Pastors Corner April 24, 2016 Page 2 Fifth Sunday of Easter Choose Love and Service Today’s gospel is taken from the thirteenth chapter of the gospel of John. Earlier in this chapter, following the foot washing, Jesus asked his disciples: “Do you know what I have done for you? I have given you an example, that as I have done you also must do.” In today’s gospel Jesus speaks more on this topic. “As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Jesus gives us an example of love and asks us to follow his example. The Acts of the Apostles tells of how the early community of believers was known by the way they loved one another. Our reading today demonstrates how Paul and Barnabas witnessed to this love by proclaiming the good news (the gospel) in a variety of places. “They strengthened the spirits of the disciples and exhorted them to persevere in the faith.” Love isn’t always easy but we must persevere in the call to love, a call from Jesus himself. When we commit ourselves to love, when we make the choice for love, we will be helping make real “the new heavens and the new earth” John saw in his vision from the Book of Revelation (2nd reading). As John says in that reading, “God’s dwelling is with the human race.” During this Year of Mercy may others recognize God’s dwelling here among us because we choose to love and serve, following the example set by our Jesus our friend, brother and savior. Peace. Fr. Tom Cardinal McIntyre Fund for Charity – Next weekend we will have a second collection for the Cardinal McIntrye Fund for Charity. Since 1951, the Cardinal McIntrye Fund for Charity has offered hope for those in crisis situations throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Your contribution goes directly toward providing emergency needs for children, adults and families and provides one-time emergency help for food, utilities, medical, housing or funeral expenses. The goal of the Cardinal McIntrye Fund for Charity is service to the “neediest of the needy,” those for whom no other resources exist. Please be as generous as possible. Welcome -Father Hieu Tran is returning to Sacred Heart as our Pastor starting July 1st, 2016. Father Hieu was Associate Pastor here at Sacred Heart from 2008-2012. Please pray for all the priests moving and for all the parishes affected. More often He shows the next step and invites us to take it. The question to ask is not if God is calling you to be a religious or priest, but rather if God is calling you to enter formation. The commitment of entering the seminary then is akin, not to the commitment of getting married, but to that of dating. It is a commitment to discern intentionally what might grow into a life-long commitment. Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women The ACCW Cordially invites all women of the L.A.
