There is a church at 38144 6th Street East in Palmdale calling itself the "Chapel of Saint Ann Traditional Catholic Church", run by a supposed "bishop". These churches typically prey on people's ignorance in allowing them to think they are an actual Roman Catholic church, and they offer simplified, "shortcut" sacramental preparation programs and charge exorbitant amounts of money. People often come to us with Marriage, First Communion, and Confirmation certificates from these fake Catholic churches and discover that these sacraments are not valid. There are also fake Catholic priests who come here from Los Angeles or from Mexico and perform sacraments at homes or in ranches in Acton and Littlerock. Please be aware of these false churches and priests who defraud the ignorant and who personify the false prophets Jesus warns us of. As our national presidential election approaches we should prepare with prayer and reflection as we cast our votes for candidates and for the various state initiatives. Our Archbishop Jose Gomez wrote a great column in last week's "Tidings" in which he challenged us to see ourselves first as Catholics, not as conservatives, liberals, or moderates. God also does not look upon us as members of political parties but rather asks us simply to be faithful to Jesus and His Gospel of Love. Many of the problems we have in society today are because our society has forgotten God. As a nation we lose sight of our common purpose and cannot reach consensus on issues because we lack shared values, which were in the past the shared values of Christian faith. Archbishop Gomez calls upon us to be guided by the principles of solidarity and subsidiary - solidarity reminds us we are all in this together, and subsidiary encourages us to seek solutions on the local and even personal level. We are not isolated islands but we depend on each other, and upon God. Guided by our Catholic values and faith, we pray that the Holy Spirit will be with us as we vote this Election Day, and we pray that God will still in His mercy bless our country. HOLYLAND PILGRIMAGE Father Joseph Brennan of St. Andrew's Abbey, who often celebrates Mass here at St. Mary's, will be leading a pilgrimage to Israel March 516, 2013. Cost is $2,999.00 For more info please contact John D'Isacco at (310) 546-1302. Are you and your kids prepared for the next earthquake? Think about a communications plan for your family. Choose someone who does not live with you (preferably an out-of-town relative or friend) whom you and other family members can contact to check on each other in the event that you are separated during a disaster. Carry that person’s contact information in your purse or wallet. Make sure children know their last name, phone number, address, and number for the out-of-town contact person. Make sure every member of your family knows an alternate route home. If family members can’t get home, designate a meeting place. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650. Welcome to St. Mary’s October 14, 2012 RELIGIOUS EDUCUCATION OFFICE 273-5554 Pope Benedict XVI is inviting Catholics to enter into a special journey where discovering the treasures of our faith and renewing our commitment to Christ as Catholics can be of special importance for all the Baptized for a year starting October 11, 2012 and ending November 24, 2013. This call has been highlighted from his predecessors in a very special way from Pope Paul VI and Blessed John Paul II. The latter called the Church community to recommit its energy to evangelize and catechize in a manner reflecting Jesus’ approach and he called to this action “The New Evangelization” Pope Benedict XVI invite us to enter on this journey: “The “door of faith” (Acts 14:27) is always open for us, ushering us into the life of communion with God and offering entry into his Church. It is possible to cross that threshold when the word of God is proclaimed and the heart allows itself to be shaped by transforming grace. To enter through that door is to set out on a journey that lasts a lifetime. It begins with baptism (cf. Rom 6:4), through which we can address God as Father, and it ends with the passage through death to eternal life, fruit of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, whose will it was, by the gift of the Holy Spirit, to draw those who believe in him into his own glory (cf. Jn 17:22). To profess faith in the Trinity – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – is to believe in one God who is Love (cf. 1 Jn 4:8): the Father, who in the fullness of time sent his Son for our salvation; Jesus Christ, who in the mystery of his death and resurrection redeemed the world; the Holy Spirit, who leads the Church across the centuries as we await the Lord’s glorious return.” Benedict XVI Apostolic Letter Porta Fidei. These methods use daily observations of signs and symptoms that reflect the hormonal changes within a woman’s menstrual cycle. Couples can learn how to interpret these in order to recognize the natural fertile and infertile phases of the cycle in order to achieve or avoid a pregnancy. This knowledge can be applied to regular or irregular cycles. Natural Family Planning can be used during a woman's entire fertile years, even during periods of breastfeeding and premenopause. There are monthly instructions at St. Mary’s parish at 10:00AM on on the 4th Saturday of the month in Our Lady of Guadalupe room. The instruction is FREE please preregistration is required call Instructor: Natalie Kigerl RN, PHN 661/674-8827.
