KING OF THE UNIVERSE
"Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." The two
thieves that were crucified next to Jesus show two very different ways
of understanding who Jesus was. The first thief insulted Jesus, prodded
him, mocked him. He didn't believe that Jesus had any power whatsoever. Like the sneering crowds, he thought that it was a joke to label Jesus
as the "King of the Jews."
But the second thief, known in tradition as "the good thief," had a different perception. He understood that Jesus did in fact have power because,
as Jesus had told Pilate only hours earlier, his kingdom "is not of this
world." The good thief understood that the kingdom of God awaits those
who believe in the Lord. And when this man made that final act of faith
on his own cross, Jesus promised him, "Amen, I say to you, today you
will be with me in Paradise."
Today as we celebrate the solemnity of Christ the King, we are challenged to have as much faith as the good thief. We are challenged to
believe that Jesus is in fact the "King of the Universe," even when it
may not appear that way to those who stand by sneering. Jesus did not
choose to hop down off the cross and make everything cheery. Instead
he fulfilled his mission for an end result that was infinitely better than
simply saving himself and those two thieves; by dying on the cross, he
saved us all! So we too need to trust that just because Jesus doesn't always answer our prayers exactly how we want or expect, and just because we find ourselves carrying a cross from time to time, it does not
mean he isn't in charge! On the contrary, we need to trust, as the good
thief did, that Jesus' mission is to bring all of us to join him in his heavenly kingdom.

Is the concept of transubstantiation something new? When did this become a part of our Catholic history? Catholics have always believed
that Jesus Christ is truly present in the Eucharist, that the bread and wine
really become his body and blood. Jesus Himself said so at the Last
Supper, when He took bread and said, 'This is my body,' and wine and
said, 'This is my blood.' Catholics take Jesus at His word.
The earliest Christians did so, too. St. Paul made that clear in his first
letter to the Corinthians when he referred to the bread and wine of the
Eucharist as the 'body and blood of the Lord,' Jesus Christ. St. Ignatius
of Antioch in a letter to the Roman Church about 110 A.D., says, 'I desire the Bread of God, the heavenly Bread, the Bread of Life, which is
the flesh of Jesus Christ...; I wish the drink of God, namely His blood,
which is incorruptible love and eternal life.'
Over time, Catholic theologians have reflected on the doctrine of Jesus'
real presence in the Eucharist in order to clarify and deepen the Church's
understanding of it. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) was one of those
theologians. He was the first to use Aristotle's ideas about substance and
accidents to describe how the Eucharistic bread and wine become the
body and blood of Jesus Christ. His explanation was so clear and precise
that the word transubstantiation became part of the Church's official
teaching about the Eucharist.

once a month during one of the weekend Liturgies. Parents should contact
the parish at least two months prior to the desired month of celebration
and attend the preparation session. For dates and further details, please

If you are an adult Catholic desiring the Sacrament of Confirmation,
please contact Amanda Roberts (ext. 1113) at the parish office for general
information.
Interested in the Catholic Faith?
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults process offers the opportunity to
begin inquiry into the teachings and the practice of Catholicism. The
program offers varied paths for individuals who are unbaptized, those
baptized in another Christian faith tradition, or baptized Catholics who
have limited upbringing in the Church.
Questions are welcome, dialogue is encouraged, prayer and support are
integral, and very individual spiritual journeys are the norm.
Just curious? Just wondering? Really interested? A bit nervous? Married/
engaged to a Catholic and/or children in the faith and in need of information? Attending Mass (perhaps for years!) and feeling awkward in
stepping forward? Know a little and thinking it’s all a bit mysterious?

EveryWoman , a reading/study group, meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month starting promptly by 7pm. This Fall, we will be reading "Acts of the Apostles" (Part One) from the Church of the Holy Spirit
series from Threshold Bible Study. The immediate upcoming schedule is
as follows: September 21 (beginning with the Introduction to the Book),
October 6 (no meeting because this is CARITAS week), October 11(on a
Tuesday, an exception as we missed last week), October 19, November 2,
November 16, December 7.Please do join us; we have just ordered the

EDGE & LIFETEEN
This week at EDGE/LIFETEEN session we used the fun example of Spider-Man to talk about faithfulness and joy, tow more fruits of the Holy
Spirit. Our teens learned about the importance of remaining faithful to
Christ and their call to live as children of God. They also learned about
following Christ and trusting in Him will lead them to joy and help them
to get through any tough situation in life. Our next session will be held
on Monday, November 28. TOPIC: Incridible Hulk: Peace and SelfControl. Optional pizza dinner for $3.00 will take place from 6:00pm6:30pm.

