No puedo levantarme a darte nada."
Pida, busque y toque...

Three things strike me immediately about the scripture today. 1) The Mercy of God is
unbelievable. 2) Persistence of faith by Abraham, even in front of God Almighty. 3)
The ultimate prayer is taught to us by Jesus Himself.
In The Genesis reading today, God intended to destroy both Sodom and Gomorrah
because of their decadence and sinfulness. It was Abraham, with his persistence of faith
in mercy, who kept asking God to save the people if there were but 50, 45, 40, 30 20 and
then 10 people who were innocent in God’s eyes. God relented and in His mercy saved
the innocent and the unjust. This man, Abraham, persistent to the end, who kept after
God, though he himself realized he was but dust and ashes. Then God, who understood
exactly how deep Abraham’s faith went, relented from destroying two cities in favor of
the just who lived there.
In the second reading from Colossians, Paul tells us just how amazing Jesus is that he
would forgive our transgressions, using God’s Only Son nailed to a cross to do it. Again, the great mercy of God
speaks to us.
Finally, the Gospel is jammed packed with stuff we need on a day to day basis. Luke places the story of how we
came to know the perfect Prayer - The Our Father. He then goes on to tell a story about Mercy and persistence.
I have some favorite lines from this story so please bear with me. “Do not bother me; the door has already been
locked and my children and I are already in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything.” Or this one: “What
father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish?” And this one, albeit out of order in the
story (for my purposes); … “ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened to
you.”
Jesus showed us just what an attitude of prayer containing gratitude, praise, and seeking our needs for the day,
coupled with seeking God’s forgiveness while we forgive those around us. This is our way of being persistent. It is
our way of asking for forgiveness and the strength to forgive. It is acknowledging that God is at the heart of it all,
and finally petitioning for the needs of today to be taken care of. Powerful Stuff!
The whole persistence thing is something that really resonates with me. I can tell you unequivocally that I have
‘persisted’ with every Pastor in every parish I have worked in, and often much to their chagrin! Just ask Fr. Ric!
But I do know from both belief and experience that when you seek you shall find, when you ask it will be given,
and when you are persistent at knocking the door will be opened to you! Persistence counts. Sometimes no one
is listening, and often as not, they disagree with you, and sometimes patience wears thin on those receiving your
persistence!
Then there is Mercy. Abraham is a good lesson to walk away with today. He saw the good in a few people and
God relented. While Abraham had persistence (or hutzpah) he was also pushing for God to have Mercy. Even
though God holds all the cards, He decided to relent, and be merciful, saving the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.
I have a few things that we might take with us this week if I might be so bold. Try not just reciting the Our
Father at Mass or in your private prayers….actually pay attention to what you are praying. The words are
perfect! It is a totally powerful prayer. It is rather easy to just go into auto pilot when we pray this most
familiar of all prayers in Christendom. Just pay attention to them this week.
Look for how you can be demonstrably merciful to someone this week. It doesn’t have to be huge or life
shattering, but perhaps being a bit kinder to someone who irks you, or letting something go that might be
bugging you. Perhaps donate something to The St. Vincent DePaul Society.
Here is the tough one! Be persistent this week! Ask, seek and knock…..I don’t mean keep playing the lottery…I
mean for the important stuff. If it is truly important go after it! Don’t let it slip by you!
OH…and don’t forget that we open our Centennial Celebration on August 27th at the 5:00PM Saturday Mass.
We’d love to have every single person in the parish attending! Pack the house and raise the roof in prayer and
song! Mark your calendars please. Bishop Manz, Fr. Ric, Fr. Tom, Deacons Moises and Faustino, as well as
other priests who have either been our shepherds or associates in the past will be with us too!
Please join us, make a special effort as we celebrate our past but most importantly look to our future as the
Catholic Community here at Addison and Lavergne.

KEEP PRAYING
SIGUE REZANDO
St. Monica, whose feast we celebrate in August, is
often known as “the persistent mother.” She
watched her oldest son, Augustine, turn his back
on his Christian faith.
Santa Mónica, cuya fiesta celebramos en agosto,
se conoce generalmente como “la madre
persistente”.
Monica was exasperated. For years she gave up
talking directly to her son on the advice of a local
bishop, who told her that it was better to talk to
God about Augustine then to Augustine about
God.
The mother never gave up praying for her son.
Eventually Augustine gave up his wild ways, was
baptized, and later ordained and named bishop of
Hippo. St. Augustine went on to become one of
the Church’s greatest scholars.
bautizado y luego ordenado y nombrado obispo
Today’s readings address the importance of persistent prayer. Abraham, in spite of trepidation
that he is bothering the Lord, continues to ask
about the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah. Jesus, in
Luke’s Gospel, tells his disciples to “ask and you
will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the
door will be opened to you” (Luke 11:9). This is
our charge: keep praying.
