The Readings and their Message
Amos 6:1A, 4-7
The mention of Zion and Samaria and
the leaders resting on their laurels as
favorite nations brings a warning to
Judah and Israel, the kingdoms of the
North and the South. Usually Amos
does not address Judah, but that
doesn’t mean he should omit a mention of the holy mountain of
Judah. The accusation against the leaders is that, with their lives
of luxury and complacency, they are preparing for defeat at the
hands of the Assyrians, but they don’t consider what they could
be doing to avoid defeat. In the immediate political context, Israel
is enjoying a prosperous time. Its unpleasant neighbor to the
North, Syria, with its capital in Damascus, who had had intentions
of invading Israel, has been punished by Assyria. This allowed
Israel to enjoy a period of relative peace and tranquility. It has
recovered lost lands and conquered new ones, and enjoys new
economic prosperity; but under all this there is an environment of
impoverishment and neglect of the poor that clashes against the
abundance of a few. Archeological findings prove the existence of
the ivory houses mentioned here. The book of Amos refers to
these riches and to the food, drink and women enjoyed by the
rich, who don’t seem to have a notion that their actions are
leading to serious political problems.
1 Timothy 6:11-16
The quest for wealth vitiates the credibility of the gospel’s
message. It is why Paul always wants to show his lack of interest
in material possessions and his effort to earn his keep without
being a burden to anyone or using privileges for his apostolic
work. Perhaps with Paul’s example known, the author of the letter
wants to reinforce his exhortations to Timothy, reminding him of
the tradition of realism and common sense offered in biblical
wisdom regarding poverty and wealth.
Luke 16:19-31
This parable has the mark of a legend that the evangelist improves
upon, grows, and puts in the service of his invitation toward
repentance. He is also interested in the failures of the descendants
of Abraham, who had everything in their favor to listen to Moses
and the prophets and yet did not. In the meantime, the poor
beggar, Lazarus, is the true son of Abraham. Luke later
emphasizes the topic of true kinship in the story of Zacchaeus,
with the story of the woman hunched over for many years, and
with all the stories of people who were rejected by those who felt
very secure in their religiosity or their money.
Jubilee for Catechists
Amos castigates religious people who,
“comfortably complacent” (6:1, 5),
ignore the unfolding collapse of culture,
nation, religion (6:6). In Jesus’ parable,
such complacency becomes the rich
man’s undoing. He neither hurt nor harmed Lazarus, neither
denied him leftovers nor ordered him removed. That is Jesus’
devastating point. The rich man did nothing wrong to Lazarus; he
just did nothing at all good for him. Only in death, separated by
“a great chasm” (Luke 16:26), could the rich man finally see
Lazarus, whom he had failed to see in life, right before his eyes.
Like the rich man’s “five brothers still in my father’s
house” (16:27–28), we who are alive in the Church still have time
to see that same Someone, Jesus, lying neglected right at our
door—and time to do something. Who, specifically, concretely,
practically, is Lazarus in my life? What can I do for that Jesus-inthe-flesh during this Jubilee Year of Mercy?

too scared to report abuse, and the adults around
him or her do not understand the signs of abuse
or too afraid to speak up. Bystanders have more
power than they know, especially when it comes
to reporting abuse and protecting children.
Young adults don’t always have the opportunity or the courage
to speak up for themselves, and the adults around them have a

Jubileo para los catequistas
Amos castiga a personas religiosas
“confiadas” (6:1, 5) que ignoran la caída
de la cultura, de la nación, de la religión
(6:6). En la parábola de Jesús esa
confianza es la perdición del hombre rico. Él no lastima o
perjudica a Lázaro, tampoco le niega las sobras ni pide que lo
quiten de la entrada de su casa. Y ese es el punto principal que
Jesús menciona. El hombre rico no hizo ningún mal a Lázaro,
pero tampoco hizo algo bueno por Lázaro. Solo después de la
muerte, separados por “un abismo inmenso” (Lucas 16:26),
pudo el hombre rico ver a Lázaro, a quien no se atrevió a verlo
mientras vivió, justo ante sus ojos. Así como los cinco
hermanos que quedaban en la casa del hombre rico (16:27–28),
nosotros los que vivimos en la Iglesia todavía tenemos tiempo
para ver a ese alguien, a Jesús que está a la entrada de nuestra
puerta y que es tiempo para hacer algo. ¿Quién, practica,
concreta y específicamente es Lázaro en mi vida? ¿Qué puedo
hacer por ese Jesús de carne y hueso durante este Año Jubilar
de la Misericordia?
Mañana, Lunes 26 de Septiembre a las

para las familias y amigos de los
encarcelados aquí en San Antonio. A través
de la oración y compartimiento, nos abrimos
a la sanación de Dios para nosotros y para
nuestros seres queridos en prisión. Habrá

Las lecturas y su mensaje
Amós 6:1A, 4-7
La mención de Sión y de Samaria y de
los líderes dormidos en sus laureles
como nación favorita, nos anuncia una
advertencia a Judá e Israel, los reinos
del norte y del sur. Normalmente Amós
no se dirige a Judá, pero eso no significa que se deba omitir la
mención del santo monte de Judá. La acusación contra los
líderes es que, con su vida de lujo y complacencia, se están
preparando para la derrota a manos asirias, pero no piensan en lo
que pueden hacer para evitar la derrota. En el contexto político
inmediato, Israel está pasando por un buen momento. Su
desagradable vecino del norte, Siria, con su capital Damasco,
que había tenido pretensiones de invasión de Israel, ha sido
castigado por Asiria. Esto ha permitido a Israel gozar de un
período de relativa paz y tranquilidad. Ha recuperado territorios
perdidos y conquistado otros nuevos; goza de prosperidad
económica; pero debajo de ellos hay un ambiente de
empobrecimiento y desprecio del pobre que choca con el
bienestar y la abundancia de unos pocos. Descubrimientos
arqueológicos dan prueba de las casas de marfil de las que se
hablan. El libro de Amós se refiere a estas riquezas y a la
comida, bebida y mujeres a las que se abandonan los ricos, que
parecen no tener idea de que sus acciones están preparando
graves problemas políticos.
1 Timoteo 6:11-16
El afán de lucro vicia la credibilidad del mensaje evangélico. Por
algo Pablo quiso siempre mostrar su desinterés por los bienes
materiales y su empeño por ganarse el pan con el sudor de su
frente, sin ser gravoso a nadie ni usar privilegios para su trabajo
apostólico. Quizá dando por conocido el ejemplo de Pablo, el
autor de la carta quiere reforzar sus exhortaciones a Timoteo
recordándole la tradición de realismo y sentido común que
ofrece la sabiduría bíblica sobre la pobreza y la riqueza.
Lucas 16:19-31
Esta parábola lleva la marca de una leyenda que el evangelista
mejora y aumenta, y pone al servicio de su invitación al
arrepentimiento. Está también interesado en los fallos de la
descendencia de Abraham, que tenían todas las ventajas para
escuchar a Moisés y a los profetas y no lo hacen. Mientras tanto,
el pobre mendigo, Lázaro, es el verdadero hijo de Abraham.
Lucas enfatiza el tema de la verdadera filiación más tarde con la
historia de Zaqueo, con la de la mujer que había estado inclinada
durante tantos años y con todas las historias de gente rechazada
frente a los que se creen muy seguros en su religiosidad o en su
dinero.
