Principal News
Greetings to all our Pierson families and friends.
It is amazing to think that as the seasons change we are already almost to the
end of our first 9 week period of the 2013 ~ 2014 school year. Our Pierson
Patriots have been working very hard with their academics, and we are
extremely pleased with their progress. Our dedicated faculty and staff is
committed to making sure every student succeeds. Remember to check your
child’s grades online using the Gradebook Internet Viewer (PIV) on the
District (myvolusiaschools.org) website .
Thank you to all of our families for a very smooth start to the new Visitor’s
Policy. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in signing in and out at the
front office when visiting the campus. Thank you for working together with
us to keep our children safe.
To that end, we will be participating in National
Walk to School Day again this year. National
Walk to School Day is Wednesday, October 9th,
and we hope many families will join us as we
walk to school together. Students will meet at
the Pierson Town Hall to walk to Pierson
Elementary with the assistance of the Volusia
County Safety Team. More information about
this event will be coming home soon.
Remember, together we can make a difference in the lives of our
children. We look forward to working closely with you this school year! Go

Saludos a todas nuestras familias y amigos de Pierson.
Es asombroso el pensar que así como nos cambia la estación del año ya casi estamos al final de las primeras
nueve semanas del año escolar 2013 ~ 2014. Nuestros Patriotas de Pierson han estado trabajando muy duro
con sus estudios académicos, y nosotros estamos muy complacidos con sus progresos. Nuestra facultad de
maestros y empleados están dedicados en asegurarse que cada estudiante tenga éxito. Recuerde el chequear
las calificaciones de su niño en el Gradebook de la Red Electrónica (PIV) en el Distrito

Gracias a todas nuestras familias por haber hecho una transición muy tranquila en nuestro nuevo Sistema de
Visitas. Agradecemos mucho el que firme en la oficina principal su entrada y salida cuando visita nuestra
escuela. Gracias por trabajar juntamente con nosotros en mantener a nuestros estudiantes seguros.
De nuevo este año estaremos participando en el Día Nacional de
Caminar a la Escuela, que se estará llevando a cabo el Miércoles,
9 de Octubre, y esperamos la participación de muchas familias
para caminar a la escuela juntos. Los estudiantes se reunirán en la
Alcaldía de Pierson para caminar a la Escuela Elemental de
Pierson con la asistencia del Departamento de Seguridad del
Condado de Volusia. Muy pronto estaremos mandando más
información a casa.
¡Recuerde, juntos podemos hacer la diferencia en la vida de nuestros niños. Esperamos trabajar juntamente

Pre-Kinder
Our Pre-kindergarten students are off to a great start. We have been busy learning how to work cooperatively
in the classroom and what is expected of students in a school setting. Students are learning to recognize and
write their name. Parents, please work with your child at home writing their name and identifying the letters in
their name. We have introduced the letters Aa and Bb so far. Students should be able to identify these letters
by their name and their corresponding sound. They have also practiced writing these letters correctly. Parents,
you can purchase a set of alphabet cards from the Dollar Store and practice the letter names and their sounds
with your students. If you have a computer at home, your child can go to Starfall.com for additional practice
with letters and sounds. In mathematics, we have created and extended AB patterns, measured objects using
string, and compared groups of objects. Your child is a scientist. We are learning about the tools scientists use
and the steps of the scientific method. Your child has participated in several science labs, such as color mixing
and a lab on magnets. Parents, it is very important that you check your child’s behavioral calendar in their
folder each night. Praise your child if they received a happy face. If they received a straight face or a sad face,
talk to your child about the importance of following classroom rules, listening to the teacher(s), and following
directions. Parents, I just want to remind you that drop off time for students is 7:30 am and pick up is at
3:20pm. The teachers are in the classroom earlier but are busy preparing for the instructional day. Please do
not drop your child off before 7:30 am. Also, please be prompt picking up your child at 3:20. Important
faculty meetings are scheduled after school and begin promptly at 3:30 pm. Thanks for your support.
Kindergarten
Your Pierson Elementary School Kindergarten class is off to a wonderful start this school year. We have been
busy getting to know our new friends and teachers. We also learned our way around the school by searching
for the ever elusive Gingerbread Man! You may not have known, but he was running loose around Pierson
Elementary! Each Kindergarten class decorated and baked our own Gingerbread Man. He sure was yummy!
We are working on learning how to write our names, identify the letters in the alphabet, and name their
sounds. Kindergarten sight words are being introduced and practiced daily. In Math, we are focusing on
sorting and 2D and 3D shapes. Also, learning our color words is keeping us busy. Did you know that
Kindergarteners are also becoming scientists? We are exploring the 5 Senses and learning many ways to
explore the world around us. At home parents can work with their students on all these skills to help them
become even better students!

