PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
We are looking forward to another outstanding school year at
East High. As we begin a new year, it is always enjoyable to
reflect on our experiences and look towards a bright future. One
of the enduring strengths at EHS is our wonderful parent
participation. They provide meals for teachers and staff
members during Parent/Teacher conferences, as well as treats
and benefits for teachers. The students appreciate the Freshmen
Fair, Student of the Month, and the Graduation Party. We
extend our sincerest thanks to all of the hard working members
of East’s PTSA.
We often hear how education has changed and how difficult it
is to reach out and connect students to school. Going to school
has always been the best part of the day for a lot of students –
particularly those students escaping from their sometimes
painful life away from school. I will always remember those
teachers that had the largest impact on me as a person. Each
teacher, advisor, or coach that influenced me in a ssignificant
manner showed that they believed in me, actually talked to me,
and genuinely were interested in how I felt that day and what
was going on in my life. I would see them at extra
extra-curricular
events and they were the adults in school that always seem
seemed to
be available before school, after class, during lunch, or after
school. Your students are fortunate to have so many of these
same caring and committed teachers at East!
The research is fairly consistent that students generally benefit
from the many opportunities afforded them. Most of the studies
in this area bear out that the numerous advantages include:
having better grades, a decrease in absenteeism, having higher
standardized test scores and higher educational attainment, and
having a higher self-concept.

At East High, we are proud to support over 40 clubs and 16
sport teams that provide a way for students to meet other
students, connect to the school,, compete in healthy activities,
and provide service to the community. One excellent example
is the over 150 active members of the National Honor Society,
who maintain an exceptionally high GPA and who participate
in at least one volunteer project each month.

AVID BINDERS: HOW & WHY
East has implemented a school wide AVID program helping to
ensure that all students are college and career ready. AVID
stands for Advancement via Individual Determination. AVID
focuses on 5 main academic skills: writing, inquiry, reading,
organization, and collaboration (WICOR). As a part of our
school wide AVID focus, every 9th and 10th grade student at
East High School will receive the tools needed to be successful
in school.

Day Planner
Organization is an important skill in school, career, and other
aspects of daily life. The AVID binder is an organizational tool
to help students maintain notes, school work, and class
materials. Students with their AVID binder will be prepared for
every class. AVID binders are also an excellent resource for
parents. Parents can easily access their student’s AVID binder
and day planner to ensure all expected school work is complete.
9th and 10th grade students are expected to maintain a binder,
which has been provided to them, along with all of the
necessary items needed. Students are expected to keep it
organized using the AVID methods they are taught. Divider
tabs will be structured as MESSE (Math, English, Science,
Social Studies, and Electives). Students will be assessed on
organization and preparation of all their materials. The binder
will be evaluated weekly and taken as an assessment
grade. Students should spend no more than 15 minutes each day
organizing and completing their notes. It should be a red flag to
parents if their student spends two or more hours the night
before a binder check.
AVID IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE.
AVID began at East High just 9 short years ago with 23
students and has now grown to serve over 215 first generation
college-bound students. AVID (Advancement Via Individual
Determination) students are defying the statistics and becoming
the first in their families to attend college. The AVID
graduates of 2015 continue to collect scholarship dollars for
their college dreams - earning over 1.3 million dollars so far!
East High has 9 sections of AVID being taught by 4 teachers:
Shandre Dovale and Cip Petersen teach the 10th grade elective,
Andrew Platt teaches the 11th graders and is busy getting them
ready for the ACT exam and Cate Praggastis has the 9th and
12th grade electives. The seniors are busy applying for
scholarships and ALL AVID seniors have already applied for
the University of Utah and will apply to Westminster College
next week.
AVID is intended to assist the motivated student in pursuing
their college and career goals. The AVID College Readiness
Program guides students with good study skills and
determination. Students apply to the 4 year program and once
accepted, work with teachers, counselors and tutors to develop
study skills and take college prep and advanced courses needed
for college entry. AVID opens the door to students who dream
big! And provides them with a path to achieve their
dreams. AVID helps them take the steps and learn the habits
they need to get where they want to be! In AVID we say,

SENIOR SEOP’S
We have begun senior CCR’s (Career & College Readiness
Plan – formally known as SEOP’s). A letter will be sent home
with information regarding your student’s appointment. If that
appointment doesn’t fit your schedule, please call (801-5842923) the counseling center to re-schedule.
PSAT
The PSAT will be given at East High on Wednesday, Oct. 28,
2015 at 7:45 am in the ballroom. This is a good test to take for
any student who is serious about attending a four year college
or university. The score is not part of a student’s official high
school record and there is valuable feed-back concerning the
student’s academic strengths and weaknesses.
The cost is $15.00 to be paid in advance to the school treasurer.
We also have 11 fee waivers for students who are on
free/reduced lunch. We will register the first 70 students on a
first come, first served basis starting on Oct. 12.
The test is primarily targeted for juniors, but we will register
interested sophomores beginning on Oct. 22th.
AFTER-SCHOOL CREDIT RECOVERY
After school credit recovery has begun in room B-215. You
MUST bring with you a referral form from your counselor, and
receipt from the treasurer. The fee is $15.00/qtr. Credit. This
program will be held on A days only from 2:45 pm - 3:45 pm.

A menudo escuchamos cómo la educación ha cambiado y lo

AVID AGLUTINANTES: CÓMO ¿POR QUÉ?
La escuela de East High ha implementado un programa
AVID ayuda a garantizar que todos los estudiantes

Organización es una habilidad importante en la escuela, carrera

estudiantes con sus ávidos binder se prepararán para cada clase.
AVID carpetas también son un recurso excelente para los
padres. Los padres pueden acceder fácilmente a su estudiante
ávido de binder y día planificador para asegurar que toda
escuela espera finalizar los trabajos. 9O y 10o grado se espera
que los estudiantes mantengan un clasificador, que ha sido

AVID ES HACER LA DIFERENCIA.
AVID comenzó en el East High a tan sólo 9 años con 23
alumnos y ahora ha crecido y sirve más de 215 de estudiantes

SENIOR de SEOP
Hemos comenzado altos de CCR (Carrera y Plan de
preparación universitaria, formalmente conocido como SEOP's
). Se enviará una carta con información a casa del estudiante en
cuanto a su nombramiento. Si la cita no se ajusta a su agenda,
por favor llame al (801-584 -2923) el centro de asesoramiento
para programar de nuevo.
PSAT
El PSAT se darán a conocer en este alto el miércoles, 28 oct,
2015 en 7:45 en el salón de baile. Esta es una buena prueba que
se debe tomar para cualquier estudiante que se toma en serio
acerca de la asistencia a un niño de cuatro años colegio o
universidad. La puntuación no es parte de un estudiante de la
secundaria oficial del registro y no es valioso feed-back sobre
el académico fortalezas y debilidades.
El costo es de $15.00 que se pagan por adelantado a la escuela
tesorero. También tenemos 11 exenciones de las tasas para los
