New Maternity Classes
Starting this month, the organization Birth Circle will
hold classes on motherhood for pregnant women
and mothers with babies less than 12 months old.
Women who participate in a class receive a gift card
and possible reimbursement for transportation. If
you participate in each session, you will also receive a gift!

English Class
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:30am—12:00pm
Our English classes are centered around themes that we
use in everyday life. Breakfast is served at 10:00AM, and
staff from the LFC will provide childcare while class is in
session.
Preparación Para La Escuela!

Kindergarten Readiness
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:30am—12:00pm
In this group, volunteers work with children that come
with their parents to the ESL class. This group focuses on
preparing children for Kindergarten by reviewing the alphabet, the colors, and more! Breakfast is served at
10:00am before the ESL class.

composed of a group of Latino parents enrolled at the

We are very proud of our Parent Council who
organized, cooked for, and helped the children
rehearse for what was a magnificent festival! We
hope to make this an annual event! Please

Ingredientes/Ingredients:

1/2 taza melaza / 1/2 cup molasses
4 rodajas de limón, cortado por la mitad / 4 lemon slices, cut in half
12 clavos enteros / 12 whole cloves
2 (2-pulgadas) rajitas de canela / 2 (2-inch) cinnamon sticks
1/4 taza jugo de limón / 1/4 cup lemon juice
Instrucciones:
Hierva a fuego medio-alto la sidra y los 4 ingredientes próximos, mezclando de vez en cuando. Baja el fuego y hierva a fuego
lento por 15 minutos. Quite con un cucharón perforado las rajitas de canela y los clavos y mezcla el jugo de limón. Adorna

Directions:
Bring cider and next 4 ingredients to a boil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally; reduce heat,
and simmer 15 minutes. Remove cinnamon sticks and cloves with a slotted spoon; stir in lemon juice. Garnish with cinnamon
sticks, lemon wedges, or whole cloves, if desired. Enjoy!

Dibuja todas las piezas de las bolsas de dulces encima del

Draw each of the pieces of the sweet bag onto the felt. It is
better to use a ruler so that it comes out as rectangular as
possible. Afterwards, cut out the pieces with scissors. Sew
two large circles of black felt on top of the front piece, and
two small circles of white felt on top of those. These will be
the eyes. Also, to make the mouth, sew a zig-zag onto the
bottom of the felt.
Later, unite each of the pieces for our sweet bags through
the borders, giving them a pretty decoration. Finally, sew in a
handle for the children to hold onto while going from house
to house.

Gracias al apoyo de Jefferson Foundation, Heinz Foundation, y el Immigrants &
Internationals Advisory Council de DHS, el Centro Latino y Casa San José están
uniéndose para hacer este proyecto de Pláticas Comunitarias con la comunidad
Latina que vive en el condado de Allegheny. Nuestra visión es: El condado de
Allegheny es un lugar seguro y amable donde los Latinos pueden vivir, trabajar,
aprender, y tener familiar felices y saludables. Nuestro objetivo es escuchar a la
comunidad Latina del condado de Allegheny para entender mejor y describir las

Have you heard of the Latino Needs Assessment?
Thanks to the support of the Jefferson Foundation, Heinz foundation, and the Immigrants & Internationals Advisory Council, the Latino Family Center and Casa San Jose are embarking on a County Wide Latino Needs Assessment. Our vision is an Allegheny County that is a safe and welcoming place for all Latinos to live, work, learn,
and raise happy and healthy families. Our primary goal is to understand and describe the priorities of the Latino
Community in Allegheny County so that the resources allocated to working with the Latino comunity in Allegheny
County are used wisely and organizations are working collaboratively to strengthen the community and meet any
needs that may arise. We will be using a tool created by Casa de Esperanza– a National Latin@ organization–
called Fuerza Unida to help guide how we do this Needs Assessment. We will be holding listening sessions facilitated by community members around the county (see map) and are seeking community members to sign-up for
the Listening session closest to them. We hope to have between 6-8 females and 6-8 males in each city. Participants will receive a $10 gift card to Walmart. Childcare and light refreshments will be provided. We hope to conclude the listening sessions by December. We will be holding two separate listening sessions with service providers that work with the Latino community on September 15th at the Latino Family Center.

Padres Como Maestros Visitas en La Casa
(PAT)
Este programa es para familias que tienen

Parents AS Teachers Home Visiting Program (PAT)
This program is for families who have children between the ages of 0-5. A Family Development Specialist (FDS) visits families at
least once a month and works with the parents and the children around child development using the curriculum Parents As Teachers. We believe the parent is the child’s FIRST
teacher. The goal for this program is to get
your little ones ready to enter Kindergarten!
