EAST HIGH SCHOOL – A SCHOOL WITH PURPOSE
Public schools are required to go through a process of
Accreditation with the Utah State Board of Education every
few years. Our last Accreditation visit was in the spring of
2009. The state officials, school administrators, and teachers
who conducted our assessment were impressed by our focus on
student achievement and professional conduct, and gave us the
highest “pass rate” that a school can earn.
We began to prepare for that visit in the fall of 2007 with a
commitment to the ideal of Professional Learning Communities
(PLCs) as a way of organizing our work and setting the course
for improvement, which was focused on student success. We
use our professional development days to deal with the wide
assortment of challenges we’re facing at East High in light of
changing demographics, burgeoning technology, and other 21st
century developments. We are guided by the philosophy that
we want to use best practices to develop strategies that meet the
varying learning styles of our students.
The model of working in PLCs has guided our professional
development in the years since 2007, and we continue to meet
in these small learning groups during the Late Starts that the
district has scheduled for us this year. Please be assured that we
use our time well, and that our first priority is to serve the needs
of our students. The illustration below is a graphic illustration
of the overarching question on which we focus our attention:

This year we are going through the process of Accreditation
again and we appreciate the community’s support as we work
to make sure that each student at East High School gets the
individual support needed to be successful.

The PTSA is off to a busy start to the year. We’d like to extend
a BIG “Thank You” to the following people: the administration
and PTSA parent volunteers for a successful multi school
stomp, Maureen Wilkinson for the Leopard Loop - with the
Hockey club the winning the award for “best display”. Last, but
not least, thanks to Melanie and Mark Robbins for the amazing
Parent/Teacher conference snacks for the faculty and staff...it
was a seriously incredible spread!

AVID BINDERS: HOW &WHY
East has implemented a school wide AVID program helping to
ensure that all students are college and career ready. AVID
stands for Advancement via Individual Determination. AVID
focuses on 5 main academic skills: writing, inquiry, reading,
organization, and collaboration (WICOR). As a part of our
school wide AVID focus, every 9th and 10th grade student at
East High School will receive the tools needed to be successful
in school:

Day Planner
Organization is an important skill in school, career, and other
aspects of daily life. The AVID binder is an organizational tool
to help students maintain notes, school work, and class
materials. Students with their AVID binder will be prepared for
every class. AVID binders are also an excellent resource for
parents. Parents can easily access their student’s AVID binder
and day planner to ensure all expected school work is complete.
9th and 10th grade students are expected to maintain a binder,
which has been provided to them, along with all of the
necessary items needed. Students are expected to keep it
organized using the AVID methods they are taught. Divider
tabs will be structured as MESSE (Math, English, Science,
Social Studies, and Electives). Students will be assessed on
organization and preparation of all their materials. The binder
will be evaluated weekly and taken as an assessment
grade. Students should spend no more than 15 minutes each day
organizing and completing their notes. It should be a red flag to
parents if their student spends two or more hours the night
before a binder check.
AVID OPPORTUNITY
What is AVID? AVID at East WORKS!!! The AVID class of
2015 will be the 5th AVID graduating class. AVID grads have
earned over $1 MILLION Dollars in Scholarships over the past
4 years. If you work hard, want to go to college and commit to
your success - YOU DESERVE TO BE IN AVID!
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is middle
through post-secondary college readiness system, designed to
increase school-wide learning and student performance. AVID
focuses on the least served students in the “academic middle,”
students who are motivated and exhibit good citizenship but
may not have benefited from gifted and talented programs.
AVID students are enrolled in an AVID Elective Class where
they work to improve their note-taking, organization, studyskills and collaborative technique. An AVID student is
additionally enrolled in at least one Honors or Advanced
Placement Class. AVID students are required to apply to one
four-year college and are expected to maintain a minimum of a
“B-” grade point average.

COUNSELING CENTER
ACT
The next ACT exam will be held on Saturday, October 25,
2013. Bring your admittance paper, picture ID, pencils, and
approved calculator. No cell phones or pagers are allowed.

