Blood of Christ,
Inebriate Me!
Blood of Christ, inebriate
me! Inebriate me with Your
Love, that I may be
absorbed in Your interests
and Your Will. Absorbed
so as to be unmindful of my
ills and petty cares.
Unmindful of weariness
and pain, heartache, and
disappointment. Heedless
of the lash of cruel words,
and patient under wrongs.
Amen.

WHAT’S IN YOUR HEART?
The Pharisee in the gospel story thought that if he said his prayers, gave his
regular donation, and followed the fasting laws, he would be right with
God. Pray, pay, and obey, as some in the church once put it. The tax collector,
however, could only offer one thing: himself. He presented himself just as he
was and hoped in the mercy of God. It is a big temptation to believe that being
a member of the church is all about loyalty and not inner conversion. Have you
ever fallen into it?
WHERE WE LIVE, SERVE,
& WALK TOGETHER IN FAITH.
ST. JOSEPH’S
PAG E TW O
FROM THE PASTOR
My Dear Parish Family,
I‘d like to share some comments and insights provided by Bill McCormick, S.J. in his recent blog. Much of our conversation has recently been occupied by our nation‘s upcoming elections and the debates that precede it. I don‘t think any of
us were too surprised by the revelations in the debates. Among many things, Donald Trump made horrible statements
about women and dismissed them as ‗locker room‘ talk and Hillary Clinton tried to defend her email and Wikileaks
problem. I mention just these couple things about the candidates for us to recognize the reality before us: neither candidate is flawless...neither is walking the moral high ground. Whoever is your favored candidate, we have to be able to
accept his/her flaws, not just his strengths.
We don‘t vote for candidates because they are perfect, but because of how we assess their balance of weaknesses and
strengths. What am I asking? I am asking voters to shed the masks of willful self-deception and embrace the ethics of
citizenship. America needs a serious conversation now more than ever. And we‘ve forgotten how to speak one another.
We can start by being honest about our political choices. It‘s simple. Try to explain why you prefer one candidate over
another without immediately resorting to attacking the other candidate. Instead, explain the strengths of your candidate.
Acknowledge your candidate‘s weaknesses, and try to imagine how those weaknesses could be controlled. Look at the
issues for what they are. Try to imagine why someone else might not see those strengths as good, and why someone else
might see those weaknesses as damning.
We have become too accustomed to attacking the ―other‖ candidate as a substitute for rationally defending our own. We
have become ideological pundits and talking heads. But we all have thoughts, ideas, concerns and doubts that ought to be
shared with others. How can we reach out to others when we‘ve turned our attention primarily to defeating those with
whom we disagree?
Our ability to speak honestly and vulnerably to one another is not just about 2016, of course. Our country is unhappy
with where we are now. How are we going to keep from ending up in a permanent state of dissatisfaction? And how is
the country going to live with itself in the meanwhile?
Here are three steps as a suggestion:
First, take a step back and see the big picture. What principles ought to guide us? For that, I suggest the, the Declaration
of Independence, and the USCCB‘s ―Faithful Citizenship.‖ Can we articulate our principles to ourselves and others?
Second, cultivate practices to continue to speak peacefully and respectfully with other. The Ignatian Solidarity Network
has developed an examen for civil life; the UCS Province Jesuits have developed a set of resources for civil discourse;
and the Archdiocese of Cincinnati has a ―Civilize It‖ program that offers resources and guidances on respectful dialogue.
Third, unplug. Walk away from Facebook, Twitter, your computer, your smart phone. Talk to some real people. Resist
living in a bubble of like-minded people. For the greatest danger in politics is that the theater and drama becomes mistaken for reality. The only defense against that danger is to remain rooted in reality.
Remember before you vote, to pray over the issues as you see them and how the candidates have spoken. Also, think of
life…our inalienable right to life and make your choice be a life-giving one.
God bless you all,
Fr. Scott

There is always the danger
that we may just do the work
for the sake of the work. This
is where the respect and the
love and the devotion come in
- that we do it to God, to
Christ, and that's why we try to
do it as beautifully as possible.

PAGINA OCHO
MENSAJE DEL PARROCO
Estimada familia Parroquial,
estoy pidiendo a ustedes?
Fr. Scott