Nuestros estudiantes de Pre-kindergarten han tenido un gran comienzo. Nosotros estamos muy ocupados

acerca de las herramientas de los científicos y los pasos de los métodos científicos. Su hijo a participado en
varios laboratorios de ciencias, tales como la mezclas de colores y un laboratorio en imanes. Padres, es muy
importante que usted revise el calendario de comportamiento de su hijo en su carpeta cada noche. Felicite a
su niño si recibió una cara feliz. Si recibieron una cara seria o triste, hable con su hijo a cerca de la

Kinder
Las clases de Kínder de la Escuela Elemental de Pierson han comenzado con un fabuloso año escolar. Hemos
estado bien ocupados tratando de conocer a nuestros nuevos estudiantes y maestros. También hemos
aprendido nuestros alrededores aquí en la escuela cuando anduvimos buscando la galleta del Hombre de
Jengibre. Usted puede que no sepa, pero andaba corriendo por todos los alrededores de la Escuela de Pierson.
Cada clase de kínder hornó y decoró sus propios Hombres de Jengibre. ¡El sí que estuvo bien sabroso!
Estamos trabajando en aprender cómo escribir nuestros nombres, identificar las letras del alfabeto, y el

First Grade
It has been a great start to a new year and first graders have been very busy. In Reading, we have been working on
words with short vowels, retelling events of a story in order and plot development of a story such as character and
setting. At home it’s important to be reading each night (at least 15 minutes) and it would be great if you could ask
your child about the characters, settings and events in the story. We have also been busy practicing and reading high
frequency words, so practice these words each night. High Frequency words are words your child should know by
sight.The first few weeks we enjoyed writing about stories we have been reading like “Pete the Cat” and writing
informational pieces on community helpers. At this time, your child should be writing at least 4 sentences with a
closing sentence and should be using capital letters and periods at all times, so please encourage this as your child
writes at home.
Our afternoon has been very busy learning new addition and subtraction strategies. At this time your child should be
able to add and subtract on a number line or tens frame, and should be able to begin counting on and back mentally. It
would be a great help at home if you could purchase or make flash cards for addition and subtraction up to 12.
First graders at Pierson Elementary are Scientists! We have been practicing our scientific skills using our five senses
and science tools. Ask your child what fun science activity they enjoyed the most!
Please also note that a homework packet will come home each Monday and is to be turned in on Fridays. Reading
Logs should be signed each night. Each line equals 15 minutes of reading, not each book read. During this 15
minutes your child can read to you and you can read to your child.
We look forward to an awesome school year! Please schedule a conference with your child’s teacher if you have any
concerns or questions.
Second Grade
As we begin the new school year, your students have been learning non-stop. We are completing our first unit in
Reading and our classes will soon take their first district assessment. Making sure that your student is reading every
night is extremely important. This practice will help their fluency and comprehension skills. In Math, we have just
finished our units for subtraction and addition. We have taken nature walks in Science and explored all of the tools that
we will use to become better scientists throughout the year. We have also been focusing on integrating both Science
and Social Studies in students daily Reading instruction.
We ask your support in making sure that your student is here by 8:00 a.m. every morning. We are working very hard to
begin instruction by 8:10, so that we can use our time effectively. Please make sure that your student is either wearing
or is bringing shoes that can be worn during P.E. It is very important that they are able to participate during their
special area. If you are unsure of when your child will be in P.E., please feel free to contact us. Another way to help
your child succeed is to make sure they are completing their homework every night. This practice helps to
reinforce the skills that we have taught during the day. In the next month, please look for notes contacting
you about conferences. We want to keep you involved in your child’s academic career, so that you can
celebrate in their success.

Primer Grado
Ha sido un buen comienzo de año y los niños del primer grado han estado muy ocupados. En lectura hemos estado
trabajando en palabras con vocales cortas, contando los acontecimientos de la historia en orden y desarrollo del tema de
una historia como su carácter y ambiente. En la casa, es importante leer todas las noches (por lo menos 15 minutos) y
sería estupendo que le preguntara a su hijo sobre los personajes, escenarios y eventos de la historia. También hemos
estado ocupados practicando y leyendo las palabras de alta frecuente, así que practique estas palabras cada noche.

