESCRIPTION The usual image of the Jáen countryside is of hills planted with groves of perfectly-aligned olive trees dotted with white farmhouses. However Jáen offers other very different landscapes. In contrast to the usual image, the province is practically surrounded by mountain ranges which shelter the upper reaches of the Río Guadalquivir. To the south there is the Sierra Sur and the Sierra Mágina; to the east the, sierras of the Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas; to the north the, Sierra Morena and, to the west, the mountainous crescent from which flows the Guadalquivir. The route passes through the sierras to the north and east of the province of Jáen. It enters the province from Hoya de Baza via the valley of the Guadiana Menor an area of semi desert with amazing river canyons. From here the route goes on to the Sierra de Cazorla, crossing through the wilder and less touristic parts. It enters the Sierra de Segura via the Campos de Hernán Perea following the traditional transhumance routes used by shepherds taking their flocks to winter pastures in the Sierra Morena. The ride the the valley of the follows the Río Segura, which flows into the Mediterrean, before crosssing into the valley of the Río Guadalquivir with vies over the El Tranco reservoir. We then go over the he Cumbres de Beas before leaving the Parque Natural at Beas de Segura. For a few kilometres the route passes through olive groves in the valley of the Río Guadalimar, one of the first areas to obtain a certificate of origin for its olives. The route continues into the Sierra Morena passing through the villages of Aldeahermosa, Aldeaquemada and La Carolina which were founded after the reconquista. While the villages may be relatively new, the sierra is older than Andalucía itself – during the Jurassic period the sierra formed the coastline and the land that makes up the present-day region lay under the sea. A sierra of pine forests, of dehesas del toro (bull ranches) and rivers that wind their way through deep canyons. Descending further south we head towards the Valle del Guadalquivir, which we reach by passing through the city of Andújar – a city that offers the opportunity to rest and resupply before we continue, following the river, towards Marmolejo, and a little further on we leave the province of Jáen and enter Córdoba - climbing again into the Sierra Morena. It is a long section through wild and mountanous country in the north east of the Sierra de Cazorla climbing the valley of the upper Río Guadalentín along the Cañada del Mesto, a traditional route into the sierra which fortunately has not been turned into a road. It can be muddy after rain. Once we have reached the top of the valley of the Guadalentín, and passing close to the highest peaks of the Cazorla, the route enters the Sierra de Segura and the countryside changes completely. The abundant pine woods give way to an arid, almost lunar, landscape pockmarked with sinkholes. These are the Campos de Hernán Perea crisscrossed by herders’ trails. Reaching an altitude of nearly1800m, we come to the source of the Río Segura and, a few kilometres further on, Pontones and the end of the section. DESCRIPTION In this section the route passes through the easternmost part of the Sierra de Segura. From Hornos we descend to the banks of the Embalse del Tranco (El Tranco reservoir) and then follow its shore on the Camino de la Confederación Hidrográfica del Guadalquivir. The camino was built in the forties to trace the highwater mark of the reservoir. After 10 kilometres of enjoying the rid along the shore of the reservoir until we reach the dam and the settlement of El Tranco. Here there are various bars where you can gather your strength for the next part of the section which is much harder. After a few kilometres of tarmac we take a turning that climbs to the Cumbres de Beas, and then we descend to the Beas de Segura. The views of the Risca del Guijarrón and the route past the abandoned hamlet of Los Mansegosos, make up for the hard work. However not all the views are quite so beautiful, as the damage from the disastrous fire of 2005 can be seen for a large part of the section. It’s a long section but there are outstanding views as the road from Aldeaquemada passes through narrow mountain passes. These sierras are full of wildlife and an encounter with wild animals is practically guaranteed. This area is also rich in history. In addition to the remains of Roman roads, the reconquest of Al Andalus began here with the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa. For centuries these sierras were the natural frontier between the Christian and Moorish kingdoms, so the battle was a decisive turning point. The route leaves from Aldeaquemada along the road to Santa Elena, a narrow winding road that is the only link between the village and the rest of Andalucía. A narrow mountain pass takes us to the Río Despeñaperros. From here we follow a pista that takes us to the heart of the Parque Natural and then passing over the remains of the old Roman road to Miranda del Rey, and the ruins of the baths at La Aliseda. We then ride on to the village of Navas de Tolosa, and a little further on, to La Carolina.
