Parkland Community! We have had an exciting school year, and are starting to plan for next year. However, we must first thank all of the parents, students, family members and Parkland staff that have supported the Parkland PTSA efforts over this school year! We called on you to help fight for funding for
Parkland and the Middle School Magnet Consortium (MSMC), and the response has been tremendous.
Let’s build on this momentum to continue to strengthen our PTSA!
As the school year draws to a close and we look ahead to the summer, it’s time to help our Parkland
PTSA plan for next school year. We need your help going forward—whether you will run for an executive
committee position or volunteer for one event. We need EVERY Parkland community member to volunteer!
Volunteer for a position on the Parkland PTSA executive board or chair a committee. Contact
Cecily Adams for nominations.
Write and call the MC County Council and the MC School Board to continue to express your
support for full funding for MCPS, the MSMC and Parkland.
Whether your child is already attending Parkland or planning to attend in the fall, attend the
June 8th PTSA meeting to help plan for next school year and to vote for next year’s executive
committee.

¡Comunidad de Parkland! Hemos tenido un año escolar emocionante, y estamos comenzando a planificar para el próximo
año. Sin embargo, ¡Primero tenemos que agradecer a todos los padres, estudiantes, miembros de la familia y el personal

Dear Parkland Community:
Isn’t it amazing how the year is flying by?
What a wonderful year this has been getting to know you and your children. Every
day your children make me laugh and it is
exciting seeing them grow and learn. They
have an incredible sense of humor and
outlook on life. We are spoiled to have
them at Parkland with their vibrant personalities.
On behalf of the entire staff, I was so proud to see our
students work so hard during MSA testing. It was two grueling
weeks, but the students were diligent in their work. We even
had days when there was one hundred percent grade level attendance. Thank you to all the parents who got our students here
on time and gave them pep talks to do well on the MSA tests. I
hope and pray that we made Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) again.
Our students have knocked it out of the park recently
with a variety of awards. Many students showed off their amazing poetry skills at the dramatic arts festival. Then the Science
Expo had over 200 visitors as our students displayed their milestone’s projects. Finally, congratulations to the students who
represented Parkland at the Montgomery County Science Fair.
We had twenty students who won awards at this event, some
with projects I can’t even pronounce. Even our parents and partners have won awards. Mr. Enright was recognized by MCPS for
one of the five best school websites. And Colonel Knowles, who
supervises our school division of the civil air patrol, was promoted to chief commander of the entire state of Maryland. Way
to go Mr. Enright and Colonel Knowles!
May is a crazy month. From dances to field trips to
tests, the month is non stop. We gave each student a special
calendar that listed all the events we have till the end of the
school year. Please review the calendar with your child. In addition, we have our second book fair of the school year from May
13th through May 20th. We still need parent volunteers. Please
contact Ms. On if you can assist. I witnessed first hand so many
parents helping out with the honor roll celebrations. You always
come through for us.
After the last Academic Achievement Night, parents
communicated the desire to receive the exam review materials
earlier than they were given out for the fall semester. As a result, we have required staff to distribute all exam packets by May
24th. This should provide children who are taking a final high
school exam or a semester cumulative summative two full weeks
to review the material before their final exam.
Summer school is from July 6th through July 30th.
Please reserve that time for us as we will have an extensive summer program including multiple theme camps. Altogether, we
have fourteen camps to choose from that cost only 75$. Scholarships are available for those needing financial assistance. For
more information , please email Ms. Blaney, our magnet coordinator or review the forms online at our website.

Estimada Comunidad de Parkland:
¿No es asombroso cómo el año está
volando? ¡Qué maravilloso año por
conocer a ustedes y a sus hijos. Todos los días sus hijos me hacen reír, y
es emocionante verlos crecer y aprender. Ellos tienen un increíble sentido
del humor y actitud ante la vida con
sus personalidades vibrantes.
En nombre de todos en el conjunto,
estábamos orgullosos ver a nuestros
estudiantes cuando trabajan tan duro durante la prueba de
MSA. Fue dos semanas agotadoras, pero los estudiantes fueron diligentes en su trabajo. Incluso hubo días en que había
cien por ciento de asistencia a nivel de grado. ¡Gracias a todos

socios han ganado premios. El Sr. Enright fue reconocido por

I need you. We need your help! And, the Parkland Magnet Middle School (Parkland MS)

I am currently a 6th grader and have learned so much here at Parkland MS already. But, I
can easily forget some of these things I learned. I will not forget the rigorous science and
technology classes I am taking at Parkland however. The Parkland name and desire to do
Astronomy, Engineering, and Robotics will stay with me forever. It just reminds me of Albert
Einstein who once said, “Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has
learned in school.” I know that most Parkland parents and students feel this way. So, write

I do want to tell you that I along with Tanner Williams (8th grader & SGA president) and
Christina McCann (7th grader & SGA secretary) testified in front of the BOE back in January
this year to maintain our magnet program at Parkland MS. And then, a bunch of 6th graders
(Sareana Kimia, Brandon Washington, Markos Afework, Lauren Queen) along with other
Parkland students and other Parkland community members testified in front of the Montgomery County Council on April 7 for the same reason. We need to keep advocating for
Parkland MS since tough times call for even more action. I believe in the words of Albert
Einstein, “Human beings must have action; and they will make it if they cannot
find it.” We, as Parkland community, need

ESTRATEGIAS PARA LOS PADRES PARA USAR
CON SUS NIÑOS
Los años cuando nuestros hijos están en la escuela intermedia a veces pueden ser un
difícil para los padres y niños.
La Parenting Encouragement Program (PEP) en Kensignton, MD es una organización
para padres, maestros y otras personas queienes quieran abordar de manera constructiva con los niños y adolescentes. PEP se dedica a la creación y el fortalecimiento
de las relaciones sanas, armoniosas entre adultos y niños en el hogar o en el aula. Si

BECOME A PILOT FAMILY DAY AND
AVIATION DISPLAY
Save June 19 for the Smithsonian’s National Air and
Space Museum's most popular summer event at the
Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA near
Washington Dulles International Airport. Enjoy educational activities and an outdoor aviation display
with dozens of visiting vintage, recreational, military,
and homebuilt aircraft. Talk to pilots and find out
what skills are needed to fly. Inside the Center, test
your piloting skills in flight simulators, meet model
airplane experts, and hear a variety of guest speakers. The event is free and open to the public. See

The middle school years can sometimes be a challenging time for
parents and children alike.
The Parent Encouragement Program (PEP) in Kensignton, MD is a
non-profit educational organization for parents, teachers and
others who want to deal constructively with children and teens.
PEP is dedicated to the building and strengthening of healthy,
harmonious adult-child relationships in the home or classroom. If
you need support, consider exploring classes, workshops, talks or

help make Parkland the special place that it is!
