Cornelia Blakemore Warner‖ and Laura

annual essay contest sponsored by The
Historical Society, the Library, and the Hudson
Valley Writers’ Center. The villages of
Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow provided the
prizes. Winning essays from this year’s contest
as well as those of previous years can be found

Join the Adult Summer Reading Program (June through August 13) and

A Spirituals Experience
Saturday, June 18 at 2:30 PM/ Soprano, Yolanda F. Johnson, will offer
special insight on traditional spirituals. The concert will include commentary on the historic role of spirituals and a sing-along for audience members to gain a new understanding of these well-known and beloved songs.

Monday, June 27 at 7 PM/ Longtime local resident and author
Herbert Hadad will speak about his book Finding Immortality,
The Making of One American Family. Hadad teaches at the
Hudson Valley Writers’ Center and is a former NY Times
reporter and essayist. Reception and book signing to follow.
Thursday, July 14 at 7 PM/ Emil Draitser, Ph.D., Professor of Russian at
Hunter College will show slides and speak about his book, Stalin's
Romeo Spy: The Remarkable Rise and Fall of the KGB's Most Daring
Operative, a tragic story of a Soviet spy operating in Western countries
between the world wars, who risked his life stealing Hitler's and Mussolini's military secrets, only to be tortured by the Stalin regime and
sentenced to 20 years of hard labor in the Gulag.
Monday, August 1 at 7 PM/ Dr. Richard Borkow will speak about his
book, George Washington’s Westchester Gamble: The Encampment on
the Hudson and the Trapping of Cornwallis. Local historian Richard
Borkow presents the exciting story of the summer of 1781’s Westchester
encampment and Washington’s great gamble that saved the United States.

Puppet Theater/ The renowned theater group
presents their first indoor show featuring handmade
puppets of jaguars, monkeys, and a life-saving sea
turtle. Titled Criss-Crossing Borders, this program
portrays ties between animals and humans and is
presented in Spanish and English by two multitalented performers. Designed for ages 4-10.

Buenas Noticias
Concesión de Praxiar / ha sido concedida con 10.000 dólares por la Fundación Praixar por los
programas de enlaces de la Biblioteca. El dinero será utilizado para la compra de libros, programas
de computación en Ingles y en Español referentes a búsqueda de trabajo y entrenamiento para empezar su propio negocio. Además se comprara nuevos muebles para computadoras.
Una Parada/ Asociación de Warner / Comenzando en Julio / La Biblioteca Warner se asociara
con One Stop Employment Centerein en White Plains. Los residentes colectando subsidio de desempleo en cualquiera de los dos pueblos, pueden utilizar los recursos disponibles en la biblioteca de
Warner para satisfacer sus requisitos de la búsqueda de trabajo sea aplicando o buscando un trabajo
en línea, trabajando en un curriculum vitae, o tomando pruebas localmente en lugar de viajar al One
Stop Employment Center en White Plains.
Cuentos de la Alambra donados a Sleepy Hollow/ El Pueblo de Sleepy Hollow da la bienvenida
al ilustrador español, David Gonzalez Zaafra, quien viajo desde Costa Rica para presentar al Alcalde
de Sleepy Hollow una edición especial, atada a mano, de su libro ―Cuentos de la Alhambra‖ (Tales
of the Alhambra) escrita por Washington Irving. El libro es uno de los 300 que son de edición limitada. El libro estará exhibiéndose al público en la Biblioteca y será añadido a la colección de historia
local.
Ganadores del Concurso de Ensayos para el Hall de la Fama/ El Ensayo de Madeline McGovern ―Worcester Reed y Cornelia Blakemore Warner‖ y el ensayo de Laura Epstein ―Nathan Cobb‖
ganaron el concurso anual de ensayos patrocinado por la Sociedad Histórica, La Biblioteca Warner y
el Centro de Escritores del Valle del Hudson. Los pueblos de Sleepy Hollow y Tarrytown donaran

Tales of the Alhambra donated to
Sleepy Hollow/ The Village of Sleepy Hollow
welcomed Spanish illustrator, David Gonzalez
Zaafra, on Friday, May 20, 2011, who traveled from
Costa Rica to present Mayor Kenneth Wray of
Sleepy Hollow the heralded special hand-bound
edition of his book, "Cuentos de la Alhambra‖
("Tales of the Alhambra"), written by Washington
Irving. The book is one of a limited edition of 300.
The illustrations are lithographs. The book will be
placed in a display case for public viewing at the
Library and then added to the local history
collection.
Warner Library Spring Book Sale Very
Successful
Many thanks to Berkeley Rice and his loyal
volunteers for a very successful book sale. Once
again, concerts, workshops, author visits, children’s
programs and craft supplies will be funded by the
proceeds from the book sale. A special thank-you
to Robert Welsch and his crew from Westover
Landscape Design In Tarrytown.
We are pleased to announce that our new state-ofthe-art lectern with built-in microphone was
purchased with a generous grant from the Friends
of the Library. Thank you Friends!
SUMMER LOANS
Starting June 21, you may borrow fiction and nonfiction adult books and keep them until September
22. Ask at the Circulation Desk for the Summer Loan
period. New books, audio visual materials, children’s
books and books from other libraries are not included.
Good News
Praxair Grant/ Warner Library has been
awarded $10,000 by Praxair Foundation through its
Library Links program. The money will be used to
purchase books and software in Spanish and
English related to job search, retraining and
starting your own business. In addition, we will
purchase new computer furnishings to replace the
old study carrels where the public PC’s are now.
One Stop/ Warner Partnership/ Starting in
July, Warner Library will begin a partnership with
Westchester County’s One Stop Employment
Center. Residents collecting unemployment
insurance in either of the two villages can utilize the
career resources available at the Warner Library to
fulfill their job search requirements by applying for,
or searching for a job online, working on a resume,
or taking tests, rather than having to travel to the
One Stop Center in White Plains.
Good Dog Program at the Library
Good Dog, the program that encourages young readers to read stories
to a friendly and trained therapy dog
will be held on these days: June 25,
3-4 PM, and July 9 and August 20,
11:30 AM-12:30 PM. Please call 6317734 to sign-up.