SENIOR SEOP’S
We have begun senior CCR’s (Career & College Readiness
Plan – formally known as SEOP’s). A letter will be sent home
with information regarding your student’s appointment. If that
appointment doesn’t fit your schedule, please call (801-5842923) the counseling center to re-schedule.
PSAT
The PSAT will be given at East High on Wednesday, Oct. 15,
2014 at 7:45 am in the ballroom. This is a good test to take for
any student who is serious about attending a four year college
or university. The score is not part of a student’s official high
school record and there is valuable feed-back concerning the
student’s academic strengths and weaknesses.
The cost is $15.00 to be paid in advance to the school treasurer.
We also have 11 fee waivers for students who are on
free/reduced lunch. We will register the first 85 students on a
first come, first served basis starting on Oct. 6.
The test is primarily targeted for juniors, but we will register
interested sophomores beginning on Oct. 9th.
AFTER-SCHOOL CREDIT RECOVERY AND NEW
CREDIT
After school credit recovery and new credit has begun. It is in
room B-215. You MUST bring with you a referral from your
counselor, and receipt from the treasurer. The fee is $15.00/qtr.
credit for credit recovery, and $25.00/qtr. credit for new credit
courses. New credit courses are: Financial Literacy, Health,
Computer Tech., and P.E. This program will be held on
Monday, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in Room B215 from 2:45 pm - 3:45 pm. If you have any questions, please

END OF THE 1ST QUARTER LEVEL CHANGES
If a student wants a level change or the teacher is requesting a
level change, please come see the counselors on Oct. 30th, Oct.
31st, Nov. 3rd or Nov. 4th. In order for the counselor to make the
level change, students MUST HAVE A NOTE FROM THE
TEACHER.
COLLEGE APPLICATION EVENT:
November 12th & 13th, 2014
Students will have the opportunity to come to the computer lab
and work on completing college applications with counselors
and college admission representatives.
YOUTH PROTECTION PARENT SEMINAR
Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at Clayton Middle School at 6:00
pm will be the last of several Youth Protection Parent
Seminars.

Leadership Camp application is now in progress for tenth
grade students with leadership and community service
experience. The camp will be in Aspen Grove, Utah, May 7-9.
To apply, submit an essay, 100 words or less; "Please describe
the most rewarding and challenging aspects of being a leader in
your school and community", due to Alisa Kearl, Scholarship
Coordinator, by October 24. East High counselors will select
one student through an interview process.
Seniors and graduating students, applications are now
available for the Sons of Utah Pioneers Scholarship. This
scholarship is for students who demonstrate the same values of
Utah pioneers; faith in God, devotion to family, loyalty to
church and country, hard work, service to others, personal
integrity, determination to succeed, and overcoming adversity.

COLLEGE 101 WEEK
East High is presenting College 101 Week in honor of our
101st Anniversary!
Tuesday, October 21
Annual In-state College Tour: 8:00 am-10:30 am. Seniors
and graduating juniors will be excused from first period to the
auditorium for an introductory assembly, and then students are
required to meet with representatives of three in-state colleges
of their choice.
College and Scholarship Information Night: 6:00 pm-8:00
pm. For students of all grades and their parents. Choose three
thirty minute break-out sessions including; Writing Effective
College Entrance and Scholarship Essays, U of U Honors
College Information, Expanding Your Options-Applying for
Out of State Colleges, Searching for Scholarships, Como
Encontrar Becas, College for First Generation Students, and
AVID Information.

NEWS FROM THE LIBRARY AND THE
COMPUTER LAB!
Student E-mail Accounts Now Available
The Salt Lake City School District (SLCSD) has created a
student Outlook E-mail account for each SLCSD student to
help with student-teacher communication, send reminders of
activities, and facilitate students’ receiving and completing
homework assignments. This account enables students to use
the Microsoft Office 365 system to complete assignments away
from school and then print their assignments at school. Many
commercial e-mail systems like Gmail, Hotmail, Dropbox, etc.
change communication parameters in such a way that it is
impossible for students to download files at school. The
SLCSD student E-mail account does not have this restriction;
therefore, it is important to have for school assignments.
As a bonus to activating their E-mail account, students are able
to download a free copy of the Microsoft Office 365 products
for use on multiple computers. To access the E-mail and Office
365 account at home (which includes Windows software and
access to the Cloud), the student navigates to this web site:
https://login.microsoftonline.com
The User Name format is:
first name. (first initial of last name)(last three numbers of
student #) @slcstudents.org
For example:
Student Name: John Smith
Student ID: 123456
User Name: [email protected]
The Password is the same one that your student uses to login
to the school’s computers.
If your student is not able to log onto the SLCSD student e-mail
account, it is because the choice was made to opt-out of this
access at the time of registration. If you would like to take
advantage of this opportunity, your student may pick up a
permission form in the Library or Computer Lab for you to sign
and he/she return to the Library.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT NEWS
The Student Government had a great first month of school with
the success of an outstanding Hello week that got the student
body excited for the upcoming school year. Hello Week
included a variety of lunch time activities that started with otter
pop day, then Root Beer pong, then the annual orange hold and
ended with a great first assembly. Upcoming in the Student
Government world is Homecoming week which is from the 29th
of September through 4th of October which is the Homecoming
Dance. Student Government has pre-planned Homecoming
week’s lunch-time activities and the Homecoming assembly
which this year will be a pep-rally. Student Body should be
excited for the week and make sure to vote for Homecoming
Royalty, nominations begin Monday of next week.
MIX IT UP AT LUNCH DAY
KICKING IT WITH GIRL’S SOCCER
This year at East High School we are focusing on diversity and
uniting East High as one. On October 28th our school along
with many others nationally will participate in "Mix It Up At
Lunch Day". This program encourages students to interact and
eat lunch with other students they may not know. We hope
students will embrace this opportunity to "mix it up" and
branch out to the rest of the school.
Girls soccer if off to a great start and we are in the running for a
Region title. This year captains are Brooke Boren, Erin
Gaykowski, Ellie Jensen, and Isabel Austin. This year we were
able to have enough players to field 3 teams, sophomore, JV,
and varsity, and all 3 are doing very well. We appreciate the
support of administration and the awesome East student body
and look forward to forthcoming games and State playoffs.

