The Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered every Saturday from 4:00—4:40pm, and on Tuesday, March 22 from 7:00-8:00pm Attend Nocturnal Adoration on Saturday, March 19 from 8:00pm—5:00am 2016 Lenten Message of Pope Francis “I desire mercy, and not sacrifice” (Mt 9:13) For all of us, then, the season of Lent in this Jubilee Year is a favorable time to overcome our existential alienation by listening to God’s word and by practicing the works of mercy. In the corporal works of mercy we touch the flesh of Christ in our brothers and sisters who need to be fed, clothed, sheltered, visited; in the spiritual works of mercy – counsel, instruction, forgiveness, admonishment and prayer – we touch more directly our own sinfulness. The corporal and spiritual works of mercy must never be separated. By touching the flesh of the crucified Jesus in the suffering, sinners can receive the gift of realizing that they too are poor and in need. By taking this path, the “proud”, the “powerful” and the “wealthy” spoken of in the Magnificat can also be embraced and undeservedly loved by the crucified Lord who died and rose for them. This love alone is the answer to that yearning for infinite happiness and love that we think we can satisfy with the idols of knowledge, power and riches. Yet the danger always remains that by a constant refusal to open the doors of their hearts to Christ who knocks on them in the poor, the proud, rich and powerful will end up condemning themselves and plunging into the eternal abyss of solitude which is Hell. The pointed words of Abraham apply to them and to all of us: “They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them” (Lk 16:29). Such attentive listening will best prepare us to celebrate the final victory over sin and death of the Bridegroom, now risen, who desires to purify his Betrothed in expectation of his coming. Let us not waste this season of Lent, so favorable a time for conversion! We ask this through the maternal intercession of the Virgin Mary, who, encountering the greatness of God’s mercy freely bestowed upon her, was St. Charles Borromeo Parish—celebrating 225 years of faith! the first to acknowledge her lowliness (cf. Lk 1:48) and to call herself the Lord’s humble servant (cf. Lk 1:38). Lenten Prayer of the Week Lord Jesus, on a mountainside You taught Your disciples, and us, how to pray. In the treasured words of the prayer we call Your own, we pray to be forgiven as we have forgiven those who sin against us. Lord, forgive our loveless thoughts and words and our stubborn refusal to forgive others. Teach us to forgive, as on a mountain called Calvary, You forgave even those who crucified You. Amen. Joke of the Week While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins, I used to take my 4 year old daughter on my afternoon rounds. She was unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers and wheelchairs. One day I found her staring at some false teeth soaking in a glass. As I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she merely turned and whispered, “The tooth fairy will never believe this!” Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His Borromeo Family. She was very shy in the classroom and struggled with simple math and reading lessons. She often missed homework assignments and, some days, did not go to school. Her teacher noticed and enrolled Mayra in the school’s tutoring program. In the months that followed, Mayra and Fabricio, her tutor and classmate, spent many afternoons practicing reading and writing stories together. They made up games to practice math. And when they were done, they jumped rope and played in their neighborhood. In the process, the two became good friends. “Fabricio never looked down on me because I had trouble learning,” says Mayra. “He always treated me well.” The extra attention was what Mayra really needed. She lives with her grandmother, Lucia, who works hard to take care of Mayra. She picks coffee on a nearby farm and does laundry to earn money to put food on the table. But this means she doesn’t always have time to help Mayra with her school work. In fact, like many people her age, Lucia cannot read. That’s why Fabricio’s help was so important. Today, Mayra is proud of her reading and math skills. She does her homework and goes to class on time. She is more confident and has a new group of friends. Mayra wants to be a teacher one day. But first, she will become a tutor so she can help her classmates-just as Fabricio helped her. Facts to Consider: Nearly 65% of Hondurans—more than 5 million people—live on less than $2 a day. In response, CRS Honduras is working on projects ranging from agriculture to education. The Food for Education project, which helped Mayra, benefits 53,863 children enrolled