faithful the treasures of God’s word, but also of bringing about an
encounter with Christ, the living word of God”.... It opens with the
reading (lectio) of a text, which leads to a desire to understand its true
content: what does the biblical text say in itself? Without this, there
is always a risk that the text will become a pretext for never moving
beyond our own ideas. Next comes meditation (meditatio), which
asks: what does the biblical text say to us? ... Following this comes
prayer (oratio), which asks the question: what do we say to the Lord
in response to his word? Prayer, as petition, intercession, thanksgiving and praise, is the primary way by which the word transforms us.

BAPTISM INTO JESUS’ PASSION

— Jerusalem Catechesis
You were led down to
the font of holy baptism just as Christ was taken down
from the cross and placed in the tomb which is before
your eyes. Each of you was asked, “Do you believe
in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the
Holy Spirit?” You made the profession of faith that
brings salvation, you were plunged into the water, and
three times you rose again. This symbolised the three
days Christ spent in the tomb.
As our Saviour spent three days and three
nights in the depths of the earth, so your first rising
from the water represented the first day and your first
immersion represented the first night. At night a man
cannot see, but in the day he walks in the light. So
when you were immersed in the water it was like
night for you and you could not see, but when you
rose again it was like coming into broad daylight. In
the same instant you died and were born again; the
saving water was both your tomb and your mother.
Solomon’s phrase in another context is very
apposite here. He spoke of a time to give birth, and
a time to die. For you, however, it was the reverse: a
time to die, and a time to be born, although in fact
both events took place at the same time and your birth
was simultaneous with your death.
This is something amazing and unheard of! It
was not we who actually died, were buried and rose
again. We only did these things symbolically, but we
have been saved in actual fact. It is Christ who was
crucified, who was buried and who rose again, and all
this has been attributed to us. We share in his sufferings symbolically and gain salvation in reality. What
boundless love for men! Christ’s undefiled hands were
pierced by the nails; he suffered the pain. I experience
no pain, no anguish, yet by the share that I have in his
sufferings he freely grants me salvation.
Let no one imagine that baptism consists only
in the forgiveness of sins and in the grace of adoption.
Our baptism is not like the baptism of John, which
conferred only the forgiveness of sins. We know perfectly well that baptism, besides washing away our
sins and bringing us the gift of the Holy Spirit, is a
symbol of the sufferings of Christ. This is why Paul
exclaims: Do you not know that when we were baptized into Christ Jesus we were, by that very action,
sharing in his death? By baptism we went with him
into the tomb.

THE ANOINTING WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT
When we were baptized into Christ and
clothed ourselves in him, we were transformed into
the likeness of the Son of God. Having destined us to
be his adopted sons, God gave us a likeness to Christ
in his glory, and living as we do in communion with
Christ, God’s anointed, we ourselves are rightly called
“the anointed ones.” When he said: Do not touch my
anointed ones, God was speaking of us.
We became “the anointed ones” when we received the sign of the Holy Spirit. Indeed, everything
took place in us by means of images, because we ourselves are images of Christ. Christ bathed in the river
Jordan, imparting to its waters the fragrance of his
divinity, and when he came up from them the Holy
Spirit descended upon him, like resting upon like. So
we also, after coming up from the sacred waters of
baptism, were anointed with chrism, which signifies
the Holy Spirit, by whom Christ was anointed and of
whom blessed Isaiah prophesied in the name of the
Lord: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he
has anointed me. He has sent me to preach good news
to the poor.
Christ’s anointing was not by human hands,
nor was it with ordinary oil. On the contrary, having
destined him to be the Saviour of the whole world, the
Father himself anointed him with the Holy Spirit. The
words of Peter bear witness to this: Jesus of Nazareth,
whom God anointed with the Holy Spirit. And David
the prophet proclaimed: Your throne, O God, shall
endure for ever; your royal sceptre is a sceptre of justice. You have loved righteousness and hated iniquity;
therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the
oil of gladness above all your fellows.
The oil of gladness with which Christ was
anointed was a spiritual oil; it was in fact the Holy
Spirit himself, who is called the oil of gladness because he is the source of spiritual joy. But we too have
been anointed with oil, and by this anointing we have
entered into fellowship with Christ and have received
a share in his life. Beware of thinking that this holy
oil is simply ordinary oil and nothing else. After the
invocation of the Spirit it is no longer ordinary oil but
the gift of Christ, and by the presence of his divinity
it becomes the instrument through which we receive
the Holy Spirit. While symbolically, on our foreheads
and senses, our bodies are anointed with this oil that
we see, our souls are sanctified by the holy and lifegiving Spirit.

