DESCRIPTION
The usual image of the Jáen countryside is of hills planted
with groves of perfectly-aligned olive trees dotted with white
farmhouses. However Jáen offers other very different
landscapes. In contrast to the usual image, the province is
practically surrounded by mountain ranges which shelter the
upper reaches of the Río Guadalquivir. To the south there is
the Sierra Sur and the Sierra Mágina; to the east the, sierras
of the Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas; to the north the, Sierra
Morena and, to the west, the mountainous crescent from
which flows the Guadalquivir.
The route passes through the sierras to the north and east of
the province of Jáen. It enters the province from Hoya de Baza
via the valley of the Guadiana Menor an area of semi desert
with amazing river canyons. From here the route goes on to
the Sierra de Cazorla, crossing through the wilder and less
touristic parts. It enters the Sierra de Segura via the Campos
de Hernán Perea following the traditional transhumance
routes used by shepherds taking their flocks to winter
pastures in the Sierra Morena. The ride the the valley of the
follows the Río Segura, which flows into the Mediterrean,
before crosssing into the valley of the Río Guadalquivir with
vies over the El Tranco reservoir. We then go over the he
Cumbres de Beas before leaving the Parque Natural at Beas
de Segura.
For a few kilometres the route passes through olive groves in
the valley of the Río Guadalimar, one of the first areas to
obtain a certificate of origin for its olives. The route continues
into the Sierra Morena passing through the villages of
Aldeahermosa, Aldeaquemada and La Carolina which were
founded after the reconquista. While the villages may be
relatively new, the sierra is older than Andalucía itself –
during the Jurassic period the sierra formed the coastline and
the land that makes up the present-day region lay under the
sea. A sierra of pine forests, of dehesas del toro (bull ranches)
and rivers that wind their way through deep canyons.
Descending further south we head towards the Valle del
Guadalquivir, which we reach by passing through the city of
Andújar – a city that offers the opportunity to rest and
resupply before we continue, following the river, towards
Marmolejo, and a little further on we leave the province of
Jáen and enter Córdoba - climbing again into the Sierra
Morena.

DESCRIPTION
This section starts at the pantano (reservoir) of La Bolera,
where there is a campsite and other accommodation nearby as
well as other services useful to touring cyclists.
It is a long section through wild and mountanous country in
the north east of the Sierra de Cazorla climbing the valley of
the upper Río Guadalentín along the Cañada del Mesto, a
traditional route into the sierra which fortunately has not
been turned into a road. It can be muddy after rain.
Once we have reached the top of the valley of the Guadalentín,
and passing close to the highest peaks of the Cazorla, the
route enters the Sierra de Segura and the countryside
changes completely. The abundant pine woods give way to an
arid, almost lunar, landscape pockmarked with sinkholes.
These are the Campos de Hernán Perea crisscrossed by
herders’ trails. Reaching an altitude of nearly1800m, we come
to the source of the Río Segura and, a few kilometres further
on, Pontones and the end of the section.

DESCRIPTION
From Pontón Bajo the route follows an earth track along the
Río Segura. A few kilometres further on we leave the river,
climbing along the course of the Masegoso arroyo (small river),
one of the sources of Río Segura, before coming to the “La
Cumbre” road.
Following the road, the route follows dividing line between the
the slopes that face the Mediterranean and the slopes that
face the Atlantic. After passing the iconic peak of El Yelmo, the
road makes a vertiginous descent of the La Garganta
barranco (valley/canyon).
A few kilometres before the end of the section we leave the
road and take the waymarked PR (Pequeño Recorrido) hiking
trail which leads us along a narrow and vertiginous path
constructed on an aqueduct [check photos], to Hornos de
Segura. An enchanting village which has been declared a
Conjunto Histórico Artístico.
[NOTA: at km point 6th the track is interrupted because a
ilegal fence. We recomend to ride this section to Hornos by the
“La Cumbre road”. Few cars and good views]

DESCRIPTION
In this section the route passes through the easternmost part
of the Sierra de Segura. From Hornos we descend to the
banks of the Embalse del Tranco (El Tranco reservoir) and
then follow its shore on the Camino de la Confederación
Hidrográfica del Guadalquivir. The camino was built in the
forties to trace the highwater mark of the reservoir.
After 10 kilometres of enjoying the rid along the shore of the
reservoir until we reach the dam and the settlement of El
Tranco. Here there are various bars where you can gather
your strength for the next part of the section which is much
harder.
After a few kilometres of tarmac we take a turning that climbs
to the Cumbres de Beas, and then we descend to the Beas de
Segura.
The views of the Risca del Guijarrón and the route past the
abandoned hamlet of Los Mansegosos, make up for the hard
work. However not all the views are quite so beautiful, as the
damage from the disastrous fire of 2005 can be seen for a
large part of the section.

