God saves! - English Fellowship Church
1 EFC – Sunday, Sept 7, 2014 – God saves! We continue a three-month inspection of the foundations of English Fellowship Church – although it’s not about the physical structure. It is more like an exploration of the core Truths we want to be built on and to grow on. Keeping the rhythm of a two-word summary each week, we’ve seen: God is; God speaks; God makes; God loves; God judges; God pursues; God comes; God dies; and this morning: God saves! There are three key words to keep in mind when it comes to the belief that God saves: punishment; power and presence! When someone authentically asks God to save him or her, he or she is saved from the eternal punishment sin brings. Then, God will continue to show him or her how to be saved from the power of sin. And when his or her time on Earth is up, God saves him or her from the presence of sin! It is about more than getting out of Hell and into Heaven with The Eternal God when you die; it is also about getting The Eternal God out of Heaven and into you while you are still alive! I stared at the statement “God saves” for quite a while on Wednesday afternoon. It certainly belongs as one of the key foundations of faith. As I stared at it and thought about it it began to strike me as at least a little strange that I wasn’t experiencing more emotions. So, I dared to let the phrase keep repeating in my mind: God saves; God saves; God saves. Eventually some emotions came – as I thought about the Truth and what it means for me. I knew we would be talking about the resurrection a lot today…which got me thinking about some things Paul wrote – like, “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.” (1 Cor 15:17) I started to wonder if that last part in particular doesn’t freak us out as much as it should because we typically don’t slow down long enough or often enough to really think about our sins and what they really are and what they really do – EFC - Domingo, 07 de septiembre 2014 - Dios salva! (1 Cor. 15:17) Empecé a preguntarme si esa última parte, en particular, no nos asusta tanto como debería porque normalmente no nos detenemos lo suficiente o tan seguido como para realmente pensar en nuestros pecados y lo que realmente son y lo que realmente hacen - 2 as well as what it would mean if we were still under their punishment, had no hope of being freed of their power and would face them forever! Maybe it is because I recently officially crossed over to “the other side of 50” but I’ve noticed that more than ever, I’ve been thinking about what it will be like to just be done with sin! I’m not talking about just my own (although that will be sweeter than I could even imagine). I’m talking about all sins and all their effects…pollution, corruption, diseases, poverty, hunger, injustice and really hard-core evil! The statement “God saves” carries more hope for what is coming than I’ve ever experienced before. I have a whole new understanding of why Paul talked about how dying really does seem pretty good for a lot of reasons – although I admit there is still a real part of me that doesn’t want to die slowly, painfully or expensively. así como lo que significaría si estuviéramos todavía bajo su castigo, no teniendo ninguna esperanza de ser liberados de su poder y enfrentándolos a ellos para siempre! Those kinds of thoughts definitely got some emotions going in me…especially I let that phrase roll through my mind again: God saves; God saves; God saves. Those emotions took an abrupt turn as I began to think about the Truth and what it means for some of the people who matter most to me. As I studied for this lesson I was reminded, time and time again, Jesus talks about Hell more than anyone else in The Bible. My thoughts drifted back to the lesson “God judges” -- and how something inside me still squirms (and even weeps) when I think about me being spared Hell – because God saved me when I cried out to Him in my heart and with my mouthi on Easter Sunday, 1988. That “something inside” also squirms with the implications of Hell for some of the people who matter most to me – some who are much better people than I am! Of all The Truth in The Bible, I can’t think of anything I struggle with more than Hell. But the key word is “Truth.” I need to remember I cannot allow how I feel about something to change what I believe about it. At the same time, I believe it is good for me to carefully open myself up to experience more emotions as I continue to consider the statement “God saves.” We’re going to spend most of our time looking at the point in world history when a radical new belief began about the way God saves. 3 One of the most brilliant and religiously powerful men in history challenged the belief so passionately he had people beaten, sent to prison – and even killed for believing it. However, just a few years later, to his amazement (and to everyone else’s!), he began to believe it! This man, Paul of Tarsus, began to put his life on the line time after time, telling anyone and everyone about it!ii Before he was finally killed for it, he was able to spend a couple of decades writing about what he came to believe so passionately about how God saves. 