December 8, 2013—Second Sunday of Advent
Feast of the Immaculate Conception
of the Blessed Virgin Mary
December 9
It’s important to understand what the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception is and what it is not. Some people
think the term refers to Christ’s conception in Mary’s
womb without the intervention of a human father; but that
is the Virgin Birth. Others think the Immaculate Conception means Mary was conceived “by the power of the Holy
Spirit,” in the way Jesus was, but that, too, is incorrect.
The Immaculate Conception means that Mary, whose conception was brought about the normal way, was conceived
without original sin or its stain—that’s what “immaculate”
means: without stain. The essence of original sin consist
in the deprivation of sanctifying grace, and its stain is a
corrupt nature. Mary was preserved from these defects by
God’s grace; from the first instant of her existence she
was in the state of sanctifying grace and was free from the
corrupt nature original sin brings.
When discussing the Immaculate Conception, an implicit
reference may be found in the angel’s greeting to Mary.
The angel Gabriel said, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with
you” (Luke 1:28). The phrase “full of grace” is a translation of the Greek word kecharitomene. It therefore expresses a characteristic quality of Mary.
Promulgation of the Dogma
On December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX officially declared the
Immaculate Conception a dogma of the Church, which
means that all Christians are bound to accept it as true.

Stewardship Thoughts
We have so many very generous parishioners and we
thank you for your continued support of St. Mary Church
and School. However, we find that our Offertory is down
compared to this time last year.
Have you thought of using “Online Banking” to simplify
your stewardship responsibilities and make sure that even
if you are away your tithing gets to the parish?
You can set up an online payment, through your bank that
is direct to Saint Mary Church by creating a “new payee”
with the following information:
Payee Full Name: Saint Mary Church
Address: 1000 N. Jefferson Avenue, Goldsboro, NC 27530
-3141
Phone Number: 919-734-5033
Please put your last name as the “name on the account”
and as the account number.

SVDP Christmas Basket Supplies
Needed
Our St. Vincent de Paul Society is gearing
up to feed 40 Families in Wayne County
for Christmas. These basket don’t just
have food in them...they include cleaning
products, personal care items and a gift of
a small Nativity set for the families.
At this time we could use the following items:
Turkey, canned ham (1-2lb), chicken, large canned yams
(prefer not in syrup), greens (collard, kale, turnip), mixed
vegetables, carrots, peas, corn, green beans (large size cans
work best), canned fruits (fruit cocktail, peaches, pears,
applesauce). Thank you for you generosity!!!
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
"Outward signs instituted by Christ to give grace" is the often-memorized definition of sacrament, but through four
decades of reform we have rediscovered the power of sacrament to bestow grace by reshaping our lives as individuals
and communities. Not so long ago, most people were not
attentive to the nature of sacrament as an act of the Church,
a power that flows from the Body of Christ. Fifty years ago,
we were inclined to see a sacrament as an encounter between Christ and an individual.
Today, we see that definition does not go far enough. God's
grace is not a trickle, but a gushing torrent washing over the
whole Church. Like a photographer pulling back the camera
for a broader picture, today we are not only interested in the
person who is being baptized, reconciled, or anointed. We
think about how celebrating a sacrament transforms a community. We think about the grace given by Christ to the
community that baptizes or marries or ordains or confirms.
Sacraments are for the good of the community. Even when
it appears to be a private, hidden moment, as in individual
confession, a sacrament is always for the sake of the whole
body, always more than "meets the eye."

MARAVILLAS

siglo.
