(the homily of John Paul during the Mass for the inauguration of his pontificate, the Vatican, 1978) (Homilía de Juan Pablo II durante la misa de inauguración del pontificado, Vaticano, 1978). XXXI Światowe Dni Młodzieży 2016 to wielkie święto młodości – wielkie święto wszystkich młodych duchem, przepełnionych radością Ducha Świętego. To Wasze Święto. Rok później spotkania te nabrały cyklicznego charakteru i przybrały nazwę „Światowych Dni Młodzieży”. Od 2003 roku wraz Krzyżem Światowych Dni Młodzie- The 31st World Youth Day 2016 is a great feast of youth – a great feast of all those who are young in their spirit, who are filled with the joy of the Holy Ghost. This is your feast. This idea was born from the need of the hearts. Pope John Paul II also discerned the potential latent in each person. He also saw a huge need of the youth to express themselves, their emotions and needs. He always listened attentively to what the youth wanted to tell him. He always found the time for them. In consequence of his open attitude to youth, Saint John Paul II invited young people to Rome on Palm Sunday of the Year of the Redemption (1984). At the close of their visit, the Polish Pope gave a symbol to the young – the World Youth Day Cross – for them to carry it throughout the world as a sign of the love of Christ. In the International Year of the Youth (1985), the young visited Saint John Paul II again. After a year these meetings took on a cyclical character and assumed the name of “World Youth Day”. From that time a meeting with the Holy Father was held every year. Thus, the idea of a common conversation and prayer is continued. This is the time which the Pope has for the youth and the youth has for God, the Holy Father and themselves. W dniach 26–31 lipca 2016 r. Kraków, miasto św. Jana Pawła II i św. Nawołuje do „nawrócenia ekologicznego”. W tej pięknej pieśni przypomniał, że nasz wspólny dom jest jak siostra, z którą dzielimy istnienie, i jak piękna matka, biorąca nas w ramiona: „Pochwalony bądź, mój Panie, przez siostrę naszą, leads to Christ, has made its pilgrimage through the world, along with the World Youth Day Cross. World Youth Day is held every year in cities all over the world. On 26-31 July 2016, Cracow, the city of Saint John Paul II and Saint Faustina Kowalska, will host pilgrims from all over the world who will pray and praise God together here. In his message for this year’s celebrations, Pope Francis encourages people to do works of mercy, including forgiving one’s neighbours. “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” (Mt 5,7) is the motto that the Holy Father has chosen for this year’s celebrations which will crown the Jubilee Year of Mercy. Pope Francis also emphasises the need to be merciful towards our environment. The encyclical of the Holy Father Francis entitled “On care for our common home. Laudato si” is the first encyclical devoted to such a large extent to the natural environment. The Holy Father points out how important the sustainable development of the world is, at the centre of which there is man who needs environmental resources to live, but also respects nature. The Pope calls for “ecological conversion”. He discerns the growing environmental sensitivity, but also expresses his concern about the further fate of the planet. “Laudato si’, mi’ Signore – Praise be to you, my Lord”, Saint Francis of Assisi sang. In this beautiful song he reminded that our common home was like a sister with whom we shared our life and like a beautiful mother who opened her arms to em- mos. Następnie zachęcał do globalnego «nawrócenia ekologicznego» [5]. Prawdziwy rozwój człowieka ma charakter mo- brace us: “Praise be to you, my Lord, through our sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us, and who produces various fruit with coloured flowers and herbs” [1]. It should also be recalled that Saint John Paul II also called many times for the common care of the natural environment. “In his first Encyclical he warned that «human beings frequently seem to see no other meaning in their natural environment than what serves for immediate use and consumption» [4]. Subsequently, he would call for a global «ecological conversion» [5]. At the same time, he noted that little effort had been made «to safeguard the moral conditions for an authentic “human ecology”».[6] The destruction of the human environment is extremely serious, not only because God has entrusted the world to us men and women, but because human life is itself a gift which must be defended from various forms of debasement. Realizacja postulatów zrównoważonego rozwoju, o których mowa w encyklice ties».[7] Authentic human development has a moral character. It presumes full respect for the human person, but it must also be concerned for the world around us and «take into account the nature of each being and of its mutual connection in an ordered system».[8] Accordingly, our human ability to transform reality must proceed in line with God’s original gift of all that is”. [9].” (Laudato si’) Continuing the work of Saint John Paul II, Pope Francis devotes a good deal of attention and concern to nature conservation. He speaks of the necessity of a global agreement which should lead to sustainable and diversified agriculture, the better management of forest and marine resources, the promotion of energy efficiency and ensuring access to drinking for everybody. The postulates of the Encyclical are particularly close to the Poles. We take care of the sustainable development of our Fatherland, with respect for the resources of the natural environment. Polish agriculture, forestry and hunting cooperate with one another and, when using the environmental resources which are necessary for man, they are always guided by the care of nature. In Poland, we rationally use forest resources. Due to