2,000 years later, we have several versions of what he wrote. Last week I mentioned five words in one version that have hit me particularly hard this summer: "… the most important of all (out of all Paul said and wrote, if he said something is “the most important,” I have come to believe it is worth serious consideration!). "…the most important of all… is… Christ died for our sins…” (1 Cor 15:3-4, NIRV) I want to focus on two words from there: “Christ died.” (1 Cor 15:3). “Christ” wasn’t actually his name. It was added to his name by his first followers. It meant “the anointed Savior.”iii When he was born, his full, official, legal name would have been like “Jesus of Nazareth.” “Nazareth” told where he was from and “Jesus” was the name his parents gave him – because they each believed God told them to.iv Their belief in God would have set them apart in their little community. For over 30 years, they (and He) likely endured comments we cannot even imagine – because they never wavered from their story that God made her pregnant! So, at least at first, that made Jesus of Nazareth fairly well known. As he grew up, he became known for doing amazing (and even miraculous) things. Nonetheless, when he died, or maybe I should say because he died, it would have seemed as though he was just like anyone else. Even the way He died really wasn’t as spectacular as it might seem to us. By that point in history, tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of people had been put to death by crucifixion. There is even one story of 2,000 people being crucified in one day -- just to entertain a top Roman leader.v So the phrase “Christ died” is subtly fascinating. 4 The anointed Savior, the One known as “the Son” in The Trinity, is eternal. He could not have simply died, end of story.vi I wonder if Paul said, “Christ died” with a bit of a playful wink…or intended it in quotation marks. If that were all there was to the story of Jesus of Nazareth, he eventually would have been forgotten. However, since he died, more has been said and written about Him than anyone in history! Unless they’re really just looking for an argument, you won’t find many people who have been exposed to very much history and/or education who would say Jesus never existed. There is far too much evidence showing he did. But, bringing it back to the focal point of today’s lesson: was or more accurately is he the Savior? Is faith in Him the way God saves? Most people don’t get too concerned if you talk about faith in Jesus as a way to be saved, but things can get tense if you change that to “the way.” Debates, divisions and even wars continue to break out over beliefs about who Jesus really was and what he really did… and whether he has been doing anything since He died! Let’s go to one report that begins three days after Jesus was declared dead and sealed in a donated tomb! “…very early on Sunday morning, the women went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. They found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. So they went in, but they didn’t find the body of the Lord Jesus. As they stood there puzzled, two men suddenly appeared to them, clothed in dazzling robes. The women were terrified and bowed with their faces to the ground. Then the men asked, “Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive? He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Remember what he told you back in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and that he would rise again on the third day.” Then they remembered he had said this. So they rushed back from the tomb to tell his eleven disciples—and everyone else—what had happened…but the story sounded like nonsense to the men, so they didn’t believe it. 5 However, Peter jumped up and ran to the tomb to look. Stooping, he peered in and saw the empty linen wrappings; then he went home again, wondering what had happened.” (Lk 24:1-9, 1112, NLT) I wish there were some pill we could all take to make us temporarily forget everything we know about this story; I wish there were some way we could see the story through their eyes; I wish we could relate to Peter – where he was “wondering what had happened.” Although he had kept a careful (and even cowardly) distance, he saw the death and burial. As I mentioned earlier, you won’t find many people who deny either of those. The question of what happened next sets off discussions, debates and even wars! Because there is very little doubt about the death and burial, there is also very little doubt something happened to Jesus’ body – and we’re going to look at some of the theories of what that was…for those who do not believe in the resurrection. First, I want to mention something to those who believe in the literal resurrection. Try not to be too smug about any of the theories; try not to mock them – if only in your mind. I think if you were honest, you would have to admit that if Holy Spirit isn’t working on and in you, resurrection can seem at least a little crazy! Speaking of “crazy,” there is something in particular about the resurrection that should have kept it from ever becoming even a possibility. The first people to tell about the resurrection were women! In the first century, courts wouldn’t even listen to a woman's testimony. Even if a woman had been an eye-witness to a crime, she couldn’t be asked to testify because a woman’s word on something didn’t count for anything! The story of the resurrection had every reason to be thrown out after the first time it was told…but 2,000 years later, it is as alive as ever! One theory has become fairly well known as the Muslim faith continues to grow. Many Christians don’t realize the Quran actually mentions Jesus about ten times more than it mentions Mohammed. But the Quran says Jesus did not die on the cross…although it is not really clear in the Quran what happened.vii Some say the Quran says the person who died on the cross only looked like Jesus…or a substitute was slipped in. Of all the theories of what happened to Jesus, that one has the least amount of evidence. 