For the State Government, fostering and fortifying initiatives
such as this one represents a source of pride and, at the same time,
an obligation, since for five years, the RMFF has contributed greatly
to make our Riviera Maya a destination for international cultural
tourism. We hope it continues for a long time. Welcome to the fifth

Fue en el año 2012 cuando un grupo de amantes y profesionales
del cine unimos esfuerzos y capacidades para crear un festival con
una misión principal: promover y difundir filmes de calidad entre el
público y visitantes del estado de Quintana Roo.
Así nació el Riviera Maya Film Festival, un espacio abierto a la
reflexión que este mes de junio celebra 5 años de compartir cine en
la región. Para festejar este acontecimiento, hemos preparado una
programación que incluye propuestas cinematográficas de probada
calidad artística, además de eventos especiales como conferencias y
charlas que destacadas figuras de la industria cinematográfica ofrecerán al público en el espacio Formación.
5 años de cine luminoso
Para muchos teóricos, hacer cine significa escribir con la luz en
movimiento. Siguiendo esta idea, podemos decir que durante cinco años el Estado de Quintana Roo ha sido “iluminado” con historias de todos los continentes, ya que en cada edición del Riviera
Maya Film Festival brillan filmes internacionales y nacionales de
probada calidad.
Estamos ante un festival de promoción y difusión de manifestaciones artísticas que contribuyen al desarrollo cultural y social
de los ciudadanos.
Por este motivo, el Estado de Quintana Roo se complace en
darles la más cordial bienvenida a la Quinta Edición del RMFF,
¡que la luz del cine vuelve a iluminarnos!

In 2012, a group of movie lovers and professionals joined their efforts
and skills to create a festival with one main objective: to promote and
spread quality films among the public and the tourists of the State of
Quintana Roo.
Thus was born the Riviera Maya Film Festival: an event open to
reflection which, this month, is celebrating five years of sharing cinema
in the region. To celebrate this occasion, we have prepared a program
that includes cinematographic expressions on film of guaranteed artistic
quality, and special events such as conferences and talks that distinguished movie industry figures will offer our public in RMFF Teachings.

For many theorists, to film means to write with moving light. Following this thought, let me say that for five years the State of Quintana Roo has been “illuminated” with stories from every continent,
for in every edition of the Riviera Maya Film Festival there shine
both international and national films of proven quality.
We have before us a film festival that promotes and disseminates
artistic expressions which contribute to the cultural and social development of our people.
For all these reasons, the state of Quintana Roo is pleased to

FEATURE OF THE RMFF
Desde su primera edición, el RMFF tuvo muy claro que quería ofrecer a sus espectadores cine de calidad y de vanguardia. En el 2012
proyectó un total de 72 películas provenientes de diferentes países.
La gran mayoría de ellas fueron estrenos en México con excelente
recibimiento en festivales de renombre. A través de secciones como
Plataforma Mexicana y Panorama Autoral, el RMFF iniciaba su
camino, buscando convertirse en un parámetro de las tendencias
fílmicas internacionales y nacionales.
Autocinema
DRIVE- IN THEATER
¡Cómo en los viejos tiempos! Una de las novedades de la primera
edición del RMFF fue la proyección de películas en el Autocinema
de Cancún. El público tuvo la oportunidad de revivir esta vieja, pero
atractiva tradición de los años sesenta.
Beginning with its first edition, the Riviera Maya Film Festival had
a clear objective as to what it should bring to the people: quality
avant-garde filmmaking. In 2012 a total of seventy-two films from
different countries were screened. Most of them premiered in Mexico
and were acclaimed by many of the major international film festivals.
With the Mexican Platform and Authors Outlook sections, the RMFF
was finding its way, looking toward becoming a trendsetter among
national and international film forums.
Like in the good old days! One of the novel aspects of the First Edition
was the screening of our selection of films at a drive-in theater in
Cancun. The audience had the chance to reminisce about this old but
beloved tradition from the sixties.

