TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
SEPTEMBER 4, 2016
A Word from
Our Pastor Fr. Ron Weissbeck
My dear family in Christ, A couple of weeks ago I happened to tune into the CBS
news program, 60 Minutes. With the most recent addition to the
Smithsonian on the history of human slavery in the United States
and its major players, one of the segments of the program dealt
with the human slave trade run out of Mozambique Island by the
Portuguese. Mozambique Island sits off the southwestern coast of
Africa and was the major launching point for sending the captured
natives to both North and South America. The program reported
the limited amount of concrete evidence of the existence of the
trade. Human slavery is part of our history and after having seen
that feature on 60 Minutes, I now have a different perspective on
the use of the word, slave, as Paul uses it in the second reading
from his personal letter to Philemon, who was the owner of the
slave Onesimus. It seems to me that it is one thing to choose to be a slave
of Christ and becoming a slave against one’s will. In the first example one makes a choice to follow a way of life, in the second
it has been and still is forced labor that pays little attention to the
dignity of the person. A slave has no rights and is considered,
primarily, a piece of property to be used as the owner dictates.
Paul makes the appeal to Philemon that the servant, Onesimus, is no longer a slave but a brother. That is a radical
change not only in perspective but in relationship. Conquered
people throughout history have been enslaved to suit the purposes
of the conqueror. In this letter Paul makes the change from an
economic consideration to the total understanding of being a new
creation in Christ, “now you will know him both as a man and in
the Lord” (Philemon 17).
Slavery, as an institution, no longer exists in the United
States. It ended with the passing of the Thirteenth Amendment to
our Constitution. We may no longer have legal human slavery but
slavery is still present in other forms, including addictions. Slavery is not an end to the person in itself, for it wrestles with the
basic freedom that has been given to all humans. Slavery makes
an object of a human being. On the other hand, as people of faith, work was introduced in the book of Genesis as a positive extension of being human and a person. I offer then, instead of slavery, an approach to work that incorporates Catholic values. These values
have been reflected upon in the writings of our late pope, John
Paul II.
The tradition that ought to be included, as we pause this
Labor Day, is that work is not just a means of having the resources
to pay the bills. “Work,” as reflected upon by Pope John Paul II
in the encyclical Laborem Exercens, September 14, 1981, “is a
good thing for man²a good thing for his humanity²because
through work man not only transforms nature, adapting it to his
own needs, but he also achieves fulfillment as a human being and indeed, in a sense, becomes more of a human being” (LE #9.3). So on this Labor Day weekend, during the various activities in which we may participate, let us remember that we
were created for God, and that work is the way we develop and
use that which we have been endowed to not just pay the bills but,
by extension, to give glory to God who has created us in the divine image.
On Monday, September 5th, the Parish Office and Eucharistic Adoration will be closed due to the Labor Day
holiday. There will be daily Masses at 6:30 a.m. and 8:15
a.m., in the chapel. Men of Faith r esumes on Thur sday, September 15th
with a fantastic new series from Bishop Robert Barron:
“Catholicism: The Pivotal Players.” Join us at 6:00 a.m.
for breakfast, a DVD lesson, and discussion. This series
focuses on St. Francis of Assisi, St. Thomas Aquinas, St.
Catherine of Siena, G. K. Chesterton, Michaelangelo, and
more. For more information and to sign up for this free
program, contact Terry Medearis at 3034759109 or [email protected]. Or visit:

