If football is the first national sport, betting on the results is the second and the latter has few rules except that the frenzy with which the forecasts are made and the fine-tuning of the betting strategies increase with the importance of each match. Consequently, in the 2002 World Cup, a sophisticated system was patented to predict the name of the winner. SOLUCIONES: 1 Tango (Argentina, 1978). 2 Teamgeist (Alemania, 2006). 3 Telstar (México, 1970). 4 Tricolore (Francia, 1998). 5 Telstar Durlast (Alemania, 1974). 6 Questra (Estados Unidos, 1994). 7 Azteca (México, 1986). 8 Tango España (1982). 9 Fevernova (Corea/Japón, 2002). 82 4 calculation, the winner of Germany 2006 will again be Brazil. The answer is in few numerical pirouettes. Brazil won its last two world cups in 1994 and 1970. If we add both years together, the result is 3964. Argentina won the World Cup in 1986 and 1978. If we add these two years together, the total is also 3964. We continue with Germany, who won in 1986 and 1978. The sum of these is a number that is now familiar: 3964. In this logic, the winner of the World Cup 2002 would coincide with that of 1962, which we get if we subtract 2002 from 3964. Who won in 1962? Brazil. And, Brazil won in 2002. To apply this method 9 indeed, to the next World Cup, all we have to do is subtract 2006 from 3064. The winner this year will be the country that won in 1958 and, as we know, that was Brazil. 8 GUESSING THE PAST Although we can read on the surface of these balls when they made their debut, here are a few clues. Ball 1 has something of the poorer areas about it, although not because of its manners, and it has the name of the national dance of the country that held the World Cup in 1978. It was also used to christen 8, which was used in the next World Cup. Number 2 means team spirit. 3 triumphed in the first televised World Cup and its name is a Saxon apocopation of television star, which also christened number 5. 7 takes its name from a mythical empire that is also a nickname for the 1986 host. 4 bears the colours of the European state that is very proud of its flag: red white and blue. Number 6 was used in a country where the one sport is baseball, eight years before 9, which surprised with its an elegant oriental reverence.
