REQUIRED TEXTS:
¡Arriba! , 6th Edition; Zayas-Bazán, E., Bacon, S.M., Nibert, H.J. (2012). ISBN # 978020574037 (Note: Students MAY
NOT USE the Instructor’s edition under any circumstance)
On-line Component: MySpanishLab® (MSL). Must be purchased and registered under the enrolled student’s
name, NO EXECEPTIONS. Specific Course Code: CRSKL9M-4050918
COURSE STRUCTURE:
¡Arriba!, is a college Spanish textbook designed to encourage the development of communicative Proficiency
through an integrated approach to the teaching of all four language skills: listening, reading, writing, and
speaking. It also aims to foster cultural awareness of customs and traditions of the Spanish speaking world. In
this course we will discuss the concepts, principles and ideas outlined in chapters 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 of the
¡Arriba! textbook and correlating MSL activities. Students are expected to know and correctly use the material
covered in SPANISH 101 and SPANISH 102 as we continue our study of the Spanish language. While some
attention will be given to grammar explanations, more time will be devoted to the communicative aspect of
the language where students are expected to complete assignments/tasks in and outside of class both
individually and in partnerships/group work. Therefore, preparation for class is absolutely necessary since class
session will be devoted primarily for communicative language use.
ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Attendance at all class meetings is mandatory. The instructor will keep an attendance record. Valid excuses will
be accepted; however, only the instructor will determine if an excuse is valid. Beyond 3 unexcused absences,
the student’s final average will be lowered one level for each class missed. For example, a student whose
average is ‘B’ will have the grade lowered to ‘B-‘for 4 absences, to ‘C’ for 6, to ‘C-‘for 7, etc. Furthermore, if a
student is unable to attend class for any reason, it is his/her responsibility to find out what was missed by
checking with a classmate. Late assignments will not be accepted without a valid excuse as determined by
the instructor and will result in a deduction of points as determined by the instructor based on the individual
circumstances. Requests for Make-Up Exams will be considered as long as they are submitted in writing, within
one week of the scheduled exam, and are accompanied by written documentation that is deemed valid by
the instructor. In the event a student misses a scheduled exam for a valid reason, a make-up exam will be given
in a 95% audio-lingual format. There will be ABSOLUTELY NO MAKE-UPS for ORAL ASSIGNMENTS regardless of the
circumstance. Additionally, late arrival and/or early departure to/from class meetings without a valid excuse
(as determined by the instructor) will aversively affect the final grade. NO EXTRA CREDIT OR INCOMPLETES WILL
BE GIVEN FOR THIS COURSE. NO EXECEPTIONS.
ASSIGNMENTS/GRADED MATERIALS: The instructor reserves the right to modify assessments and point values.
Please refer to the course agenda for due dates.

EXPLANATION OF ASSIGMENTS/GRADED MATERIALS
MySpanishLab® (MSL) On-line Activities per chapter. These activities are assigned nightly (M-W-F) and are
intended to give students an opportunity to practice and internalize the grammatical and vocabulary
concepts from the textbook chapters as discussed in class. The activities will be assessed primarily based on
completion by the due date and time, grammatical and/or vocabulary accuracy and audio and reading
comprehension. Late submissions of MSL assignments will not be accepted without a valid excuse (please refer
to the Attendance Policy). Please note some of the assigned activities on MSL will have an audio component
which will be used as part of the audio-lingual comprehension assessment of all exams. Specifically, the audio
activities are intended to give students the opportunity to hear different accents and linguistic variations
among the Spanish-speaking world and, at the same time, assess the student’s comprehension of an audio
passage that directly correlates to the concepts, principles and ideas of the textbook chapters as discussed in
class.
Written Compositions (Composiciones escritas). A total of 4 written compositions will be assigned through the
semester. For each written composition the instructor will upload to D2L specific topics and guidelines (prompts)
which will relate to the ongoing or previous class lessons. The compositions will be assessed based on
vocabulary and grammar accuracy and that all of the items of the writing prompt are addressed.
The following guidelines apply to all 4 written compositions. Failure to follow these guidelines may adversely
affect your grade.
1.
Homework must be submitted to the instructor at the beginning of the class period on the due date. No
late work will be accepted without a valid excuse. (Please refer to the Attendance Policy).
2.
The homework must be typed and double-spaced in order to give the instructor the necessary space
for any needed corrections and/or feedback.
3.
All accents or other such marks must be included as these marks do have a significant importance, not
only grammatically, but in meaning. If you do not know how to type Spanish accent marks or other
Spanish linguistic marks, please consult with the instructor as soon as possible.
4.
Please follow the guidelines and specific directions of a particular assignment in regards to what needs
to be addressed, composition length, etc. Failure to follow specific guidelines for a particular written
assignment may result in a ‘0’ or a significant deduction of points. Please consult with the instructor if
you do not understand how to do a particular assignment.
5.
Students are expected to use the vocabulary and expressions learned in class, from the textbook
and/or from MSL when writing compositions. You should focus on the key grammar concepts and/or
vocabulary that is required for each composition (for example, if you are asked a series of questions in a
particular verb tense, you should answer those questions using that verb tense). Be careful with your use
of dictionaries because literal translations are often problematic; many times a word in English may
have many different translations and connotations in Spanish.
6.
TRANSLATION SOFTWARE IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED. In some cases, the use of translation software (goggle
translate, etc.) is considered a form of academic dishonesty as Internet sources are been copied,
plagiarized or used without citation. If a written composition looks, reads and feels like you used
translation software, directly translated the composition word for word from English to Spanish, or asked
someone else to write your composition or correct it for you, you may receive a ‘0’ for the assignment or
you may be asked to explain your use of some of the grammar and vocabulary, depending on the
circumstances. Please refer to the Academic Integrity statement.
Oral Assignments (Pruebas orales). A total of 2 oral assessments will be administered during the semester. They
will consist of students engaging in impromptu; relaxed oral exchanges with a classmate(s) that would mimic
authentic conversations in Spanish, therefore, reading of notes is strictly prohibited. The instructor will upload to
D2L specifics topics which directly correlate to the concepts, principles and ideas of the textbook chapters as
discussed in class that relates to the ongoing or previous class lessons. Although the oral assignments are
designed to be partner/group work, they will be assessed on the individual student ability to creatively use the
target language to get his/her message across. There will be ABSOLUTELY NO MAKE-UPS for ORAL ASSIGNMENTS
regardless of the circumstance.
Partial Exams (Exámenes parciales). There will be 4 partial examinations throughout the semester. Partial Exam
1 will focus on the review of the last concepts, principles and ideas from Chapter 10 of the ¡Arriba! textbook
and new concepts, principles and ideas from Chapter 11. Partial Exam 2 will focus on acquired previous
knowledge and new concepts, principles and ideas from Chapter 12. Partial Exam 3 will focus on acquired
previous knowledge and new concepts, principles and ideas from Chapter 13. Partial Exam 4 will focus on
acquired previous knowledge and new concepts, principles and ideas from Chapter 14. All exams will assess
the 4 skills of language learning and acquisition: reading, writing, listening and Hispanic cultures. In these
assessments students will be evaluated in their ability to:

