Vallarta's gay scene includes a couple dozen
gay clubs and bars and 3 beach clubs that run from
the gay beach area north to just across the river.
The gay beach at Playa los Muertos is, of
course, the busiest gay spot during the day, and the
large crowd spreads out among 3 beach clubs that
cater to the gay market. Originally there was the
Blue Chairs but the crowd always was so big that
Ritmos, generally known as the green chairs, was
always a part of the gay beach area, too. Now we
have Club Lido which offers more upscale service
with an European flair.
Sunsets can be spectacular in Vallarta and a gay
cocktail hour gathering can be found viewing the
sunset each evening from the rooftop of Blue
Chairs. At the Blue Sunset Bar you'll find a
celebratory group enjoying the wonderful view
above the beach and the daily live entertainment
of stripper and drag shows, gay bingo, and
karaoke!
Not into sunset watching? Things are usually
peaking over at the courtyard pool area of the
Vallarta Cora, where it isn't unusual for the pool
to look like a 50 man hot tub.
Early in the evening several small bars get
going in the Olas Altas area. Apaches Martini Bar
and Bistro, the original martini bar in PV, is a
popular meeting place surrounded by ambience.
Garbo, a quieter and intimate place usually
featuring background jazz music in a nice art deco

the Crow’s Nest at The Swedes. Sama is a fabulous
sidewalk martini lounge with great music all
night. The Palm - a show bar with great attractions of visiting performers. Also on Olas Altas, is

The main cluster of gay bars today is an
outgrowth of city planning decisions made in the
early 1990’s. They created a Cabaret Zone, a four
block square area where the city fathers wanted
the late night entertainment, with its accompanying noise, to be corralled. Today it is home to
many of our gay bars and clubs. In this zone you’ll
find: Los Amigos - a completely unpretentious gay
cantina where you'll find Arturo is busily tending
bar, La Noche - a classy cosmopolitan lounge now
greatly expanded including a new rooftop bar, La
Margarita - a new intimate latino bar, Reinas (which means queens!) is a smaller cantina,
popular with locals and tourists, where you might
meet your prince! Wet Dreams - the place where
the wet shows are special, Encuentros - a classy
lounge with lighter food fare and Frida's - an
authentic Mexican cantina popular with locals and
tourists day and night.
The legendary Club Paco Paco led the way as
the first gay place in the Cabaret Zone but is now
gone. The related club Paco’s Ranch carries on in
a new location across the street, where they
maintain their tradition of Mexican drag shows
and great prices.
CC Slaughters PV - has dancing continuously
as the music never stops and a separate lounge
that opens early. Club Enter, a new club located
nearby, is popular with younger residents. Los
Equipales - an authentic Mexican Botanero that is
very popular very late at night.
Outside the Cabaret Zone but within easy
walking distance are Chill Out Lounge - a delightful women owned space that completely defies
categorization, Antropology - an upscale nude
male“Strip Club” with continuous eye candy.

La escena gay en Vallarta incluye más de
veinte clubes y bares gay, y 3 clubes de playa, en

La playa gay en Los Muertos es,
indudablemente, el punto gay más concurrido
durante el día y la multitud se distribuye entre los

gran jacuzzi con 50 hombres.
Temprano por la noche, el ambiente empieza
en varios pequeños bares en el área de Olas Altas.
Entre ellos: Apaches Martini Bar and Bistro, el
bar de martinis original en Puerto Vallarta, es un
lugar muy popular y con mucho ambiente. Garbo,
íntimo y menos bullicioso, ofrece jazz como
música de fondo en una agradable decoración art
decó. Con una fantástica vista desde la cima de
Olas Altas, está el Crow's Nest en The Swedes.
Sama es un fabuloso salón de martinis en la acera

