ZILVER SAM DE VOCHT structural engineer: Filip Van de Voorde (UTIL) www.samenwerk.eu completion date: 2009 area | superficie: 77 m2 location: Rijmenam, Belgium photo©Ellen De Vocht photography A PARCEL WITH AN OLD FARM CLOSE TO THE VILLAGE CENTER OF RIJMENAM WAS SPLIT UP IN TWO PARCELS AND SOLD IN THE 80ÊS. THE CLIENTS RAISED THEIR DAUGHTERS IN ONE PART OF THE FARMHOUSE WHILE THE OTHER PART WAS USED BY A BRUSSELS FAMILY AS A SUMMER RESIDENCE. UNA PARCELA CON UNA VIEJA GRANJA, CERCA AL CENTRO DEL MUNICIPIO DE RIJMENAM, FUE DIVIDIDA EN DOS PARCELAS Y VENDIDA EN LOS AÑOS 80. LOS CLIENTES FORMARON FAMILIA EN UNA PARTE DE LA GRANJA, MIENTRAS QUE LA OTRA PARTE FUE HABITADA POR UNA FAMILIA DE BRUSELAS COMO RESIDENCIA DE VERANO. In 2006 the parcel with the summer residence was for sale and the clients decided to buy it in order to optimise the house they had already adjusted to their changing needs already several times. As soon as the sale was arranged, the pine trees on the limit of the terrain were immediately cleared and the back garden received evening sun again. The front of the house, looking street wards, faces south. The clients wanted to have more sun in their living quarters, on the southwest side, as well as more contact with the extended back garden. A good decision as it will reduce the heating systems usage in winter. The added garage had changed function throughout the years and had now become a storage room, pushing the family cars outside. The front door was permanently locked since the entrance to the master bedroom was situated next to it. Visitors had gotten used to enter the house through the kitchen door at the back of the house. The adjacent weekend house of poor quality construction and lighting was demolished and the typical section of a Belgium farmhouse became visible again. In this façade, a new window was placed in order to let the evening light enter on the living room. A new entrance to the house, as well as a carport were organised on the new parcel. Between them was placed a winter garden, overlooking the back garden facing north and receiving sun light throughout the day without problems with privacy. This winter garden acts as a multifunctional inner-outer space, which visually pulls the garden into the house. Elevations before remodelling. Alzados antes de la rehabilitación. The south façade facing the street is built with a 3,5 meter high masonry wall and thus repeating the material of the old farmhouse. A large window is cut out on the stone wall in order to optimize the entrance of sunlight. This window frames the clouds. A fireplace is placed directly on the floor and finished with slate stone. Three large vertical windows in afrormosia wood allow one to look at the tops of the oak trees in the back garden. They are hung on a Douglas Fir structure, which remains visible on the inside of the winter garden and supports the wooden roof structure. The same principle is repeated at the little entrance ÂpavilionÊ. Oak flooring folds up on both sides to make up for low panelling, which is also repeated above the corner doors connecting the winter garden to the carport. The same vertical panelling is used on the outside, but this time with afrormosia wood. From the inside, the new entrance to the house is visually a part of the winter garden. When opening the front door, visitors cannot look into the privacy of the winter garden. The front door acts as a visual barrier. The lower ceiling of the pavilion strengthens the sensation of height of the winter garden and passage function to the existing house. Elevations after remodelling. Alzados después de la rehabilitación.