Third Grade
Third graders have been busy little bees! We have been reviewing addition and subtraction skills from 2nd
grade. We are learning how to add and subtract really BIG numbers and how to problem solve. Ask your
child what key words they know for Math problem solving.
We have also transformed into scientists. We have conducted some experiments to better understand the
scientific method. Who knew 3rd grade students could make “magic milk”?
Our reading lessons have taken us into the world of fiction and nonfiction. We really enjoy discussing the
stories we have read. We have related our own experiences from the stories and put them into writing.
Please be sure to check and sign your child’s planner each day! Thank you!
Fourth Grade
Fourth grade is excited to announce that we will begin to learn about Space. Right now we are completing
our Science Unit on the Practice of Science. We have investigated the reaction different solutions have on
Gummi Bear Candy. It was interesting to see how our results compared to our hypothesis. Please make sure
to keep a log on the Moon Phases for the month of September. (Hint: Every thirty days something occurs.)
In math, we are finishing our Number Sense Unit (which involves numbers to hundred million). We will
begin to learn about the concept of multiplication and division. Make sure to drill your child daily from 0-12
facts. Our students are expected to be fluent with the facts from 0-12.
To improve our students reading, they must read 30 minutes daily and discuss what they read with someone.
Their comprehension will be monitored through Reading Counts Test. Just a reminder, each 15 minutes your
child reads you need to sign one step.
Another great way to help our students become stronger writers is by talking more to them about past
experiences (favorite time, funniest moment, etc.) Our students are writing personal Narratives within five
paragraphs. Try keeping a journal at home and creating more memories.

Tercer Grado
¡Los del tercer grado han sido pequeñas abejas bien ocupadas! Hemos estado repasando nuestras destrezas de suma y
resta del 2do grado. Estamos aprendiendo como sumar y restar números bien GRANDES y como resolver problemas.
Pregúntele a su niño cuales son las nuevas palabras claves que saben para resolver problemas de matemáticas.
También nos hemos convertido en científicos. Hemos conducido algunos experimentos para mejorar nuestro
entendimiento del método científico. ¿Quién sabe que los del tercer grado pueden hacer “leche mágica”
Nuestras lecciones de lectura nos han llevado a un mundo real y no real. Nos encanta el hablar acerca de las historias
que leemos. Hemos relacionado nuestras propias experiencias con las historias y las hemos escrito.

Fifth Grade
5th grade is working hard. We have already covered multiplication and division and the practice of Science. We
took a STEM field trip in September to support our math and Science studies. We are using Reading Counts
competitions to support our reading studies. In Reading, we are working with literature books and informational
texts. Our focus is identifying theme and main idea. In Math, we are working on algebraic thinking and problem
solving. In Science, we have jumped into Space and will soon be learning about weather.. Our 5th Grade Science
Fair is coming up. You should have already received information on the program. Students can access their math
book and their science book online. Please contact the teacher for codes if you would like to access the websites at
home. Please encourage your child to read every night and to practice their multiplication skills.
Art
Welcome to an exciting new year in Art where creative thinking and problem solving is going to be at the forefront
in all grade levels (K-5). Core subjects will be incorporated across the curriculum in art class to assist in achieving a
higher academic standard, and to help in closing the achievement gap here at Pierson Elementary. Math, Science,
and Reading will be taught through the introduction to cultures, history, geography, and exploration.
Students will work together more diligently, and learn from each other because the classroom will become a
learning community. The curriculum will become more hands-on and project based. Learning in all subjects will
become more visible through the arts.
Emphasis will be placed on following directions, imagination, individual effort, and neatness, as it relates to
classroom assignments. Good character, and respect towards teachers and classmates will be encouraged.
The art program will be building partnerships with the community by drawing on its resources and creating more
parent involvement through projects, exhibitions, and special events.

