B, D, F, W-RATE IN-SERVICE (RENEWAL) English and Spanish classes/trainings for foster and kinship (relative) caregivers are offered throughout the year. ALL CLASSES are FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. D and F-RATE PRE-SERVICE The 16-hour Pre-Service Certification trainings for D (emotional/ behavioral difficulties) and F (medically fragile) Rates are available in English and Spanish throughout the year. WFFH PRE-SERVICE The 16-hour Pre-Service Certification training is also available. A WFFH home provides foster care and support for a minor parent and his/her independent child. KINSHIP ORIENTATION/EDUCATIONAL GROUPS The Kinship Orientation provides overview of aspects of the DCFS system as it pertains to relative caregivers. All Kinship educational classes are specifically designed to meet the unique needs and challenges of relatives (grandparents, siblings, aunts/ uncles, cousins, and non-related extended family members) caring for children in out of home care. YOUTH EMPOWERMENT STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS (YESS-ILP) CALIFORNIA This program provides services, mentoring, and life-skills training to transitioning foster youth. YESS-CA aims to help current and former foster/probation youth transition successfully into selfsufficiency and adulthood. Classes and services are provided out in the community and on campus. Will I receive a certificate for attending the class/training? I am not a foster parent or relative caregiver, but would still like to attend classes/trainings. Is this possible? Yes. Even though our target population is foster parents & relative caregivers, classes/trainings are open to the community including social workers, group home staff, family, and friends. Can I bring children to the class? No, childcare is not available, *unless noted. What is the difference between the Pre-Service and the In-Service (Renewal) Classes? Pre-Service Training, is for first time certification ONLY and can not be used for certification renewal purposes. Renewal hours must be completed yearly to keep your certification current and hours vary depending on rate. ¿Qué es la diferencia entre el Pre-Servicio y las Clases/ Entrenamientos de Renovación? How many in-service (renewal) hours do I need to take yearly? Currently the yearly renewal hours for B-Rate and F-Rate are 12 hours. The class will focus on talking with children about death, the process of grief and loss, expressing emotions, remembering loved ones, and finding strength in one another. Each family will receive the official Sesame Street When Families Grieve resource kit which includes a video, parent guide, books, and much more. Presenter – Betsy Cisneros September 9 – Accessing Special Education Services & the IEP Process (B, D, or F-Rate) This class will emphasize on the educational rights and services available as well as the importance of being an advocate in regards to their child’s individual educational needs. Parents will identify what an IEP is and the educational rights of their children in order to promote academic success and development. Presenter – Cindy Rodas September 16 –Teen Brain Under Construction (B, D, or F-Rate) Experts are exploring the recesses of the brain and finding explanations for why our teens behave the way they do. This class will give parents an overview of brain development during adolescence and will recognize signs of problematic conditions/issues and how to address them. Presenter – Catherine Meurer September 23 – What to Do When Your Child Gets Sick? Common Child Conditions: Allergies & Asthma (B, D, or F-Rate) This class will discuss what every parent should know when it comes to keeping your child safe and healthy. Parents will get to review various common conditions that may arise along with a focus on allergies and asthma. Parents will identify causes, symptoms, preventable measures, as well as treatment and immediate medical attention. Presenter – Philomina Walker, Public Health Nurse Continued on next page 8 Los Nietos Community Center - Continued In-Service (Renewal) September 30 – When Can I/We Go Home? (B, D, or F-Rate) This class will address the emotions as well as behaviors that a child may have after being separated from their home. The grief and loss process along with effective strategies that caregivers can utilize when addressing these emotions and behaviors will also be covered. Caregivers will also practice effective strategies when talking to children about reunification with their biological parents along with strategies to minimize stressors. Presenter – Calvin Witcher October 7 – What is Active Parenting? (B or D-Rate) Parenting is the most important “job” a parent has and it is not easy. In this class parents will identify the characteristics of an "active" parent. Many parents are "reactive", waiting until the child does something wrong and then reacts. Being a parent means active involvement in their children's lives daily. The class will cover discipline, responsibility, and cooperation. Presenter – Juan Alvarez October 14 – Available Permanency Options- Foster Care/Adoption/Legal Guardianship (B, D, or F-Rate) This class will cover the importance and goals of maintaining permanency and stability for children while keeping the best interest of the child in out of home care. Parents will be able to identify