Claritycon 2016 addresses the
importance of children’s mental health

This year, Claritycon came
to San Antonio with a purpose
to successfully raise awareness
about mental health in children
— it was more than informative,
it was inspiring.
The fourth annual Claritycon
2016 started on Thursday morning where nationally renowned
experts led approximately 20
workshops and presentation
throughout the conference. Topics included autism, bullying, the
effects of multiple deployments,
violence in schools and trauma
informed therapy.
One of the key moments was
when Clarity Child Guidance
Center, a San Antonio based
nonprofit organization targeting children’s mental health,
presented mental health advocate Stephanie Contreras with
the Kathy Cunningham Mental
Health Advocacy Award.
The award recognizes those
who dedicate themselves to make
a difference for families suffering
from mental illness. After learning
her son was suffering from mental illness at age 16, Contreras
began to speak to local and state
groups about suicide prevention,
partnerships and providing crisis
intervention trainings for peace
officers.
“Stephanie has devoted her
life to teaching and taking care
of children, especially if they
have a mental illness,” stated Fed
Hines, Clarity CGC president and
CEO. “The award honors those
who have worked to meet the
challenges of expanding access
to care and de-stigmatization of
mental illness, and Stephanie has
accomplished much to improve
the care of children with mental
illness in South Texas.”
Not only did the convention
award those for their services,
there was also a focus on those
who have to live with mental illness and are ready to share their
story. Filmmaker and mental
health activist Randi Silverman
shared her personal experience
as a mother with a child who
suffered from anxiety and bipolar
disorder during his youth.
She used her experience to
become the executive producer
and co-screen writer of the 2015
film, “No Letting Go,” which has
received national recognition with
fantastic reviews and awards since
its debut. Silverman is also the cofounder and director of Parent-toParent Support Group, a network
for parents raising children with
issues of anxiety, depression and
mood disorders.
Silverman hopes her film and
her story will encourage many
parents to open their eyes and decide to treat their children early on
in life. She would also like teachers and educators to be trained to
face these issues firsthand.

what they can take away from
me. Today is to listen to the parents, engage in conversation with
the children, become aware of
early symptoms, recover and be

Independent School District, el

LINDA PACE FOUNDATION PRESENTS: RIVANE NEUENSCHWANDER-SECONDARY STORIES — This spring, the
Linda Pace Foundation presents the Texas debut of “Secondary Stories,” a room-sized installation by Brazilian artist Rivane
Neuenschwander, who has become widely regarded for her often
ephemeral work that explores narratives about language, nature,
social interactions and the passing of time. “Secondary Stories,” as
well as three video installation works, is open at SPACE, the public
gallery of the Linda Pace Foundation. The exhibit will be on view
through July 29, 2017 at Linda Pace Foundation, 111 Camp St.
CONEY ISLAND AT THE MCNAY — The exhibition explores
and celebrates Coney Island, the most iconic, uniquely American
Amusement Park in the United States, which has served as national
cultural symbol inspiring artists, musicians, novelists, poets and
filmmakers. From Coney Island’s beginning as a watering hole
for the wealthy, through its transformation into an entertainment
mecca for the masses, to the closing of Astroland Amusement Park
following decades of urban decline, this first-of-its-kind exhibition
uses visual art as a lens to explore 150 years of Coney Island. For

Demostración sin violencia contra Donald Trump

El viernes 17 de junio frente
al Oak Hills Country Club, un
contingente de activistas, organizaciones pro-derechos civiles y
personas individuales que acudie­
ron por propia iniciativa se agruparon en una protesta pacífica
contra Donald Trump, quien
acudió a ese lugar para reunir
fondos destinados a su campaña.
Desde unas dos horas antes
de la llegada del candidato del
partido republicano a la presidencia del país, la gente empezó
a llegar portando cartelones de
repudio a empresario frente al
club, ubicado en el 5403 Frede­
ricksburg Rd.
Donald Trump arribó al lugar
alrededor de las 11:30 de la
mañana; pero, con la intensión
de evitar la manifestación, se
corrió el rumor de que entró con
sus cercanos colaboradores por
la puerta trasera del Oak Hills
Country Club –donde a puerta
cerrada– tuvo una reunión con
dirigentes republicanos.
A diferencia de otras plazas, la
manifestación se llevó sin ningún
incidente y el tránsito de vehículos fue lento pero fluido sin causar inconvenientes considerables
en el corredor de Frederisckburg,
usualmente muy activo al medio
día.
Por parte de los simpatizantes
del partido demócrata, la principal figura política en el evento
estuvo en la persona de Manuel
Medina, presidente del Partido
Demócrata en el condado de
Bexar.
A pesar de las recomendaciones de Jaime Martínez, de la Fundación César Chávez, de que los
manifestantes no llevarán ninguna otra bandera, solo la bandera
de los Estados Unidos, algunas
personas mostraron banderas distintas, lo cual, a juicio de algunas
personas es contraproducente,
puesto que en estas manifestacio-
nes lo que se persigue es obtener
los derechos como ciudadanos
norteamericanos.
En cuanto al resguardo del
orden, no se registró ningún
incidente grave y agentes de San
Antonio Police Department no
tuvieron que intervenir más que
en el control de tráfico y la seguridad de los transeúntes.

