Portable Heating Devices
For some post-collection sites and maintenance shops, the onset of winter means
heating areas with temporary heaters. When used correctly, temporary heaters can
make your working environment much more comfortable. When used incorrectly,
they present a significant risk of fire or explosion.
Inspect your equipment! Heaters are used seasonally and are often stored for long
periods of time between uses. Before using any space heater or other temporary
heating device, make certain it is functioning properly and approved for the
environment in which you plan to use it.
These Things Get Hot! Some Things to Keep in Mind:
• Be aware that the outside of the heater may not look hot, but if you
touch it, you could be severely burned.
• Heaters must be set on suitable heat-insulating material, level and
secured to prevent tipping over. Select heaters that automatically
shut off when tipped over.
• Temporary heaters must be placed at least 10 ft. from combustible
materials, tarpaulins or similar coverings.
• Use heating devices in their intended position, horizontal or vertical,
depending on the manufacturer.
• Each temporary heating unit must have a fire extinguisher with a
rating of at least 20-ABC positioned to be immediately available in
the event of a fire.
Be sure to get authorization to use any temporary heating device. And always use
them in accordance with your company’s policy and the manufacturer’s
specifications. Make certain all workers are aware of their presence and instructed in
their safe use.

Calentadores Portátiles
En algunos lugares de posrecolección y puestos de mantenimiento, cuando comienza el
invierno, se calefacciona el lugar con calentadores temporarios. Cuando se usan correctamente,
estos calentadores logran que el entorno de trabajo sea mucho más cálido. Cuando se usan de
manera incorrecta, representan un alto riesgo de incendio o explosión.
¡Inspeccione su equipo! Los calentadores solo se usan en la temporada de frío y, por lo general,
permanecen almacenados durante largos períodos entre un uso y otro. Antes de utilizar cualquier radiador u otro calentador temporario, asegúrese de que funcione adecuadamente y de
que esté aprobado para el entorno en el que planea usarlo.
¡Estos aparatos se calientan! Algunos aspectos a tener en cuenta:
• Aun cuando es probable que el exterior del calentador no parezca caliente,
si lo toca, podría sufrir quemaduras graves.
• Los calentadores deben colocarse sobre materiales adecuados para aislar el
calor, y estar nivelados y sujetos para evitar caídas. Seleccione los
calentadores que se apaguen automáticamente al caerse.
• Los calentadores temporarios deben colocarse, al menos, a 10 pies de
distancia de materiales combustibles, lonas o protectores similares.
• Utilice los calentadores en la posición indicada por el fabricante, ya sea
horizontal o vertical.
• Cada calentador temporario debe contar con un extintor de incendios de, al