Denver Catholic Biblical School
Registration is Now Open for
the 20162017 school year.
The Denver Catholic Biblical School was founded
in response to Vatican II’s call for a renewal in the study
of sacred scripture among the people of God. For over
thirty years the school has made God’s Word come alive
for thousands across the Archdiocese and the country. Whether you have been a long time student of the Scriptures or a beginner, these classes will help you discover the timelessness of God’s Word and transform
your life.
The school year consists of 30 weeks of classes,
spanning September to May with breaks included.
Scholarships and financial aid are available based on need.
For more information please visit: sjvdenver.edu/biblicalschool or call 3037153195. Information flyers are also available at the north and south
entrances to the church. Volunteer Opportunity Funeral Sacristans Needed!
In this Year of Mercy, we focus on our Corporal
Works of Mercy which includes the burying of the dead.
Our liturgy ministry is in need of sacristans who are available during the day to assist us with our funeral Masses. Funerals give us the opportunity to grieve and
show others support during difficult times. Through our
prayers and actions, we show our respect for life which is
always a gift from God and a comfort to those who mourn.
Our funeral Masses are generally scheduled Mondays through Fridays in the late mornings or early afternoons and occasionally on Saturdays. If this opportunity is of interest to you, please plan toattend a
training session scheduled onWednesday, September 7th
at 10:30 a.m. The training will begin in the chapel and end
in the church. If you have any questions, please call Ron
Lamping at7206529732.

Catherine room. The cost is
$16 for the study guide. For
more information, please contact Betty at 3037720620
or Pauline at 3036510109.
CALLING ALL CATECHISTS!! If you ever thought
you may want to work with the children of this parish,
please consider volunteering for the Religious Education
program. Please don’t think you don’t know enough about
the faith to take on that role; we will help you through the
educational portion. These kids need and want faithful
role models. If you have a passion for the faith and desire
to help pass it along to others, why not consider passing it along to our children?
Any man or woman who would like to
share their time and talent to make a
salad or dessert for a funeral dinner,
please call Sue Tornow at 3037722689. The Altar and Rosary
Society is looking for parishioners to provide a dish for
funeral dinners. You would need to drop off the dish in a
disposable pan at church by 10:00 a.m. on the day of the
funeral. You would be called at least 2 days before the
funeral.
RCIA, with Anna Campbell
The next RCIA Journey will begin on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 8:30 a.m.
Do you know that there are people who believe
the Catholic faith may not be approached without an invitation? A few years ago I spoke with a man
who had attended Mass with his wife for 54 years. After
her death I asked him why he hadn’t chosen to join her in
her faith. His answer...he was never asked! I invited him,
he soon made his profession of faith!
Do you know someone who is waiting to be invited? By
our baptism we are called to evangelize. I urge you to offer
an invitation to someone to come inquire about our faith. If everyone you know is active in their Catholic faith,
please pray that those who may not be your friends will
find their way to know God. If you have questions please
call. To learn more contact Anna Campbell at 3037760737 extension 140, or [email protected]. Newly retired or looking for different volunteer
gigs? Consider joining St. John’s Altar and Rosary Society. We meet the first Wednesday of each month to
pray the rosary together and have a meeting. Our group
cares for the flowers and church linens on the altar. We
take care of funeral dinners, the Mother/Daughter breakfast, and several altruistic projects. We are always
looking for new members and we would love for you to
consider joining our group. For information, call Mary

Colorado Catholic Conference
PROPOSITION 106: Seeks to legalize physician assisted
suicide. This November Colorado voters will be asked
whether or not physician assisted suicide should be legalized
in Colorado. It is extremely unfortunate that the issue of physician assisted suicide will be on the ballot in November.
It is our hope that the voters of Colorado recognize the
flawed logic of those supporting this effort ± namely that it is
illogical for the state to promote and/or facilitate suicide for
one group of persons ² calling the suicides of those with a
terminal illness and a specific prognosis “dignified and humane,” while recognizing suicide as a serious statewide
public health concern in all other circumstances, and spending enormous resources to combat it.
We hope that the people of Colorado will vote to oppose this dangerous and harmful initiative and instead urge
elected officials to improve access to palliative care and hospice care for those in the final stages of terminal illness.
Improved education and training of physicians in pain management, together with appropriate diagnosis and treatment for depression, would go a long way toward eliminating calls for suicide among the sick and the dying.
What can you do to help defeat Proposition 106?
* Make a donation.
None of us can afford to be silent on this issue. Already our opponents have set aside $5 million dollars and
are expected to invest even more money in making Colorado
the next assisted suicide state.Checks can be made out

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
siguiendo”. Esto le causará el mayor gozo al Padre, al Hijo
y al Espíritu Santo. Fr. Gerardo
