From
ancient times up until the 18th Century
when it began to be understood, leprosy has
been a feared disease that meant a slow death. Lepers were
kept away from their families and communities out of fear
that the curse that had fallen upon them might expand to
others. And even though most scholars believe that all of the
cases described as leprosy might have been of other origin,
leprosy is known to have affected people for at least the last 4
thousand years. In spite of medical advances that allow for a cure, leprosy remains endemic in a number of countries of Asia, Africa and South America. Even
today, the word “leprosy” is associated with isolation. When someone is said to be
treated like a leper, it is saying that they are shunned, cut off from their community, left outside of society.
The
healing of Naaman the Syrian in our reading from the
nd
2 book of Kings and of the 10 lepers in
the Gospel are stories not just of a
physical relief from a disfiguring disease but of a healing of the separation
from community. These lepers would
have been expected to separate themselves from family and friends, to live
alone or with others with their same
misfortune. The healed Samaritan leper
understood what this healing meant
and returned to thank Jesus for ending
his isolation.
What
might we learn from
these lepers? How often
do we isolate ourselves or others because of things that have been said or
done? We may not suffer from Hansen’s disease but we do suffer from the
isolation that comes from our sinfulness and unwillingness to forgive others. Into this isolation, Jesus inserts
himself to bring us healing if we ask it.
Like Naaman and like the Samaritan,
our response should be sincere gratitude.

Desde
la antigüedad hasta el Siglo 18 cuando comenzó a ser entendido,
la lepra es una enfermedad de temer que significaba una muerte
lenta. Los leprosos se mantuvieron alejados de sus familias y comunidades por temor a que la maldición que había caído sobre ellos podría ampliar a otras personas. Y aunque la mayoría de los estudiosos creen que todos los casos que se describen como la lepra podría haber sido de otro origen, la lepra es conocida por

su misma desgracia. El leproso samaritano curado entiende lo que esto significa
la curación y volvió a agradecer a Jesús
para poner fin a su aislamiento.

On Friday evening, October 1st, four of
SMM’s tireless servants to God’s poor and
homeless joined volunteers from other parishes throughout the San Pedro region at the
Reef Hotel in Long Beach to be recognized
and honored for selfless service to the hundreds of needy in our communities and to
the Church. The honorees are:

Cuando vamos a algún restaurante y el mesero(a) nos
traen los alimentos siempre acostumbramos a darle las
gracias, cuando trae el agua, la ensalada, la comida.
Cada vez le decimos gracias. Pero en nuestra casa no
lo acostumbramos. Tal vez tenemos la idea de que es
obligación de que nos sirvan o tal vez tenemos más
confianza con la familia y asumimos que ellos saben
que estamos agradecidos de que nos den las cosas.
Lo mismo hacemos algunos con Dios, no le agradecemos cuando vamos a comer, cuando nos levantamos o
al acostarnos. Pensamos que Dios como nuestro Padre,
tiene la obligación de darnos todo.
¿Cuándo le damos gracias a Dios?
Hacemos sensible el agradecimiento a Dios cuando
experimentamos su bondad en algún acontecimiento.
Especialmente cuando recuperamos la salud después
de una enfermedad. También le damos gracias cada
día al despertarnos por darnos un nuevo día, o antes de
comer le damos gracias por darnos alimentos, en fin
siempre estamos agradecidos con El por todo los que
nos da.
En la Biblia hay muchos casos de salud restaurada. En
las lecturas de hoy vemos la lepra como enfermedad
penosa, por tanto, la salud recobrada por el poder de
Dios, como un don extraordinario. En la primera lectura vemos el caso del sirio Naamán. Sabemos que se
sintió defraudado porque el profeta Eliseo le dio una
fórmula muy simple: que se bañara siete veces en el
río Jordán. A Naamán eso le pareció muy sencillo, y
por lo tanto, que no iba a resultar. Pensó que había
otros ríos mejores, que su lepra nada tenía que ver con
su baño en el río, que era demasiado fácil el tratamiento, etcétera. Aconsejado por sus criados, Naamán se
baño siete veces, y dice el Libro Segundo de los Reyes que “su carne quedo limpia de la lepra como la un
niño”. Esto era lo que deseaba ardientemente Naamán,
y le fue concedido por Dios mediante las instrucciones
del profeta Eliseo. Ahora lo interesante es ver su actitud de agradecimiento.
La acción de dar gracias
Tanto el profeta Eliseo, como el leproso Naamán,
acuerdan que la acción de gracias es solo para Dios.
Eliseo rechaza un obsequio de parte de Naamán. Solo
Dios merece reconocimiento, alabanza y acción de
gracias. Los ministros de Dios somos simples instrumentos, pero la acción principal es de Dios que nos
usa como seres inteligentes. Aunque hay algunos que
dicen que ellos curan, y hasta por teléfono, y nunca se