Fuisteis conducidos a la
santa piscina del divino bautismo, como Cristo desde
la cruz fue llevado al sepulcro.
Y se os preguntó a cada uno si creíais en el nom
bre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo. Después
de haber confesado esta fe salvadora, se os sumergió
por tres veces en el agua y otras tantas fuisteis sacados
de la misma: con ello significasteis, en imagen y símbolo, los tres días de la sepultura de Cristo.
Pues así como nuestro Salvador pasó en el seno
de la tierra tres días y tres noches, de la misma manera
vosotros habéis imitado con vuestra primera emersión el primer día que Cristo estuvo en la tierra, y, con
vuestra inmersión, la primera noche. Porque como el
que anda durante el día lo percibe todo, del mismo
modo en vuestra inmersión, como si fuera de noche,
no pudisteis ver nada; en cambio al emerger os pareció encontraros en pleno día; y en un mismo momento os encontrasteis muertos y nacidos, y aquella agua
salvadora os sirvió a la vez de sepulcro y de madre.
Por eso os cuadra admirablemente lo que dijo
Salomón, a propósito de otras cosas: Tiempo de nacer,
tiempo de morir; pero a vosotros os pasó esto en orden
inverso: tuvisteis un tiempo de morir y un tiempo de
nacer, aunque en realidad un mismo instante os dio
ambas cosas, y vuestro nacimiento se realizó junto
con vuestra muerte.
¡Oh maravilla nueva e inaudita! No hemos
muerto ni hemos sido sepultados, ni hemos resucitado después de crucificados, en el sentido material de
estas expresiones, pero, al imitar estas realidades en
imagen hemos obtenido así la salvación verdadera.
Cristo sí que fue realmente crucificado y su
cuerpo fue realmente sepultado y realmente resucitó;
a nosotros, en cambio, nos ha sido dado, por gracia,
que, imitando lo que él padeció con la realidad de estas acciones, alcancemos de verdad la salvación.
¡Oh exuberante amor para con los hombres!
Cristo fue el que recibió los clavos en sus inmaculadas manos y pies, sufriendo grandes dolores, y a mí,
sin experimentar ningún dolor ni ninguna angustia, se
me dio la salvación por la comunión de sus dolores.
No piense nadie, pues, que el Bautismo fue
dado solamente por el perdón de los pecados y para
alcanzar la gracia de la adopción, como en el caso
del bautismo de Juan, que confería sólo el perdón de
los pecados; nuestro bautismo, como bien sabemos,
además de limpiarnos del pecado y darnos el don del
Espíritu es también tipo y expresión de la Pasión de
Cristo. Por eso Pablo decía: ¿Es que no sabéis que los
que por el bautismo nos incorporamos a Cristo Jesús
fuimos incorporados a su muerte? Por el bautismo
fuimos sepultados con él en la muerte.