manzanas, en donde querían acorralar la vida
nocturna y su inefable ruido. Hoy en día esta zona
acoge a muchos de nuestros bares y clubes gay.
Ahí encontrarás: Los Amigos, una cantina gay
muy sencilla con Arturo muy atareado a cargo de
la barra. La Noche, elegante salón cosmopolita,
ahora agrandado y con una nueva cantina en la
azotea. La Margarita, una nueva cantina íntima
con ambiente latino. Reinas es una cantina más
pequeña, muy concurrida por locales y turistas,
¡donde quizás encuentres a tu príncipe! Wet
Dreams, dónde el espectáculo húmedo es
especial, Encuentros - Un salón elegante con
menú de comida ligera, y Frida's, auténtica
cantina mexicana popular entre locales y turistas
por igual de día y de noche.
El legendario Club Paco Paco, que fue el
primer lugar gay en la Zona de Cabarets, ya no
está. Su sucesor, Paco's Ranch, sigue la tradición
de espectáculos travesti mexicanos y excelentes
precios en una nueva ubicación al otro lado de la
calle.
CC Slaughters PV, música continua para bailar
y un salón separado que abre más temprano. Club
Enter, un club ubicado a corta distancia, es
popular con los residentes más jóvenes. Los
Equipales, un auténtico salón de botanas
mexicano es muy popular ya muy tarde en las
noches.

el Chill Out Lounge, un encantador sitio
propiedad de mujeres y que va más allá de

In the beginning....

When did it begin? While some point to the
movie “Night of the Iguana” as the real beginning
of gay tourism in Puerto Vallarta, some of the
oldest Vallarta residents claimed that Vallarta was
gay friendly even in the 50s.
By the middle of the 80s, a small cantina on the
malecon, called the Colonial Inn, but
affectionately known as “the piano bar,” was
operating. While not specifically gay, it was a busy
place with many gay men as clientele, and it was
the sort of place you didn't bother counting your
change since you really didn't want to bother with
the drama of disputing it.
When anyone asked about any other gay bars in
town you most assuredly would be told that they
don’t exist in PV.
But there was another by the later 80s - Los
Balcones. Balcones was started by two gay men as
a restaurant/bar. Within a couple years it was
taken over by the landlord, and was lesbian owned
and run. But it was not gay identified in any way.
As the decade ended, the first gay identified bar
arrived.
In December 1989, when David and Paco
moved to PV and opened what would become
“Paco Paco” in the current location of today’s
PVRPV, the limited visibility of gay Puerto
Vallarta started to change.
Paco Paco opened in the daytime and in fact
wasn’t much of a late night spot in the beginning.
But what really was different was a rejection of the
small-minded game of denying any other gay
places whenever asked. In fact they were the first
to really actively promote gay Vallarta.
There are so many more stories and threads in the history
of gay Vallarta. As we celebrate 25 years help us save our
history by submitting your memories in text, audio or video

It started with getting listed in the gay black
book of the day, Bob Damron's Guide and in the
more internationally oriented Spartacus guide.
They listed more than Paco Paco; they added
listings for restaurants and the other businesses
that were gay owned or gay friendly. In the time
before the Internet, these two books were nearly
the only information source available to gay men
who traveled the world.
After these changes, Vallarta suddenly looked
like a much more interesting place. More than a
few of the older gay gringos now living in Vallarta
admit to pulling out that Vallarta page at their local
bookstore before they came here the first time
because the books were “so damn expensive that
you couldn't really afford to buy one.”
Paco Paco also start publishing a simple flyer
with a map of gay Vallarta on one side and postage
stamp size logos of various supporting businesses
on the other side. This led eventually to Gay
Guide Vallarta, a separate business that still is the
direct work of an original founder of Paco Paco.
Within just a few years we saw some small gay
hotels, guest houses and bed and breakfasts, a gay
cruise, and some travel agents specializing in gay
Puerto Vallarta.
But it was hardly all smooth sailing. As things
got going there developed a fair amount of
resistance from local businesses and the municipal
authorities. Rules were put in place that allowed
the neighboring businesses to vote on a new
businesses license. One presentation by a travel
agent so outraged the administration that all the
gay businesses were closed down that night. Let´s
just say, there were plenty of moments of drama.
But generally Vallarta tolerated the growing gay
business community and Zona Romantica started
to flourish like it hadn’t in many years.