BASKETBALL
BABYFACES IN THE YEARBOOK
Parents- want to give your Senior a special shout-out in the
yearbook? Buy a Baby-Ad for the Yearbook! They are only
$35 and a great way to recognize and congratulate your student
for all their hard work and success throughout the last four
years in high school. Ads include a baby photo of the senior,
and a short message of congratulations in 25 words or less.
Students- want to make those friendships last forever? Purchase
a Friend-to-Friend ad to be featured in the yearbook! The 1/15
page ads with one photo and 25 words or less are $35. Have a
group of three or more friends? Purchase 1/3 page ads for $200
with up to 6 pictures and 100 words. They are a fun way to
commemorate the people that made your high school
experience the most fun.
Also, Sports Teams or Clubs can purchase 1/3 page Ads for
their athletes or club members! These Ads are a great way to
recognize graduating athletes for their hard work and
dedication on and off the field, and even Club Presidencies for
their commitment and success.
Order forms will be on the East High website and in the front
office starting October 1st. The deadline to purchase the ads is
October 31st.
YOUNG LAWYERS TOURNAMENT
East High Debate will be hosting the Young Lawyers
Tournament co-sponsored by the Litigation Division and the
Young Lawyers of the Utah State Bar Association. It will be
held October 3-4, 2014.
We will be offering five preliminary rounds with novice and
open division in 3 events: Policy, LD and public
forum. Varsity debaters who have earned at least 150 NFL
points in policy or LD and are juniors or seniors may judge
novice division in policy or LD but only adults are to judge PF.
Policy will use the 2014-2015 topic, and novice will follow
Utah Debate Coaches guidelines for policy. Novice LD will use
the following topic 'Civil disobedience in a democracy
is morally justified.' Public Forum will use the October topic.
The Little Leopards Cheer Clinic will be October 68th. This clinic is for ages 4 through 12 and is a
great opportunity to learn, make friends,
perform, and have fun! Participants will learn
cheers and a dance routine to perform during
halftime of the East vs. Clearfield football game
on Friday, October 10 at 7pm. Registration will
be Oct 6 from 3:30-4 in the East High Commons.
Cost is $25.00. Get your sign-up sheet in the Main Office
today!
Basketball tryouts will be held NOV 10th. Get in the gym and
get yourself ready! There will be a meeting in October for all
parents and boys that want to try out. Please look for more
information on the date and time of the meeting on the East
Basketball page of the school website.
We are looking for enthusiastic people that can have a positive
impact on the young men in our basketball program. If you are
interested in being a volunteer coach this year or have other
skills that might benefit the program, contact Coach Lowe

LACROSSE
The Boys’ Lacrosse team is providing itself to be one of the
best Division 2 teams in the State as they are playing a number
of scrimmages this fall. They are dominating other Division 2
opponents and having very close games against Division 1
competition. The team has grown in numbers by twenty-five
percent with about 65 players on the team and the future is very
bright for East Boys’ Lacrosse.
There are also efforts to try to get an East Women’s Lacrosse
team going again. This is a fantastic chance for East girls to be
on a high school level sports team, where no experience is
necessary. Interested East girls should contact Emma Gleave
about how to get on the East team.
EAST HOCKEY
Hockey is back at East with a vengeance! After a short hiatus,
the Leopards ended their comeback summer season 10-3! East
Hockey was one of the first high school hockey teams in the
state and has a long tradition of playoff and State
Championship success.
The team is made up of veteran hockey players, beginners and
everything in between. If you are interested in playing, please