En su primera edición, el RMFF contó con la presencia de destacadas figuras internacionales como Susan Sarandon, Clive Owen,
Ethan Hawke, Pilar López de Ayala, Javier Drolas y Frédérique Bel.
Riviera lab
En el 2012 un equipo de entusiastas y apasionados del cine creó
RivieraLab, laboratorio de proyectos del RMFF. En la primera
edición participaron 18 proyectos y muchos de ellos se convirtieron
en reconocidos filmes.
In its first edition, the RMFF was honored by the presence of such distinguished international figures as, among others, Susan Sarandon,
Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke, Pilar López de Ayala, Javier Drolas and
Frédérique Bel.
In 2012, an enthusiastic group of film–lovers created RivieraLab the
RMFF project lab. Eighteen projects – many of which later became
renowned - participated in the first edition.

Para completar el ciclo fílmico, el RMFF integró en el 2014 una
nueva sección a su programación: RivieraLab Presenta, un espacio
en el que se proyectan filmes que, en ediciones pasadas, participaron en el laboratorio de proyectos del festival. Hasta la fecha, por
el ciclo han pasado obras como “Réimon” de Rodrigo Moreno y “La
princesa de Francia” de Matías Piñeiro.
ESTRENO DE “NYMPHOMANIAC”
THE PREMIER OF “NYMPHOMANIAC”
“Nymphomaniac”, vol. 1 & 2”, dirigida por el polémico Lars von
Trier, fue una de las películas que más expectativa despertó entre
el público del Riviera Maya Film Festival. Para la función de estreno
en México se registraron largas filas en Cinemex Centro Maya y
Plaza Pelícanos.
To complete the film cycle, in 2014 the RMFF incorporated a new section to its programming: RivieraLab Presents – a segment that shows
films which took part in the festival’s film project lab in the past. So
far this period such movies as Rodrigo Moreno’s “Réimon” and Matías
Piñeiro’s “The Princess of France” have been presented.
“Nymphomaniac I and II”, directed by the controversial Lars von Trier,
was one of the films that raised the most expectation among viewers in
the Festival. For the premier screening in Mexico, long lines were seen
at Cinemex Centro Maya and Plaza Pelícanos.

The integration of the different segments of the community of Quintana
Roo; experiences shared by spectators, actors and filmmakers and respect
for the natural environment of the Riviera Maya… all this gave meaning
to the slogan that sums up the vision of the Festival: Films are Us.
El impacto del RMFF se reflejó, en su segunda edición, en la importancia de sus invitados internacionales y nacionales, representados
en el 2013 por la actriz nominada al Óscar Patricia Arquette y los
actores Christian Slater y Stephen Dorff. Entre los actores mexicanos estuvo Mónica Dionne, Gustavo Sánchez Parra, Cecilia Suárez
y José María Torres.

The impact of the second edition of the RMFF was reflected on the presence of special national and international guests in 2013. Among them
were not only Oscar-nominated actress Patricia Arquette and actors
Christian Slater and Stephen Dorff, but also Mexican actors Mónica
Dionne, Gustavo Sánchez Parra, Cecilia Suárez and José María Torres.

YOUTH PROGRAM RMFF
El RMFF siempre se ha interesado en abrir espacios para los jóvenes
a través de diferentes programas como Jurado Joven, Anfitriones y
Riviera Insiders. En el primero se convoca a amantes del cine para que
conformen un grupo que elija la mejor película de la sección Plataforma Mexicana. El programa Anfitriones está destinado a estudiantes
que quieran colaborar con el festival en sus diferentes áreas operativas.
Y finalmente, Riviera Insiders son los reporteros internos del RMFF.

BRIDGE TO THE COMMUNITY
Acercar el cine al mayor número posible de espectadores, y crear un
vínculo entre artistas y público, han sido objetivos fundamentales
que el RMFF ha conseguido desde sus inicios, a través de su programa Puente con la Comunidad, en colaboración con Cine Club
Playa del Carmen: una pantalla itinerante trae historias para todos
en diversos espacios al aire libre.
Bringing quality films to the largest number possible of viewers and
creating links between the audience and the filmmakers, have been
goals achieved by the festival, thanks largely to its Bridge to the Community Program, in collaboration with Playa del Carmen Cine Club.