to, habéis sido hechos semejantes al Hijo de Dios.
Porque Dios nos predestinó para la adopción nos hizo
conformes al cuerpo glorioso de Cristo. Hechos, por
tanto, partícipes de Cristo (que significa Ungido), con
toda razón os llamáis ungidos; y Dios mismo dijo de
vosotros: No toquéis a mis ungidos.
Fuisteis convertidos en Cristo al recibir el an
ticipo del Espíritu Santo: pues con relación a vosotros
todo se realizó en símbolo e imagen; en definitiva,
sois imágenes de Cristo.
Por cierto que él, cuando fue bautizado en el
río Jordán, comunicó a las aguas el fragante perfume
de su divinidad y, al salir de ellas, el Espíritu Santo
descendió substancialmente sobre el como un igual
sobre su igual.
Igualmente vosotros, después que subisteis de
la piscina, recibisteis el crisma, signo de aquel mismo
Espíritu Santo con el que Cristo fue ungido. De este
Espíritu dice el profeta Isaías en una profecía relativa
a sí mismo, pero en cuanto que representaba al Señor:
el Espíritu del Señor está sobre mí, porque el Señor
me ha ungido; me ha enviado para dar la buena noticia a los que sufren.
Cristo, en efecto, no fue ungido por los hom
bres ni su unción se hizo con óleo o ungüento material, sino que fue el Padre quien lo ungió al constituirlo
Salvador del mundo, y su unción fue el Espíritu Santo
tal como dice San Pedro: Jesús de Nazaret, ungido por
Dios con la fuerza del Espíritu Santo, y anuncia también el profeta David: Tu trono, oh Dios, permanece
para siempre; cetro de rectitud es tu cetro real. Has
amado la justicia y odiado la impiedad: por eso el Señor, tu Dios, te ha ungido con aceite de júbilo entre
todos tus compañeros.
Cristo fue ungido con el óleo espiritual de la
alegría, es decir, con el Espíritu Santo, que se llama
aceite de júbilo, porque es el autor y la fuente de toda
alegría espiritual, pero vosotros, al ser ungidos con
ungüento material, habéis sido hechos partícipes y
consortes del mismo Cristo.
Por lo demás no se te ocurra pensar que se trata
de un simple y común ungüento. Pues, de la misma
manera que, después de la invocación del Espíritu
Santo, el pan de la Eucaristía no es ya un simple pan,
sino el cuerpo de Cristo, así aquel sagrado aceite,
después de que ha sido invocado el Espíritu en la
oración consecratoria, no es ya un simple aceite ni un
ungüento común, sino el don de Cristo y fuerza del
Espíritu Santo, ya que realiza, por la presencia de la
divinidad, aquello que significa. Por eso, este ungüento se derrama simbólicamente sobre la frente y los
demás sentidos, para que mientras se unge el cuerpo
con un aceite visible, el alma quede santificada por el
Santo y vivificante Espíritu.

87. ... la lectio divina, que es verdaderamente «capaz de
abrir al fiel no sólo el tesoro de la Palabra de Dios sino también de
crear el encuentro con Cristo, Palabra divina y viviente» Quisiera
recordar aquí brevemente cuáles son los pasos fundamentales: se
comienza con la lectura (lectio) del texto, que suscita la cuestión
sobre el conocimiento de su contenido auténtico: ¿Qué dice el
texto bíblico en sí mismo? Sin este momento, se corre el riesgo de
que el texto se convierta sólo en un pretexto para no salir nunca de
nuestros pensamientos. Sigue después la meditación (meditatio)
en la que la cuestión es: ¿Qué nos dice el texto bíblico a nosotros?
Aquí, cada uno personalmente, pero también comunitariamente,
debe dejarse interpelar y examinar, pues no se trata ya de considerar palabras pronunciadas en el pasado, sino en el presente. Se
llega sucesivamente al momento de la oración (oratio), que supone
la pregunta: ¿Qué decimos nosotros al Señor como respuesta a su
Palabra? La oración como petición, intercesión, agradecimiento
y alabanza, es el primer modo con el que la Palabra nos cambia.
Por último, la lectio divina concluye con la contemplación (contemplatio), durante la cual aceptamos como don de Dios su propia
mirada al juzgar la realidad, y nos preguntamos: ¿Qué conversión
de la mente, del corazón y de la vida nos pide el Señor?
