Holy Thursday celebrates the institution of the Eucharist as the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ and the institution of the Sacrament of the Priesthood. During the Last Supper, Jesus offers Himself as the Passover sacrifice, the sacrificial lamb, and teaches that every ordained priest is to follow the same sacrifice in the exact same way. Christ also bids farewell to His followers and prophesizes that one of them will betray Him and hand Him over to the Roman soldiers, and that one would deny Him three times. During the night, after sundown – because Passover begins at sundown - The Holy Thursday Liturgy takes place, marking the end of Lent and the beginning of the Sacred “Triduum,” (three days) of Holy Week. These days are the three holiest days in the Catholic Church. This Mass stresses the importance Jesus puts on humility of service, and the need for cleansing with water a symbol of baptism. Also emphasized are the critical importance of the Eucharist and the sacrifice of Christ’s Body, which is the consecrated Host. At the conclusion of Mass, the faithful are invited to continue Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at a side altar. After Holy Thursday , no Mass is celebrated again anywhere in the world until the Easter Vigil (Saturday night) celebrates and proclaims the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Good Friday is a day of strict fast and abstinence (obligatory) Anyone 14 years of age and over must abstain from eating meat (meat is considered to be the flesh and organs of mammals and fowl) also any soups or gravies made from meat. Fasting is required for all from 18 to 59 to reduce the amount eaten on a normal day. The church defines this as one main meal and two smaller meals which if added together would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Do not break the fast by eating or drinking between meals except for water. Those who are dispensed from fast and abstinence are the sick, the frail, pregnant or nursing women, manual laborers according to their need. PLEASE NOTE The monthly devotion in April to Our Lady of Fatima will be on APRIL 10TH @7:00p.m. Rosary, Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and candlelight procession. The date change is only for the month of April 4 Palm Sunday Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this, ‘The Lord needs them.’ And he will send them immediately. This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, “Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!” When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, “Who is this?” The crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.” Today we commemorate Christ’s entry into Jerusalem for the completion of the Paschal Mystery. The Palm Sunday procession is formed of Christians who, in the “fullness of faith,” make their own the gesture of the Jews and endow it with it’s full significance. Following the Jews’ example we proclaim Christ as a Victor…Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord. But by our faith we know, as they did not, all that His triumph stands for. He is the Messiah, the Son of David and the Son of God. He is the sign of contradiction, acclaimed by some and reviled by others. Sent to this world to wrest us from sin and the power of Satan, He underwent His Passion, the punishment for our sins, but issues forth triumphant from the tomb, the victor over death, making our peace with God and taking us with Him into the kingdom of His Father in heaven. 5 Men’s Bible Study SB 128 would legalize physician– assisted suicide in California.
