SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT LENT— — THE TRANSFIGURATION OF JESUS MARCH 01, 2015 Mass Intentions Today’s Gospel Reflection 1st Reading: Gn 22:1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18 * Psalm 116:10, 15-19 * 2nd Reading: Rom 8:31b-34 * Gospel: Mk 9:2-10 LISTEN AND FOLLOW “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” And listen they did. From that moment on, Peter, James, and John were ardent followers, forsaking everything to follow in their Master’s footsteps. Like the psalmist crying, “O Lord, I am your servant,” the three disciples committed themselves to lives of incredible hardship and indescribable joy. After that day on the mountain, they never again wavered in their chosen vocation. Though our tests may not be as severe as Abraham’s and our peak experiences not as dramatic as the Transfiguration, we all face the daily challenges of walking “before the Lord in the land of the living.” As we follow our varied calls to love and serve, let’s be comforted by Paul’s reminder to the Romans: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. . “If God is for us, who can be against us?” Copyright © J. During Lent, we meditate on the great paschal mystery—the salvation God won for us sinners, by the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. PASTOR’S MESSAGE Lent is a time of preparation and self-sacrifice through prayer, penance, repentance, almsgiving, fasting and abstinence and self-denial or giving up worldly desires and activities. Prayer is our conversation with God. More time given to prayer draw us closer to the Lord. It is through prayer that we develop a closer, more intimate relationship with God. This relationship makes us so grateful for the blessings he has bestowed upon us that we become eager to give to those less fortunate than us. Fasting and almsgiving, without prayer, do not have much meaning; they are mere actions we do out of tradition. Fasting, which means partaking of only one full meal, is one of the most ancient actions linked to Lent. Fasting without changing our behavior is not pleasing to God (Isaiah 58:3-12). The goal of fasting is linked with prayer. The pangs of hunger remind us of our hunger for God. Prayer and fasting together brings us to what Lent is about—a deeper conversion. Abstinence from certain foods is also a biblical discipline. As a way of commemorating Christ’s Crucifixion on a Friday, we abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent and eat fish, which is a symbol of Christ. Almsgiving is a response that come through prayer and fasting. Almsgiving is an expression of our gratitude for all that God has given us. Through prayer and fasting we come to a deeper understanding that the needs of all are the responsibility of all in the Body of Christ. We are the Body of Christ! Penance. We must all turn from sin and make reparation to God for our sins. We must forgive and show love for one another just as we ask for God’s love and forgiveness. Let us pray to the Holy Spirit to grant us a heart to pray, a heart to share, a heart to serve, a heart to witness, and a heart to build bridges. Fr. Bernard Ranoa AMOUNT OF DONATION $____________ Page 3 SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT LENT— — THE TRANSFIGURATION OF JESUS MARCH 01, 2015 The mission of the Academy is to form young disciples to be spiritually, intellectually, and socially prepared to integrate gospel values for living a Catholic, Christian life in a secular world. We are committed to providing a Christian environment where students experience God through exploration of their lives and the wonders of His creation. The Academy envisions itself as a partner with parents; sharing the educational ministry of the Church. Blessings from St. Michael Academy to the St. Michael Parish Community! This past week, Sr. Eva Rodriguez, from the Missionary Childhood Association, visited our school. Sr. Eva builds bridges between our students and students in other parts of the world. After her stimulating talk, our students furthered their resolve to assist their missionary brothers and sisters. Last year, our St. Michael Academy students donated over $1,000.00 to the Missionary Childhood Association. I’m betting, they will top that amount this year. We do indeed pray, fast, and give alms. Lent is a growing time at SMA! Enrollment/registration is an ongoing process at St. Michael Academy. We are a Kindergarten through 8th Grade school. Call the office and schedule a tour of the Academy. Give us an opportunity to show you how the cost of your child’s Catholic education can fit into your budget. Call 619 470-4880, or e-mail Mrs. Lewis at [email protected]. Fr. Manny offers a $1000 discount to new families enrolling in the Academy. Page 4 Buena Algoso (619)470-2292 that take place on mountaintops. In the first we hear the story of how Abraham was put to the test. He is referred to as “our father in faith” precisely because he was willing to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, because the Lord God had commanded it. When Abraham stands ready kill Isaac, the Lord God intervenes, prevents the sacrifice, and blesses Abraham in abundance. In the second story, the only Son of God is transfigured on a mountaintop before the eyes of Peter, James, and John. As the sacred word is proclaimed, let us ask God to strengthen our own faith and lead us one day to share in the transfigured glory of Christ. From Saint Margaret Sunday Missal, copyright © J. S.
