some of LUCHA‟s female leaders what
future they see for our neighborhoods and
reflect on LUCHA‟s contribution to that
future.

neighborhoods… “Even the transformation
of the park itself reflects the changing
neighborhood. It was once dangerous and
overgrown. Now it‟s a meeting place where
different groups from the neighborhood can
converge.”

Neighborhood History

Historia del Barrio
On May 20th 2011, 15 local high school students learned about
a unique portion of Humboldt Park‟s history. Students from
UIC College Prep and Pritzker Academy gathered at the Baretto Boys and Girls Club to hear muralists John Pitman Weber and Hector Duarte describe the images and the history
behind two of their significant murals.
The murals are painted on the exterior on LUCHA‟s
affordable housing properties known as Borinquen Apartments. The mural on the right, Rompiendo las Cadenas was
painted in 1971 by John Pitman Weber. It is one of the oldest
surviving outdoors murals in the country! It multi-racial hands
breaking chains. Written on the chains in English and Spanish
are challenges that communities face including “violence”,
“injustice” and “poverty”. Images of people in the windows of
burning buildings represent the arson that plagued the community in the „60s and „70s. Weber explained that he wanted
the murals to show the struggle of immigrants and people of
color to succeed and flourish in our society.

única de la historia de Humboldt Park. Los estudiantes se
reunieron en el Baretto Boys and Girls Club a escuchar a

Estas obras están localizadas en el exterior de dos edificios de LUCHA, conocidos como Apartamentos Borinquen. La de arriba, Rompiendo las Cadenas fue pintada
en 1971 por John Pitman Weber. Es uno de los murales al
aire libre más viejos en el país. Muestra manos multiraciales rompiendo cadenas. Escrito en las cadenas hay
desafíos que enfrentan comunidades, entre ellos
“violencia”, “injusticia” y “pobreza”. Imágenes edificios en
llamas representan los incendios criminales que afectaron
a la comunidad en los „60s y „70s. Weber explicó que él
quería mostrar la lucha de inmigrantes y los oprimidos por
florecer en este país.
El segundo mural, Honor Boricua, fue pintado en 1992 por
Héctor Duarte quien habló con residentes para inspirarse.
El mural muestra la imagen de la arquitectura del Viejo
San Juan con la bandera puertorriqueña flotando hacia
Chicago, dándole una vuelta o y volviendo a Viejo San
Juan . Duarte les explicó a los estudiantes que el diseño
muestra el intercambio permanente de cultura, lenguaje,
recursos y gente éntrelos estos dos naciones.

Neighborhood History
Honor Boricua, was painted in 1992 by Hector Duarte who
interviewed long-time residents for inspiration. It depicts
the architecture of Old San Juan with the Puerto Rican flag
flowing towards the Chicago skyline, circling Chicago and
returning to Old San Juan. At the gathering, Duarte explained that the design highlights the ongoing exchange of
culture, language, history, resources and people between
these two nations.
Andres Sanchez, a participant from Pritzker College Prep
wrote: “These murals aren’t just pictures, they symbolize
what the neighborhood has accomplished. This group of
people went from a bunch of neighbors, or even strangers,
to an organization that has helped build buildings, keep
houses and give hope to others. Every time people pass
by the murals they are able to see how much of a difference people of all types of colors can make.”
The buildings are aging and the bricks on which the murals
are painted need repair. LUCHA is organizing a committee
to plan more outreach events like this one. Join LUCHA to
restore these murals, expressions of the vitality and culture

diferencia que gente de todos colores pueden hacer.”
Los murales van envejeciendo y los ladrillos de los edificios
necesitan reparaciones. LUCHA está organizando un comité
para planificar eventos promoviendo las restauración. ¡Únete
a estos esfuerzos de preservar los murales, expresiones de
la vitalidad y la cultura de nuestro barrio!

What major changes have you seen in our neighborhood since LUCHA began work? How has LUCHA responded to those changes?
Change has been a constant since LUCHA began
its work in 1982. LUCHA was founded by residents to help
stop displacement and gentrification in the neighborhood.
Those forces are still the reality experienced by many communities of color in Chicago – one of the most segregated
cities in the U.S. These challenges were catalysts our
strong presence in the community. Residents trust us to continue to deliver quality
programs and to advocate on their behalf
to maintain community stability. From the
beginning, our job has been to preserve
and develop affordable housing, provide
housing counseling, educate and organize
residents –always adapting programs to
socioeconomic changes. We have accomplished this significant task by working in
partnership with residents, community
leaders and other key players. Our best
presentation card is the thousands of families who have trusted us with their housing
and financial concerns for almost three
decades.
What do you think will determine how the neighborhood
will change in the coming years?
Neighborhood change is inevitable when you consider the effects of broader structural issues like the housing
crisis, instability in the banking industry, significant demographic and political changes. Our ability to remain strong
in the face of those changes is essential. For instance, in
the current financial and housing crisis, LUCHA shifted its
focus from pre- and post- purchase homeownership counseling to foreclosure prevention and intervention. We also
strengthened our financial literacy programs and added new
services to help families remain in their homes. LUCHA has
also been successful responding to the needs of single
mothers with our Madres Unidas Development, and to those
who were homeless with the Humboldt Park Residence, our
Single Room Occupancy development.
The future of immigrants and communities of color
is at stake. To be proactive, LUCHA is strengthening current
partnerships and building new alliances, focusing on what
works and eliminating what doesn‟t. As a result of this vision, families and other residents participating in our programs are equipped to prosper in these turbulent times.

¿Qué cambios importantes se han visto en nuestro barrio desde LUCHA comenzó a trabajar? ¿Cómo
ha respondido LUCHA a las cambios?
Cambio ha sido una constante desde que abrimos las
puertas en 1982. LUCHA fue fundada por los residentes para
ayudar a detener el desplazamiento por deterioro físicas o por
causas económicas. Esa fuerza sigue siendo la realidad que
viven muchas comunidades de color en Chicago - una de las
ciudades más segregadas en los EE.UU. Este tipo de desafío
ha sido un catalizador para nuestra fuerte presencia en la comunidad. Los residentes confían que seguiremos
ofreciendo programas de calidad que aboguen para mantener una comunidad estable. Desde el principio, nuestro trabajo ha sido
preservar y desarrollar viviendas económicas,
proporcionar consejería, educar y organizar residentes, adaptando siempre nuestros programas a
los cambios socioeconómicos. LUCHA ha podido

políticos y demográficos. La capacidad de seguir
siendo efectivos ante estos cambios es clave. Por ejemplo, en
la crisis de vivienda y financiera actual, hemos ajustado nuestro
enfoque. Nos hemos movido de consejería para compradores
de casa, hacia la prevención e intervención de ejecuciones hipotecarias. Además, LUCHA ha fortalecido sus programas de
educación financiera y añadido nuevos programas para ayudar
a las familias a permanecer en sus hogares. También hemos
tenido éxito respondiendo a las necesidades de madres solteras
con nuestro proyecto Madres Unidas, y a las de personas sin
casa con el Humboldt Park Residence.
El futuro de las comunidades inmigrantes y de color
está en riesgo.
Para ser más acertados LUCHA está fortaleciendo relaciones actuales y construyendo nuevas alianzas, enfocándose en lo que funciona y eliminando lo que no. Como
resultado de esta visión, las familias y residentes que participan
en nuestros programas están equipados para prosperar en estos tiempos difíciles.