such actions, there was a huge growth of species which had already long ago vanished from the map of Western Europe. In strict cooperation with forestry and agriculture, Polish hunting has acquired and acquires large quantities of healthy food, without causing a decrease in the abundance of game animals. Warunkuje zdrowe i bezpieczne życie przyszłych pokoleń. Prawdziwą pamiątkę schowajcie też w swoich sercach i duszach. Niech będą nią wspomnienia chwil, ludzi, odczuć i widoków. the “Laudato si” Encyclical is not only a chance for improving the state of the natural environment, but also a hope for a man who lives due to environmental resources. The “care for our common home” is, thus, a condition for a dignified life of each of us. It is a condition for the healthy and safe life of the future generations. Let this publication be a keepsake to remind you the gift of Pope Francis – the designation of Poland to host the 31st World Youth Day. At the same time, let it remind you of the role of man in the world: the Man – Gardener not only creates and forms his environment, but also takes care of life in any manifestation of it, while the care for the welfare of beings and the welfare of the natural environment is one of the most important tasks of everyday life. Keep the real keepsake in your hearts and souls. Małopolski Szlak Papieski prowadzi z Krakowa i Kalwarii Zebrzydowskiej przez Beskidy, Gorce i Tatry Małopolska consists of hundreds of extraordinary places with their own history, tradition and contemporary features. It is worth living for, it is worth writing about, it is worth looking on how it changes, because its beauty and riches are exceptional. Małopolskie Voivodship is the most diversified Voivodship in Poland in terms of the relief of the terrain. Mountains and uplands occupy more than half of its surface area. The diversified relief of the terrain, the geological structure and the climate and soil conditions have brought about the diversity of nature and landscapes. Almost the whole of Małopolska is situated in the Vistula River basin and the catchment of the Baltic Sea. It is in Małopolska that you can hike along the most famous mountain walking paths, such as Orla Perć in the Tatra Mountains, Sokola Perć in the Pieniny Mountains, or Perć Akademików in the Babia Góra massif. If someone does not know what the word “perć” means…, it is a mountain path for sheep and shepherds, as well as a path which has been trodden by chamois. Towards north from Cracow, you will find the do Starego Sącza. Następnie zaczęły powstawać tu kościoły, klasztory oraz inne ośrodki, które stały się Trail of the Eagles’ Nest and of the Jurassic Strongholds. The Małopolski Papal Trail leads us from Cracow and Kalwaria Zebrzydowska via Beskidy, Gorce and Tatra Mountains to Stary Sącz. These sites have been frequently visited by Karol Wojtyła in the past. W Tatrach można zobaczyć szarotkę alpejską i kozicę – symbole środowiska niezmienionego działalnością człowieka. Szlaki piesze, rowerowe i samochodowe ułożone w gęstą sieć, umożliwiają dotarcie do niemal wszystkich najpiękniejszych zakątków, w tym atrakcyjnych kulturowo regionów wiejskich, słynących z rękodzieła i kulinariów. In the Tatra Mountains, edelweiss and chamois can be seen – symbols of the environment which has not been changed by human activities. In the south, there are also natural sources of mineral waters with beneficial health properties. Where these sources are located heath resorts have been established and in Małopolska there are exceptionally many of them. Walking, cycling and driving trails make up a dense network, making it possible to reach almost all the most beautiful spots, including the rural areas with their rich culture, which are famous for their handicrafts and cuisine. W 2002 roku mówił m.in. tak: JPII: Od pierwszego spotkania tu, w tym oknie, minęły 23 lata i mnie 23 lata przy- Cracow has a special place in the region of Małopolska. For several centuries Cracow, rather than Warsaw, was the capital of Poland. Cracow is not only a centre of science and the seat of many cultural institutions, but first of all it is the city of Saint John Paul II. In the summer of 1938, it was exactly in Cracow that the young Karol Wojtyła started his Polish philology studies. He resided at 10 Tyniecka Street in the Cracow District of Dębniki. You should visit the Bishop’s Palace situated in Franciszkańska Street, or the Cracow Theological Seminary where the future Pope studied. When you are there you will feel as if you have already been there. You are right. It was exactly there, in the famous Papal Window, that John Paul II was engaged until late at night in his famous dialogues with youth. At times he would even stand on the window sill. E.g. in 2002 he said this: były. “JP II: 23 years have passed since the first meeting here, in this window, and I am 23 years older. And those who, 23 years ago, were here under this window in Franciszkańska Street are also 23 years older! Youth: They are young, too! JPII: I Pietrek, co tu stoi, też mu te 23 lata przybyło. Nic nie poradzimy. Jest tylko jedna rada na to. To jest Pan Jezus. «Jam jest zmartwychwstanie i życie», to znaczy — pomimo starości, pomimo śmierci — młodość w Bogu. I tego wam wszystkim życzę. Całej młodzieży krakowskiej i polskiej, i na świecie. Młodzież: Kochamy Ciebie! Pobłogosław! JPII: Dziękuję wam za odwiedziny. Przyjdźcie jutro znów! Na dziś i na jutro niech wam Bóg błogosławi. W imię Ojca i Syna, i Ducha Świętego. Amen. Z Bogiem! Warto znaleźć chwilę, aby obejrzeć jeden z największych ołtarzy gotyckich w Europie autorstwa Wita Stwosza z drugiej połowy XV wieku. Można go zobaczyć w Kościele Mariackim – Bazylice Najświętszej Marii Panny. Na terenie miasta znajdują się niewielkie obszary wchodzące w skład Zespołu JP II: There is nothing we can do about it! If they are young, then they are young. It cannot be otherwise. Youth : «Happy birthday »... JP II: And Pete who is standing here is also 23 years older. There is nothing we can do about it. There is only one way to deal with it. It is the Lord Jesus. «I am the resurrection and the life», which means — despite the old age, despite death — youth in God. And this is what I wish to all of you. The whole youth in Cracow, and in Poland, and in the world. Youth: We love you! Bless us! JP II: Thank you for your visit. Come again tomorrow. God bless you for today and tomorrow. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Go with God!” You should find some time to see one of the largest Gothic altars in Europe, a wooden altar by Wit Stwosz from the second half of the 15th century. It can be seen at St. Mary’s Church – the Basilica of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary. The altar sculptures show scenes from the Holy Writ. You must absolutely climb to the highest scenic point in Cracow – a tower about 80 m tall which you can visit when you are at the Sanctuary of the Divine Mercy. Pope John Paul II declared this Sanctuary to be the World Centre of Mercy. There are few cities in the world within which nature reserves are located. Cracow is exactly one of them. In it, we have as many as 5 nature reserves, including: Bielańskie Skałki, Bonarka (a geological reserve), Panieńskie Skały (a Jurassic ravine Jóvenes: «Cien años de vida»... “Since the earliest days of my life, even since my childhood, Cracow has been for me a special synthesis of all things which are Polish and which are Christian.” These are fragments of Bielańsko-Tyniecki and Tenczyński Parks, Dolinki Krakowskie Landscape Park and their buffer zones. Not far from the centre of Cracow, on the right-hand side of the Vistula River, Jurassic limestone elevations, called Tynieckie Hills, surround Tyniec. Liczne warownie i świetnie utrzymane pozostałości zamków słynnego Szlaku Orlich Gniazd: w Ogrodzieńcu, Będzinie, Korzkwi, Babicach, Pieskowej Skale i Ojcowie. The oldest part of Cracow is surrounded by Planty – a city park with a surface area of 21.03 ha situated right in the centre of the city. This green ring is of one the largest parks in the city. In turn, Błonia is the only 48-hectare meadow in Poland within the city limits. It is exactly here that four times crowds of the faithful welcomed Pope John Paul II. The king of the Polish castles is Wawel, the most famous Polish medieval building and the place where Polish rulers were crowned and buried. The castle is open to tourists who admire the royal chambers, the armoury, the treasury, the crypt of the national poet-prophets, royal tombs or the karstic cave with a sculpture of the fire-breathing Wawel dragon which stands at the entrance to the cave. North of Cracow, there are other interesting tourist attractions of the Cracow-Częstochowa Upland. They include numerous strongholds and perfectly well preserved remnants of the castles on the famous Trail of the Eagles’ Nests: in Ogrodzieniec, Będzin, Korzkiew, Babice, Pieskowa Skała and Ojców. A characteristic feature of the landscape of the Upland, which is protected by the Ojców National Park, are limestone rocks with fabulous shapes, including perhaps the most famous Hercules’ Bludgeon, which stands, as it were, against the laws of nature. The sunlit rocks not only delight with their appearance, but also provide a habitat for many rare plants and animals. Bats seek shelter in the local caves. Some of the caves are open to visitors, including e.g. the King Łokietek Cave, where, according to a legend, this famous Polish king would hide. en el pleno centro de Cracovia, con una superficie de 21,03 hectáreas. Jan Paweł II podczas ostatniej pielgrzymki do Polski. It is the home town of Saint John Paul II. It was here that on 18 May 1920 the Polish Pope was born and until 1938 he lived at 7 Kościelna Street. The Holy Father also spoke with a special fondness about his home town. “Still, I always return to this town feeling that I am expected here as I would be at my family home,” Saint John Paul II said during his last pilgrimage to Poland. In Wadowice there is a museum where you can see memorabilia from the life of the Holy Father. When you visit Wadowice be sure to have the famous “papal cream cakes” which the Holy Father relished so much. Pielgrzymka w wielickich podziemiach to wspaniałe kaplice, wykute w soli sakralne rzeźby, unikalne widoki. Piękne komory, korytarze i przejścia. Wieliczka, which is situated at a distance of almost 15 km from the centre of Cracow, is famous for its 700 years old, historic Salt Mine. It is exactly at the Salt Mine that at a depth of 101 m below the ground level the largest underground church in the world functions. In 1978, when the Polish Pope was elected in the Holy See, the “Wieliczka” Salt Mines were inscribed onto the First UNESCO World Heritage List of Natural and Cultural Sites (as one of the first 12 sites all over the world) and, it is interesting to note, salt is still produced here. In Wieliczka, pilgrims can see underground magnificent chapels, religious sculptures cut in salt, unique views. Beautiful chambers, corridors and passages. Here, the faith gives the strength to take each next step. On the occasion of World Youth Day, the Mine extends the visiting hours and has prepared a number of amenities for the pilgrims. Chodząc krętymi górskimi ścieżkami, zauważycie czasem pięknie wkomponowane w krajobraz ślady działalności człowieka: szałasy, koliby, pomniki, tablice, krzyże i kapliczki. Mijając je, warto poznać ich historię. W Tatrzańskim Parku Narodowym zabytki sakralne są niezmiernie ważne In the Tatra Mountains, there are the highest peaks in Poland, its deepest caves and deep glacial lakes which remain frozen for half a year. Due