The David Howarth and Matt Dixon-trained bay was too tough when posting a three-and-a-quarter length margin over Cassini (Reset), who also returns on Saturday, and So Pristine (Zabeel) in last year’s edition of the Cup. Tullaroan (NZ) Tullaroan (NZ) is peaking at the right time again this year, after finishing an impressive second to Sacha (NZ) (Keeper) in the McDonald’s Manawatu Cup Prelude last weekend. The early favourite for the 2300 metre open handicap is the regally bred Cambridge visitor Jeu de Cartes (NZ) (Stravinsky). A half-sister to the 2009 Champion Stayer and Australian Derby winner Nom Du Jeu (NZ) (Montjeu) Jeu de Cartes (NZ) picked up her fifth win in only ten starts at Ellerslie last weekend. She is yet to put two wins in a row but looks to be an exciting prospect for Murray Baker, who also trained Nom Du Jeu (NZ), at only four years of age. She's a pretty good one. She's only been beaten once over ground and that was last season when Allan Sharrock's filly [Shez Sinsational] beat her,'' Baker said. "Past 1600m, she's had four starts for three wins and a second. I need one like her as a replacement for Lion Tamer and Harris Tweed. They're like All Blacks - they don't come around very often.'' With her regular rider Jason Collett recovering from a bad fall at Tauranga, leading New Zealand jockey Matthew Cameron, who has ridden the potential Caulfield Cup runner in five of her trials, has picked up the ride. Antonio clear favourite for Challenge Stakes Star three-year-old Antonio Lombardo (NZ) (Pins) is the hot favourite for the Group Three Harcourts Challenge Stakes (1400m) at Awapuni on Saturday. The Peter McKay-trained colt is stepping back to 1400 metres after finishing third in the Group One Levin Classic last start over 1600 metres, ending his three race winning streak. The top performing two-year-old was far from disgraced in the Levin Classic and is a justified favourite for this weekend’s race. “He got galloped on and the worst thing was that it was my other horse Estrato that did it,” said McKay. “It happened when he was over racing and Estrato was right behind him. You could see Estrato lose a couple of lengths and just after that Antonio took off around them. Unfortunately the mishap affected both of my horses. “We wrapped up the leg straight away and there was only a little bit of swelling afterwards. The cut was high up inside his hind leg and he had a week in the paddock, but that was always the plan so really he hasn’t missed much work”. “He feels back to his sprightly self. Even though I was happy enough with him before the Levin Classic he just wasn’t himself. Generally he’s a handful when he is close to racing and that’s what he’s like again now. I’m happy with him and very happy with his work. Antonio Lombardo (NZ) With Sam Spratt currently suspended Antonio Lombardo (NZ) will be partnered by Danielle Johnson for the first time. “Danielle approached us a while ago and said if Sam can’t ride him at any stage she would love to,” said McKay. “She’s riding very well. She won a stakes race on Undisclosed for us and the few rides she has had since she has ridden to instructions. I’m happy to have her on. Safely through Saturday’s race Antonio Lombardo (NZ) holds nominations for both the Group One Blandford Lodge Railway Stakes (1200m) on New Year’s Day and the Group One Telegraph Handicap (1200m) at Trentham on January 21, with the later the favoured option at this stage. AUSTRALIA Dancing to Two Last start winner Zara Dancer (NZ) (Savabeel) will be chasing his second feature victory in succession in the Group Two Villiers Stakes at Warwick Farm on Saturday. Having just his third start for new trainers Greg and Jim Lee, the gelding showed determination last start, to lead throughout and score strong win in the Listed Frank Underwood Cup at Canterbury. Zara Dancer (NZ) The son of Savabeel (Zabeel) looks primed for a good showing, after a serious track gallop yesterday. "We couldn't believe it," Greg Lee said. "Zara Dancer was working with Barlagarney and we wanted him to have a strong gallop. "But they came home their last 400m in a tick over 22 seconds - and Zara Dancer was going half-pace. "It was as good a gallop as you would ever hope to see. "I think he'll win again because it's going to take a very good horse to beat him. "I know he won't let us down." The logical subsequent step for Zara Dancer (NZ) after his win at Canterbury appeared to be the Group Three Summer Cup on Boxing Day but Jim Lee had other ideas. "I feel his best distances are 1600m to 2000m," Greg Lee said. "His runs over 1600m in the Chelmsford Stakes (seventh) and George Main Stakes (fifth) were excellent. "We had him for a couple of starts after that before putting the blinkers on the horse, and that made all the difference at Canterbury. "They really switched him on. "In saying that, with blinkers on it would have been suicide to step him up to races like the Christmas Cup and Summer Cup." Fellow co-trainer Jim Lee feels the gelding is "spot on" for tomorrow's big race. "He's flying - his trackwork has been brilliant all week," he said. Zara Dancer (NZ) will be accompanied again by apprentice Adam Hyeronimus who scored his biggest win to date aboard the gelding last start in taking out the Frank Underwood Cup. "There was no hesitation - we wanted to keep Adam on the horse," Lee said, "The kid is at the top of his game. "He knows the horse well and he is a good thinker. "He proved that, the way he rode the horse last start. "Who could have ridden Zara Dancer better than Adam did at Canterbury? "It was one of those special rides." Although capable of leading, it looks unlikely that Zara Dancer (NZ) will be asked to repeat his frontrunning heroics. "Zara Dancer will hop out from that alley (12) and take a forward position but he doesn't have to lead," Lee said. "If another jockey is desperate to lead, Adam can easily take a sit just in behind - it won't make any difference to this horse." The Group Two Villiers Stakes has attracted a capacity field of sixteen and will be run at Warwick Farm due to grandstand reconstruction at Randwick. Kincaple ready for change of luck Consistent gelding Kincaple (NZ) (Pentire) will be looking for a change of luck in the lead-up to the Group Two Perth Cup when he runs in the Group Two LD Total CB Cox Stakes (2100m) at Ascot on Saturday. The son of Pentire (Be My Guest) has featured heavily in the stewards’ report at his part two starts. Kincaple (NZ) was inconvenienced by the incident which saw He’s Remarkable (NZ) (Pentire) relegated to second after being first past the post in the Group One Railway Stakes. Then last start, Kincaple (NZ) suffered interference at the start when he was bumped by another runner upon jumping from the barriers, causing him to miss the start and then race wide throughout. The focus of a national betting plunge in the Group One Railway Stakes, Kincaple (NZ) is due for a change of luck and is set to be partnered by four time Blue Diamond winning rider Dwayne Dunn, who will also accompany the gelding in the Group Two Perth Cup on New Years’ Day. "Trying to find a jockey from Melbourne to ride in both races was tough," trained Mark Reed said, “I’m thrilled to have a jockey of Dunn’s class on Kincaple in both features.” The other Perth Cup lead-up on Saturday’s Ascot program is the Listed Perth Ice Works WA St Leger over 2100 metres. The Alan Matthews-trained three-year-old Keepers Court (NZ) (Keeper) is the current reigning favourite after a barnstorming second behind Lord Hatras (Lord Dane) in the Listed Aquanita Stakes (1800m) at Ascot a fortnight ago. Kincaple’s sire Pentire The Keeper (Danehill) colt will face open class for the very first time, but is bred to stay, being a threequarter brother to Queensland Derby winner Court Ruler (NZ) (Viking Ruler). Westsouthwest for Tasmanian Derby -AAP TURF Robert Smerdon will prepare Westsouthwest (NZ) (Darci Brahma) for a crack at the Tasmanian Derby in February following his solid effort to win at his second start for the Aquanita Racing trainer at Caulfield. The Darci Brahma (NZ) (Danehill) three-year-old had been with the Mick Price stable for his first three starts and won a Mornington 1500m maiden at his second outing when resuming on October 30. The gelding was sold on to the Smerdon stable after he ran 11th to So Swift in the Group Two Sandown Guineas (1600m) on November 12. His first run for the new stable was a seventh of eight to Blast Out Of Here (Pivotal) over 1600m at Ballarat on November 30 and he appreciated the step up in distance to win Wednesday's Design To Print Hcp (2000m). Westsouthwest’s sire Darci Brahma (NZ) Ridden by Danny Nikolic, Westsouthwest (NZ) ($A2.40 fav) ran down race leader Haroldhaut (Formalhaut) ($A26) early in the straight and went on to score by 2-1/4 lengths with De Triomphe (Ne Coupez Pas) ($A4.40) a half-head away third. "When I got him into the one-one trail he settled beautifully. He's a good horse," Nikolic said. Smerdon said Nikolic, who rode the horse at his previous start, went out with a view to get going on him early. "He doesn't normally zip, he builds his momentum and he was strong to the line so hopefully he can take that a bit further," the trainer said. "He's pretty fit now and the race (Derby) is a little