Second Collection for
St. Patrick Seminary January 24
May the Christmas morning make us happy
to be Thy children, and the Christmas evening
Bring us to our beds with grateful thoughts,
Forgiving and forgiven, for Jesus’ sake.
Since 1898, St. Patrick’s Seminary has been dedicated to
the ministry of forming seminarians to be priests for the
Archdiocese of San Francisco. Most of the priests you
know who have baptized, married and buried your loved
ones and who celebrate the Sunday Masses you attend received their education here. We need your help to insure
that what began over a century ago continue into the future. We rely on your generosity and that of all the faithful
to support the seminarians of the Archdiocese who will
one day serve as your priests and shepherds.
Your donation will assist seminarians to develop humanly,
spiritually and intellectually. It will enable them to become
effective pastors who lead parishes, counsel parishioners
and proclaim the Gospel in many languages
Amen.

We wanted to share with all of you the news which we received from the Archdiocese earlier this week, regarding our dear former Pastor, Msgr. Keane. He was a good man until the end and will be missed by all.
From the Office of the Vicar for Clergy:
Some of you are hearing this news already: Our brother priest Monsignor Jim Keane died late last nig ht, January
3, 2016. He was 95 years of age.
Jim and his twin brother, John, were born in Corry, Pennsylvania in 1920. The family, which included older siblings Mary and Robert, moved to Long Beach when Jim and John were 10, and shortly thereafter, to a home within
the boundaries of Our Lady of Angels Parish in Burlingame. Following his studies at Saint Joseph College and
Saint Patrick’s Seminary, Father Keane was ordained in 1945 by Archbishop John J. Mitty. After celebrating his
First Solemn Mass at Saint Catherine Church in Burlingame, Father took up his initial assignment at Saint Anne
of the Sunset Church in San Francisco.
In 1949, Archbishop Mitty sent Fr. Keane to Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. to earn a Master’s
in Education. He wrote at the time, “Your Excellency, I shall do my best to justify your confidence in my ability.” On September 5, 1950, Father began his assignment on the faculty at Marin Catholic High School. Two
years later, in 1952, he was appointed Vice Principal of Marin Catholic, and wrote, “I realize the importance of this
office in the promotion of secondary education in Marin County, adding again, “I shall do my best to see that your
trust in my ability to do the job has not been misplaced!”
In 1959, he succeeded Fr. Joe O’Connell as Assistant Director of Saint Vincent’s School for Boys in San Rafael. He
was named Director of the school seven years later, and served in that capacity until 1975, during which time he
was named a Prelate of Honor with the title of Monsignor. Monsignor Keane wrote to the Archbishop after receiving the title in typically humble fashion, stating, “I wish to thank you for the honor given to the school!” In 1975, Monsignor was named Pastor of Our Lady of Loretto in Novato, and was quick to note that he would be
carrying on and implementing the works of his predecessor, Fr. Charles Farrell, who had served at the parish for
the previous 20+ years. A parishioner soon wrote to Archbishop Quinn, praising Monsignor Keane for his leadership, saying, “Monsignor Keane has a unique talent for bringing out the best. His calm, firm leadership provides
the environment that brings abundant fruit to the good vines you place in this field.” Another parishioner wrote
following a death in the family to say, “Monsignor Keene has been gracious, kindly, and supportive. I wish to say
that you have a great team at the parish. I know of no other time that I have needed this priest and this Church
more for support and purpose.”
Monsignor retired January 1, 1996, after serving 21 years at Our Lady of Loretto. He lived at Serra Clergy House in
San Mateo for over 18 years before moving to Nazareth House in San Rafael last January, 2014.

MANIFESTING THE SPIRIT
The Christmas season
closes this Sunday with the Baptism of the Lord. This feast is a
sister to last week’s feast of the
Epiphany. Each of them celebrates an “epiphany,” or a manifestation of the Spirit of God in
Jesus—first in his birth, and now at his baptism.
The divine Spirit is manifested in all of the scriptures for this feast. Psalm 104 highlights the Spirit of
God creating and renewing the earth, while the reading from Isaiah describes God restoring Israel. In
Luke’s account of the baptism of the Lord the Holy
Spirit descends upon Jesus. And the letter to Titus
reminds us that the Holy Spirit was “richly poured
out” on us also, through the “bath of rebirth” (Titus
3:5, 6).
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — Isaiah speaks of the Servant
whom the Lord upholds; he shall bring forth justice
to the nations
(Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7) or Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11.
Psalm — The Lord will bless his people with peace
(Psalm 29) or Psalm 104.
Second Reading — Jesus was anointed by God
with the Holy Spirit; he went out healing and doing
good (Acts 10:34-38) or Titus 2:11-14; 3:4-7.
Gospel — A voice comes from heaven proclaiming
Jesus as the beloved Son, with whom God is well
pleased (Luke 3:15-16, 21-22).

dinero;
creatura;