From its inception, the Riviera Maya Film Festival has been interested
in opening doors for young people, through its programs Youth Jury,
RMFF Hosts and Riviera Insiders. The first one calls young film afficionado to be members of a jury that selects the best film of the Mexican
Platform section. The program RMFF Hosts is aimed at young people
who want to be involved in the diverse production areas of the festival.
And Riviera Insiders are the internal reporters of the RMFF.

Crear un puente entre los artistas y los estudiantes interesados en el
quehacer cinematográfico, fue una de las principales metas por las que
nació Formación, un espacio en el que directores, actores y productores comparten experiencias con jóvenes de diferentes universidades.
En el 2015 el RMFF concentró la mayor parte de su programación en
Cinemex Centro Maya, Playa del Carmen. Aquí se proyectaron todas
las películas, se ofrecieron charlas con directores y, además, se celebraron las conferencias de los invitados especiales más importantes,
como fue el caso de los directores Joe Dante y Asia Argento.
Bringing together creators and students, who are interested in filmmaking, was the main objective that gave birth to our lecture series
RMFF/Teachings. – an area in which directors, actors and producers
to share their expertise with young people from different universities.

Después de las actividades en Playa del Carmen, el RMFF ofreció
un ciclo de proyecciones con los filmes más destacados del festival
en varias ciudades del Estado de Quintana Roo: Puerto Morelos,
Cancún, Isla Mujeres y Tulum.

Por la alfombra roja de la cuarta edición del RMFF desfilaron personalidades como los cineastas Joe Dante y Asia Argento, los actores Carlos Bardem y Aaron Paul. El talento nacional estuvo representado por Cecilia Suárez, Manolo Caro, y Alfonso Arau.
After the activities in Playa del Carmen came to an end, the RMFF offered a film screening cycle that featured the selection of the most outstanding films, in Puerto Morelos, Cancún, Isla Mujeres and Tulum.
Down the red carpet of the fourth edition paraded such renowned personalities from the filmmaking world, as directors Joe Dante and Asia

de junio será la inauguración en Playa del Carmen y a partir del

Maya. On June 24 the opening will be celebrated in Playa del Carmen.
Film screening sessions and gatherings with special guests will be held

Mexican Platform will show contemporary national films. In Mass Audiences we will find films that have been blockbusters in and out their

auteur films. Galas will be having distinctive screening sessions with
special guests, and Planetarium will be showing films that present a
critical stance on global and current issues.
Some of the titles to be screened this edition are: “Disorder” by

Song” by Terrence Davies.

muerte, suceso que puntualiza el sentido de la misma. No Home
Movie es una película casera, cotidiana pero capaz de transmitir,
gracias al impecable trabajo de edición, esa forma en la que vida
parece concluir, reflejado en la intimidad de la casa y las relaciones
familiares. Esta directora monta la cámara en el día a día, como un
paso constante, como es: un rodaje. Revelador, intimo y profundo,
así de intenso el simple y último filme de esta trascedente directora.
I recommend this beautiful film because it is the last film directed by
Chantal Akerman before her sudden, tragic death, a fact that somehow gives the film an eerie trait. No Home Movie is indeed a sort of
home movie: quotidian but capable of conveying greatly thanks to
the impeccable way of editing this life that seems to conclude, reflected in the house intimacy and the family relationships that Chantal
carefully frames. She mounts her camera to shoot the everyday as it
is, as a constant step, as a film. Revealing, intimate and profound,
a very intense yet simple last work from a trascendental filmmaker.

Una familia que intenta unir las piezas nuevamente, el retrato de un
padre en crisis con dos hijos preadolescentes, una esposa que intenta
seguir con un matrimonio que se quiebra por la falta de comunicación
e interés, juegos de saqueos medievales en computadora y siestas que
acompañan una aguda depresión; ejemplo de actividades rutinarias
que fortalecen la apatía y el ensimismamiento. Kazik Radwanski director y escritor a través de planos cerrados nos acerca al interior de
un hombre, que fija su mirada en el limbo impalpable de la mente
pero que también comparte destellos de alegría con los que le rodean.
Los sentidos que se vuelven difusos y nos confunden al relacionarnos con nuestro núcleo familiar por que simplemente no podemos
estar presentes emocionalmente, no por causa de un estímulo consciente, si no por que el interior demanda esa ausencia sin control.
La desconexión y aletargamiento provocados por la vida cotidiana y el vacío interno inherente al ser humano, ligadas a las
experiencias que se desprenden de la rutina y el continuar del
tiempo que no se detiene pero sí oxida.