The Shepherd Center of Chesterfield is a non profit interfaith organization
dedicated to helping seniors in the community remain independent in their
own homes. Those residents of Chesterfield 50 years of age or older can
receive transportation to medical appointments, for prescription pick up
and for grocery shopping. All transportation is arranged through the Shepherd Center and is provided by volunteers. If you need transportation or

Volunteers are needed for various Social Ministries at St. Augustine.

Dear Parishioners,
The Women’s Guild would like to thank each and every one of you who
made our Christmas Bazaar such a SUCCESS!! From the workers to the
contributors to the Patrons, WE THANK YOU. We love and appreciate
each and everyone of you. Mike, your diligence, muscle, and patience
was especially needed and appreciated.
Please join us on Sunday, November 20th from 10 - 11am for a closing
session on the Year of Mercy led by Father Wayne Ball. Come to the
Poor Box Breakfast in the Hall at 9:30am to nourish your body and
stay to nourish your soul.
International Christian Artist and Speaker Andrea
Andrea is coming to St. Augustine! Andrea Andrea
has recorded over 100 shows for Spanish Disney, has
brought her music to the USA, México, Perú, Australia, Spain and Rome where she sang on the Vatican
Radio. In 2016 she was named Woman of the Year by
the League of United Latin American Citizen for her
artistic work and serving as a role model to Hispanic Youth. She brings
the good news across the globe through her TV and radio show on
ESNE (elsembradorministries.com (the sower’s ministries for the New
Evangelization) and on December 2-4 she will be sharing both her music and message to encourage the children, teens, and adults of our parish to grow stronger in our discipleship. The program schedule is as
follows: Friday, December 2, 6-9pm program for teens (13-17), Saturday, December 3, 1-5 program for children ages k-5 (parents should
plan on staying with their children), and Saturday December 3, 7-9pm
with adults. Programs for children and teens are bilingual and the cost is
$5 per child/teen; the adult program will be in Spanish during Saturday’s Carismatic assembly.
We are in need of Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors and Altar Servers for
all masses. If you can assist with any of the masses in any way, please
email Deacon Al at [email protected]. We will contact you within
a week and train you at your convenience on a Sunday or Saturday
when you normally attend mass. Training is quick and simple. Your
participation in this capacity will be a great help.
Assistance at Mass:
As we begin a new liturgical year in a few weeks, you may be interested
in assisting at our weekend liturgy in some way. We are always in need
of altar servers, lectors, ministers of the Eucharist, ushers or mass coordinators. If you would like more information or are interested in assisting in any way, please contact the office or Deacon Al. You will be
notified within two weeks to schedule a short period of training.

Are you retired? Do you have any free time? We are looking for a volunteer person who can assist and work side-side with the staff maintenance person on a part-time basis. Flexible schedule.
Volunteer Hall Monitor
Can you spare a few hours in the evening? We are looking for a volunteer hall monitors who can greet, monitor the halls, answer questions,
lock and secure the facility in the evenings. You are not required to do
every night but if you can spare a couple of nights that can work for you
on a regular basis, we need you.
Volunteer Office help
We are looking for volunteer office help during the day. If you can
spare a few hours in the week to assist staff in the office on various task
from filing, typing, answering calls, placing calls, copying, or stuffing
bulletins we can use your help.
Table/chair Set up Person
Can you use some spare cash? We are in need of some people for table
and chair setup on an as need basis. This position pays $10/hour.

de los ritos de iniciación Cristiana de adultos: el Rito para Aceptación en el
Catecumenado y el Rito de Bienvenida (para aquellos adultos bautizados
que se están preparando para completar sus sacramentos de iniciación). Los
candidatos han estado aprendiendo sobre el Señor Jesucristo y cómo nosotros los Católicos vivimos la vida cristiana. Han aprendido de nosotros, han
comenzado a vivir una vida de gracia y se han comenzado a dejar guiar por
la gracia del Espíritu Santo que los trajo a este punto en su camino de fe.
Los no bautizados se encuentran listos para comenzar formalmente una
relación con el Señor Jesucristo y su Iglesia que continuará toda su vida y
nosotros tenemos el privilegio de abrazarlos en la fe durante esta etapa en

