What Do You Smell Like
Dear Friends,
Dear priests, may God the Father renew in us the Spirit of holiness with
whom we have been anointed. May he renew his Spirit in our hearts that this
anointing may spread to everyone, even to those “outskirts” where our faithful
people most look for it and most appreciate it. May our people sense that we are
the Lord’s disciples; may they feel that their names are written upon our priestly
vestments and that we seek no other identity; and may they receive through our
words and deeds the oil of gladness which Jesus, the Anointed One, came to bring
us. Amen.
Today is Good Shepherd Sunday. Over the past
several months you might have heard of the Holy
Father talking about the shepherd needing to smell
like the sheep. Someone recently asked me what
the Pope means when he says that. The image of
Pope Francis carrying the actual living sheep on his
shoulders clearly conveys the intended message of the pontiff.
What do these words say to you? Will you join Jesus and the Holy
Father on the outskirts? Are you willing to smell like the poor?
I extend the invitation of the Holy Father, the challenge he put out
to the priests gathered at the Chrism Mass in 2013, to every Catholic
Christian. The Pope’s message to smell like the sheep encouraged us to
get out of ourselves and to allow ourselves to become physically close
to the ones God entrusts to our care. I invite you to read the lines of
the homily and consider his invitation to the priests an invitation to
you. The words challenge and inspire me - as a priest, yes, but first and
foremost as a Christian. Allow them to touch your hearts and to move
you to action.
On another note, Friday was Jennifer Cortez’s last day as a full
time employee of Saint John Berchmans. Jennifer came to us six years
ago – for a two-year hiatus from her electrical engineering job. She came
to help with the legacy campaign. We thought it would be two years.
Her work continued and evolved. She accepted the role of Director
of Stewardship and Liturgy. She coordinated weddings and funerals.
Jennifer helped to start the first parish pastoral council this parish has
ever had. She cleaned and managed our databases. She managed give
central and our email blasts. She produced the weekly bulletin. She
worked hard and succeeded in every aspect of her ministry. As she
returns to her former career, her daily presence at Saint John Berchmans
will be missed. Luckily she will continue to serve as a volunteer, doing
some of the tasks she has managed. I am grateful for the work she has
done - and the work she has agreed to do going forward. The Parish
Council and the staff will help me to discern the next steps for us as a
staff. I’m confident that the Holy Spirit will continue to guide us, and
that great things will continue to happen here!
The priest who seldom goes out of himself, who anoints little misses out on
the best of our people, on what can stir the depths of his heart.Those who do not
go out of themselves, instead of being mediators, gradually become intermediaries,
managers.We know the difference: the intermediary, the manager, “has already
received his reward”, and since he doesn’t put his own skin and his own heart
on the line, he never hears a warm, heartfelt word of thanks.This is precisely the
reason for the dissatisfaction of some, who end up sad, in some sense becoming
collectors of antiques or novelties, instead of being shepherds living with “the odor
of the sheep”. This I ask you: be shepherds, with the “odor of the sheep”, make it
real, as shepherds among your flock, fishers of men… It is not a bad thing that
reality itself forces us to “put out into the deep”, where what we are by grace is
clearly seen as pure grace, out into the deep of the contemporary world, where the
only thing that counts is “unction” – not function – and the nets which overflow
with fish are those cast solely in the name of the One in whom we have put our
trust: Jesus.

Many of the students in both our school and Religious Education
program are in the final stages of preparing to receive Sacraments in the
first week of May. First Communions will be celebrated at the 5pm Mass
on Saturday, April 30th and the 9:45am & 11:30am Masses on Sunday,
May 1st. Confirmation will be celebrated at 7pm on Wednesday, May
4th. Please keep these students in your prayers during these final weeks
and consider joining us at one or more of the Masses to share their
Sacramental joy!

This month the Peace & Justice, Paz y Justicia Commission is focused on Catholic
Social Teaching Principle: Care for God’s Creation. Pope Francis in his most recent
encyclical, Laudato Si’ (Praise be to you) invites us to reflect on our relationship
with mother earth:
“The human environment and the natural environment deteriorate
together; we cannot adequately combat environmental degradation
unless we attend to causes related to human and social degradation. In
fact, the deterioration of the environment and of society affects the most
vulnerable people on the planet: ‘Both everyday experience and scientific
research show that the gravest effects of all attacks on the environment are
suffered by the poorest’” (Pope Francis Laudato Si’ #48).

