SAFETY MONDAY
Safety for Temporary Workers, Contractors and Customers
When you think about safety, you often focus on keeping front-line
workers (drivers, helpers, heavy equipment operators, mechanics) safe and
preventing them from being injured or killed in an accident. Additionally,
Waste Industry managers and supervisors also need to ensure the safety
of their temporary workers, contractors and customers:
• 26 year old construction worker was killed when a front-end load
backed over him at a Massachusetts Transfer Station.
• A San Francisco Public Works temporary worker was killed when he
tripped and fell in front of the rear wheels of a garbage truck and
was run over.
When these incidents occur, the headline is always about “Transfer
Station” or the “trash truck”. Reporters and others usually do not
distinguish between solid waste companies and their vendors. The industry
can be unfairly criticized when these accidents occur, and not incidentally,
someone’s son, father, husband or wife is hurt or killed. Taking care of your
contractors and customers should be an important part of your safety
program.

Seguridad para Trabajadores Temporarios, Contratistas y Clientes
Cuando uno piensa sobre seguridad, uno a veces se enfoca en proteger a
los trabajadores de primera fila (choferes, conductores, asistentes,
operadores de maquinaria fuerte, mecánicos) y prevenir accidentes que
los puedan lastimar o matar. Además, supervisores y jefes en la industria
de basura y reciclaje también tienen que encargarse de la seguridad de
empleados temporarios, contratistas y clientes:
• En una estación de transferencia de Massachusetts, un trabajador de
construcción, de 26 años de edad, falleció cuando un cargador frontal
dio marcha atrás por encima de el.
• Un trabajador temporal del departamento de obras publicas de San
Francisco fue matado cuando dio un tropezón y callo delante de las
ruedas posteriores de un camión de basura y fue atropellado.
Cuando ocurren estos incidentes, los artículos en los periódicos se refieren
al papel del los camiones de basura o de la estación de transferencia. Los
reporteros no distinguen de entre las compañías de basura y sus
vendedores. Mas allá de lo mas grave, que es el hecho de que una persona
a sido herido o a fallecido, hay que tomar en cuenta que la industria recibe
una reputación negativa (muchas veces injustamente) cuando estas
situaciones toman lugar. Cuidar a sus contratistas y clientes debería ser
una gran parte de su programa de seguridad.