bit away but we'll just bide our time with him." Westsouthwest (NZ) was wearing a tongue tie for the first time but Smerdon attributed his improvement to the step up to 2000m. Stawell trainer Terry O'Sullivan was very happy with the effort of runner-up Haroldhaut who is a halfbrother to his 2005 Group One South Australian Derby (2500m) winner Tails Of Triomphe (Archway). "He's a tough little horse but this is his first preparation so we might give him one more run and then freshen him up and get him ready for the South Australian Derby in May," O'Sullivan said. The Colin and Cindy Alderson-trained Bartholemew was a late scratching from the event with the club veterinarian ruling him out due to lameness in the near-hind leg. Last season’s Champion Griffin Bear Hero (General Nediym) will have to face his toughest test to date in Hong Kong when he meets two of the most impressive debutants this season in the shape of Classic Jewellery (NZ) (O’Reilly) and Fionn’s Treasure (NZ) (Elusive City). Fionns’ Treasure (NZ) The John Size trained Classic Jewellery (NZ) delivered his rivals a galloping lesson on debut, running out a four length winner at Sha Tin three weeks ago. Size has patiently brought along the son of O’Reilly (NZ) (Last Tycoon), who looks likely to improve with age. “He’s a beautiful mover with a lovely action. He’s fit and well-schooled and we’ll see how he goes,” Size said. Classic Jewellery (NZ) will again be partnered by champion jockey Douglas Whyte. The other last start winner in the field is the Danny Shum-trained Fionn’s Treasure (NZ) (Elusive City), who displayed good acceleration on debut after leading through out to score a two-and-a-quarter length victory. The son of Elusive City (Elusive Quality) will be partnered by Melbourne Cup winning rider, Gerald Mosse. To view the field for Saturay at Shat Tin, please click here. SINGAPORE Baertschiger finishing year strongly Singapore Turf Club Midway through November trainer Don Baertschiger was having some worrying moments. With winners totalling just in the low 40’s and having set himself a target of 50 for the season, Baertschiger was thinking where his next winner was going to come from. Add to that a string of second placings and the Baertschiger stable was not in a comfortable place. It is amazing how a winner can change your luck. My Friend Jo (NZ) The Baertschiger stable ended the rut of finishing second and recently ticked over the 50 winner mark for the year when My Friend Jo (NZ) (Johar) was successful on December 9. Baertschiger will be looking to add to his tally on Sunday when he saddles last start winners Al’s Knight (Fastnet Rock) and Dragon World (NZ) (O’Reilly) at the final meeting of the season. The unbeaten Al’s Knight will contest the S$75,000 Kranji Stakes C over 1100m while Dragon World (NZ) faces a rise in grade when he lines-up in the S$95,000 Open Benchmark 97 Stakes over 1200m. Both races are to be run on the Polytrack. Dragon World (NZ) has had his injury problems and broke through for a long overdue win when successful on November 20. While the seven-year-old returned to winning form, Baertschiger is being cautious with the gelding. “It’s great to have him back in winning form again,” said Baertschiger. “He’s trained on really well but he’s meeting a pretty strong race. “He’s run OK on the Polytrack before but I’m just worried that he might get a bit lost on this track.” Baertschiger will also be represented by former Hong Kong galloper Legend (NZ) (Deputy Governor) in the same race as Dragon World (NZ) and said he would be surprised if the gelding won. “He hasn’t found his form since coming from Hong Kong,” said Baertschiger. “He wants it further than this as well and I would like to see him run a bit better than what he has been doing at present.” NZ-Bred Runners in SINGAPORE on Friday To view the complete fields please click here. The filly they came up with was certainly at bargain-basement price: NZ$5000 (they would have gone to $10,000) and the deal was done. Dreamcoat (NZ) Nevertheless, the brothers – and friend Steve Hoeft, who came in with them a bit later – had the 2012 Karaka Million in their sights. A yearling from the Festival Sale, if the initial registration fee is paid, is as eligible for the Karaka Million as the youngsters from Toffs' Alley, the Premier and Select Sessions. It's the pre-KM form on the racetrack that decides the makeup of the final field. Which is why, for the Marshall brothers and Steve Hoeft, their vague hope back in February for a chance to tackle the Karaka Million has now crystallised into a full-blown dream with a solid basis of reality. After winning