A family trying to pick up its’ pieces, the portrait of a father with two
pre-teen children undergoing a crisis, a wife trying her best to mantain a marriage that’s slowly shattering due to lack of communication
and common interests, medieval online games and long naps that usher an acute depression; all these, examples of routinary activities that
reinforce apathy and self-absorption. Kazik Radwanski, director and
screenwriter, takes us deep into the insides of a man, who sets his gaze
at the impalpable limbo of the human mind but a man who also, from
time to time, shares little flashes of joy with those who surround him.
The senses that become diffuse and confound us, when we relate
to our family, simply due to the fact that we cannot be “present” emotionally, not out of a conscious stimulus, but rather out of an uncontrolled demand for absence emanating misteriously from our insides.

I became interested in war photographers who spoke about the
difficulty of returning to civilian life, having experienced death and
the horrors of the battlefield at close quarters. I met soldiers who’d
come back from Afghanistan and who talked to me about their
fears, their sudden bouts of violence - all those sources of pain
and distress that we group under the term “post-traumatic stress
disorder” and put soldiers out of action. The character of Vincent
evolved from these encounters.

I wrote the film for Matthias Schoenaerts. He was completely committed: during filming, he didn’t sleep and was in a genuinely bad shape.
For the character of Jessie, I wanted to give a touching portrayal of the
neglected “trophy wife”, who has lost herself in a superficial existence.
Diane Kruger brought a lot of authenticity to the character. I’ve always
been fascinated by her Hitchcockian side.

Sion Sono: Empecé como poeta, escribiendo poemas, y después
deje de hacerlo. Era aburrido escribir en un trozo de papel, así que
escribí mis poemas en diferentes superficies –en las paredes, en
los baños, etc- y luego las filmé con mi cámara de 8mm. Después,
voltée la cámara hacia mí, y me filmé leyendo esos poemas también. ¡Empecé a hacer películas sin siquiera darme cuenta!

You’ve said you’ve always loved films but felt
you were too shy and withdrawn to actually make movies. How did you overcome that?

I started out as a poet, writing poems, but then I stopped doing it.
It was boring to write on a piece of paper, so I wrote my poems on
different surfaces—on the street walls, lavatory walls, and such—and
shoot them with an 8mm camera. And soon I turned the camera on
me, shooting myself reading poems as well. So I started making films
without even knowing I did at all.

The first part of the film was written so that it could stand on its own.
I wanted to develop the characters further in collaboration with actors
on set. The second part is set three years later, because that gives some
distance for their character’s relationship to settle. But also it’s set three
years apart because we could cast our elder daughter to play the role her
younger sister played in the first part.

up in a era of what we call “the woman’s picture,” and my sister took me to see “Love is a Many
Splendored Thing,” “All that Heaven Allows,” and all that. And so I grew up on that, and you
can’t get away from the influence that had. And then trying to make it, but it’s got to sing, it has
got to be filmmaking, and it doesn’t really matter if it’s a man or woman who is a main character, the fact is that it’s got to be true to that. I think i probably do take extracts from little bits

A woman is held in a jail controlled by a crime organization while another

He studied at the California Institute of the Arts where he took his
Master’s degree in film and video. He started as a director with the

the world. Among his best known films are “The Time that Remains” (07),
“The Sky, the Earth and the Rain” (08) and “Summertime” (11), all of
them exhibited in various film festivals and decorated with such awards as
the FIPRESCI at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. His most recent
documentary is “The Winds Know I’m Coming Back Home” (16) which
premiered in Rotterdam 2016.

of El Universal newspaper. Her film articles have appeared in most Mexican print outlets as well as foreign publications, including the supplement “Atlas du cinéma” of Cahiers du Cinéma, the Spanish Cuadernos
Caimán and the British Sight & Sound. Alternately, she has hosted tv
programs on movie analysis, including Filmoteca 40, Confabulario, Encuadre and Plano abierto. She’s a member of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) and has been a past jury member in
national and international festivals.
Along with her regular writing she’s currently working on Mexican
film production dictionary and is a member of the Morelia Film Festival
Official Selection committee. She lives in Mexico City.

