Refrain Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made; For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (all bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Salida: Creo en Jesús Comunión: Mi Luz y Mi Salvación Page 6 Pastor’s Page Page 7 Bergoglio XI Jorge was appointed to the Argentine Jesuit Council as Provincial [leader] of all the Jesuits. He was aware that one of the temptations amongst the Jesuits was an “avant-gardism and elitism” as well as a fascination with abstract ideology that does not match reality. In contrast and as part of his strategy to increase the number of novices, he laid out a plan against prevailing ideologies of violence in favor of a simple approach that he identified as “people’s theology”. This would earn him among many Jesuits the insulting title of “arch-conservative” because he stood in opposition to Marxism. As part of his plan he worked with the Provincial council to sell off large pieces of property no longer needed by the community. The second prong of his plan was to deploy Jesuits to the periphery: specifically away from the center of power and privilege, and toward the barrios of the city where ministry among the poor was needed. To do this he created a new apostolate in the worker barrios surrounding the Colegio Maximo, which in turn brought new and vital vocations into the novitiate. By 1978 levels of new vocations topped 30 a year, as a direct result of his renewal of the process looking back to the earlier missionary days of the Society. However Bergoglio was no “restorationist” [harkening to all things from the past…] or as we might say today “traditionalist.” Nevertheless he was also the Provincial for the priest who was leader of the “Ultras” as that conservative movement became known, and he worked to calm them down. Of course they denounced him as a Marxist, but he was truly of neither extreme. He embodied “the service of faith, of which the promotion of justice is an absolute requirement.” IHM pray for us, Fr. Jubilee Year of Mercy: On today’s Jubilee for Those Sick and Suffering Disabilities, Jesus encounters a woman who is “spiritually ill.” She is thus “disabled” from participating in Israel’s worshiping community or polite society. Bathing Jesus’ feet with tears, drying them with unveiled hair, anointing them (Luke 7:38) risk Jesus’ becoming “unclean.” Yet his mercy welcomes even such inappropriate behavior as her sincere manifestation of love: “Your sins are forgiven. Go in peace” (7:48, 50). Go not just in “peace,” but in shalom, the all-enveloping, life-changing assurance of God’s mercy. She is anonymous, “known in the city” only as “a sinful women (7:37). The character with name and religious title, “Simon the Pharisee” (7:36, 40), judges her harshly, but himself not at all, and thus forfeits God’s mercy. This Jubilee Year of Mercy challenges us to self-examination. In which role do we most often cast ourselves, humble sinner or judgmental Pharisee? Jesus declares that only by an unfailing willingness to show mercy to fellow sinners can we hope to obtain mercy ourselves (see Misericordiae Vultus, 9). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