¿A Que Huele Usted?
Queridos Amigos,
Queridos sacerdotes, que Dios Padre renueve en nosotros el Espíritu de Santidad
con que hemos sido ungidos, que lo renueve en nuestro corazón de tal manera que
la unción llegue a todos, también a las «periferias», allí donde nuestro pueblo fiel
más lo espera y valora. Que nuestra gente nos sienta discípulos del Señor, sienta que
estamos revestidos con sus nombres, que no buscamos otra identidad; y pueda recibir
a través de nuestras palabras y obras ese óleo de alegría que les vino a traer Jesús, el
Ungido. Amén.
Hoy es el Domingo del Buen Pastor. En los
últimos meses quizás haya escuchado al Santo Padre
hablar sobre el pastor que huele como las ovejas.
Alguien recientemente me preguntó qué quiere
decir el Papa con esto. La imagen del Papa Francisco
cargando la oveja viva sobre sus hombros transmite
claramente el propósito del mensaje del Pontífice.
¿Qué les dicen estas palabras a ustedes? ¿Se unirán a Jesús y al Santo
Padre en la periferia? ¿Están dispuestos a oler como los pobres?
Extiendo la invitación del Santo Padre, el desafío que hizo a los
sacerdotes reunidos en la Misa Crismal en 2013, para cada cristiano
católico. El mensaje del Papa de oler como la oveja nos animó a salir de
nosotros mismos y permitirnos estar cerca físicamente de los que Dios
confía a nuestro cuidado. Los invito a leer las líneas de la homilía y a
considerar la invitación a los sacerdotes, una invitación para ustedes. Las
palabras me desafían y me inspiran - como sacerdote, pero ante todo,
como cristiano. Permitan que les toquen sus corazones y los lleven a actuar.
Por otra parte, el viernes fue el último día de Jennifer Cortez como
empleada permanente de San Juan Berchmans. Jennifer se unió a nosotros
hace seis años – tomando un lapso de dos años de su trabajo de ingeniería
eléctrica. Ella vino para ayudarnos con la Campaña de Legado. Pensábamos
que sería de dos años. Su trabajo continuó y evolucionó. Ella aceptó el
papel de Directora de Administración y Liturgia. Coordinó bodas y
funerales. Jennifer ayudó a iniciar el primer Consejo Pastoral Parroquial
que esta parroquia ha tenido. Ella arregló y organizó nuestros archivos
y la base de datos. Logró desarrollar Give Central y nuestro correo
electrónico. Ella produjo el boletín semanal. Ella trabajó arduamente y
tuvo éxito en todos los aspectos de su ministerio. Mientras ella regresa a su
antigua carrera, extrañaremos su presencia diaria en San Juan Berchmans.
Por suerte ella seguirá sirviendo como voluntaria, haciendo algunas de las
tareas. Estoy muy agradecido por el trabajo que ha realizado - y el trabajo
que ha aceptado hacer en el futuro. El Consejo Parroquial y el personal
me ayudarán a discernir los pasos a seguir como personal. Estoy seguro
de que el Espíritu Santo continuara guiándonos, y ¡grandes cosas seguirán
ocurriendo aquí!
El sacerdote que sale poco de sí, que unge poco – no digo «nada» porque,
gracias a Dios, la gente nos roba la unción – se pierde lo mejor de nuestro pueblo,
eso que es capaz de activar lo más hondo de su corazón presbiteral. El que no sale
de sí, en vez de mediador, se va convirtiendo poco a poco en intermediario, en gestor.
Todos conocemos la diferencia: el intermediario y el gestor «ya tienen su paga»,
y puesto que no ponen en juego la propia piel ni el corazón, tampoco reciben un
agradecimiento afectuoso que nace del corazón. De aquí proviene precisamente la
insatisfacción de algunos, que terminan tristes, sacerdotes tristes, y convertidos en
una especie de coleccionistas de antigüedades o bien de novedades, en vez de ser
pastores con «olor a oveja» –esto os pido: sed pastores con «olor a oveja», que eso se
note–; en vez de ser pastores en medio al propio rebaño, y pescadores de hombres. Es
verdad que la así llamada crisis de identidad sacerdotal nos amenaza a todos y se
suma a una crisis de civilización; pero si sabemos barrenar su ola, podremos meternos
mar adentro en nombre del Señor y echar las redes. Es bueno que la realidad misma
nos lleve a ir allí donde lo que somos por gracia se muestra claramente como pura
gracia, en ese mar del mundo actual donde sólo vale la unción – y no la función – y
resultan fecundas las redes echadas únicamente en el nombre de Aquél de quien nos
hemos fiado: Jesús.

Muchos de los estudiantes en nuestra escuela y del Programa de Educación
Religiosa están en las etapas finales de preparación para recibir los

Ayudar a los Vulnerables