“Community Bridge RMFF and Cine Club Playa del Carmen provide
something quite valuable, as they –through the films shown- enable us
to perceive important aspects of our culture. (This film, for instance),
made me think about globalization and how not to be negatively affected by it.”
In partnership with the non-profit Cine Club Playa del Carmen, we
have created the program Bridge to the Community. Two goals are
thus accomplished in every edition: bringing national quality productions to more spectators, through a selection of films able to discover
possibilities of social growth.

Utilicé una picaña, que es muy común en Brasil, una tapioca y un puré de

Pescado con Pipián y Elote Asado
Nos basamos es Amores Perros de Alejandro González Iñárritu,
porque es una película que habla de cuatro historias, que se desarrollan
paralelamente en distintos puntos de la ciudad que se unen y se van
enredando entre ellas. Las cuatro historias de sentimientos encontrados, felicidad, tristeza, enojo, iría, alegría, pasión, soledad, frustración
en fin, pero es la felicidad la base. En Axiote creemos que sucede algo
similar cuando las personas se sientan alrededor de una mesa y comparten un plato, comparten la comida, comparten alimentos e intercambian opiniones y anécdotas. Sentarse alrededor de la mesa es converger historias en un
solo bocado.

We thought of this dish, based on the film Amores Perros by Alejandro
González Iñárritu, because it is about four stories with parallel development in four points of the city. They come together and become gradually
entangled. The four of them are about mixed feelings of anger, sadness,
joy, frustration, rage and solitude, but happiness is the basis.
We, in Axiote, believe that something such happens when people get
together at the table and share their meal, their nourishment as well as
thoughts or anecdotes.

En sus más recientes ediciones, el RMFF ha realizado alianzas
con destacados artistas que trabajan en la Riviera Maya. Se trata de un fructífero intercambio que beneficia a todos los involucrados: los creadores apoyan al festival diseñando diferentes
objetos y souvenirs y el RMFF les proporciona una plataforma
de difusión para su obra.
Una de las cosas que más me gustan de los festivales de cine es
que, entre película y película, siempre se puede encontrar tiempo
para comer y tomarle el pulso a la ciudad que alberga el evento
desde la perspectiva culinaria. Para un tragón profesional como
yo, San Sebastián, Berlín o Locarno significan pintxos, kebabs y helados entre muchas otras cosas. Desde esta perspectiva el Riviera
Maya Film Festival tiene mucho que ofrecer además de su nutrida
programación cinematográfica.
Aquí les propongo algunos imperdibles de Playa del Carmen
durante el festival que a mi me gusta revisitar cada que vuelvo.

Después de participar como público en la primera edición
del RMFF 2012, y como fotógrafo aficionado en la segunda
edición del 2013, Carlo Michieli fue invitado por el Festival
para elaborar los reconocimientos del RMFF 2014. Su propuesta fue la creación de unas bellas bateas realizadas en
madera de corazón de siricote.
After being among the spectators during the First Edition of the
RMFF in 2012, and working as amateur photographer for the
Second Edition in 2013, Carlo Michieli was invited by the Festival to create the RMFF awards in 2014. He created beautiful
trays made out of ziricote wood.

