Durante años vivió feliz sin ningún rival en el horizonte, cosa que cambió con la llegada del Lamborghini Aventador 750 Roadster SuperVeloce. Apenas podemos esperar para ver con qué sorpresas responden en McLaren a este reto. Por Pablo Olavarrieta 108 ROBB REPORT MÉXICO OC T UBR E 2 01 5 ara cualquiera que conozca un poco de autos, McLaren es un nombre que habla de serias cualidades deportivas, lo cual tiene toda la lógica del mundo si pensamos que esta firma es un fabricante de autos de carreras que hace no mucho tiempo decidió aplicar su know-how a sus ahora varios superdeportivos. Uno de los más conocidos es el 650S, cuya versión convertible no presenta casi ningún cambio respecto del coupé. Esto se debe a que utiliza el mismo chasis monocelda de fibra de carbono que su hermano techado, el cual no requiere ningún refuerzo estructural para mantener la rigidez al momento de quitar el techo. De hecho, McLaren afirma que tiene el mismo comportamiento, sin ninguna pérdida notoria en el desempeño. Y le creemos, pues logró que la inclusión del techo duro retráctil aumenta- ra el peso en sólo 44 kilogramos. El interior del 650S Spider le resultará familiar a todos aquellos que conozcan el coupé, con fibra de carbono y piel del Alcántara en donde quiera que pongas la mirada. Gracias a que es posible controlar el sistema de infotenimiento desde la pantalla vertical en la consola central, ésta tiene pocos botones, lo cual ayuda a crear una sensación más limpia en el habitáculo. En el panel de instrumentos, por su parte, sobresale el tacómetro central –como debe ser en un deportivo-, el cual está rodeado por dos pantallas que te dan el resto de información. Los cambios respecto al coupé son dos. El primero es que cuando el techo está cerrado, el espacio donde se guarda se convierte en un lugar extra para almacenar cosas; el segundo, que la visibilidad trasera empeoró un poco debido a que la estructura para guardar el techo ocupa el lugar de las ahora inexistentes ventanas traseras, reduciendo el campo de visión. Pero hablemos de lo realmente importante, el responsable de toda la diversión y emoción: el motor. El V8 twin-turbo está ubicado en una posición central, y eroga la nada despreciable cantidad de 640 HP; lo cual, sumado a una rapidísima transmisión de doble embrague y 7 cambios que envían la potencia al eje trasero, convierte a este descapotable en un generador de sonrisas sin importar si decides ir a cielo abierto o con el techo cerrado. Es tan divertido que incluso resulta asombroso al momento de frenar, gracias a la impresionante fuerza de los frenos de discos carbono-cerámicos y a que el alerón trasero se levanta, como en un avión, para colocarse en forma vertical cuando pisas a fondo el pedal de freno. D uffy london (www.duffylondon.com) se ha hecho de un nombre gracias a sus notables diseños de mobiliario que, de alguna manera, desafían a la gravedad: la mesa sostenida por globos llamada Up Table, la Flying Carpet Table que, cual alfombra voladora, se cierne sobre la tierra misteriosamente, además de la Swing Table o la Shadow Chair. Para variar un poco, este otoño Duffy desvió su mirada de las alturas para dirigirla a las profundidades del océano, como inspiración de su espectacular nueva mesa de centro Abyss Table (5 800 libras esterlinas), que introduce la majestuosidad del gran azul al interiorismo y, que de paso, brinda una experiencia totalmente nueva al ritual de beber una taza de café. Quise usar este efecto para replicar una auténtica pieza del fondo del mar. Como si un poder mítico hubiera cortado un rectángulo perfecto directo de la corteza de la Tierra para usarlo como adorno personal.” El equipo de diseño pasó un año desarrollando la mesa en su estudio de Londres. Experimentó con cristal esculpido, plexiglás y madera, dispuestos como una representación en 3D de un mapa geológico, hasta que pudieron recrear un poco del abismo hipnótico que había capturado la imaginación de Duffy. —alfredo sÁnchez m. Siempre hay algo de grosella, de cereza negra, de ciruela en los vinos de esta uva; a veces, de menta, de pimiento. Es una uva de piel gruesa, y esa piel le ayuda a dar vinos de potentes taninos, a los que siempre les viene bien un tiempo de reposo para redondearse, apaciguarse. Los vinos Cabernet suelen tener una saludable esperanza de vida. Si a eso le añadimos un trabajo en bodega arduo y sobre todo paciente, sin prisas, el vino tenderá a la franca longevidad. Son los vinos de los que hablaban nuestros ancestros. “Vinos de guarda”, decían. “Vinos que mejoran con el tiempo”, decían. Vinos para los que nuestra vida acelerada y sin eje parece no tener un espacio en la agenda inmanejable. Vinos como el Casa Grande Cabernet Sauvignon de Casa Madero. El viñedo está en el valle de Parras, y éste en el Desierto de Chihuahua, que, además de ese estado, abarca buena parte de Coahuila, algo de Nuevo México, Texas y Arizona. Es un 94 ROB B REPORT. Nariz: Compleja y elegante, con aromas de cacao, cereza negra, frambuesa, fresa y madera. Resaltan las notas ahumadas, a pimienta negra y pimiento verde. Gusto: Con taninos envolventes y de acidez marcada. La madera de la barrica está presente en cada trago. Maridaje: Atún sellado, gorditas de chicharrón y postres con chocolate. desierto vastísimo, pero no avaro. “Hay agua —dice Francisco Rodríguez, enólogo de Casa Madero—. Sólo es cuestión de encontrarla.” Y, como desierto que es, este valle somete a sus vides a trabajos forzados. Cada planta que crece aquí debe luchar para crecer, y en ese esfuerzo imparte poder a sus frutos, y éstos a sus jugos y sus vinos. Vinos concentrados, potentes, complejos. (Una norma vitivinícola: la concentración de un vino es directamente proporcional al esfuerzo que haya hecho la vid para dar fruto, que a su vez es inversamente proporcional a la fertilidad del suelo y la cantidad de agua disponible para la planta.) De nuevo: vinos como el Casa Grande Cabernet. En nariz, primero, frambuesa, cereza negra, zarzamora, pimiento verde; luego cacao, madera, vainilla, humo, nuez moscada —aromas complejísimos provenientes de una crianza de 24 meses en barricas nuevas—. En boca: taninos envolventes, redondos, finos, una acidez marcada que le da una frescura bienvenida. Un final largo, profundo, inolvidable como un beso de despedida.