6 I also find it interesting how Muslims are discouraged from studying and questioning the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus – and many who do question and study eventually turn from the Muslim faith. Another theory of what happened to Jesus other than resurrection was that: no body was found because His followers went to the wrong tomb. The belief is: the ladies were so emotional and in so much agony over all that had happened, they got turned around on their way to the tomb – and the men who followed them back there were just as traumatized, so they didn’t realize they were going the wrong way. People who believe this theory say the part about an angel appearing further shows how emotional and flustered they were. I see at least a couple of problems with this theory. As far as the angel goes, Matthew 28:4 shows the guards saw him, too. It isn’t the kind of thing men in those positions would have made up. Not only that, if they had gone to the wrong tomb, I can’t imagine them not looking all over the place until they found the right one. And, if they had gone to the wrong tomb, as the story of “God saving” through faith in a resurrected Jesus began to spread, either Roman or Jewish leaders could have easily killed the faith by getting the body from the “right” tomb and bringing it out for everyone to see. If you produce the body, the story of the resurrection dies with it! Another theory of what happened to Jesus other than resurrection also draws on the emotion and trauma of the scene – and says Jesus’ followers hallucinated; they just thought they saw Him alive again -- like one big group hallucination. The problem is, there were reports of Jesus appearing to hundreds of people in the days and weeks ahead – in a variety of settings. In one of his letters, Paul specifically mentioned over 500 people seeing Him.viii Believing more than 500 people in a variety of settings had the same hallucination takes way more faith than I have! And even if they had all hallucinated, as the story of “God saving” this way began to spread, the faith could have been easily crushed by simply producing the body! Another theory of what happened to Jesus other than resurrection is called “the swoon hypothesis.” That is, Jesus wasn’t really dead…and while He was in the tomb He recovered enough to slip out and escape. 7 I know there have been stories of people who were mistakenly declared dead…but I have never heard of anything like that with someone in the condition Jesus was in. First, He was beaten severely -- and then flogged. That means an executioner (or maybe two) shredded Him with a leather whip with rocks or metal balls and hooks at the ends. The idea was to “tenderize” and tear the flesh…bringing the victim just to the point of death. After the flogging, Jesus was given a cross (or at least a big part of it) to carry to the place of execution. Dehydrated, beaten, bloodied, traumatized and exhausted -- He fell -and that brought a huge post, weighing as much as 100 pounds, crashing down on top of Him. Then spikes were driven into His hands and feet -and a crown of big thorns was driven onto his head. That would have combined to drain more of the little blood left in His body. Then came Crucifixion…the actual execution – which, in Jesus’ case, included a spear jammed through His lungs or heart. Their “death experts” said, "Jesus is dead!” -- and to underline it, they said it twice! Then the “officially dead” body of Jesus was wrapped in as much as 100 pounds of burial cloth and spices. That alone would have been enough to suffocate a healthy person! Then that was sealed in a stone-cold cave! This theory says despite all that, Jesus was just unconscious and at some point He “came to,” slipped neatly out of the burial clothes, didn’t leave a trail of blood, was able to move a stone that likely weighed more than a ton… and slipped, unnoticed, past an elite squad of Roman soldiers…which also means he walked on feet that had been shattered when a spike was driven through them. It takes more faith than I have to believe that! There are many other problems with the “swoon theory” – but the biggest one for me is how no one was able to challenge what Paul bluntly stated, “Christ has indeed been raised from the dead!” (1 Cor 15:20, NIV) The swoon theory wasn’t mentioned until about 1700 years after the fact. If Jesus had really only “swooned,” you can pretty much guarantee someone would have brought it up before then. And, again, finding Jesus would have been a simple way to crush faith in his resurrection! The last theory I’ll mention has been around the longest: the body was stolen. Not only did they conspire to come up with the story of how the disciples stole the body, the soldiers added the twist that it happened while they were sleeping. First of all, how could they have known who did it if they had been sleeping? Not only that, the tomb had been officially sealed shut by the Romans. Anyone who broke a seal like it was to be put to death by the Romans – but nothing happened to the Disciples for it. And, failing on that kind of an assignment would have meant a death sentence for a Roman soldier – and there is no record of that happening. All of that aside, what some of The Disciples wrote about themselves and what others wrote about them makes it seem very unlikely they had anything to do with the disappearance of the body. At that point in history, the Disciples look more like bumbling cowards than organized terrorists – and they wrote about themselves…or they allowed the parts that made them look pretty bad to remain in the written reports! Look at one example. Just days before Jesus’ body disappeared, He had specifically told Peter he would deny even knowing him – three times in one