 A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR 
HERE ARE THE FACES OF THE NUNS
WHO WERE MARTYRED IN YEMEN
From L-R: Sr. Anselm, Sr. Reginette, Sr. Judith, Sr. Marguerite. Credit: The Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Arabia.
By Maggie Maslak and Alan Holdren/Catholic News Agency (Reprinted with permission)
Rome, Italy, 8 March 2016/01:27 P.M. (CNA/EWTN News). - Sister Anslem, Sister Reginette, Sister Judith, and Sister
Marguerite were serving as caretakers at the Missionaries of Charity's convent and nursing home in Aden, Yemen.
These sisters left their homes in India and Africa to serve the poor, elderly, and disabled in the war-torn country of
Yemen. They worked together with volunteers at the convent's home care center, where they served around sixty to
eighty patients of all religions. “They were serving all poor people irrespective of their religion. Their duty was to
help the poor,” a representative from the Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Arabia told CNA.
But on 4 March, the convent was attacked by two gunmen who killed Sr. Anslem, Sr. Judith, Sr. Marguerite, and
Sr. Reginette, along with sixteen other victims, including volunteers from Ethiopia and Yemen. Each victim was found
handcuffed and shot in the head. No residents of the nursing home were harmed.
Pope Francis called the sisters “martyrs of today” who “gave their blood for the Church.”
According to a statement from the Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Arabia, Sr. Anslem was from Ranchi, India and
would have turned 60 years old on 8 May. Sr. Judith was from Kenya and had just turned 41 years old on 2 Feb.
Sr. Marguerite was from Rwanda and would have been 44 years old on 29 April. The youngest nun, Sr. Reginette,
was from Rwanda and would've turned 33 on 29 June.
Since the attack, the Missionaries of Charity's nursing home has been relying on the aid of volunteers and
government support to continue their care of the elderly, which has lasted for 24 years in Aden.
“Now, the local government is taking care of the elderly with the help of some volunteers, university students and
young people,” the representative said. The convent's superior, Sister Sally, was originally reported missing during
the attack, but she has since been declared safe. “Sister Sally is safe and I think she will go to her regional superior's
house that is in Jordan,” the representative added.
However, Salesian priest Father Tom Uzhunnalil is still missing after his reported abduction. Fr. Uzhunnalil is an
Indian priest who had been staying with the sisters and has not been found since the attack on 4 March.
No group has claimed responsibility for the onslaught against the Missionaries of Charity convent, but the country of
Yemen is in the midst of a year-long civil war which has claimed the lives of more than 6,000 people.

PARISH LENTEN PROJECT
(Sunday, 7 February to Sunday, 3 April 2016)
During the Holy Season of LENT at Our Holy Redeemer you have the opportunity to pray for the
babies, fast for the babies, and give alms for the babies as well.
The alms you offer will not only fill up bottles with spare change, but it will fill The Life Center of
Long Island - a crisis pregnancy center that counsels women and men who are experiencing an
unplanned pregnancy - with hope! Pick up a bottle, take it home, take it to school and/or to the office,
fill it with change, return it to the Church, and let Our Holy Redeemer and The Life Center
do the rest! Pregnant? You are not alone. Choose life! Call (631) 243–0066 for assistance.

observe the law of fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
This means limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food
between meals. Two other light meals may be taken during the day.

With help from a Message
from the Pastor and a
sermon from the Pastor as
well (III Sunday Lent/28
February 2016) it seems
that at least one of you who
heard the Parable of the Barren Fig Tree, not just once but a thousand times, got the message and
wasted no time in letting me know.
Sunday, March 6, 2016
Dear Father Arcoleo,
I did listen to your sermon last Sunday, encouraging parishioners to contribute to the
Catholic Ministries Appeal. With your campaign to reach 500 donors this year, I felt
compelled to assist you reaching that goal. My goal for this week was getting 10
people to contribute. I did reach my goal but failed to collect one check. I sure will
make up for it next week. Enclosed are 8 envelopes (9 checks $330) for this week.
Please accept my assistance for this week. Hope you will be reaching your goal of
500 donors for this year.
Sincerely,
Can you imagine how many CMA pledges would surface if
each person in attendance at Mass last Sunday/this
Sunday felt compelled to assist Our Holy Redeemer in
reaching our 500 pledge goal? Please, if you have not yet
answered the CMA, take a moment now and complete
the pledge form below. Your pledge will be a sign that
you too got the lesson of the Parable of the Barren Fig
Tree, so that when the Land Owner returns He will find
the fruit that He is looking for; which is not your pledge,
but the Spirit of Charity that produced it.
You can make a difference! Please make your check payable to: Catholic Ministries Appeal and either mail directly
to the Diocese at the address below or deposit it in the Sunday Offertory Basket. Thank you!