convirtió en parte de nuestra historia católica? Los católicos siempre han creído que Jesucristo está realmente presente en la Eucaristía, que el pan y el vino realmente se convierten en su cuerpo y
sangre. Jesús mismo lo dijo en la Última Cena, cuando tomó pan y
dijo: "Este es mi cuerpo", y tomó el vino y dijo: "Esta es mi sangre". Los católicos toman a Jesús en Su palabra.
Los primeros cristianos también lo hicieron. San Pablo lo dejó claro
en su primera carta a los Corintios cuando se refirió al pan y al vino
de la Eucaristía como "el cuerpo y la sangre del
Señor", Jesucristo. San Ignacio de Antioquía, en una carta a la Iglesia romana
alrededor del año 110 de nuestra era, dice: 'Deseo el pan de Dios, el
pan celestial, el pan de vida, que es la carne de Jesucristo ...; Deseo
la bebida de Dios, es decir Su sangre, que es el amor incorruptible y
la vida eterna.
Con el tiempo, los teólogos católicos han reflexionado sobre la doctrina de la presencia real de Jesús en la Eucaristía para aclarar y
profundizar la comprensión de la Iglesia por ella. Tomás de Aquino
(1225-1274) fue uno de esos teólogos. Fue el primero en usar las
ideas de Aristóteles sobre la sustancia y los accidentes para describir cómo el pan y el vino eucarístico se convierten en el cuerpo
y la sangre de Jesucristo. Su explicación fue tan clara y precisa que
la palabra transubstanciación pasó a formar parte de la enseñanza
oficial de la Iglesia sobre la Eucaristía.

(elsembradorministries.com para la Nueva Evangelización) y del 2 al 4
de diciembre, traerá su música y mensaje aquí para compartirlo con los
niños, jóvenes, y adultos. Compartirá su programa Pasos del Católico
Dinámico el viernes 2 de 6-9pm con los jóvenes (13-17), el sábado 3
de diciembre de 1-5pm con los niños de K-5 grado (padres deben
acompañar a sus hijos), y el Sábado 3 de diciembre de 7-9pm con los
adultos, durante la asamblea Carismática. El programa para los niños y
jóvenes es bilingüe y el costo es $5; el programa para los adultos en
Español y se pide una ofrenda.

Esta posición es a tiempo parcial (24 horas / semana) responsable del
mantenimiento y administración general de los edificios de la parroquia, terrenos y rectoría. Ayudar con la coordinación de las ofertas y
la contratación de mantenimiento, mejoras en la propiedad, realizar
mantenimiento rutinario y mantener los suministros de limpieza, iluminación y desechables. Mantener la seguridad adecuada de la propiedad y las instalaciones. Proporcionar apoyo técnico de rutina para las
operaciones y la creación de eventos. Trabajar con comités voluntarios

ENCUENTRE LA ALEGRÍA DEL EVANGELIO
Año 3: Equipando la Parroquia
REFLEXIONES
NUESTRO SEÑOR JESUCRISTO, REY DEL UNIVERSO
Jesús fue crucificado entre dos ladrones y uno de ellos conocido
en la religiosidad popular como el buen ladrón reconoce en el
Señor su reino y que él es Rey. Él sabe que es un pecador pero
que Jesús es inocente y todos sabemos la forma tan rápida, inmediata, momentánea que se gana el paraíso. "'Señor, cuando
llegues a tu Reino, acuérdate de mí'. Jesús le respondió: 'Yo te
aseguro que hoy estarás conmigo en el paraíso'" (Lc 23, 42).
Para nuestro aprendizaje catequético de este domingo es bueno
saber que el personaje central de todo la historia de la salvación
es Jesús, el cual hoy celebramos con alegría su fiesta de Cristo
Rey. Marcamos el final. El próximo domingo daremos comienzo
al principio, al Adviento, a lo nuevo de otro año litúrgico.
La fiesta de Cristo Rey fue instaurada por el Papa Pío XI el 11 de
diciembre de 1925. El papa quiso motivar a los católicos a
reconocer públicamente que el Rey de Reyes universal es Cristo
Rey. Ahora, el Papa Francisco nos enseña que "Jesús no es un
rey al estilo de este mundo: para Él reinar no es mandar, sino
obedecer al Padre, entregarse a Él, para que se cumpla su designio de amor y de salvación" (homilía, el 23 de noviembre de
2014). Para los hispanos mexicanos en los Estados Unidos, esta
solemnidad tiene una connotación muy especial, ya que muchos
de nuestros sacerdotes y laicos incluido un niño José Luis
Sánchez del Río dieron la vida por defender su fe. Sus últimas
palabras fueron ¡Viva Cristo Rey y Santa María de Guadalupe!
(La fecha de su canonización para el Beato José Sánchez del Río
será 16 de octubre de 2016).
