Statement of Archbishop Blase Cupich
On the 10th anniversary of the
Catholic Campaign for Immigration Reform/Justice for Immigrants
September 19, 2015
Good afternoon. Thank you for making the pilgrimage to Federal Plaza for this prayer vigil marking
the 10th anniversary of the Catholic Campaign for Immigration Reform/Justice for Immigrants. I
wanted to be with you but am out of town today officiating my niece’s wedding.
I am grateful many of you, for the last ten years, have supported the Bishops of the United States in
their call for comprehensive immigration reform. You have accompanied our immigrant brothers
and sisters – walked with them, advocated for them, educated others about their plight – as they have
faced threats of family separation, deportation and discrimination by some employers.
Pope Francis has consistently called the universal Church to a deeper awareness of our mandate to
care for the poor and the oppressed. Most recently, he has been clear about our necessary outreach to
refugees and migrants fleeing violence in Syria, and those families continuing to flee gang violence
and government oppression in Central America.
United in the compassion and mercy of Jesus Christ, with Pope Francis, we the church of Chicago
reaffirm our commitment to walk with these brothers and sisters of ours who, despite the inaction of
our legislators and the continued threat of deportation, continue to work hard, raise strong families,
and contribute greatly to our communities.
I call on all Catholics and people of good will to work toward the day when our brothers and sisters
in the Lord will be able to emerge from the shadows of our society to add the fullness of their light
to the promise and future of our country. In the meantime, we pray for the safety of all migrants and
refugees, and ask God’s blessing on us all as we continue to extend God’s love and mercy to the
mothers, fathers and children who have immigrated here.
Let us remember that we are all immigrants!

Oświadczenie Arcybiskupa Blase Cupich
na 10-lecie powstania Katolickiej Kampanii na Rzecz Reformy Imigracyjnej

Niech będzie pochwalony Jezus Chrystus! Dziękuję Wam za przybycie z pielgrzymką na Federal Plaza, aby
podczas czuwania modlitewnego uczcić 10-lecie powstania Katolickiej Kampanii na Rzecz Reformy
Imigracyjnej. Pragnąłem być razem z Wami, ale jestem poza Chicago udzielając sakramentu małżeństwa
mojej siostrzenicy.
Jestem wdzięczny, że wielu z Was już od dziesięciu lat wspiera biskupów Stanów Zjednoczonych w ich
nawoływaniu do uchwalenia kompleksowej reformy imigracyjnej. Towarzyszycie naszym braciom i
siostrom imigrantom, podążacie i wstawiacie się za nimi, uświadamiacie innym o trudnym położeniu
imigrantów w obliczu zagrożenia deportacją, separacją rodzin i dyskryminacją przez niektórych
pracodawców.
Papież Franciszek nieustannie wzywa Kościół powszechny do głębszego uświadomienia naszej powinności
dbania o biednych i uciśnionych. Niedawno w jasny sposób papież wyrażał się o konieczności wyjścia
naprzeciw uchodźcom z ogarniętej wojną domową Syrii oraz rodzinom uciekającym przed aktami przemocy
gangów i uciskiem rządów w niektórych krajach Ameryki Środkowej.
Zjednoczeni we współczuciu i miłosierdziu Jezusa Chrystusa, wraz papieżem Franciszekiem, my Kościół
Katolicki w Chicago potwierdzamy nasze zaangażowanie w działania na rzecz tych braci i sióstr, którzy
mimo bezczynności naszych ustawodawców i ciągłego zagrożenia deportacją, nadal ciężko pracują,
zachowują silne więzy rodzinne i znacząco przyczyniają się do rozwoju naszej społeczności.
Wzywam wszystkich katolików i ludzi dobrej woli do wspólnego wysiłku, aby jak najszybciej nastał taki
dzień, w którym nasi bracia i siostry w Chrystusie będą mogli wyjść z cienia społeczeństwa i w pełni
doświadczyć nadziei na lepsze życie w naszym kraju. Tymczasem, módlmy się razem o bezpieczeństwo
wszystkich imigrantów i uchodźców. Prośmy o Boże błogosławieństwo dla nas wszystkich, abyśmy
okazywali Bożą miłość i miłosierdzie matkom, ojcom i dzieciom imigrującym do naszego kraju.
Pamiętajmy o tym, że wszyscy jesteśmy imigrantami!

En el décimo aniversario de la
Campaña Católica por la Reforma Migratoria/Justicia para los inmigrantes

Buenas tardes. Gracias por hacer el peregrinaje a la Plaza Federal para esta vigilia que marca el 10 º
aniversario de la Campaña Católica por la Reforma Migratoria/justicia para los inmigrantes. Quería
estar con ustedes, pero estoy afuera de la ciudad oficiando la boda de mi sobrina.
Agradezco que muchos de ustedes, durante los últimos diez años, han apoyado a los obispos de los
Estados Unidos en su llamada por una Reforma Migratoria integral. Han acompañado a nuestros
hermanos y hermanas inmigrantes– han caminado con ellos, abogado por ellos, han educado a
muchos acerca de su situación – cuando se han enfrentado a la amenaza de la separación de familias,
la deportación y la discriminación por parte de algunos empleadores.
El Papa Francisco ha llamado siempre a la Iglesia universal a un conocimiento más profundo de
nuestro mandato de cuidar de los pobres y oprimidos. Más recientemente, el Santo Padre ha sido
claro sobre la necesidad de ayudar a los refugiados y migrantes que huyen de la violencia en Siria y
las familias que continúan huyendo de la violencia de las pandillas y la opresión de gobiernos en
América Central.
Unidos en la compasión y la misericordia de Jesucristo, con el Papa Francisco, Nosotros en la iglesia
de Chicago reafirmamos nuestro compromiso de caminar con estos hermanos y hermanas nuestros