LA Fitness. Gold’s Gym. Blink. Retro Fitness. The De La Salle School.
Each of the above has certain machines that coupled with a disciplined regimen and the guidance of a
competent trainer can help someone cultivate good habits that enhance good health.
Yes, The De La Salle School’s physical education program now has a room with an exercise bicycle, fitness equipment, a
jump rope, several mats, and some free weights. In the course of a class period Mr. Donodeo, our physical education
teacher, has each student rotate among stations. The students are enjoying this addition to our curriculum even if some of
them are complaining about some unfamiliar aches!
The donated equipment and the renovated room abutting the gym now make it possible for our students to experience a
thorough age appropriate workout. Our goal is that these lessons prepare our students for a healthy lifestyle.

3:00 P.M. Each service will take place in the School Auditorium. Please plan to attend as we support one another on our

Last week we heard that Jesus ate with sinners. Today we hear of Jesus forgiveness: “Neither do I
condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin anymore” (See John 8:1-11). We will never stop
learning from these words of Jesus. This is one of those cases in which as the Psalmist says: “Love
and truth will meet; justice and peace will kiss” (Psalm 85:11). Jesus is not condoning sin. He very
clearly states, “from now on do not sin anymore.” But He doesn’t condemn the sinner. He makes a
distinction between the action and the person who commits the action. The Mosaic Law
commanded that the woman caught in the act should be stoned. Clearly this is another example of
God allowing something because of the hardness of man’s heart (See also Matthew 19:8). As we
journey through Lent we take this example of Jesus and we look at our own life. Are we among
those ready to cast the first stone? Maybe not, but perhaps we look down on the sinner or talk
about him or her. If this is true, then this passage calls us to make some changes. We need to learn
to be more like Jesus. We need to recognize that the truth is that since we are all sinners none of us are in the position to
cast that first stone. We need to take one more step. We need not to condemn the sinner in our heart. We need to speak
comforting and reassuring words to the sinner: “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin anymore.”
SEA SCOUTS, B.S.A.
(Coming Soon to Our Holy Redeemer!)
Sea Scouting is adventure on sea and land -- for you. Sea Scouting is program
of the Boy Scouts of America we will be offering to young men between the
ages of 13 (who have completed the eighth grade) and 21. It's a chance to
learn and have fun at the same time.
Sea Scouts is a specialized segment of the Scouting program, which teaches
boating skills and promotes knowledge of our maritime heritage.
Sea Scout units, called "ships," focus on sailing and cruising either sailboats or power vessels. During the
boating seasons, Sea Scouts learn to maintain and operate their vessel, with a focus on learning the safe
and proper methods of handling boats. Sea Scouts also learn the meaning of buoys and lights, how to take
advantage of wind and tide, and how to drop anchor or approach a dock.
Those interested in joining the Sea Scouts or becoming a volunteer adult leader (ages 21+) are asked to
leave their name for Father Alessandro da Luz at the Rectory: (516) 378-0665.

diga algo, haga algo.)

Nunca
Jesús no
Necesitamos
imitar a Jesús.
CASTING
STONES
The scribes and Pharisees
brought a woman to Jesus
who had been caught in
adultery and made her stand
in the middle. They said to
Him, “Teacher, this woman
was caught in the very act of
committing adultery. Now in
the law, Moses commanded us
to stone such women. So
what do you say?” … Jesus
bent down and started to
write on the ground with His
finger. … He said to them,
“Let the one among you who is
without sin be the first to
throw a stone at her.” And
in response, they went away
one by one, beginning with
the elders. … Then Jesus said
to her, “Go, and from now on
do not sin anymore.”