lo acreditan a Dios ya que dicen ser los escogidos y
por eso tienen el don de curar.
En el evangelio de hoy vemos otro caso de curación de
lepra que curó el mismo Cristo. Pero solo uno de ellos
vino a mostrar su agradecimiento, y Jesús le pregunta
“Los otros nueve ¿dónde están? Jesús les había puesto
una condición, que era presentarse a los sacerdotes. El
quiere curarlos con su poder, pero haciendo que intervengan los hombres a favor de los hombres. Asimismo cura ahora la lepra del alma, el pecado, mediante el
ministerio de los sacerdotes, (confesión) pero la acción principal es Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, a quien debemos agradecer la salud del alma y el cuerpo. Con estos dos ejemplos tomados de la Biblia, hemos visto la
necesidad del agradecimiento para con Dios.
¿Somos personas gratas o
ingratas con Dios?
Preguntémonos ahora, en un examen de conciencia: y
nosotros, ¿somos personas gratas por el agradecimiento, o ingratas y desagradables por nuestra indiferencia
para con quien nos ha hecho algún bien, y sobre todo,
para con Dios, dador de todo bien?
Durante el año han inventado algunos días de agradecimiento. Tal vez los invento algún comerciante, o
quizá alguien que tenía un corazón grande. Festejamos
el día de la madre, el día del padre. Aquí en los Estados Unidos tenemos el día de acción de Gracias (mejor
conocido como el día del pavo). Si somos buenos hijos
y tenemos fe, no debemos esperar estos días para expresar nuestro reconocimiento a quienes nos han dado
la vida, y a Dios. No es muy difícil y podemos traer un
poco de luz y consuelo a los viejos que se quedaron
solos en casa. Una oración recitada en privado o en
familia, cuando vamos por la noche a descansar, aumentara nuestra esperanza en Dios que está con nosotros.
Reflexión
Gracias Señor por el trabajo, por la salud, por los amigos, por los que me quieren y por los que no, también.
El decir “gracias Señor” nos recuerda que Dios es
nuestro Padre y que se interesa por todos los pasos que
damos. Hoy estamos reunidos aquí como hermanos
para dar gracias a Dios. Gracias por el sacrificio de
Jesús y el don de la fe. Gracias por alimentarnos con el
pan de vida eterna. Gracias por hacernos miembros de
su familia y darnos muchos hermanos en la fe. Y al
salir a la calle, abriremos los ojos y notaremos con
sorpresa que hay muchos que hacen algo por nosotros,
y a quienes debemos decir ¡Gracias!

THE NEW ROMAN MISSAL
A Deeper Meaning,
but the Same Mass
In Advent of 2011, a year from this coming
Advent, the Church in the English speaking
parts of the world will be publishing and implementing a new translation of the Roman
Missal. The Missal is the book of prayers used
by the priest and community in the celebration
of Mass. Before saying anything else, it is important to make clear that this is not a new
Mass but a new English
translation of the Latin
Missal which is standard
for churches throughout
the world.
In the months ahead,
you will be given information about the new Missal
so that you will feel comfortable when it is implemented next year. In sharing this information, we
hope to both broaden your knowledge of the
history and practice of our Catholic worship
and to answer questions you might have about
the Mass.
WHAT IS THE ROMAN MISSAL
AND HOW IS IT USED?
As mentioned above, the Roman Missal is
the book of prayers and instructions governing
our celebration of the Mass. The book is called
the “Roman” Missal because historically, it is
tied to the celebration of the Mass in Rome by
the Pope. It is also called “Roman” to distinguish it from other Eastern Rite Missals which
govern the celebration of liturgies in other
Catholic Churches which, though they are in
union with us as Roman Catholics, might have
unique liturgical practices which are historically, culturally and linguistically distinct from
ours. In the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, we
are blessed to have churches with members of
the Armenian, Assyrian Chaldean, Byzantine
Ruthenian, Coptic, Maronite, Melkite Greek,
Russian Greek, Syriac, Syro-Malabar and

Ukranian-Byzantine Rites, all Catholic in union with the Church of Rome but each with
their own (non-Roman) liturgical practices.
Since the beginning of the publication of the
first English language missal in 1973, we have
called the book of prayers for the celebration
of Mass the “Sacramentary”. This was to distinguish it from the old Latin missals that contained both the prayers and readings for Mass.
After the 2nd Vatican Council, with the reform
of the liturgy, Sacred Scripture was given a
much more vital role in the Mass and the
number of books from the
Bible and passages taken
from those books was
greatly expanded. Because
of this expansion in the
use of scripture, the Readings for Mass would no
longer fit in a single book
and so they were separated out into what was to
be called the Lectionary
and Book of the Gospels.
The Sacramentary only held the prayers of the
priest and people for Mass, including special
prayers for feast days, for Sacraments when
celebrated during Mass and for special occasions. With the new missal, we will return to
the old name, The Roman Missal.
An important part of the Missal is the new
General Instruction on the Roman Missal
(G.I.R.M.) and the ‘rubrics’ or instructions
that are included in with the text of the
prayers. The word ‘rubrics’ comes from the
Latin word for ‘red’ and are typically printed in
red so that the presider can distinguish from
the rest of the text. Typical rubrics might include, “with hands outstretched”, “bows
slightly to the altar”, “shows the host to the
congregation”, and other instructions. Both
the General Instructions and rubrics are specific enough in order to have an orderly celebration and general enough to accommodate
various styles or types of celebration.