Las escuelas públicas están obligadas a pasar por un proceso de
acreditación con la Junta de Educación del Estado de Utah cada
pocos años. La última Acreditación visita fue en la primavera
de 2009. Los funcionarios del estado, los administradores de la
escuela, y los maestros, que realizaron la evaluación estaban

La escuela de East ha implementado un programa AVID ayuda

La organización es una habilidad importante en la escuela, las

tres anillas y de tres pulgadas es una herramienta de
organización para ayudar a los estudiantes mantener notas, las
tareas escolares y materiales de clase. Los estudiantes con sus
ávidos binder se prepararán para cada clase. AVID carpetas
también son un recurso excelente para los padres. Los padres
pueden acceder fácilmente a su estudiante ávido de binder y día
planificador para asegurar que toda escuela espera finalizar los
trabajos. 9O y 10o grado se espera que los estudiantes
mantengan un clasificador, que ha sido presentado a ellos, junto
con todos los elementos necesarios. Se espera que los

¿Qué es AVID? ¡¡¡AVID en la escuela de East funciona!!! El
AVID clase de 2015 será el 5o AVID regresados. AVID han
ganado más de 1 millón de dólares en becas durante los últimos

SENIOR de SEOP
Hemos comenzado los CCR (Carrera y Plan de preparación
universitaria, formalmente conocido como SEOP's ). Se

PSAT
El PSAT se darán el miércoles, 15 oct, 2014 en 7:45 en el salón
de baile. Esta es una buena prueba que se debe tomar para
cualquier estudiante que se toma en serio el asistir a la
Universidad y tener una carrera. La puntuación no será nota
oficial del registro pero es un valioso feed-back sobre el
académico fortalezas y debilidades.
El costo es de $15.00 que se pagan por adelantado a la escuela
tesorero. También tenemos 11 exenciones de las tasas para los

mensaje felicitándole en 25 palabras o menos.
Estudiantes, ¿desean hacer las amistades que duran para
siempre? Compraa un amigo-a-amigo ad en el anuario. El 1/15
página anuncios con una foto y 25 palabras o menos 35
dólares. Un grupo de tres o más amigos? Página 1/3 anuncios
Compra por $200 con un máximo de 6 fotografías y 100
palabras. Son una forma divertida de conmemorar la gente
que hizo la escuela la más divertida.

regreso las actividades que este año será un pep rally. Cuerpo

Política se utilice el período 2014-2015 tema novatos y Utah
Debate seguirá las directrices para los entrenadores. LD Novato
usar el siguiente tema: "desobediencia civil en una democracia
es moralmente justificada." Foro Público se utilice el octubre
tema.

El fútbol femenino dio un buen comienzo y estamos en la
carrera por una región título. Este año los capitanes son
Brooke Boren, Erin Gaykowski, Ellie Jensen, e Isabel Austin.
Este año tuvimos la oportunidad de tener suficientes
jugadores de campo 3 equipos, estudiante de segundo año,
EP, y amarillo, y los 3 son muy buenos. Agradecemos el apoyo
de la administración y de los increíbles este cuerpo de
estudiantes y esperamos en los próximos juegos y finales del
Estado.
BALONCESTO
Baloncesto jugadoras se celebrará 10 NOV. En el gimnasio y
listo! Habrá una reunión en el mes de octubre para todos los

Anime a su Leopardo… los juegos son gratis y siempre
emocionante.
EL LACROSSE
Los chicos de Lacrosse team se está dotando de ser uno de los
mejores 2 equipos División en el Estado en que están jugando
una serie de organizaba este otoño. Están dominando a los
demás opositores y División 2 con juegos muy estrecha
competencia contra la división 1. El equipo ha crecido en
número de veinte y cinco por ciento, con unos 65 jugadores en
el equipo y el futuro es muy prometedor para los niños de
Oriente Lacrosse.
También se están desplegando esfuerzos para tratar de
conseguir un equipo del Lacrosse de las mujeres. Esta es una
oportunidad magnífica para que las niñas se oriente en un
nivel de secundaria equipo deportivo, donde no es necesario
tener experiencia previa. Oriente las niñas interesadas deben