night. That is precisely what Peter did – including swearing at a slave girl who had said she was pretty sure he did know Jesus!x If Peter let that stay in the reports it seems like pretty good evidence it actually happened. Along that line, when the body-snatching would have had to have happened, John admitted they had been terrified and huddled together, hiding in a locked room (Jn 20:19). My point is, of all the things that might have happened, the Disciples coming up with a plan to steal the body and then actually pulling it off seems the least likely! However, as days turned to weeks and weeks to months, something spectacular began happening to the Disciples. More than “spectacular,” it was “supernatural!” Earlier I mentioned “being saved” is about more than getting out of Hell and into Heaven with The Eternal God when you die; it is about getting The Eternal God out of Heaven and ever-further into you while you are still alive! That happens because after the resurrection (and ascension), Jesus submitted to God’s desire and design – which included Holy Spirit beginning a permanent global ministry like He never had before. That is the only way I can explain how the Disciples went on to live – and ultimately die – believing and telling of faith in the resurrection! esa historia - porque los jefes de los sacerdotes tamnién los sobornaron No sólo conspiraron para llegar a la historia de cómo los discípulos robaron el cuerpo, los soldados añaden el toque que sucedió mientras estaban durmiendo. 9 If there had been a body anywhere, I believe at some point at least one of them would have broken under the pressure and admitted it was a scam...and it wasn’t worth the risk of keeping the story going – for a dead leader who wasn’t what he claimed to be! To the contrary, they kept talking about Jesus and His resurrection. Arresting them didn’t silence them. Neither did torture. Inventing barbaric ways to kill them only made them more eager to talk about resurrection – Jesus’ resurrection and their anticipation of their own. As they grew in their understanding of how God saved them, they couldn’t tell enough people about it. In a matter of days the Disciples came out of hiding and began preaching – and not one of them backed down. King Herod ordered James to shut up – and when he didn’t, Herod had him skewered with a sword. Thomas went to tell people about Jesus and His resurrection in what is now India -- where he was tortured with red-hot plates, pierced with a spear, and burned alive. One Roman leader had Philip tortured and crucified because the leader’s wife asked Jesus to save her before Philip even finished preaching...and Philip continued to preach from the cross. Matthew was stabbed in the back while preaching in Ethiopia. Bartholomew was flogged to death in Armenia. The “other” James was thrown from the top of the Temple in Jerusalem. He survived, kept talking about Jesus being alive and was clubbed to death by a mob. Simon the Zealot was crucified. Thaddeus was beaten to death with sticks. Matthias, who replaced Judas, was stoned to death and then beheaded. Peter was crucified upside down – because he said he was not worthy to die like Jesus had! John is the only disciple who died of natural causes -- but only because he survived what was supposed to be a horrific execution. The emperor had him boiled in oil to try to silence him – but John didn’t stop preaching…and “somehow” he didn’t die. The emperor finally sent him to exile so he didn’t have to listen to him. Ironically, he wrote what went on to become five books of The Bible…so in a way, he has never stopped talking about Jesus! I know lots of people throughout history have been tortured and/or willingly died in ways like the Disciples were. El hecho de que ellos estaban dispuestos a 10 go through what they did doesn’t automatically validate the “cause.” More guys than ever seem to be doing things like strapping bombs to their chests, taking as many people with them as they can. One main difference between them and the Disciples is they’re doing it with the elusive hope that it might please “Allah” enough to let them in to eternity… and if they do it under the right circumstances they could get 72 virgins, too!xi One of the main things that sets authentic Christianity apart is that we’re called to do what we do for others. The first Disciples learned to be so amazed that God saved them they were willing to give their lives so others would hear how God saves! Authentic Christ-ianity is the only faith, belief system or approach to life that calls you to continually live more concerned about others than yourself – and promises to continue to transform you to make you want to live that way and continues to empower you to do it! That is one of the most amazing and beautiful parts of having a living Savior! That is also why the resurrection is such a crucial part of the part of our foundation we’re looking at today! God saves! God saves! God saves! Does He? How? So what? Now what? i ii Romans 10:9 https://www.blueletterbible.org/study/paul/timeline.cfm http://www.abarimpublications.com/Meaning/Christ.html#.VAZINuM7tN c iv Matthew 1:21; Luke 1:31 v http://mb-soft.com/believe/text/crucifix.htm vi http://www.gotquestions.org/death-resurrectionMessiah.html vii Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Meaning of the Holy Qur’an, 235-36. viii 1 Corinthians 15:6 ix 1 Corinthians 15:6 x Matthew 26:69-75; Mark 14:66-72 iii xi http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/1 35931#.VAeQJsVdWSo ir a través de lo que hicieron no valida automáticamente la "causa". Dios salva! Dios salva! Dios salva! ¿Él salva? ¿Cómo? ¿Y qué? ¿Y ahora qué?