En 2013 El Jaguar Dorado participó en el RMFF haciendo las bolsas para
los regalos de los invitados con un diseño propio de un Kukulkán, que fue
impreso de forma artesanal en una loneta de algodón mexicano.
In 2013 El Jaguar Dorado created the gifts for the RMFF: bags for the Festival kits, featuring an original design of Kukulkán, with artisan design on
Mexican cotton canvas.
Mas tardecito y si quieren conocer los mejores fideos de los alrededores vayan a Babe´s noodles and bar donde además de un Pad Thai
espectacular, podrán probar unas albóndigas suecas de campeonato
-búsquenlas entre los especiales-. Combinación extraña pero ganadora.
Later on. If you want to taste the best noodles of the region, do visit
Babe´s noodles and bar. You will have a spectacular Pad Thai, but
also the best Swedish meatballs –find them among the specialties- this
odd combination is a winner.
One of the things that I most enjoy about film festivals is to find time
in between movies, to eat and take the pulse of the host city, from the
culinary perspective. For a professional guzzler like myself, San Sebastian, Berlin or Locarno mean pintxos, kebabs and ice cream, among
many others. The Riviera Maya Film Festival has a lot to offer in this
area, beyond its nourished film program.

Para su quinta edición, el RMFF invita a Chikizz Ramone,
diseñador y artista visual radicado en Playa del Carmen. Durante la semana del RMFF 2016, Chikizz Ramone realizará
un mural en Playa del Carmen inspirándose en una frase:
“Una gráfica no hace una revolución pero puede motivarla”.
Otra opción para la cena con la que es imposible equivocarse
es La fishería, donde el buen Aquiles Chávez demuestra cuánto le
gusta cocinar y cómo se puede uno divertir diseñando una carta.
No se pierdan el trio de ceviches, los chips de pulpo o los tacos de
chicharrón de pescado.

El año anterior Kukulcanvas fue invitado por el RMFF para participar en
la creación de la ilustración para la cuarta edición del Festival. El resultado fue Mayacam (fusión de una cámara 8mm con una reliquia Maya legendaria) La ilustración fue estampada en playeras y bolsas. Esta línea de
Kukulcanvas estuvo a disposición del público del Festival como souvenir
exclusivo, junto a otros productos de su propia propuesta gráfica y logos.
Last year, the Kukulcanvas studio was invited by the RMFF to create the artwork
for its Fourth Edition. The result was Mayacam - an icon that combines an 8 mm
camera with a legendary Mayan relic. The illustration was stamped on T-shirts
and bags. This line of Kukulcanvas products was available as an exclusive souvenir
of the Festival, along with other products of their own motion graphics and logos.

From 2012 to 2015, RivieraLab, the filmmaking project laboratory of the RMFF,
fulfilled its mission of promoting and increasing the distribution of national films,
but also encouraging and supporting national and international film creation.
RivieraLab conferred major awards on films that have later, achieved an outstanding trajectory in subsequent major film festivals. We present here four examples
of the results of this initiative.

Filmin Latino is a Video On Demand platform, which offers a catalogue
of over 1600 titles among which are films, serials and shorts, both new and
classic. It offers a wide variety of Latin-American films.
Alianza: durante la primera semana del festival esta plataforma generará
un canal con títulos que participaron en ediciones anteriores del RMFF
y a partir del 2 de julio agregará al canal varios títulos destacados de la
quinta edición del festival.
Alliance: during the first week of RMFF 2016, this platform will have a
special channel with movies shown during previous editions of the festival.
In addition, beginning July 2, the channel will also add several outstanding
films from our fifth edition.
Goethe Institut Mexiko organiza y apoya una amplia
gama de eventos culturales para el fomento del intercambio
intercultural. Ofrece cursos de “Alemán como idioma
extranjero” en seis niveles diferentes, de acuerdo al marco de
referencia europeo.
Goethe Institut Mexiko organizes and supports a wide
variety of cultural events to foster intercultural exchanges. It
also offers classes of “German as a foreign language” at six
different levels, according to the European frame of reference.
Alianza: Durante la quinta edición del RMFF esta institución
participará presentando dos películas en funciones especiales
con la presencia de su directoras: “24 semanas”, de Anne
Zohra Berrached, y “¿Quién es Oda Jaune?”, de Kamilla
Pfeffer. Además, en la segunda edición de Formación se
impartirá un taller sobre cine alemán.
Alliance: During our fifth edition this institution will
participate by showing two films in special screenings in the
presence of the directors: “24 Weeks”, by Anne Zohra Berrached
and “Who is Oda Jaune?”, by Kamilla Pfeffer. Also, in the second
edition of our RMFF Teachings program, Goethe Institut Mexiko
will hold a workshop on German cinema.