to this, in the Polish Tatra Mountains you can find many natural treasures which cannot be encountered in other parts of the country. The features which are characteristic of this area include stone pine forests, plentiful blooming edelweiss, saxifrage, gentian and pasque flowers. It is only here that chamois, alpine marmots, European snow voles and bears live their quiet lives. It is only in the Tatra Mountains that wall creepers build their nests in rock crevices and golden eagles look so majestic against the background of inaccessible alps. The Tatra Mountains are a place where highlanders, who are famous for their centuries long shepherding tradition and their struggle to survive on the rocky ground, live in a symbiosis with the natural environment. To a large extent, the natural and cultural heritage is protected by the Tatra National Park. The Gorce Mountains is a mountain range situated in the West Beskid Mountains. The name of “Gorce” is probably related to the word “gorzeć” („to burn”) and refers to the manner of achieving forest clearings by the burning out method. The wooded, not so high mountains are intersected by deep stream ravines. The Carpathian primeval forest fauna and flora are well preserved in the Gorce National Park. Here, wolves and lynxes do not find it difficult to hunt down a deer, roe deer, wild boar or hare. The beauty of the Gorce clearings is equal to that of high alpine meadows and crocuses abound in them in the spring. The forests conceal the relics from the not-too-distant dramatic history, partisans’ graves and the remains of the sheds where they once found shelter. The quiet and silence provide opportunities for a personal contact with nature. Glades are extremely attractive in this region of Poland. They formed as a result of shepherding. Sheds which remain even today are living evidence to the beauty of regional Podhale and Zagórze building. Jan Paweł II 34 “Whenever I can go into the mountains and admire the mountain landscapes I thank God for the majesty and beauty of the created world. I thank Him for His own beauty, a reflection of which, as it were, is the universe, which can fascinate the sensitive minds and incite them to adore the divine grandeur. In the mountains, we not only find magnificent views to be admired, but also a school of life. Here, we learn to cope with hardships in working towards our goal, to help one another in the difficult moments, to enjoy the silence together, to recognise one’s smallness in the face of the majesty and dignity of the mountains.” “You come here to the mountains to face a certain geographical reality which is greater than we are and encourages us to accept this attitude, to overcome ourselves. And you can see these hikers, tourists, alpinists, those who more often than not climb like heroes, who – following a mute word, a majestic word, the eternal expression of the mountains – go, climb and overcome themselves to reach the peaks.” These rocky mountains, hidden between the Gorce, Tatra and Beskid Mountains, have long attracted attention with their picturesqueness which is underlined by the checkerboard of the arable fields at their base. It was exactly in the Pieniny Mountains that in 1932 the area-specific nature conservation was introduced in the Polish lands. Among the natural treasures in this region, it is absolutely necessary to mention apollo butterfly. In our lands, this rare and beautiful butterfly has survived only in the Pieniny Mountains, also as a result of its breeding by the staff of the Pieniny National Park. They take their guests - tourists – into the world of wild nature, legends and stories about what is important and fundamental for them. A special place in the Pieniny Mountains which is related to John Paul II is the Papieżówka glade. The Pieniny Mountains are minute. Compared with them the Beskid Mountains are as big as a whole province and the Tatra Mountains are as big as the Himalayas. But it is they that are considered to be the most friendly Polish mountains. They are sunny and familiar. They strike a wonderful balance between the terror of towering rocks and an idyllic picture on the wall. It is not more than just a dozen or so kilometres long limestone hills. With all this extremely rich nature which seems as if someone has managed to contain the Apennine Peninsula in his garden. Magurski Park Narodowy chroni zalesione pasma Magury Małastowskiej i Wątkowskiej. To jedyna góra w całym paśmie, której szczyt sięga wysoko ponad górną granicę lasu i kosodrzewiny. The Beskid Niski Mountains are the lowest fragment of the Polish part of the Carpathian arc. The Magura National Park protects the wooded ridges of Mount Magura Małastowska and the Magura Wątkowska massif. The wooded ranges of gentle hills rose here above the extensive meadows and arable fields of the local villages with small populations. This area is a good habitat for lesser spotted eagles. The Beskid Niski Mountains are also an area where different cultures intermingle. The interesting sites include in particular the monuments of the Ruthenian culture, such as small wooden Orthodox churches. Mount Babia Góra, the central part of the Babia Góra National Park, is called the Queen of the Beskid Mountains. It is the only mountain with a peak reaching above the upper forest and mountain pine limits. It is capped with glades with alpine plants which cannot be found even in the Tatra Mountains. Its elevation is 1,725 m a.s.l., causing differentiated climate conditions and affecting the habitat conditions. They distinctly change as the elevation above sea level grows, causing a vertical differentiation of the plant cover. As a result, climate and vegetation belts can be distinguished on Mount Babia Góra. It often hides in the clouds, even when the sun is shining, and for this reason it has also