stylishly at Ellerslie last Sunday, their NZ$5000 filly is now seventh on the list of entry for the 2012 Karaka Million. “We're over the moon just to be in with a real chance of starting,” said Kevin Marshall yesterday. “And if we're still there when final acceptances close – well, we'll be in with a runner's chance of winning, won't we!” Maybe a bit better than just a runner's chance. Dreamcoat (NZ) (Coats Choice) is speedy, she's smart and responsive – and she's already a winner. The Marshall brothers, growing up in Hamilton, used to go to the Te Rapa races with their “five-bob punter” mum as children, and continued their racing interest as keen punters when they grew up. Their first ventures into ownership were some leased horses with Matamata trainer Mark Brosnan. “It was Peter, originally,” says Kevin Marshall. “I came in on a horse named Alyeska, who won four or five modest races. “We then started racing a mare named Eloquent Dancer with Mark. She showed promise but then hurt herself. We dropped out, but Mark spent the money for an operation and won two or three with her. Then we saw a filly out of Eloquent Dancer in the catalogue for last summer's yearling sales.” The filly was bred at Berkley Stud, near Christchurch. Aware that their punting background didn't make them experts on conformation and type, the Marshall brothers asked New Zealand Bloodstock sales rep Danny Rolston to have a look at the filly. Rolston reported that she was a racy-looking filly, correct and that Coats Choice, her sire, was doing a good job at a modest fee. At that time the oldest progeny of Coats Choice (Aus) (Redoute's Choice-Coat, by Brocco) were three-yearolds and included some promising young gallopers including the very smart Milo (NZ). Thus it was that Rolston, bidding on the Marshall brothers' behalf, made the winning bid of NZ$5000 on the neat brown filly with four white socks who was to be named Dreamcoat (NZ). “After the sale she was looked after by Heidi Hargreaves, just out of Karaka. I took some pictures of her out there and showed them to Hoefty. He bought in with us. When we approached Steve McKee and he agreed to take her, we told him we wanted to enter her for the Karaka Million. He said 'You're mad if you don't.'” The months passed, not without the usual glitches and vet bills you get with a young horse, and eventually the Coats Choice filly was ready for a trial. She won that trial, at Ruakaka, and has steadily improved with each “real” raceday start: seventh at Ellerslie, when a bit lost out there; second, just a long head behind the highly regarded Oasis Rose (Oasis Dream) at Te Rapa on November 20, and then first at Ellerslie last weekend. In no other sphere does the fairy tale, the rags-to-riches dream, actually come true as often as it does in the racing world. Dreamcoat, the NZ$5000 filly who may be lining up against the NZ$400,000 and NZ$500,000 aristocrats at Ellerslie on Karaka Million day, has given her novice owners a taste of the fairy tale already. Sell In May a possibility for Karaka Million AAP TURF Trainer John Sadler will weigh up options for Saturday's Flemington debut winner Sell In May (NZ) (Starcraft) with next month's Karaka Million at Ellerslie a possibility. The Starcraft (NZ) (Soviet Stat) filly did not surprise the trainer when she got up for a narrow win over Glimmer (Husson) and Donna Cattiva (NZ) (Captain Rio) in the 1000m straight dash. "It's a possibility, she's going out for a fortnight's break or just short of that and there is a chance she will go to New Zealand," Sadler said. "It'll be either that or the Blue Diamond Preview. "But we would try and measure up how the form looked for the Karaka Million as to whether it was worthwhile." Last year’s Karaka Million winner Fort Lincoln The Listed Karaka Milllion (1200m) is run on January 29, the eve of the Karaka Premier Yearling Sale while the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) for fillies is at Caulfield on January 26. Sell In May (NZ), a $NZ100,000 yearling purchase, picked up $A42,700 for her connections with her home track victory which makes her the top qualifier for the Karaka Million ahead of Silver City (Nothing to Lose) ($NZ31,750). "We've liked her for some time and it was a good run," Sadler said of the Flemington win. "You'd have to have a query on the form though with the Snowden filly (Harpers) coming out at the barrier. "She (Harpers) trialled better than her at Cranbourne but she'd come on a lot." Queensland trainer Liam Birchley was successful in the 2010 Karaka Million with Sister Havana (NZ) (General Nediym) a year after coming second with Sarge In Charge (NZ) (Golan).