Quinto Grado
El 5to grado está trabajando muy duro. Ya hemos cubierto la multiplicación, división, y la práctica de
ciencia. Hicimos el paseo STEM en Septiembre para dar soporte a nuestros estudios de matemáticas y
ciencia. Estamos usando la Lectura Cuenta para fortalecer nuestros estudios de lectura. En lectura
estamos trabajando con libros de literatura e información de texto. Nuestro punto principal es identificar
los temas y la idea principal. En matemáticas estamos trabajando en pensamiento algebraico y resolución
de problemas. En ciencia hemos entrado en el Espacio y muy pronto estaremos aprendiendo acerca del
clima. La feria de Ciencia del 5to grado ya se nos acerca. Usted ya debería de haber recibido información
en este programa. Los estudiantes pueden tener acceso a los libros de matemáticas y ciencia en la línea
electrónica. Por favor ponerse en contacto con la maestra de su niño para tener acceso a los sitios
electrónicos en casa. Por favor anime a sus niños a leer todas las noches y practicar sus destrezas de
multiplicación.
Art
Bienvenidos a un año nuevo y emocionante en el arte donde el pensamiento creativo y la resolución de
problemas van a estar a la vanguardia en todos los niveles de grados (K-5). Las materias básicas serán
incorporadas en el círculo de la clase de arte para ayudar a cerrar la brecha en el rendimiento aquí en la

ESOL
Welcome to our two new ESOL Resource teachers Lisara Stinga and Hilma Davis!
Our ESOL groups are going very well. In Kindergarten, we are learning words that begin with the letter “m” and
sight words -we, the, see, I, can. In first grade, we are learning about changes in animals as they grow. In second grade,
we are learning about different emergencies. In third grade, are learning about blue whales of Antarctica. In fourth
grade, we are learning about Isle Royale, and in fifth grade, we are learning about endangered animals and their
habitats.
EXTENDED DAY ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
(EDEP)
My name is Ana Negron; I’m the facilitator for Extended Day after School Program (EDEP).
The Extended Day Enrichment Program at Pierson Elementary will enrich the educational, emotional, social
and physical well being of students in a well supervised quality program.
EDEP provides after school care in a safe environment for children to receive homework assistance, explore
new hobbies, develops friendships, and participate in many activities.
The hours of operation are after school hours to 5:45 p.m.

¡Le damos la bienvenida a nuestras dos nuevas maestras de ESOL Lisara Stinga y Hilma Davis!
Nuestros grupos de ESOL van muy bien. En Kinder estamos aprendiendo las palabras que comienzan con la
letra “m” y palabras de alta frecuencia tales como we, the, see, I, y can. En primer grado estamos aprendiendo
acerca de cómo los animales cambian cuando están creciendo; en segundo grado estamos aprendiendo acerca
de diferentes emergencias; en el tercer grado estamos aprendiendo acerca de las ballenas azules de la
Antártica; en el cuarto grado nosotros estamos aprendiendo acerca de Isle Royale, y en el quinto grado

The Larissa Gerstel Parenting Center invites you, your children, friends, families,
teachers, and staff to come and learn new ways to help students learn. I’ll be more
than happy to help you in selecting books, educational games, and activities that
can be barrowed free of charge from the Partenting Center. Your children will be
playing and learning at the same time. There are many different kind of books for
all age available. We also invite you to participate in different activities such as
Family Fun Nights, Curriculum Nights, Mathematics, Science, Literacy, and
other activities during the school year. Our goal is to provide parents
opportunities to engage with their children and the school. Come and participate,
become familiar with the SAC and attend PTO meetings (child care available for
those meetings).
Let’s help our students become more successful not only in school, but with
everything that concerns the education of our children, to you as parents and our
community. Come and visit us I look forward to seeing you!

El Centro de Padres Larissa Gerstel le invita a usted, sus hijos, amigos,
familias, maestros, y empleados a que venga y descubra las nuevas formas de
cómo ayudar a su estudiante a que aprenda. Estaré mas que feliz en ayudarle en
seleccionar libros, juegos educacionales, y actividades que puede prestar libre
de cargos del Centro de Padres Larissa Gerstel. Sus niños se estarán
divirtiendo y al mismo tiempo aprendiendo. Tenemos a la disposición muchas
variedades de libros para todas las edades. También lo invitamos a que
participe en diferentes actividades tales como Noche de Diversión Familiar,
Noche de Planes de Estudio, Matemáticas, Ciencia, Literatura y otras actidades
durante el ano escolar.
Nuestra meta es de proveer a los padres oportunidades de relacionarse con su
niño y su escuela. Vengan y participen, familiarícese con el SAC y participe
en las reuniones del PTO (tendremos cuidado de niños en estas reuniones).
Ayudemos a nuestros estudiantes a tener mas éxito no solo en la escuela, pero
en todo lo que se refiere a la educación de nuestros ninos, como padres y
