Prayer to Pope
St. Leo the Great
Grant to us, O Lord,
not to mind earthly

How often, when we speak of church, we have to clarify whether we mean the faith
community or the building where that community gathers. The fact that the Feast of the
Dedication of the Lateran Basilica today replaces even the Sunday liturgy reminds us that
our faith reaches into the clay from which we are made. We celebrate this building—the
pope’s own cathedral, the mother of all churches—remembering that human beings need
things that appeal to the senses to remind us of spiritual values. Saint Augustine says that
when the community of faith gathers “they are hewn out, as it were, from mountains and
forests, like stones and timber; but by catechizing, baptism, and instruction they are . . .
shaped, squared, and planed by the hands of the workers and artisans” and finally are made
into a house for the Lord, “fitted together through love.”

MASS INTENTIONS
FROM THE
PASTOR
...
Dear Parish Family,
Today we celebrate the Feast of the Dedication of the
Lateran Basilica. I have had the privilege of visiting this
beautiful Church which is the cathedral of the Diocese of
Rome, the Pope’s Cathedral. We commemorate this
dedication as a way of honoring all of the consecrated
churches of the world which includes our own church.
Sometimes people ask me the differences between a
church, a basilica and a cathedral. The word church is
taken from the Greek kyriake meaning “the Lord’s
house.” If a building is consecrated as a place to assemble
the faithful for worship, this building is a “house of God”
and therefore a church.
Cathedral, from the Greek kathedra, meaning “chair” or
“throne”, refers to the official church where the local
bishop presides over worship and the diocese at large.
The presider’s chair is a symbol of the teaching and
governing authority of the bishop in his diocese. St. Mary
of the Assumption is the cathedral church for the Diocese
of Trenton.
Basilicas were originally office buildings of the Roman
Empire. When Christians acquired these buildings they
were appropriated for Christ the King. All major basilicas
are located in Rome. The four most important are Saint
Peter’s in the Vatican, St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major
and St. Paul Outside the Walls. I have been blessed to
have visited all four of these special churches.
In this month of November we continue to remember
in prayer all those faithful departed and in particular the
members of our own families. Please know how grateful I
am for all of your prayers and love shown to me and my
family at the loss of my brother John. I hope you will join
with me on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 2pm for mass at St.
Joseph Cemetery and on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 7pm for a
special mass of remembrance for those who have gone
home to God this past year.
God bless you all,
Fr. Scott

the words of the Psalmist “ Give thanks to the Lord, invoke his name; Make known among the people his
deeds.” Ps105:1 As Thanksgiving Day is approaching this is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on not only the
obvious blessings in our lives but on those hidden blessings we don’t always recognize so that we may strive
more and more to be people who are “Giving thanks always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ to God the Father.” Eph 5: 20

HORARIO DE MISAS
MENSAJE DEL
PASTOR …
Querida Familia Parroquial:
mundo incluyendo nuestra propia iglesia.
He tenido la