been called the Mother of Bad Weather. Due to its loftiness and relative isolation, it can also be admired from afar. When you go deeper into the beech, fir and spruce woods on Mount Babia Góra, you will reach spots which look as if they have never been touched by man, although traces of the past activities of the local residents intermingle here with nature. Wierzchołek Śnieżki wystaje wysoko ponad bezleśne górskie równiny zwane wierzchowiną, porośnięte roślinnością do złudzenia przypominającą arktyczną tundrę. Niżej zbocza Karkonoszy opadają stromo w dół, do skalnych kotłów. Silesia is a Polish region with exceptional natural values. This results primarily from a substantial diversity of natural habitats, the impact of the Moravian Gate and the relatively warm climate. It includes the Karkonosze National Park which protects the highest part of the Sudety Mountains, with its highest peak – Mount Śnieżką (Snowy). The mountain truly deserves this name, because there is very much snow in the Karkonosze Mountains. The peak of Mount Śnieżka towers high above the woodless mountain plains, called “wierzchowina” (a flat mountain top), which are overgrown by vegetation closely resembling the Arctic tundra. At lower elevations, the slopes of the Karkonosze Mountains steeply fall into rocky cirques. Thousands of years ago these cirques were filled with glaciers and now two of them house lovely mountain ponds. Unique geological formations, the sandstones of Mount Szczeliniec which had been fabulously shaped by nature, were like a magnet which attracted people when tourism was still budding. To miejsce wyjątkowe w historii i kulturze Polaków. The forests of the Stołowe Mountains have been quite strongly transformed by man but also provide shelter to numerous fauna species. The mountain peat-bogs are overgrown, among others, by mountain pines. These places are protected by the Stołowe Mountains National Park. When you visit Silesia you absolutely must go to the Sanctuary on Jasna Góra (the Monastery of the Pauline Fathers). This is a special place in the history and culture of the Poles. This is a destination of pilgrims from all over the world, particularly around 15 August, i.e. the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On Jasna Góra, we can see picturesque embankments and bastions, which used to protect the monastery and now serve as a walkway and the Way of the Cross. vez, las grietas en las rocas se convirtieron en hábitat para los murciélagos, siendo también un lugar ideal para los nidos de los búhos reales, los más grandes de Europa. Jasna Góra is the sanctuary of the nation. (The homily of John Paul II during the Holy Mass celebrated at the foot of Jasna Góra, Częstochowa, 4 June 1979) “Do you know how these Fathers and Brothers in white habits who are so busy on Jasna Góra are called? They are called Paulines, the sons of St. Paul the Hermit. The sons of St. Paul the Hermit and hermits themselves – we have arranged quite a hermitage for them!” Brodziec krwawodzioby (Tringa totanus) It is an extraordinary part of Poland. The Warta River Mouth National Park is called “the Bird Kingdom”. The protection of birds and the habitats where they live provides the basis for the functioning of the Park. It is exactly here in Słońsk that “the Bird Republic” has its seat – it is an association of persons who consider this part of Poland to be a joint property of birds and human beings. Bird lovers from all over Europe come here in the different seasons of the year to watch the passages, arrivals and departures of the birds gathering here. The wetlands on the Warta River are of key importance for many bird species. Their specific hydrological conditions and human management (land amelioration, grass cutting and grazing) in the Warta River valley and its mouth section have created a mosaic of wetland habitats. This area is important for birds both in the breeding period, in the period when they teach their young and in the winter. It seems that any greater avian diversity cannot be found anywhere else in Poland. The Warta River Mouth National Park is situated at the western border of Poland, in a part of the Torun-Eberswalde Ice Marginal Streamway, called the Gorzów Basin. Jej dno pokrywa żwir i piasek. The Drawa is a mysterious river which, as lowland rivers usually do, flows quite lazily for the most part of its 200 km course. However, there are sections where it becomes restless and resembles submontane rivers. Its bed is covered by gravel and sand. If you are quiet you will certainly meet many beavers on your travel routes. After some distance the river becomes gentle again and the bed is overgrown by underwater meadows. These places are protected by the Drawa National Park. The kayaking trip down the Drawa River is the main attraction of the Park. In the Drawa National Park, there are natural habitats of importance for the European Community. 51 Bóbr europejski (Castor fiber) Podkarpackie 52 Najbardziej na południe wysunięty chroniony skrawek Polski to Bieszczadzki Park Narodowy. Obejmuje on najwyższą część Bieszczadów, ze słynącymi z urody połoninami. The southernmost protected area of Poland is the Bieszczady National Park. It occupies the highest part of the Bieszczady Mountains, with their polonina meadows which are famous for their beauty. These meadows have no equivalents in any other Polish mountains. The Bieszczady forests, dominated by beech woods which become red in the autumn, seem to be wild, but as a matter of fact there are abundant traces of past human activities. In earlier times these areas used to be much more densely populated. Today the remains of abandoned villages are used by bears which have settled in the Bieszczady Mountains after years of their absence. In the Bieszczady Mountains, there are plants and animals which cannot be