¿Cuándo comenzó? Aunque algunos consideren
a la película "La Noche de la Iguana", como el
verdadero comienzo del turismo gay en Puerto
Vallarta, muchos de los residentes más antiguos de
Puerto Vallarta insisten en que era gay friendly, incluso
en los años 50.
A mediados de los 80, ya existía una pequeña
cantina sobre el malecón, el Colonial Inn,
cariñosamente conocido como "el bar de piano".
Aunque no específicamente gay, era un lugar muy
concurrido por su clientela de hombres gay; además de
ser la clase de lugar en dónde no te molestabas en
contar el cambio al pagar la cuenta para evitar todo un
drama al disputarlo.
Si alguien llegara a preguntar acerca de las demás
cantinas de ambiente gay de la ciudad en esa época,
con toda seguridad la respuesta habría sido que no
habían más en Puerto Vallarta. Sin embargo, se
estableció otro negocio a finales de los años 80: Los
Balcones. Los Balcones fue creado por dos hombres
gay como restaurante-bar. Después de un par de años
lo vendieron, y tanto la propietaria como la
administración fueron lesbianas. Pero el lugar, de
ninguna manera, era identificado como gay. Al
terminar la década, abrieron la primera cantina gay.
En diciembre de 1989, cuando David y Paco se
trasladaron a Puerto Vallarta y abrieron lo que después
se convertiría en el "Paco Paco" en el sede actual de
PVRPV, la limitada presencia de gays en Puerto
Vallarta empezó a cambiar.
El Paco Paco abría de día y en realidad, al
principio no era club nocturno. Sin embargo, ahí es
donde empezó un cambio importante, logrando abrir
las mentes cerradas, aferradas a la negación de la
existencia de otros antros gay. De hecho, fueron los
primeros en promover activamente la realidad gay de
Puerto Vallarta.
Empezaron por conseguir que figuraran en el
libro negro gay de la época, el Guía de Bob Damron así
como en el guía de mayor circulación internacional, el
Spartacus . Hicieron una lista de lugares además del
Paco Paco, agregaron a las listas los restaurantes y
demás negocios gay-friendly o de propietarios gay. En

viajar a Puerto Vallarta por primera vez porque los

no podían darse el lujo de comprarlos."
Por aquel entonces, el Paco Paco también inició
la publicación de un folleto sencillo con un mapa de
gay Vallarta por un lado y los logotipos de varias
empresas patrocinadoras por el inverso. De ahí surgió
el Guía Gay Vallarta, un negocio independiente que
hasta hoy en día es obra de uno de los fundadores
originales del Paco Paco .
A los pocos años se iban estableciendo algunos
pequeños hoteles gay, casas de huéspedes y bed and
breakfast, un crucero gay, y algunas agencias de viajes
especializadas en el turismo gay de Puerto Vallarta.
Sin embargo, no ha sido todo viento en popa.
Conforme aumentaba la cantida de empresas gay,
igual aumentaba la resistencia, tanto de las empresas
locales como por parte de las autoridades municipales.
Implementaron reglamentos en la ciudad que
permitían que los negocios vecinos votaran a favor o
en contra de toda licencia comercial nueva. Incluso
hubo una presentación por un agente de viajes que
indignó tanto al gobierno municipal que mandaron a
cerrar todos los negocios gay esa misma noche.
Abundaban los momentos de drama, pero en general,
Puerto Vallarta toleró la creciente comunidad
empresarial de gays y la Zona Romántica comenzó a
prosperar más que nunca.

