Learners will know vocabulary relevant to social relations, including home life. Subject(s): Pre-A/P Spanish I Educator: Sra. Sandra Nolte Grade Level: 8th Enduring Understandings: I. COMMUNICATION Effective communication requires purposeful application of vocabulary and structure. Certain ideas may be expressed with more clarity in a language other than one's own. II. CULTURES A culture's products and practices are influenced by its underlying perspectives. Each culture has unique characteristics and values. III. CONNECTIONS Study of another language provides access to perspectives and knowledge that can only be gained through the target language and culture. IV. COMPARISONS Deeper insights into the nature of language and culture are achieved through the study of another language. Studying another language and culture offers insights into one's own. V. COMMUNITIES Learning a language connects people to the world. Learning a language is a lifelong process. ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: Science & Technology How does technology help me to communicate? Contemporary Life How is life influenced by the things we have, what we do and how we think? Why is life similar and yet different for a person of my age in other places and cultures? Personal & Public Identities How is my life a mirror of my culture? How does what people do and how they think tell you about who they are? Families & Communities How are communities defined in different cultures? How is friendship defined, and what does the word "friend" mean to me? TEKS: I. COMMUNICATION 1.1 Student engages in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions and express opinions. 1.2 Students understand and interpret spoken language on a variety of topics. 1.3 Students present information, concepts and ideas to an audience of readers on a variety of topics. II. CULTURES 2.1 Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices & perspectives of the culture studied. III. CONNECTIONS 3.2 Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through the foreign language and its culture. IV. COMPARISONS 4.1 Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of the language studied and their own. 4.2 Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own. V. COMMUNITIES 5.1 Students use the language both within and beyond the school setting.