the different permanency options and differentiate between Long-term Placement, Kinship, Legal Guardianship, and Adoption. Presenter – Christina Auer-Arriaga October 21 – Caring for a Child Who Has Been Sexually Abused (B, D, or F-Rate) This class is an overview of sexual abuse. Caregivers will identify what sexual abuse is, who the abusers are, and why many times sexual abuse is seen as a secret. Other topics covered include identifying the sexually abused child; the possible feelings of a child who has been sexually abused, behaviors or how feelings may be expressed; and how caregivers can help children/youth manage feelings and behaviors positively. Presenter – Lori Switanowski Continued on next page Los Nietos Community Center - Continued 9 In-Service (Renewal) October 28 – The Truth About Teen Dating & Violence (B, D, or F-Rate) In this class parents will identify domestic violence as well as key topics and strategies in addressing healthy relationships with their teens. Parents will also identify "red flag" warning signs of an abusive relationship as well as the dangers and harmful effects of being the victim of domestic violence. Resources on how and when to get help will also be covered. Presenter - Joseph Walker November 4 – All About Blended Families (B, D, or F-Rate) This class will provide the foster parents and relative caregivers with the opportunity to learn the family dynamics and structure of a blended family and how they can help foster children and biological children adjust to a new home. Caregivers will also explore the importance of race and culture within a bi-cultural family as well as techniques and resources that will help children gain a strong sense of racial and cultural identity by creating successful mutual respectful relationships. Presenter - Calvin Witcher November 11 – Preparing Youth to Live on Their Own: What Youth Wish They Knew (B, D, or F-Rate) Transitioning out into the real world can be difficult and confusing. This class will address the importance of youth being equipped with tools and skills necessary to become successful independent adults. Various areas in which youth indicated not being aware of will be emphasized along with practical techniques which they can implement every day to instill and reinforce these independent skills will be identified. Caregivers will also have the opportunity to directly hear from youth about their experiences. Presenter - Marisela Saenz & Marcelina Valenzuela November 18 – Healing Parents: Forming Healthy Attachments and Relationships (B, D, or F-Rate) This class will emphasize the value of loving and supportive relationships when it comes to helping children who have been wounded. In this class caregivers will develop practical techniques and ways of developing a child’s positive beliefs and establish trust by emphasizing respect, providing appropriate limits, consistent structure, and by being a positive role model. Presenter - Lori Switanowski Continued on next page Los Nietos Community Center - Continued 10 In-Service (Renewal) November 25 – It’s All About Communication: Effective Conflict Resolution (B, D, or F-Rate) The class will equip caregivers with tips and ideas on how to establish effective communication skills and how to become successful communicators. Caregivers will also apply effective ways on approaching and resolving family conflicts. Participants will practice viewing conflict as an opportunity for growth, cooperation/collaboration, and how teamwork strengthens family relationships. Presenter - Christina Auer-Arriiaga December 2 – What Every Parent Should be Aware of: The Red Flags of Possible Dangerous Issues (B, D, or F-Rate) This class will cover possible warning signs of teenage problems such as alcohol abuse, suicidal thinking, bullying, sexting, distracted driving, along with new and common teen trends that are dangerous and fatal. Caregivers will identify warning signs; possible causes for these behaviors, as well as ways to handle/intervene in these issues while helping teens grow healthy and safe. Presenter - Betsy Cisneros December 9 – Positive Discipline, Positive Parenting, Positive Attitude (B, D, or F-Rate) This class will offer parents effective and easy approaches that will help modify difficult/negative behaviors and attitudes in a positive way. Parents will identify the difference between attitude and behavior; possible causes as well as address their parenting styles and applying hands-on effective parenting techniques. Presenter - Catherine Meurer December 16 – Care, Respect, & Love: Caring for LGBTQ Youth (AB458) (B, D, or F-Rate) This class is designed to bring awareness to caregivers about the needs of LGTBQ youth and how to address them. Participants will understand how to provide a safe and caring environment for all youth needing the same support and guidance as they develop. The AB458 law, which prohibits any type of discrimination based on sexual identity in out-of-home care, will also be discussed. Presenter - Calvin Witcher December 23 – No Class Due to Holidays December 30 – No Class Due to Holidays Continued on next page Los Nietos Community Center - Continued In-Service (Renewal) 11 January 6 – Understanding Bullying (B, D, or F-Rate) This class will explore the types, effects, and signs of aggressive behavior and bullying. Participants will learn how