This coming fall
there will be an
opportunity for
parishioners to
participate in
small faith-sharing
communities that meet in homes and other
locations throughout the parish over the course
of six weeks. You don’t have to have been in
a group to start this season as every season is
independent of the others.
The basic Gospel theme of season 5
is evangelization - We Are the Good News!
Look for more info. here in coming weeks.
Small groups begin in October.
If you would like to join a small group this fall
contact Terry in the parish office. 781-8220 ext. 15
or by email [email protected]
We have had to reschedule
September’s Contemplative Rosary to
next Saturday, September 10th.

Special Collection This Weekend
A CALL TO SUPPORT OUR BROTHERS AND
SISTERS IN LOUISIANA • Bishop Garcia has called
for an emergency collection for the 2016 Louisiana Floods
“The recent storms in Louisiana may not have a name, but the
names of those suffering in the wake of the worst flooding since
Hurricane Katrina are our sisters and brothers. As a people of
God, let us come to their aid. Our prayer and material support is
urgently needed to help rebuild lives. As many as 60,000 homes
have been damaged, with nearly 20,000 people being rescued
from the flood waters. Immediate and long-term recovery needs
place tremendous burden on public and private resources.
This is a burden we can help carry as the body of Christ. Faced
with the loss of their worldly possessions and, in some cases,
economic livelihood, the flood waters left thousands of families
feeling isolated and fearful. Let us draw near to them.”
We will be taking up this collection
THIS WEEKEND, September 3-4, 2016.
Funds will be used to support the humanitarian efforts
of Catholic Charities USA and to provide pastoral and
rebuilding support to impacted Catholic dioceses.

Landings Program
Meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7 pm in the
Serra Center. Join us to learn what our new projects are,
and what you can do to help.
Recently, when taking Communion (Pastoral Care)
to a home bound woman, she mentioned that she was ‘new
to this’—had only lately become a Catholic. ”Welcome” I
said. We talked a little and I, being curious, asked what had
drawn her to the Catholic church. “I visited a lot of churches”
she replied “and most of them criticized other faiths. The Catholic
church doesn’t do that”. What a beautiful answer, and I was
humbled by it. It reminded me that I need to always be
mindful of the words I utter! We have no idea of the power of
speech--or actions.
The next meeting of the Social Justice committee will be held
on September 6th in the Serra Room—7 pm.
Come join us over a cup of coffee to hear Terri Clarke our
guest speaker. Plans are ongoing for ways in which we can
help our parishioners in need. We also have a number of
interesting projects planned for the Fall, and would love to
have you join us. Hope to see you on Sept. 6th!

R
EFLECTION OF THE WEEK
September 4, 2016
23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
The people in the large crowd
that Jesus addressed in today’s
Gospel were deeply committed
to loving and honoring their
parents. That’s why Jesus’ words
must have been shocking to them
saying that they must turn from
their parents (some translations
even say “hate”). The point Jesus
wanted to make was that nothing,
not family nor possessions, could
interfere with a person’s choice to
follow Jesus. Followers of Jesus
were to carefully calculate their
commitment. Jesus meticulously
helped them understand this
process by comparing it to a builder
who carefully planned out the
structure to be built before breaking
ground or to a military leader who
calculated the size of his army
versus the opponent’s. The follower
must be willing to pay the price
of discipleship before making the
choice so that he/she doesn’t quit
the commitment.

“People are like stars, some

Here we are at the end of summer.
We have had perfect weather and
enjoyed sharing our special part of the
world with so many visitors. Now
it’s back to school. We welcome new
students to our city and hope they
will enjoy their experience being part
of this wonderful community.
Although we will miss the crowds of
summer we enjoy this quiet time. It’s
time to take inventory and assess our
needs for the coming season. We
have tested a couple of new lines
- one is a selection of plaques with
timeless, inspirational, words and
the other a more artistic line of rustic
crosses with old world charm. These
fit right in with our unique eclectic
mix of Giftware.
We hope you will come in and
browse. Whether you are searching
for a special gift, or just looking - you
will find our staff to be helpful and

Old Mission School
Last week the
teachers of Old
Mission School met
with parents during
several “Back to
School Night” sessions for various
grade levels. The purpose of
these gatherings is to inform our
parent community of curriculum,
procedures, and policies within
different grade levels. We hope
such evenings will provide a
relaxed and informative dialogue
among teachers and parents, our
partners in Catholic education, to
promote a productive and enriched
spirit-filled year for our students.
Old Mission Catholic School is
currently accepting applications for
preschool through eighth grade. Our
entire school community is dedicated to
the development of socially responsible
citizens for the twenty-first century
who are spiritually empowered,
academically enriched, and morally
accountable for their actions. For more
information or to obtain an application,
please visit our website at www.

Come see us. We have openings, and
we have financial assistance. A Catholic
education is an advantage for life.

LA VOZ LATINA
Vigésimo Tercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
Invitado
frecuencia no comprendemos muchas cosas.

A
ño Jubilar de la Misericordia
4 de septiembre de 2016 - VigésimoTercer Domingo
del Tiempo Ordinario
“Si alguno quiere seguirme y. . . prefiere. . .
más a su padre y a su madre, a su esposa
y a sus hijos, a sus hermanos, . .