encountered in other parts of Poland, particularly those that like warmth, e.g. the largest European aesculapian snake. European bison were domesticated here by man. At present, this is the only place in Poland where bears and European bison have a chance to meet and resolve in a real fight the dilemma which of them deserves to be called the king of the Carpathian forests. If you look for solitude, extraordinary, tough people and unique landscapes, the Bieszczady Mountains are certainly an ideal place for you. The Świętokrzyskie (Holy Cross) Mountains are the oldest Polish mountains and the Świętokrzyski National Park occupies the highest part of them. The name of the mountains comes from the relic of the Holy Cross kept at the Benedectine monastery on Mount Łysa Góra on which Jesus Christ supposedly died. The name of Łysogóry, as the highest part of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains are sometimes called comes from “gołoborze”, i.e. rock debris uncovered by vegetation which is situated on the slopes of these mountains overgrown by the Fir Forest. One of the trails to Mount Łysa Góra begins from the stone Pilgrim, called St. Emeric. There are many legends related to this statute. According to the most popular one, the pilgrim turned into stone for his pride when he said that the bells in the monastery on Mount Święty Krzyż tolled to honour him. Ever since the statue has moved by one grain of sand per year and when it reaches the peak the world will end. Another important tree species, though much rarer than fir, which is protected by the Świętokrzyski National Park is Polish larch. In order to protect it, already almost 100 years ago, the nature reserve was established on Mount Chełmowa Góra, from which the National Park developed. Despite later war damage, more than 300 Polish larches grow there, with their thickness exceeding 1.5 m. In the Park, there is a 51 m tall fir which is considered to be one of the tallest trees in Poland. 56 Żółw błotny (Emys orbicularis) Although Polesie does not lie in the north of Poland, it seems to bring the far North to one’s mind to the greatest extent among the Polish regions. The peat-bogs here and the forests which grow on them, protected by the Polesie National Park, greatly resemble Siberia. This region is considered to be an example of the Arctic tundra and forest-tundra. The plants to be found here include many species characteristic of the north of Europe, e.g. downy willow and Siberian iris. The fauna is also very rich. In particular, there are many rare and relict species of invertebrates related to peat-bogs. The mud turtle is the most interesting vertebrate. Recently, in the Polesie National Park extraordinary “houses for insects” appeared - they are tree beehives. They are drilled holes in wooden logs where forest bees spontaneously find their home. The bees play a very important role in forest ecosystems. They pollinate many species of trees, shrubs and forest undergrowth plants. The Roztocze National Park is the most wooded national park in Poland as forest land represents 95.5% of the surface area of the Park. The greatest attraction of the Park is the breeding of Polish ponies. Today Polish ponies live in a special refuge in the Park just as tarpans – their free and wild predecessors – did and they are fed by man only in winter. 57 58 59 „Tu z wyjątkową mocą zdaje się przemawiać błękit nieba, zieleń lasów i pól, srebro jezior i rzek. Tu śpiew ptaków brzmi szczególnie znajomo, po polsku.” (homilia Jana Pawła II, Zamość, 12 czerwca 1999 r.) „Here the blue of the sky, the green of forests and fields, the silver of lakes and rivers seem to speak with an exceptional force. Here the song of birds sounds particularly familiar, Polish.” To tu św. Kampinoski Park Narodowy utworzono, aby tę puszczę chronić, by nie pochłonął jej gąszcz ulic i budynków, by jeszcze długo służyła miastu i jego mieszkańcom. Puszcza Kampinoska to puszcza na naj- Warsaw, the capital of Poland, is the seat of the authorities, the President, Parliament (consisting of the Lower House (Sejm) and the Senate), the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers. The Okęcie Airport, seemingly ordinary, is a special place. It is here that St. John Paul II made a gesture which became part of world history and was a permanent element of all of His pilgrimages. It is here that most pilgrimages of John Paul II to Poland started. On 2 June 1979, during His first visit, the Pope kissed the native soil after leaving the plane. This gesture – recognised all over the world – began each pilgrimage of the Pope. Compared with other European capitals, Warsaw is distinguished by its rich greenery in parks and gardens, such as the Łazienki Royal Park, the palace and garden complex in Wilanów or the Botanical Garden in Powsin. Warsaw is the only European capital which lies next to a genuine primeval forest. The Kampinos National Park was established to protect the primeval forest, to prevent it from being taken over by a maze of streets and buildings and to ensure that Varsovia, capital de Polonia, es sede de autoridades, presidente, parlamento (Sejm y Senat), primer ministro y Consejo de Ministros. They are overgrown by broadleaved and coniferous forests and peat-bog vegetation. By chronić przyrodę regionu, utworzono Wielkopolski Park Narodowy. (przemówienie Jana Pawła II do pielgrzymów, Gniezno, 3 czerwca 1979 r.) Wielkopolskie Voivodship is situated in the central western part of Poland. Poznań is the capital of the Voivodship. Wielkopolska (Greater Poland) arose as a result of the expansion of the West Slavic tribe of Polans in the 10th century, creating the foundations for the Polish statehood. The name of our country came from them. At that time, the first capital was Gniezno in Wielkopolska. Wielkopolskie Voivodship is famous