SAAF to host first Texas community
screening of documentary ‘Desert Migration’

The San Antonio AIDS Foundation (SAAF) will host the first
Texas community screening of
“Desert Migration,” an awardwinning documentary about
the unique challenges faced by
long-term survivors of HIV/
AIDS.
The screening will take place
on Thursday, June 23 from
6:30-9:30 p.m. at the Santikos
Bijou Cinema Bistro at Wonderland of the Americas Mall,
4522 Fredericksburg Road.
Tickets are $30 and are available at www.SanAntonioAIDS.
org.
Proceeds benefit SAAF and
the local screening is timed to
coincide with the 35th anniversary of the first official AIDS
diagnoses in the United States.
“Desert Migration” focuses
on a group of gay men, all
long-term HIV survivors, who
sought refuge in Southern California’s Palm Springs. The film
explores the physical, medical
and emotional side effects of
living with HIV – as well as the
stigma that still exists in American society 35 years after AIDS
was officially recognized as an
epidemic in the United States
and around the world.
The $30 ticket price includes
a pre-film reception with light
refreshments and, directly following the screening, an informal question-and-answer panel
discussion with the “Desert
Migration” director Daniel
Cardone, SAAF CEO Cynthia
Nelson, Dr. Barbara Saatkamp
Taylor, a local HIV medical researcher and physician, as well
as long-term survivors living in
San Antonio.
The event is sponsored by
Santikos Entertainment, Texas
Public Radio and the Crockett
Hotel.
“The majority of people living with HIV in Bexar County
are 45 or older, so the op-
portunity for the San Antonio
AIDS Foundation to be the
first to present this film in our
community is truly significant,”
Nelson said. “We are honored
to contribute to the emerging
national conversation about
aging with HIV.”
She cited the most recent
statistics from the City of San
Antonio’s Metropolitan Health
District, which reports that in
2014, 52 percent of people living with HIV were age 45 and
older. Eighty-five percent of
people living with HIV in Bexar
County were men.
“June 5, 1981 marks the
35th anniversary of when the
Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention officially recognized the first AIDS cases in
the United States. Historically,
that date is regarded as the beginning of what became known
as the AIDS epidemic,” added
Nelson. “And while all these
years later, science has made
incredible strides in treating
the disease and prolonging the
lives of people with HIV, there
is still no cure. We timed this
film screening as close as possible to the actual anniversary
date to help remind the public
that HIV/AIDS remains a serious health issue in our country
and around the world.”
In the Washington, D.C.
publication Metro Weekly, Cardone, who was diagnosed with
HIV in 1995, told writer John
Riley that “he’s often shocked
by the sheer ignorance surrounding HIV in mainstream
society — even among members of the LGBT community,
who still speak of HIV as if it
were the height of the AIDS epidemic in the 80s and early 90s.”
Cardone believes that HIV/
AIDS carries a stigma unlike
other major diseases. “I think
there’s still this moral outrage
and stigma associated with it
that doesn’t go to any other
disease,” Cardone said in the
interview. “People think it’s a
scandalous, dark thing that you
did that caused you to become
positive, so, therefore, you are
a bad person.”
With this documentary, Cardone hopes to shed light on
the topic and encourage open
discussion.
“I think the takeaway from the
movie, or what I hope people
will get from it, is that life goes
on. Life perseveres. We find
a way,” he said. “All of these
people are still getting on, even
if they’re depressed one day, or
their back is covered in sores, or
they’re having side effects from
the medication. They’re still
getting up every day. They’re
still getting on with their lives.”

Summer is officially in and
what better way to welcome
the season than with a special dance celebration.
For the 15th year, in celebration of the summer solstice, choreographer and
dancer Catherine Cisneros
presented her solo performance within the lighted
squares of Christopher Janney’s “Passing Light” solar
sculpture. Once a year on
the first day of summer at 2
p.m., the lighted grids align
with the painted grids on the
floor for 90 seconds as the
sun passes directly overhead.
“This is a piece dealing
with light and performance.
It is reflective of our time and
how lucky we are to be alive
and a time to recognize how
beautiful our earth and sun
is, and how it is changing
dramatically,” stated Cisneros. “We are marking and
recognizing the longest day
of the year.”

Story Project, the film focuses
on 13 gay men living long-term
with HIV who sought out an
oasis in Southern California’s
Palm Springs where their homosexuality and health condition are not just tolerated, but
understood. They represent a
large number of people who
migrated to the desert community burdened with memories
of watching their friends die,
all believing that a similar fate
would befall them.
Over the course of a single
on-screen ‘day,’ the film observes and records a group of
men as they work, eat, sleep,
love, recuperate and grieve. By
sharing their stories, “Desert
Migration” reflects on subjects
that relate to all of us, whether
we are HIV positive or negative, young or old: How do
we approach our own aging,
and the notion of mortality?

bajo su cargo (Stars de San Antonio), continúa desarrollando
su plan de juego.
Su rotación cuenta con los
servicios de las jugadoras Alex
Montgomery, guardia y alera
suplente quien está jugando su
sexta temporada en la WNBA;
seguida por la central estelar
Jayne Appel-Marinelli, que se
encuentra en su séptima temporada WNBA. También la
alera abridora Monique Currie, quien es veterana entrada
en su onceava temporada en el
mismo circuito.
El resto de la alineación entre
estelares y suplentes la integran
cuatro jugadoras novatas que
están marcando su debut. También cinco jugadoras prospecto,