DESCRIPTION
We take the road out of Beas. We soon turn off the road and
onto the track that follows the left bank of Río Barrizal. (In
periods of rainy weather stay on the road for another 4 kms
towars Villacarillo before turning off and rejoining the route at
the 4.85 kilometre point). Later we cross over the main
Córdoba-Albacete road. Here we pick up the drover’s road that
skirts the El Cornicabral aerodrome before crossing the Río
Guadalimar by the Roman “Puente Mocho” bridge.
We follow agricultural tracks through olive groves before
passing the hamlet of Camporedondo and heading towards
Chiclana de Segura, a village perched on the Cerro de la
Muela. The village is worth a detour and the climb to admire
the view from the “Balcón de las Cuatro Provincias”. If you
decide not to make the climb the trail skirts the cerro and
comes out onto the road by the Ermita de Nazaret. We then
follow a tarmac agricultural track to arrive at Aldeahermosa.

DESCRIPTION
We set off again from Aldeahermosa, through whose centre
passes the ancient Vía Augusta (now the Calle Real), leaving
the tarmac to head into the Sierra Morena.
Almost 40 kms of pista take us through wild mountain areas
and the valleys of the rivers Dañador and Guadalén before
climbing towards Aldeaquemada.
There are three water fountains on the route as far as the
Cortijo de La Ballestera but after that there there are no water
sources until the end of the section.
Reaching a double crossroads, called the “Cuatro Caminos” we
turn left to follow, at first, the “Cañada Real de los Serranos”.
We leave the drover's road and pass the abandoned Cortijo de
los Tejos. We ride through some beautiful spots before coming
to a finca (hunting estate) owned by the muncipality, with a
route through especially for cyclists. Before reaching
Aldeaquemada we pas by the impressive Cascada de La
Cimbarra waterfall.

DESCRIPTION
In this section we ride through the Parque Natural de
Despeñaperros. It’s a long section but there are outstanding
views as the road from Aldeaquemada passes through narrow
mountain passes. These sierras are full of wildlife and an
encounter with wild animals is practically guaranteed.
This area is also rich in history. In addition to the remains of
Roman roads, the reconquest of Al Andalus began here with
the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa. For centuries these sierras
were the natural frontier between the Christian and Moorish
kingdoms, so the battle was a decisive turning point.
The route leaves from Aldeaquemada along the road to Santa
Elena, a narrow winding road that is the only link between the
village and the rest of Andalucía. A narrow mountain pass
takes us to the Río Despeñaperros. From here we follow a
pista that takes us to the heart of the Parque Natural and then
passing over the remains of the old Roman road to Miranda
del Rey, and the ruins of the baths at La Aliseda. We then
ride on to the village of Navas de Tolosa, and a little further
on, to La Carolina.

We follow the crest of the sierra through a pastoral lanscape.
On our right we can see the the valle of the Río Grande and on
our left the valley of the Guadalquivir the villages Guarromán y
Carboneros amid a sea of olive trees.
The route hardly presents any physical difficulty passing over
gentle hills. At a couple of points on the route care is needed
to avoid a wrong turn. You also need to watch out for livestock
along the way.
We pass by the cortijos of Los Ruices, Los Cuellos, Los
Quintos, La Nava and Salcedo.
The final part of the section is on a flat trail called the Camino
de Majadavieja which takes us to Baños de la Encina.

DESCRIPTION
We leave Baños de la Encina, where you can see the
impressive Castillo de Burgalimar. Built in 968, without using
stone.
We set off from the plaza del ayuntamiento, from here we take
the road that skirts the hill on which the castle is built and
then turn off to the right (on the JV-504-A), heading towards
the reservoirat El Rumblar. We ride over the dam and pick up
the track that takes us towards Andújar. The route passes
various cortijos and fuentes (water fountains).
Near the Cortijo de Gorgogil we are entering an area that
remains a refuge for the Iberian lynx, and it’s also not
uncommon to come across deer. From here we can either take
the JV-5015, or a trail with some rocky sections.
The first 5 kilometres in the valley of the Guadalquivir are on
the road until we reach the Los Rubiales after which we ride
along a pista to Andújar, coming into the village near the
hospital.