for its Lake Lednica, situated in the Gniezno Lake District, where probably the Baptism of Poland took place in 966. In order to protect the nature in the region, the Wielkopolska National Park was established here. Its purpose is the protect the landscape shaped by the impact of the continental glacier which reached here tens of thousands of years ago from Scandinavia. Today glacial lakes, hidden among well preserved forests, are genuine jewels of the Park. To żeglowna droga wodna o całkowitej długości 151,7 kilometra. This region is famous for its beautiful lakes well composed into the forest landscape, including 8 landscape parks, 104 nature reserves and the primeval forests: Napiwodzko-Ramucka, Nidzicka, Piska, Romincka and Borecka Forests. In the Land of the Thousand Lakes, which occupies the central part of the Mazurian Lake District, there are almost 2,600 lakes, which are connected by Mazurian canals. Here, you can see the largest lakes in Poland: Śniardwy (113.8 km²) and Mamry (105 km²). The Great Mazurian Lakes are famous for their habitats of rare birds, such as cormorant, great crested grebe, mute swan, heron, black stork, coot, black kit, golden eagle and white-tailed eagle. You can also meet here river otter, beaver, mud turtle, elk and many bat or dragonfly species. In the autumn, the attraction of the region is the rutting season. It also has nature reserves, including the largest and oldest one in the region: the Mazurian Landscape Park. Mazury is the finalist of the competition for New 7 Wonders of the World. In 2011, the Elblag Canal was declared a monument of history by the President of the Republic of Poland. It is a navigable waterway with a total length of 151.7 kilometres. The canal includes lakes with the difference between levels reaching 100 metres. A peculiarity at the European level is the complex of 5 ramps where vessels are rolled down on special platforms. 67 Podlasie „Ja tu u Was byłem. Pilnujcie mi tych szlaków”. Św. Jan Paweł II “I was here with you. Guard these trails for me” St. John Paul II “Yo estuve aquí. The Białowieża National Park is probably the best known Polish national park in the world. The Białowieża Forest was chosen as the site of reintroduction of European bison into nature. This task was carried out with a great success. Today, the largest free roaming herd of these animals in the world lives here. Bison is the most powerful but not the only exceptionally valuable dweller of the Forest. Huge trees which create unique ecosystems themselves are home to many organisms which cannot be met in ordinary forests. The Białowieża Forest, together with the Knyszyńska, Kurpiowska, Augustowska, Romincka and Borecka Forests, as well as the lakes in the northern Suwałki region, constitute the so-called Green Lungs of Poland. The Białowieża Forest is a unique example at the world scale of the cultural and natural heritage of the local population. The Biebrza River which flows near Białowieża is almost completely covered by the protection in the Biebrza National Park. W dolinie rzeki, jednym z ostatnich ptasich azyli w Europie, można spotkać dubelta, wodniczkę, cietrzewia, sowę błotną i orlika grubodziobego. Najlepiej zwiedzać go drogą wodną, spływając kajakiem lub charakterystyczną łodzią zwaną pychówka. The Biebrza swamps live due to the river which floods the adjacent land every spring like the Nile. For the most part of the year this area is practically inaccessible to humans and as a result it has become a convenient habitat for many rare species. The Biebrza swamps were the last pace in Poland where elk survived a period of excessive hunting. This is the largest national park in Poland with a surface area of 59,223 ha. You can meet here great snipe, aquatic warbler, black grouse, short-eared owl and spotted eagle for which the valley is one of the last bird refuges in Europe. The Narew River flowing through north-eastern Poland is a specific river which does not run in the main channel, but often separates into smaller channels, only to integrate again into one whole. Its branches create a true water maze. It is the only anastomosing or braided river in Europe, which creates a network of branched, parallel channels, from Suraż to Rzędziany. The Narew National Park protects exactly this inimitable section of the Narew River, called “the Polish Amazon”. It is best to visit the Narew National Park by water, in a kayak or a characteristic “punt”. It is moved by a special long oar which is pushed against the river bed. Hardly anyone remembers today that in the middle of the 20th century beavers were almost completely exterminated. The area of Lake Wigry and the Czarna Hańcza River are some of the few places where traces of their presence could still be seen. On the site which is now part of the Wigry National Park, at that time two nature re- en primavera se desborda como el Nilo. Ważne jest, aby przemierzając te przepiękne okolice, znaleźć czas na rozważanie wielkiego przesłania, jakie zostawił nam Jan Paweł II w „Tajemnicach Światła”. serves were then established to protect beavers. They lived so well here that in time they began to be caught and moved to other areas of the country. Today beavers live almost throughout Poland, but the Wigry National Park, together with the remainder of the Suwałki Lake District and the Augustowska Forest, deserve to be called their true refuge. It is here in Wigry, in a post-Camedolite monastery, that John Paul II rested for several days during his pilgrimage to his homeland. It was in June 1999. Between Ełk and Wigry you can travel down the Papal Trail of the Mysteries of Light. This is a special opportunity to become acquainted with God, the history and nature of the beautiful lands in Mazury and those around Augustów, Sejny and Suwałki, on a route about 170 km long, going through