In our lottery- and sweepstakesobsessed culture, it is common to
ask ourselves or others what they
would do if they won. In today’s
first reading, Solomon certainly hits
the jackpot. What prize could be greater than having
God Almighty agree to give you whatever you ask
for?
Out of all the things he could have asked for,
Solomon chose to ask for understanding, and was
rewarded with it. We would do well to wonder what
we would ask for if God made us the same offer.
Actually God does make us the same offer each and
every day, by granting us another day of life, a bit of
the earth’s goods, some gift or ability, some call to
goodness, some portion of the divine will. Each of
these is a “prize.” We should stop and examine what
we are going to do with our prize: keep it or use it
selfishly, or put it at the service of the spread of the
gospel?

On Friday, August 1, 2014 at the

the Feast of St. Alphonsus
Liguori, the founder of the
Congregation of the Most Holy
Redeemer, commonly known as
the Redemptorists. Please join us.
The Shrine will be closed for the next few weeks
due to construction. Mass and confession will be
celebrated at the regularly scheduled times in
the upper church. For safety reasons, the
church will only be open a half an hour before
each Mass and will close immediately following
each Mass.

“Ask something of me and I will give it to
you.” The first reading tells us that this is
what God said to Solomon in a dream.
Solomon asks not for long life or riches. He
asks for an understanding heart. If God
appeared to you and said the same thing,
what would your response be? There is a
certain wisdom in placing this first reading
side by side with today’s Gospel. Once
again we hear parables about the kingdom
of heaven. Jesus used images of great
wealth—buried treasure, a pearl of great
price, and a large catch of fish—to describe
the kingdom. For the believer, the kingdom
of heaven is the greatest treasure, for to
inherit this treasure is to attain eternal life
with God. Again, back to the question posed
above. What would your response be if God
appeared like a genie and gave you one
wish? God does appear today, through the
living word, and asks us to continue to
formulate a response to the question. The
formulation of this response is part of what
it means to travel the journey of faith. What
is the treasure you seek this day? What is
your response to God’s question?

que quieras?

Salomón escogió pedir sabiduría y le fue concedida.
¿No sería bueno preguntarnos que pediríamos si
Dios nos hiciera esa oferta? En realidad Dios nos
hace esa misma oferta cada día, al darnos otro día
de vida, un poco de los bienes de la tierra, algún don
o talento, un llamado a la bondad, algo de la
voluntad divina. Cada uno de esos bienes es un
“premio”. Debemos detenernos y examinar lo que
vamos a hacer con nuestro premio: ¿guardarlo o
usarlo con egoísmo, o ponerlo al servicio de la
proclamación del Evangelio?

“Pídeme lo que quieras, y yo te lo daré”. La
primera lectura nos dice que esto fue lo que
Dios le dijo a Salomón en un sueño. Salomón
no pidió una larga vida ni riquezas, sino
sabiduría de corazón. Si Dios se te apareciera
y te dijera lo mismo, ¿qué le responderías?
Hay una cierta sabiduría al emparejar esta
primera lectura con el Evangelio de hoy. Una
vez más escuchamos parábolas acerca del
Reino de los cielos. Jesús usaba imágenes muy
ricas –un tesoro escondido, una perla muy
valiosa y una pesca bien abundante- para
describir el Reino. Para los creyentes el Reino
de los cielos es el tesoro más grande, ya que
heredar este Reino significa obtener la vida
eterna con Dios. Volvemos a la pregunta
propuesta anteriormente. ¿Qué le responderías
a Dios si se te apareciera como el genio de la
lámpara para concederte un deseo? Dios se
aparece hoy. Se aparece por medio de su
Palabra y nos pide que continuemos pensando
en nuestra respuesta a esa pregunta.
Formularnos esta respuesta es parte de lo que
significa andar por el camino de la fe. ¿Cuál es
el tesoro que buscas en este día? ¿Cuál es tu
respuesta a la pregunta de Dios?

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM: The Sacrament of Baptism is
administered monthly. Arrangements are made in advance at
the Rectory. Sponsors must provide proof of eligibility by a
letter from their respective pastors, and must have received the
Sacraments of Baptism, Communion, and Confirmation.
Parents attend a Pre-Jordan meeting prior to baptism, which is
arranged at a mutually convenient time.
SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE: Arrangements must be
made with a priest at least six months before the date of the
wedding. Pre-Cana instructions are required.
