The Most Worthwhile Thing We Possess Is
Christ and His Gospel
Lo Más Valioso Que Tenemos Es
Cristo y Su Evangelio
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
On this Seventh Sunday of Easter we gather together in joy to
celebrate a feast of holiness.
Let us look at the new saints in the light of the word of God proclaimed. It is a word that has invited us to be faithful to Christ,
even to martyrdom; it has reminded us of the urgency and beauty
of bringing Christ and his Gospel to everyone; and it has spoken
to us of the testimony of charity, without which even martyrdom
and the mission lose their Christian savour.
Queridos hermanos y hermanas:
En este Séptimo Domingo del Tiempo Pascual, nos reunimos con
alegría para celebrar una fiesta de santidad.
Miremos a los nuevos santos [los Mártires de Otranto, la Madre
Laura Motoya, y la Madre Maria Guadalupe García Zavala] a la
luz de la Palabra de Dios que ha sido proclamada. Una palabra
que nos invita a la fidelidad a Cristo, incluso hasta el martirio; nos
ha llamado a la urgencia y la hermosura de llevar a Cristo y
su Evangelio a todos; y nos ha hablado del testimonio de la
caridad, sin la cual, incluso el martirio y la misión pierden su
sabor cristiano.
When the Acts of the Apostles tell us about the Deacon Stephen,
the Proto-Martyr, it is written that he was a man “filled with the
Holy Spirit” (6, 5; 7, 55). What does this mean? It means that he
was filled with the Love of God, that his whole self, his life, was
inspired by the Spirit of the Risen Christ so that he followed Jesus
with total fidelity, to the point of giving up himself.
About 800 people, who had survived the siege and invasion of
Otranto, were beheaded in the environs of that city. They refused
to deny their faith and died professing the Risen Christ. Where did
they find the strength to stay faithful? In the faith itself, which enables us to see beyond the limits of our human sight, beyond the
boundaries of earthly life. It grants us to contemplate “the heavens
opened”, as St Stephen says, and the living Christ at God’s right
hand.
We might take a second idea from the words of Jesus which we
heard in the Gospel: “I do not pray for these only, but also for
those who believe in me through their word, that they may all be
one; even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also
may be in us” (John 17,20). St Laura Montoya was an instrument
of evangelization, first as a teacher and later as a spiritual mother
of the indigenous in whom she instilled hope, welcoming them
with this love that she had learned from God and bringing them to
him with an effective pedagogy that respected their culture and
was not in opposition to it.
This first saint, born in the beautiful country of Colombia, teaches
us to be generous to God … She teaches us to see Jesus’ face
reflected in others and to get the better of the indifference and
individualism that corrode Christian communities and eat away
our heart itself. She also teaches us to accept everyone without
prejudice, without discrimination and without reticence, but rather
with sincere love, giving them the very best of ourselves and, especially, sharing with them our most worthwhile possession; this is
not one of our institutions or organizations, no. The most worthwhile thing we possess is Christ and his Gospel.
Lastly, a third idea. In today’s Gospel, Jesus prays to the Father
with these words: “I made known to them your name, and I will
make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may
be in them, and I in them” (John 17,26). The martyr’s fidelity event
to the death and the proclamation of the Gospel to all people are
rooted, have their roots, in God’s love, which was poured out into
our hearts by the Holy Spirit (cf. Rom 5,5), and in the witness we
must bear in our life to this love.
St Guadalupe García Zavala was well aware of this.
This new Mexican saint invites us to love as Jesus loved us. This
does not entail withdrawal into ourselves, into our own problems,
into our own ideas, into our own interests, into this small world
that is so harmful to us; but rather to come out of ourselves and
care for those who are in need of attention, understanding and
help, to bring them the warm closeness of God’s love through
tangible actions of sensitivity, of sincere affection and of love.

Los Hechos de los Apóstoles, cuando hablan del diácono Esteban, el protomártir, insisten en decir que él era un hombre «lleno
del Espíritu Santo» (6,5; 7,55). ¿Qué significa esto? Significa que
estaba lleno del amor de Dios, que toda su persona, su vida, estaba animada por el Espíritu de Cristo resucitado hasta el punto
de seguir a Jesús con fidelidad total, hasta la entrega de sí mismo.
Casi 800 personas, supervivientes del asedio y la invasión de
Otranto, fueron decapitadas en las afueras de la ciudad. No
quisieron renegar de la propia fe y murieron confesando a Cristo
resucitado. ¿Dónde encontraron la fuerza para permanecer
fieles? Precisamente en la fe, que nos hace ver más allá de los
límites de nuestra mirada humana, más allá de la vida terrena;
hace que contemplemos «los cielos abiertos» –como dice san
Esteban – y a Cristo vivo a la derecha del Padre.
La segunda idea la podemos extraer de las palabras de Jesús
que hemos escuchado en el Evangelio: «Ruego por los que creerán en mí por la palabra de ellos, para que sean uno, como tú,
Padre, en mí y yo en ti, que ellos también lo sean en nosotros» (Juan 17, 20).
Santa Laura Montoya fue instrumento de evangelización primero
como maestra y después como madre espiritual de los indígenas,
a los que infundió esperanza, acogiéndolos con ese amor aprendido de Dios, y llevándolos a Él con una eficaz pedagogía que
respetaba su cultura y no se contraponía a ella.
Esta primera santa nacida en la hermosa tierra colombiana nos
enseña a ser generosos con Dios… . Nos enseña a ver el rostro
de Jesús reflejado en el otro, a vencer la indiferencia y el individualismo, que corroe las comunidades cristianas y corroe nuestro
propio corazón, y nos enseña a acoger a todos sin prejuicios, sin
discriminación, sin reticencia, con auténtico amor, dándoles lo
mejor de nosotros mismos y, sobre todo, compartiendo con ellos
lo más valioso que tenemos, que no son nuestras obras o nuestras organizaciones, no. Lo más valioso que tenemos es Cristo y
su Evangelio.
Por último, una tercera idea. En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús reza
al Padre con estas palabras: «Les he dado a conocer y les daré a
conocer tu nombre, para que el amor que me tenías esté en ellos
y yo en ellos» (Juan 17,26). La fidelidad hasta la muerte de los
mártires, la proclamación del Evangelio a todos se enraízan, tienen su raíz, en el amor de Dios, que ha sido derramado en nuestros corazones por el Espíritu Santo (cf. Romanos 5,5), y en el
testimonio que hemos de dar de este amor en nuestra vida diaria.
Santa Guadalupe García Zavala lo sabía bien.
Esta nueva santa mexicana nos invita a amar como Jesús nos ha
amado, y esto conlleva no encerrarse en uno mismo, en los propios problemas, en las propias ideas, en los propios intereses, en
ese pequeño mundito que nos hace tanto daño, sino salir e ir al
encuentro de quien tiene necesidad de atención, compresión y
ayuda, para llevarle la cálida cercanía del amor de Dios, a través
de gestos concretos de delicadeza, de afecto sincero y de amor.

miembros de la Iglesia y seguidores de Jesús. Nuestra vida como comunidad creciente de adoración, de la palabra y de servicio fluye de
nuestra celebración de la Eucaristía. La herencia de laicos dedicados en compañía de nuestros sacerdotes y religiosos hace que nuestro
llamado al discipulado sea de servicio, corresponsabilidad y evangelización. Nuestra diversidad cultural trae riqueza y vitalidad a nuestra