If you want to see the real Mexico, consider a
day off the beach! Adventure awaits at the Vallarta
Botanical Gardens which opened its gates just
seven years ago. Since then it has grown to become
one of Puerto Vallarta's most fabulous “must see”
tourist attractions. The Gardens are located in the
mountains at an elevation of 1,300 feet above sea
level where you will find a rejuvenating and much
cooler micro-climate that is always a delightful
surprise to Garden visitors.
The Gardens are a living museum showcasing
exceptional examples of the abundant natural
diversity of the region. As you enter the Gardens,
look for a sign that directs you to the swinging
bridge. Follow the iron handrail and lead yourself
through a pristine swath of old-growth tropical
forest in its full exuberant splendor. Along this trail
one will encounter the Chocolate, Coffee and
Vanilla Garden where living examples of each of
these plants can be viewed growing in the shadows
of giant forest trees.
Don’t miss the Holstein Conservatory of
Mexican Orchids. In this remarkable
conservatory, one can see many native Mexican
orchids in bloom, plus collections of carnivorous
plants, rare ferns, and other botanical curiosities.
The mountains are a bird watcher's delight with
many species of native birds easily seen from the
pathways. In the morning and again in the evening,
squawking groups of Lilac-Crowned Amazon
Parrots are active, wheeling through the skies
above.
Kingfishers ply the waters for tadpoles and
minnows in the sparkling Los Horcones River.

The emerald waters of the Los Horcones River
also provide excellent swimming and are famous
throughout the region for their rejuvenating
powers, so don’t forget to bring your swimsuit and
a towel!
The centerpiece of the Botanical Gardens is the
Visitor Center which is also the location of the
celebrated Hacienda de Oro Restaurant & Bar.
Ranch Style Mexican food and homemade
gourmet pizzas in a wood-burning brick oven are
famous specialties. Some of the most popular
cocktails served at the Gardens’ bar include their
Vanilla Bean Mojitos and Golden Cadillac
Margaritas. Created in the style of a tropical 18th
century plantation manor, the Hacienda sits atop a
jungle ridge overlooking the river and gardens.
This lovely natural oasis is surrounded by the
majesty of the soaring Sierra Madres in all
directions.
A memory that you are sure to cherish from
your experience in Puerto Vallarta is a trip to the
“Treasures of the Sierra Madre Mine” located in
the heart of the Gardens. Try your luck in
traditional frontier-style prospecting for real
Mexican gemstones. You may find amethyst,
quartz crystals, opal, tiger eye, calcite and more!
And you keep everything you find. A bucket of
mineral rich mine tailings is only $150 pesos.
If you'd like to see a different side of Puerto
Vallarta and one of the genuine treasures of the
city, then head out to the Gardens, located on
Palms to Pines Scenic Highway Route 200, just 30

Si desea ver el México real, ¡pase un día lejos
de la playa! Le espera una aventura en los Jardines
Botánicos de Vallarta, que fueron inaugurados
hace apenas siete años y que ya son uno de los más
fabulosos atractivos turísticos que simplemente
no se puede perder. Los Jardines están en las
montañas, a 400 metros sobre el nivel del mar y en
ellos encontrará un rejuvenecedor, y mucho más
fresco micro-clima que siempre sorprende
gratamente a quienes visitan los Jardines.
Los Jardines son un museo viviente que exhibe
excepcionales ejemplos de la abundante
diversidad natural de la región. Al entrar, busco un
letrero que lo dirige al puente colgante. Siga el

amanecer y, nuevamente, al anochecer, ruidosas
parvadas de Pericos de Cabeza Lila del Amazonas
están muy activos surcando el cielo.

would never think of rushing you on by delivering the
check before you ask for it. Sometimes this isn't so obvious
to our tourist friends who sit at their table wondering why
they just don't bring the bill! Say “La cuenta, por favor!”

! The age of consent is 18 years old. If you
meet someone and decide to go back to
your condo or hotel, insist on seeing their
ID. Child prostitution and pedophilia is a
very serious crime in Mexico. Protect
yourself and our community.
! Never carry drugs with you on the street.
Mexican law provides very severe
penalties for drug related crimes. It's not
worth the risk.
! If you're approached by a prostitute,
report it or leave the area as quickly as
possible. The local police are serious
about eradicating prostitution from our
streets. Don't risk your vacation.
! The police may not stop you and search
your person without cause. You have the
same rights as a citizen while visiting
Mexico.
! You cannot be stopped, harassed, or
arrested for holding hands or showing
moderate affection in public. But please
don't do anything you wouldn't want
your mother to see. “Sex on the beach” is a
drink, not a suggestion. It's also a crime,
just like it is in your own country.
