Bathing Jesus’ feet with tears, drying them with unveiled hair, anointing them (Luke 7:38) risk Jesus’ becoming “unclean.” Yet his mercy welcomes even such inappropriate behavior as her sincere manifestation of love: “Your sins are forgiven. Go in peace” (7:48, 50). Go not just in “peace,” but in shalom, the all-enveloping, life-changing assurance of God’s mercy. She is anonymous, “known in the city” only as “a sinful woman” (7:37). The character with name and religious title, “Simon the Pharisee” (7:36, 40), judges her harshly, but himself not at all, and thus forfeits God’s mercy. This Jubilee Year of Mercy challenges us to self-examination. In which role do we most often cast ourselves, humble sinner or judgmental Pharisee? Jesus declares that only by an unfailing willingness to show mercy to fellow sinners can we hope to obtain mercy ourselves (see Misericordiae Vultus, 9).—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Page Six Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time June 12, 2016 I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me. — Galatians 2:20 Gospel reading Luke 7:36-8:3 A Pharisee invited Jesus to dine with him, and he entered the Pharisee's house and reclined at table. Now there was a sinful woman in the city who learned that he was at table in the house of the Pharisee. Bringing an alabaster flask of ointment, she stood behind him at his feet weeping and began to bathe his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and anointed them with the ointment. When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would know who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner." Jesus said to him in reply, "Simon, I have something to say to you." "Tell me, teacher," he said. "Two people were in debt to a certain creditor; one owed five hundred day's wages and the other owed fifty. Since they were unable to repay the debt, he forgave it for both. Which of them will love him more?" Simon said in reply, "The one, I suppose, whose larger debt was forgiven." He said to him, "You have judged rightly." Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? When I entered your house, you did not give me water for my feet, but she has bathed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but she has not ceased kissing my feet since the time I entered. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she anointed my feet with ointment. So I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven because she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little." He said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." The others at table said to themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?" But he said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace." Afterward he journeyed from one town and village to another, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. Accompanying him were the Twelve and some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, Joanna, the wife of Herod's steward Chuza, Susanna, and many others who provided for them out of their resources. Brief commentary Today’s gospel is a classic example not only of what has drawn countless to Jesus, but what countless have felt in encountering him. We read about a Jesus who treats people as people, without the social conventions and inhibitions that often differentiate between the included and excluded. He is approachable by all, and turns none away. He also calls people to ‘see’ the humanity in others: to Simon who only saw a ‘sinner’, Jesus asks him “Do you see this woman [this person]?” What Christian has not felt his welcome! What Christian has not felt their human dignity affirmed by him, as did this woman! Perhaps this is our first experience of his grace, his healing forgiveness and mercy. From this woman’s actions, as well as from Jesus’ teaching, Christians came to learn that “Love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8). Her example of extravagant love is a paradigm for all. If sin is somehow the reversal of love, then true love is the heart of what restores a person. Other women are also noted in today’s narrative: Mary of Magdala, Joanna, Susanna, “and many others,” such as Salome. That Jesus had women disciples is likewise indicative of the inclusive community he was building. Often forgotten by theologians and artists throughout history, today we have a more conscious appreciation of the type of person Jesus was and the type of egalitarian-like community he had in mind. Christians men and women, young and old, today continue to be those who are involved in Jesus’ mission of love and mercy, going “from one town and village to another, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God.” For there are many yearning to hear Jesus’ words, “Your sins are forgiven…your faith has saved you…go in peace.” Today’s reading offers three significant messages: Jesus welcomes all and turns none away who come to him in faith. The woman who anointed him experienced his mercy, just as he experiences her example of heartfelt love. The experience of God’s forgiving grace, of God’s love, fills us with indescribable joy, restores our sense of dignity, heals us and gives us peace. Love is greater than sin. Jesus founded a community – an ekklesia – where all are welcome and all participate in his mission of mercy to the world, announcing the good news of the kingdom of God. For our shared or personal reflection: After a brief pause for silent reflection share your answers, ideas or feelings. How have I experienced the mercy and forgiveness – the grace – of Jesus in my life? What is my vision of the Church and how do I participate in her mission in and for the world? How do the women in today’s gospel inspire me? Entonces Jesús le dijo: "Has juzgado bien".