in 1,046 pre-primary and primary schools. The project improves literacy, attendance, retention and attentiveness. By providing regular meals at school, students are more likely to go to school—and have the energy to learn. For many students, this may be the best—and only—meal they receive all day. The project supplies basic educational materials, trains teachers to better support students and provides transportation so students can get to school. The project is improving the school with better classrooms, restrooms and safer environments. School gardens are being built to teach students about the importance of healthy food. Catholic Social Teaching: Call to Family, Community and Participation Human beings are social by nature—we need each other. We, like the early disciples, are called to come together and grow as a community—whether that community is in our classroom, workplace or family. Let us pray: For students, young and old, that they be given the opportunities and support they need to pursue their passions, and use their knowledge and skills for the betterment of their community. For more information and downloadable photos, please visit www.crsricebowl.org Spiritual Renewal: Saturday, March 19, 9am in the church office. Join us for a mini-retreat and complete your Lenten Prayer Life with reflections on the readings for the next day. Coffee and donuts after Mass. Call Barb at 636-947-3939 for information or a ride. As soon as they were able to enjoy the fruits of the Promised Land the manna ceased. Likewise, God’s blessings to us may change over the years but it is important to trust that God will always provide us with all that we need. We pray that we may put our complete trust in God to provide all that we need, just as God provided the Israelites with manna until they arrived in the Promised Land. Catholic Relief Services Collection This Weekend The St. Charles Borromeo Journey 1818 St. Charles Borromeo had been without a full time pastor since the departure of Fr. Dunand in 1814. During one of his visits to St. Charles, Bishop Dubourg called a meeting of the town’s leaders, both Catholic and Protestant, to discuss the construction of “a Seminary for female education on a large scale.” The woman Bishop Dubourg had in mind to run the girl’s school was Philippine Duchesne. However, he had not notified the 49-year-old nun of this plan until she arrived in St. Louis in August of 1818. With her had come four French-speaking nuns, 36-yearold Octavie Berthold, 26-year-old Eugenie Aude, 40-year-old Catherine Lamarre and 40-year-old Marguerite Manteau. In Paris Bishop Dubourg had promised Philippine that she would work with Native Americans in or near St. Louis. Nevertheless, when they reunited in St. Louis, he claimed that more good would come from the education of white children than of Indians, and insisted that the nuns move twenty miles west to St. Charles. Philippine fought his decision with every argument she could muster but the bishop refused, leaving them only the choice between St. Charles and Florissant. Philippine reluctantly chose St. Charles. In September 1818, Dubourg rode out from St. Louis beside the nun’s carriage over the dusty, hot roads to St. Charles. Accompanying them was Borromeo’s new pastor, Fr. Benedict Richard. He was one of Dubourg’s early Benedictine recruits and with whom the nuns had traveled north from Louisiana. His ministrations at St. Charles Borromeo began Sept. 1818 with his first baptism in the log church Fr. Richard also served as the nuns’ confessor and spiritual advisor, and on days of the week when attendance was likely to be low, he said Mass at their residency in Madame Duquette’s house which had been converted to accommodate the nuns. In return, the Sisters included among their chores cooking for their confessor/chaplain. By sending both Fr. Richard and the Sacred Heart community to St. Charles, Bishop Dubourg aimed to do more than just shore-up Catholicism in the town: he intended nothing less than the improvement of society through the education (both secular and religious) of the upper classes, reasoning this arrangement would eventually “trickle down” to the poor. Philippine contested this logic, not only because she longed to work with the poor but also St. Rose Philippine Duchense (mosaic in the New Cathedral) because it further thwarted her dream to live near the Indians. ...courtesy of St. Charles Borromeo:200 Years of Faith, by Jo Ann Brown This book is available in the church office for $5 Join us for a prayerful journey with Jesus on the road to Calvary, and our redemption. Where can I allow God to speak through me? ■ “I no longer deserve to be called your son,” says the prodigal, but his father sees things differently. Gracias a Dios, ¡somos cristianos!