picturesque towns and villages, the Augustowska Forest, nature reserves and the Wigry National Park. The particular stages of this year-round Papal Trail can be travelled in different ways: walking or cycling and skiing in the winter. When you travel through these beautiful areas you need to find the time to reflect on the great message which John Paul II left to us in the Mysteries of Light. Stanowi unikalny przykład kulturowego i przyrodniczego dziedzictwa. Około 15 procent jej powierzchni zajmuje Park Narodowy. For ages, a man has managed this area, obtaining resources from the local forests. As early as in the 16th century, the royal privileges allowed hunting, fishing, logging, timber rafting and bee-keeping in the Białowieża Forest. These were the local communities supported by cultural, religious and ethnical richness they had brought that have formed the Forest. These forests constitute their heritage. Today, the entire Białowieża Forest is an issueof particular concern for the Polish State. Approximately 15% of its area is covered by the Białowieża National Park. Longstanding experience of the foresters has helped them preserving beauty of the Białowieża Forest for the future generations. Although their impacts are slow, but they are persistent. They can destroy, but they can also build. The Łeba Sandbar in the Słowiński National Park emerged from the sand deposited by the sea. Today the same sand creates moving dunes which can move even 10 metres. The moving sand hills with their height reaching 40 m cover forests. After years pass dead tree trunks come out of the sand and pioneering grass species try to colonise the sand. When they manage to consolidate the ground, soil begins to form, other plants and shrubs appear and finally a forest grows. The best preserved fragment of the nature on this island is protected by the Wolin National Park. The Park extends beyond the land, reaching far into the sea. It also includes the area of coastal waters; for this reason it has been called the first marine park in Poland. Przemawia ono do człowieka szczególną mową. (…) Do wielu ludów i narodów.” 76 (homilia Jana Pawła II podczas liturgii słowa, Gdynia, 11 czerwca 1987) 77 “The sea... It speaks to man in a special language. (…) Indeed, it is through this far vista which opens to a man standing on the shore, then in front of the eyes of a sailor on the open seas, that a road leads to any places in the world, to countries and continents. To many peoples and nations”. (The homily of John Paul II during the Liturgy of the Word, Gdynia, 11 June 1987) “El Mar... (…)” (Laudato si’, 12). Troska o dobrostan Bożego stworzenia to wymagające i poważne zadanie. “(…) Saint Francis, faithful to Scripture, invites us to see nature as a magnificent book in which God speaks to us and grants us a glimpse of his infinite beauty and goodness. «Through the greatness and the beauty of creatures one comes to know by analogy their maker» (Wis 13,5); indeed, «his eternal power and divinity have been made known through his works since the creation of the world» (Rom 1,20). (…)” (Laudato si, 12). The care of the welfare of God’s creatures is a demanding and responsible task. However, instilling in young hearts the solidarity-based responsibility for the state of the environment is the hope for the world and for the future generations. Laudato si: “217. «The external deserts in the world are growing, because the internal deserts have become so vast» [152]. For this reason, the ecological crisis is also a summons to profound interior conversion. It must be said that some committed and prayerful Christians, with the excuse of realism and pragmatism, tend to ridicule expressions of concern for the environment. Others are passive; they choose not to change their habits and thus be- “(…) Oni sami chcą, by być wymagającym wobec nich. Niech XXXI Światowe Dni Młodzieży pozostawią w pamięci pielgrzymów wspaniałe wspomnienia, aby wyruszyli w dalszą drogę z bagażem nowych, dobrych doświadczeń oraz pamięcią pięknych krajobrazów polskiej przyrody. come inconsistent. So what they all need is an “ecological conversion”, whereby the effects of their encounter with Jesus Christ become evident in their relationship with the world around them. Living our vocation to be protectors of God’s handiwork is essential to a life of virtue; it is not an optional or a secondary aspect of our Christian experience.” In his homily in 2002 St. John Paul emphasised: “You need to joke with young people. But you also need to be both very serious and very demanding. They themselves want us to be demanding towards them. When you are serious and very demanding, when you give the basic answers, you must also know how to enjoy, be happy together with them because of their youth: because of the great promise which is the simple fact that they are young”. Let the wonderful memories of the 31st World Youth Day remain in the pilgrims’ memories so that they continue to travel on their road taking with them new, good experiences and the memories of the beautiful landscapes of Polish nature. vuelven incoherentes. 79 Zdjęcia: Archiwum Nadleśnictwa Białowieża: 72 Agnieszka i Włodek Bilińscy: 11, 13, 25, 27, 29, 31, 38, 39, 43, 44, 45, 46, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 55, 56, 59, 62, 63, 65, 67, 71, 75, 77, 79 Jarosław Chyra: 73 East News/Laski Diffusion: 3 Karolina Kościerzyńska: 79 Shutterstock: 1, 9, 14, 15, 17, 18, 21, 22, 24, 26, 33, 35, 37, 41, 60, 61, 66, 80 Zenon Żyburtowicz/East News: 47 Mapy: Joanna Walczykowska Projekt, skład, fotoedycja: Karolina Krämer isbn: 978-83-8010-10 4-3 © Copyright by Ministerstwo Środowiska Warszawa 2016 Wszelkie prawa zastrzeżone | All rights reserved Publikacja przygotowana przez Grupę Wydawniczą BOOKMARK SA na zlecenie Ministerstwa Środowiska Lis pospolity (Vulpes vulpes)