Listen and answer comprehension questions regarding audio passages.




Read and answer comprehension questions regarding literary passages.
Choose correct vocabulary or grammatical form in the context of a sentence.
Read and answers questions pertinent to Hispanic culture.
Write a short paragraph (narration) in Spanish in complete sentences, or/and write answers to questions
in complete Spanish sentences.
Please be aware that all exams will be written entirely in Spanish.
The audio passage(s) in the exams will be the same ones that were assigned on MSL; however, the
comprehension questions will be different from the ones on the original assignment. The idea is to assess
listening comprehension in context, not memorization of an audio passage.
The instructor will upload to D2L Study Guides for the Partial Exams.
Oral Presentation & Interview (Presentación y entrevista oral): The oral presentation and interview assess a
student’s ability to speak and understand Spanish at the Intermediate-mid level of Proficiency as described by
ACTFL. It is conducted toward the end of the semester and involves an individual presentation and a short oneon-one interview with the instructor about the student’s presentation. In this assessment, students will be
evaluated based on:
o
o
o
o
content of information
comprehensibility of the speaker (fluency and pronunciation)
language accuracy (grammar and vocabulary)
language ability (understanding and responding to questions)
Topic and detailed guidelines for the Oral Presentation and Interview will be uploaded to D2L and discussed in
class closer to the due date.
Final Exam (Examen final): Although the Final Exam is focused on the last chapter it is a comprehensive
assessment of the concepts, principles and ideas discussed in class and assigned as homework throughout the
entire 16 weeks semester. It consists of a written examination that includes audio activities, literary readings,
vocabulary and grammar in context, cultural knowledge and a short written paragraph (narration) or/and
written answers to questions in complete Spanish sentences at the intermediate-mid level of Profiency as
described by ACTFL. A more detailed Study Guide and guidelines will be uploaded to D2L and discussed in
class closer to the Final Examination week. The final exam for this course has been scheduled by the Registrar’s
for Monday, May 9, from 8:00AM-10:30AM.
Participation (Participación). Participation is of extreme importance, especially in the Foreign Language
classroom. It is through active engagement in all language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) that
foreign language students learn and actually acquire the target language. After, all, that is the main objective
of this course! If a student does not attend class regularly, not only he/she will miss important concepts and
information, but an absent student cannot participate! Thus, it not only affects the learning and acquisition
process, but also their grade (please refer to the Attendance Policy). At the same time, attendance alone is
not participation! For students to earn a good participation grade, not only they should be in class, but must
come to class prepared, having studied the vocabulary and grammar concepts for the upcoming lessons,
worked on the assigned activities from the textbook, MSL, and/or any other outside assigned sources, and
actively participate and engage in class activities and discussions to the best of their ability. The participation
grade is awarded holistically, at the end of the semester, under the discretion of the instructor based on
students’ individual effort and performance.
Please refer to the Course Agenda for all assigned/graded work (TAREAS ASIGNADAS) and all due dates (PARA
ENTREGAR).
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY STATEMENT:
The College’s policy on academic integrity can be found in the latest version of the student handbook, and it
can be accessed through the college’s website. This policy will be strictly enforced, and as part of the
Westminster community, every student enrolled in this course is expected to be familiar with its provisions.
Note from the instructor: The instructor reserves the right to modify any/or all parts of this course syllabi. All
course communications (e.g., announcements, assignment guidelines, power points, e-mails, grade
notifications, etc.) will be done through the College’s Course Movement System, D2L. It is strongly advised that
students become familiar with D2L. Failure to do so (e.g. not receiving important information, etc.) will not be
considered a valid excuse.