to identify signs/traits that may indicate a child is possibly being bullied or bullying. Parents will also understand the importance of immediate intervention as well as appropriate resources and prevention techniques. Presenter – Christina Auer-Arriaga January 13 – Growing-Up Drug-Free (B, D, or F-Rate) Early prevention and talking to children about drugs is essential in growing-up drug-free. In this class parents will practice skills, methods, and techniques to effectively talk and teach children about substance abuse. Participants will identify possible root causes; effective prevention strategies when addressing specific substance abuse related behaviors of teens. Choices and consequences as well as the decision making process will also be emphasized. Presenter – Cristina Cota January 20 – The Effects of Abuse & Separation from Biological Parents: Parenting the Traumatized Child (B, D, or F-Rate) All children need and deserve a home that is safe. Unfortunately many children in out of home care have experienced severe trauma such as abuse, neglect, and separation. This class will cover the different types of abuse as well as the impact it has on the overall development and growth of a child. Caregivers will also identify the specific needs of a child who has been abused as well as the child’s feelings. Parenting techniques which caregivers can utilize while caring and supporting children, as well as trauma will be covered. Presenter – Lori Switanowski January 27- Taking Care of the Emotionally Exhausted Caregiver (B, D, or F-Rate) Dealing with challenging behaviors can be emotionally draining and stressful on both the child and parent. This class will focus on identifying challenging behaviors and the root causes. Caregivers will also identify strategies and techniques for coping with these challenging behaviors, practical ways of reducing parental stress to avoid burnout, and setting realistic expectations for changing these behaviors for both the parent and child. Presenter – Catherine Meurer In-Service (Renewal) Location: Olive Crest 17800 Woodruff Ave. Bellflower, CA 90706 Time: 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. Days: Once a month on Thursday 12 September 11 - Understanding Addiction and Recovery Process (B.D. or F-Rate) Many caretakers struggle with their interactions with birth parents that are using drugs and alcohol because of the missed visits, false promises made to the children and inappropriate behaviors. This class will help explain the addiction and recovery process. Presenter – Maria Dolores Alvidrez October 9 - Helping Children Cope with Worries and Fears (B.D. or F-Rate) This class will concentrate on common fears and worries that children in care often experience. During this class caregivers will be able to apply effective techniques which can help children minimize uncomfortable situations and unpleasant thoughts. Presenter – Catherine Meurer November 13 – Sexually Active Youth/Teen Pregnancy Prevention (B.D. or F-Rate) This class will discuss ways on how to talk to teens about sex and the possible consequences associated with risky behavior. Techniques on helping youth recognize risky behaviors vs. healthy behaviors as well as encouraging responsible and healthy choices will also be presented. Presenter - Maribel Romero December 11 - Suicide Awareness (B.D. or F-Rate) Suicide is unfortunately one of the top leading causes of death among 15-24 year olds. This class will assist parents in identifying suicide warning signs as well as develop protective factors. Parents will also identify “high risk” factors, elements for assessing suicide, how to address this crisis, and available support/ professional services. Presenter – Lori Switanowski January 8 - Overview of Child Protection Services (B.D.F-Rate) This class will discuss the importance of understanding how the system works and how to utilize available resources in order to meet the needs of the child in care. The role of Child Protection Services and the Courts as well as how to work cooperatively with social workers and the system will be covered. Presenter – Christina Auer-Arriaga 13 In-Service (Renewal) Location: Rio Hondo College Main Campus 3600 Workman Mill Rd Whittier, CA 90601 Room A208 Administration Building 2nd floor Time: 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Day: Once a month on Saturday September 20 - True Parenting ―True Colors‖ (B, D, or F-Rate) In this class parents will discover their own and their child’s true colors. Parents will also identify their true parenting style and enhance their parenting and communication skills based on these findings. Parents will also utilize fun family activities that foster deeper family ties and a harmonious home. Presenter – Deborah Patrice Brown October 4 - Reasonable and Prudent Parenting Standard & Allegation Prevention (B, D, or F-Rate) In this class caregivers will identify what Prudent Parenting is and how to make reasonable decisions and sensible parental decisions that maintain a child’s health, safety and best interests. Participation in activities such as ageappropriate extra-curricular, enrichment, and social outings will be discussed. This class will also cover allegation prevention as well as the process. Presenter – Calvin Witcher November 8 - Effective Communication: Successful Visitations & Working