There is one commandment in which we are all guilty of violating – it is the first commandment. Do we place other gods before our One True God? Our first answer may be, “No, I don’t worship any other gods – I’m Catholic.” Take a moment to think about the ways that you spend your time, what you talk about with your friends, and the areas that you are most passionate about – do any of these things take the place of God? Our greatest sins all flow from a failure to live up to the first commandment, and when this happens we become like the moneychangers in the Gospel. We come to worship each week, but in our hearts we are worshipping something else. For the moneychangers it was business and enterprise; they did not see the temple as a sacred space but as an opportunity. What do you worship? Is it Christ, or is it something else? The final weeks of Lent reflect on what you worship and ask yourself if it is worthy of what is only due to God – ask yourself if you are one of the disciples following Christ or if you are a moneychanger in the temple. Seek the Sacrament of Reconciliation and place God back where He should be – your one object of worship. ext 172 ext 120 OUTREACH MINISTRY Members of St Anthony Outreach will be at the entrances today to accept any donation you might offer for those in need. REFLECTION As I read the Gospel for this week I wondered about the very last lines – what did it mean that Jesus “would not trust himself to them,” and that about human nature “he understood it well”? As I read and prayed more, I realized that Jesus wouldn’t trust his nature and identity to the people because they were seeking him only for signs. He knew that these same people would hand him over and crucify Him. He knew that people were fickle. I thought about my own faith and how often I come home from a retreat after witnessing all the great things Christ does, and then only a few days later I am back in my old habits of doubt and skepticism. I need to stop seeking signs and start seeking Christ. This is the somewhat arcane name given to the three brief ceremonies for those who are preparing for baptism at the Easter vigil. These ceremonies are celebrated on the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent. At the scrutiny, these people are presented to the Church community, which prays for them, so that they may defeat sin and Satan, successfully endure temptation, and be strengthened in Christ. Let us pray for these elect whom the Church has confidently chosen. May they successfully complete their long preparation and at the paschal feast find Christ in his sacraments.