with Birth Parents Towards Reunification (B, D, or F-Rate) Visitation with biological parents can trigger many feelings, emotions, and behaviors. Caregivers will identify possible issues as well as explore on ways to help children cope with these situations. Effective communication skills with birth parents will also be addressed. The possibility of reunification will also be discuss as well as ways that caregivers can provide stability while preparing the child/children for this possibility. Presenter - To be Determined Continued on next page Rio Hondo College Main Campus - Continued 14 In-Service (Renewal) December 6 - Caring for Young Adults AB12: PostSecondary Education Options & Opportunities for Foster Youth (B, D, or F-Rate) Caregivers will identify what the AB12 law is and identify ways to support and prepare young adults under their care for a successful future. Participants will discover important data about youth, eligibility requirements, and higher educational options/services will be explored. Presenter – Yajayra Tovar January 24 Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (B, D, or F-Rate) The effect of alcohol during pregnancy has a lifelong consequence after birth. This class will discuss the physical and mental characteristics of babies born with FAS or may have in the future. The class will offer participants resources that are available to assist the child. Presenter – Christina Auer-Arriaga 15 In-Service (Bi-Lingual) Location: Community Resource Center 10750 Laurel Ave. Whittier, CA 90605 Time: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Days: Once a month on Wednesday September 17 – Helping Your Children With Their Frustrations (B or D-Rate) In this class parents will identify and incorporate easy yet essential parenting tips and techniques; which will result in happier and better behaved children with minimal frustrations and stress. Presenter – Calvin Witcher October 15 - Stages Not Ages (B, D, W, F-Rate) During this class participants will learn new tips and techniques for building their children's social, emotional, physical and intellectual skills. Also discussed will be the different stages children experience throughout their growth and development and how certain behaviors are appropriate at different stages. Child development theories will also be discussed. Presenter – Catherine Meurer November 19 - Taming the Homework Monster (B or D-Rate) Would you like to be better at helping your children with their homework? We know that most parents feel they have battled the homework monster at some point in their children’s school career. Parents will discover various tips on how to help our children with homework as well as how to instill responsibility, prioritizing, and organization. Presenter – Calvin Witcher December 10 - Coping with Holiday Stress (B, D or F-Rate) The holidays are supposed to be a happy time for everyone but can also be stressful for the whole family. This class will cover family values, traditions, stress management, as well as coping skills. Parents will gain techniques and tips on how to help our children and ourselves enjoy family time. Presenter – Maria Dolores Alvidrez January 21 - About Family Violence & It’s Effects (B, D or F-Rate) This class will discuss the emotional and behavioral issues faced by children with a history of domestic violence. Parents will be able to be more aware of the emotions children feel and how violent behaviors impact children’s lives forever. Presenter - Hector de Paz 16 Clases de Renovación (Bi-Lingual) Sitio: Community Resource Center 10750 Laurel Ave. Whittier, CA 90605 Horario: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Días: Miércoles 17 de Septiembre - Ayudando a Sus Hijos con Sus Frustraciones En esta clase los padres identificaran e incorporaran fácil consejos y técnicas de crianza de los hijos; que resultara en mejor comportamiento y niños más felices sin frustraciones y estrés mínimas. 15 de Octubre - Las Etapas del Crecimiento y Desarrollo del Niño Durante esta clase los participantes aprenderán nuevos consejos y técnicas para el desarrollo de habilidades sociales, emocionales, físicas e intelectuales de sus hijos. Las diferentes etapas durante el crecimiento y desarrollo tal cómo ciertas conductas serán apropiadas. También se analizarán las teorías del desarrollo del niño. 19 de Noviembre - Ayuda con Las Tareas Escolares ¿Te gustaría ser mejor en ayudar a sus hijos con sus tareas? Sabemos que la mayoría de los padres sienten que han tenido dificultades con la tarea en algún momento de la carrera escolar de sus hijos. Esta clase equipara a padres con varios consejos como ayudar a sus hijos con la tarea tal como inculcar la responsabilidad, como priorizar y organizar. 10 de Diciembre - Afrontar el Estrés Durante los Días Festivos Los días festivos se supone que es un momento feliz para todos, pero también puede ser estresante para toda la familia. Esta clase cubrirá los valores familiares, tradiciones, manejo del estrés, así como habilidades de afrontamiento. Los padres adquirirán técnicas y consejos sobre cómo ayudar a nuestros hijos y a nosotros mismos disfrutar mas de la familia. 21 de Enero - Acerca de la Violencia Familiar En esta clase se exploraran las problemas emocionales y de comportamiento que se enfrentan los niños con un historial de violencia doméstica.
